THE MANAGER WRITES ..... I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everybody to this afternoon's match and also to introduce myself to the Tayport support in this, the first programme of the season.

When Dave Baikie was appointed boss at Arbroath, I considered it a great honour to take over the manager's post at The Canniepairt.

Tayport under Dave were extremely successful and I am determined to continue where he left off. With the players we have at this club, the excellent committee and the tremendous supporters, I am sure we can continue to be successful.

We have had a good start considering the amount of injuries with which we ha~e had to contend. There has been at least five players unavailable for every game so far but, apart from the disapointment of losing the opening game at Carnoustie, we have remained unbeaten.

Today we welcome Jeanfield Swifts to Canniepairt. They have had their problems recently but I truly hope that these are now behind them. Andy Brannigan has recently been re-appointed as manager and under his stewardship, I'm positive their fortunes will improve.

I hope you all enjoy the game today and that the 'Port supporters will, as usual, get right behind the team.

regards, Kenny Bunoo:

TODAY'S GAME

Jeanfield Swifts are the visitors to Tayport this afternoon . It was a fixture which, at one point, we didn't think we would get this season. Swifts found themselves struggling to get a team on the park for one reason or another and asked to scratch from a couple of cups to allow themselves the opportunity to try and get things together. It looked bleak at one stage but fortunately the break seems to have done the trick. Everything' s OK now and the Perth team arrive at the Canniepairt with their batteries recharged and raring to go i n their first appearance since early last month .

Andy Brannigan, a player/manager at Kinnoull and a player at both Hill O'Beath and, this season, Newburgh since last with Jeanfield , is the man charged with keeping the Simpson Park club in the first division. The ex-St Johnstone man is under no illusions as to the task which faces him but he has been doing a b i t of wheeling and dealing and officials Paddy Winton and Magnus Wylie are confident big Andy can turn the club around .

Although essentially brought as a manager , Brannigan is likely to turn out today in a key defensive role . Another key man at the back is goalkeeper Mark Murray who rarely has a bad game against the Port and whose abilit i es were recognised by selection for the Tayside Under 23's .

Brought back into the fold are former players Graeme McNaughton and Brian Williamson who have both returned from Kinnoull. Another ' old boy' returning i s veteran striker Ian Shepherd who has been s i gned from neighbours Scone . Likely to catch the eye up front will be young striker Kenny Clarke who has been interesting Dundee FC .

Swifts record at the Canniepart isn't too impressive. Indeed they have still to record a victory here after seven visits. It's been seven visits and seven defeats to date with the Port registering 24 goals to Swifts 2 .

Tayport got the result the rest of the division would have wanted last Saturday when they pegged back leaders North End . In so doing they played with a confidence, commitment and panache which hasn't always been evident this season .

Many of the injury problems have been resolved with only Billy Coventry and Barrie Gray still out of action . Covy's recovery is likely to be quicker than Barrie's. Baz is awaiting an operation to repair his shoulder. It '.s so prone to dislocation that it even popped out in bed the other night.

Although a number of the other Tayside clubs are on OVD business today, two of our top of the table r i vals meet at North End Park in the league where leaders Carnoustie are the visitors. Will we see a new league leader for the third time in as many weeks?

PRESS REPORT EXTRA

THE SUN "I was thinking 'will I be able to play football again? 'and 'Am I going to lose my leg?' ... It's been a gradual battle back to fitness for the Tayport star • ... 'I asked about piaying again when I got the all-clear from the doc. He didn't say No so that was good enough for me. It's not in my nature to worry about it . I'll go out and give it my best shot. I won't kid myself on though, and if I know I can't reach the same standards after this then I'll chuck it. But with the way I feel at the moment I don't see that happening" (27/9/97) Sean Wilkie describing his feelings to The Sun on his return to action following his horrific leg injury. Sean played in the Tennent's Sevens and then played his first game of the season at North End last Saturday. If there's no reaction Sean should be in his normal No.6 jersey this afternoon.

'FORGET THE REST -

GET THE BEST' •

SINCE WE LAST MET ..... Following the waygoing of Dave Baikie t'o Arbroath and the retiral of George Malone and Ged Reilly, the committee moved to fill the gap by appointing Kenny Bunce from Elmwood as his replacement . Kenny brought with him George Nicol as coach and appointed the weel kent face of Jimmy Hunter to the backroom staff. Jim had played a major coaching role in St Joseph's record breaking season just finished.

On the playing front, Allan Kennedy announced that he was quitting and Gary Maher decided that he had travelled from Auchterarder long enough and took the opportunity of a transfer to Scone Thistle.

Into the squad came Ian Greig, signed from Arbroath SC, Martin Wilkinson, originally from Huddersfield, but now at RAF Leuchars and young Barry Gardiner from Forfar Athletic. All three fitted the necessary criteria for joining Tayport - they're less than 5'6" in height!

Pre-season went well with a 2-1 win from a weekend trip to the country's northernmost senior football outpost , Wick Academy of the Highland League, a win at Armadale and a draw at Pollok.

Early season holiday problems were compounded by Sean Wilkie's absence following leg surgery and Steven Stewart's injury ten minutes into the season proper. However we recovered from the shock 3-6 reverse that day to collect something from each of our league games since and to knock Bankfoot out of the NEC Cup.

Ewan Cameron had been impressive in pre-season in a midfield role but decided, after only getting a place on the bench after missing the previous game through injury, to walk out of the club.

The early part of the season became a bit disjointed with a couple of Saturdays off in September, one of which was to accommodate the Scottish Gas Under 23 final, Central v Tayside. Barry Gardiner and Allan Ramsay played their part in that fine win for Tayside.

The holiday and injury interruptions are best illustrated by the fact that new signing Ian Greig' s first full 90 minutes wasn't until last Saturday at North End, eight games into the new season.

Turf specialists were brought into do some work on the Canniepairt playing surface, ravaged after years of car boot sales and 11 months a year football for seven seasons. Work on improving spectator facilities continued and a telephone news/information line for supporters was put in place .

We returned to Pollok two weeks ago to defend our Tennents Sevens title but, despite impressive form in the early stages, we were unable to reach the heights of the previous year but finished a creditable 3rd.

SNIFFING ABOUT WITH THE SNOUT

CONGRATULATIONS to Jimmy Hunter whose wife Gillian presented him with a son (Ryan James) the other week. It won't be long till he can get wee Ryan in a pair of Allan Ramsay's old boots!

JACK McCartney's spell as manager at Irvine Meadow didn't last too long. After a good start in Ayrshire the former Shettleston supremo failed to deliver the goods to the satisfaction of the committee and a parting of company therefore became inevitable.

NORTH END are one of the Tayside clubs committed to giving their fans a modicum of comfort. They've bought the Fair Play enclosure from Tannadice and have applied for planning permission to erect it on the south side of North End Park. The enclosure became surplus when United decided to extend their stand which is now almost complete.

DAVIE Martin, the Laird of Lochee when United were going well a few years ago, is back at Thomson Park. Davie left to take up the reins at Arbroath SC but parted company with SC earlier this year. He's since been linked with about every job that's been going - and some that have not - but has failed to secure a position until now. Things have turned a full circle having been taken on as coach by the Griers to replace Ian Simpson. Davie clearly had an immediate impact. United scored twice as many goals in Saturday's game - 2 - as they had scored in their previous six league games.

GARY Maher has had a good start at his new club Scone Thistle since his transfer from the Canniepairt. A straight run of four wins put then in pole position for the one promotion place on offer this season.

ALTHOUGH early season form hardly suggests it, look for big things from St Andrews United this year . According to TM-St A~ Citizen "Saints played well in this match (2-0 v Steelend Vies.) and are becoming a very positive force in Junior Football"

A Directive from the SJFA has informed clubs that disciplinary points will only apply to league games from now on. A player cautioned in a cup tie will be fined £4.50 and if he is ordered off on a second yellow card the fine will be £8.50. Also, from this Saturday, only eight people will be allowed in the dugout/technical area. These names have to go to the referee before the game. Further, players sent off will have to remain in the dressing room until the end of the game instead of possibly returning to the technical area.

JIM HENRY who left The Canniepairt for Arbroath SC last season has been transferred to Montrose FC. Dave Baikie had Jim on trial for Arbroath earlier but, said Dave, • Although I made Jim an offer to sign, I feel there were doubts on both sides. I had him at Tayport, but I think both parties had reservations about renowing the acquaintance and I was not totally disappointed"

'TENNENTs· POLLOK SEVENS.

As most of you will know Sunday the 28th September was the day we travelled to Pollok to defend the annual 'TENNENTS SEVENS' tournament Alth h we lost to a very liv~ly Maryhill side in the 'semis' a good day was had by :i~~ Made better by ?eating our Hosts and old rivals Pollok in the shoot out for third lace . ARTHURLIE 3

MARYHILL 4 Maryhill opened their account with a wonder strike from the right hand corner of the eighteen yard box which Fraser got a hand to but could not keep it out . After this Templeton for Maryhill took control of the game with breath taking dribbling skills which entertained the large crowd and put Maryhill in the driving seat with a brilliant individual effort . 'PORT tried to take the game to their opponents but in doing so allowed them more room to hit on the break on another two occasions finishing worthy winners by four goals to nil .

3rd Place Penalty Shoot Out. TAYPORT 4 POLLOK 2

Two fantastic saves by Fraser in the 'Port goal from Polloks first two penalties meant the Tayport players had to keep cool heads and hit the net with the remaining kicks . After Rossie and Hobby followed by Ian Greig had netted it was left to Cov'y to step up and stroke home the winner in his usual nonchalant style .

FINAL ARTHURLIE 2 MARYHILL 1

Maryhill had obviously taken too much out of themselves in the semi and Arthurlie were .too strong for them in the final . With the two one score line flattering Maryhill in a final which became a bit scrappy towards the end . Well done to Arthurlie who deserved the victory on the day but who only have a loan of the trophy 'till we bring it back to Tayport next year.

****** FIFE HERALD "Flash Barrie secures points ••.•. Tayport had the mercurial Barrie Gray to thank for the three points. With his undoubted ability, the 'Port support will be looking for displays such as this from him on a more regular basis" Tayport 4 Lochee United O (20/9/97)
