NEXT WEEK'S FIXTURE home v GLENROTHES

in East of Scotland Cup 3rd Round , kick off2.30pm at The Canniepairt

Today is our final league game at home, leav ing visits to Penicuik and Ballingry to be slotted in at the beginning of May to comp lete our programme.

Although the Junior calendar has been disrupted throughout the past five month s, the majo rity of clubs will finish their seasons comfortab ly. Newtongran ge have already finished their Premier League campa ign and in the Super Leag ue, St Andrews United have only one fixture left to complete their seaso n. Saints will be breathin g a sigh of relief given , there 's no relegation this seaso n.

EAST OF SCOTLAND CUP DRAW

The 3rd rou nd draw is

Ballingry Rovers or Penicuik Ath letic v Lin lithgow Rose Bathgate Thistle or Ke lty Hearts (Monday 22 April) v Armadale Thistle

Broughty Ath letic v Bonnyrigg Rose Ath letic Da lkeith Thistle v Luncarty or Bo ' ness United (next Saturday)

Newton grange Star v Lochee United Rosyth v Jeanfie ld Swifts

Tayport v Glenrothes Tranent v Pumpher ston or Musselburgh Athletic (Today)

Holders St And rews United went out to Oak ley United on penaltie s in the first round

Semi Final 1st leg results

Linlithgow Rose 3 - 1 Shotts Bon Accord

Shotts cancelled out the game 's opening goal but fell behind again before the break and grabbed the vital third goal with 20 mins left . A big attendance is assured at Hannah Park today as the cup holders attempt to retrieve the two goal de ficit. Rose have had a great season , though, and it would be a surprise if Manager Mark Bradley allowed their lead to slip.

2nd legs are on this afternoon

Auchinleck Ta lbot 1-1 Rutherglen Glencairn

Talbot took an early lead v Glencairn but struggled after being reduced to ten men following a second yellow card and lost the equaliser with a few minutes to play. Gelling a draw away from home might suggest that Glencaim have one foot in the Final, but that ' s certainly not the case and few wou ld back against Talbot reaching the Final.

Today's Game

McBookie.com Premier Division

Tayport v Dundee Violet

We welcome the player s and officia ls of Dunde e Violet to the Canniepa irt this afternoon. Many of cou rse are fami liar faces and none more so than Tam McMahon who ran the Tay

port Arm s for many years . Ta m is see n (below, right), with the Midland s AFA 's Gray Trophy having presented the awards to Gordon Hughes ( left) and George Ritchie (right) at Tayport FC's POY event in 1978.

It is the Glenesk club ' s second visit to the Canniepairt this seaso n, the Glenesk club having recorded a 2-0 win in a League Cup

tie here in August. Our visitors also came out on top when the sides met in this season's ear lier Premier League fixture at Glenesk, winning 2- 1 . As the score lines suggest, there was little between the sides on these occasions . As the season draw s to a close , the stake s are high with Tayport need ing a win and Violet clinging on to the hope that a late run will take them into the top four come the end of the seaso n.

Violet have had an up and down league seaso n to date . They started off in great fash ion, going to the top of the table with wins over the subsequent promotion certainties Newton grange Star and Ballingry Rovers. Then a slip-up v Oak ley set them back on their heel s and that inconsistency has been the pattern since. For exa mple, in recent week s, there has been a win ove r Bathgate , defeat s by Dalkeith and Oak ley, then a draw v Ballingry.

The re's little doubt that Manager Jim Fin layso n will have his troops we ll up for today's derby enco unter . In addition there 's added spice with player s in each team having played for both clubs. The Glenesk squad will inclu de Adam O'Connor who played 23 games between 2008 and 20 I O and Bryan Duell who netted 22 goa ls in 60 starts between 200 5 and 2007. Gary Robert son arrived at the Canniepa irt in February 2012 in a swap deal which took Grant Manzie to Glenesk.

In contrast with Tayport 's yo ung squad, it's a very experienced group which represents Violet today with most of their players having turned out for a number of clubs at this level. Late st recrui t is full back Mark Kelly who kicked off his career at Harp but who is ineligible this afternoon as he is currently serving the secon d of a three match suspensio n.

Tayport will be without Stephen Tront whose season is prob ably at an end after taking up a post offsho re on an oi lrig somewhere in the North Sea

I'd like to extend a warm welcome to Jim Finlayson, his back room staff, the player s and everyone associated with the Violet as they come to the Canniepairt for what will be our final home leag ue fixture of the campaign.

Last season, without playing poorly , we strugg led a bit to get results at home and our away form was very good . This term, our home record is up there with the best, so far. In order to progress as a team, we need to continue in that vein.

Today' s opponents are still very much in the promotion hunt and, like us, they will be going all out to win this game. In fact, we are see ing a lot of attacking football in the league this year and that is partly due to the fact that there is no relegation. Teams at the bottom of the table , for example, don't need to be defensive and hope to sneak a resu lt.

Last Saturday saw us win at Glenrot hes. We weren't at our best, but sti ll had enough to see us through . It is unrealistic to expect the team to perform at the top of their game week after week. The key is to pick up points , irrespective of the performance. I think we've managed to

do that a few times this season.

That said, I doubt very much that we could win this afternoon's match without being at our best. Jim Finlayson and his staff have done a good job thus far, after a title-w inning season last year. The games against Violet have been reasonably close, compet itive encounters and

today will be no different.

Our focus is very much on today's game. I've told the player s not to look too far ahead or worry about league positions. They have to focus on the match itself. It's like when you see players asking the ref how long there is to go, in the final coup le of minutes , rather than concentrate on the job at hand. You play until the final whist le blows. It's the same princ iple in

this league campaign.

Finally , as it's our last home league match, on behalf of everyone at the club, I want to thank the supporters for their backing this season, home and away. I'm sure you'll all get beh ind the team again today. Enjoy the game.

The last fortnight has see n Tayport claim another two vita l East Premier League wins , one at home, one away.

Two weeks ago , Jean field Swifts visited the Canniepairt looking to do the double over their opponents, having won in Perth ear lier in the campa ign. In truth , that never looked likely , but the contest did seem destined to end in a draw , after Tayport had passe d up a few good opportunities . Stefan Elvin and Simon Murray , for example , both hit the woodwork during the first half

After ninety-four minutes had elapsed , the dead lock was finally broken . 'Port won a free kick wide on the right and Jake Mair delivered the set-piece , left-footed , beyond Duncan Bruce and into the top corner of the net.

The goal sparked scenes of jubilation amon gst the Tayport contingent , given the dramatic nature of the counter.

Events at the Warout last Saturday were less dramatic , but John McGlashan's men edged the Fife derby at Glenrothes by the odd goal in three. Again , 'Port had the better of the chances but did not take the lead until the 44th minutes , via a penalty kick. Steven McPhee was fouled inside the box and Simon Murray netted from the spot.

The Glens, however , responded immediately , with Lyall Shaw breaking free to tuck home the equaliser, seconds before the ha! f-time whistle.

Fortunately , the Tayport heads did not go down and early in the second half, the visitors regained the lead . Home defender Gavin Moffat brought down Simon Murray and the referee again pointed to the spot. Again , Murray dispatched the penalty past 'keeper Jamie Roberts.

There was another penalty kick on the hour , at the other end of the park, but lain Ross comfortably saved from Lyall Shaw and there would be no further scoring.

Let's hope that the winning run can continue today, although Violet will provide stubborn opposition .

Support the 'Port!

The Easter Groundhop

Tayport FC catering adviser Joe Kimmet returned earlier this month from a Groundhop weekend during which took in eight BAR IS Nort hern Countie s East League [Yorkshire] Division I matc hes in forty e ig ht hours - ---- --

Joe reports that on Thursday even ing (Maundy Thur sday) the Groundhop was scheduled to kick off at 7.45pm at AFC Em ley v Botte sford Town but there was a late change to instead take

in a game at Atherton Colliery .

On Good Friday it was Glasshoughton Welfare v Noste ll MW ( 11am); Pontefrac t Coller ies v Selby Town ( 1.45pm) ; Hemswo rth MW v Knaresborough Town (4.30pm) ; Athersley Ree v

Askern Villa (7.45pm)

On Saturday it was the derby encounter , Bridlin gton Town v Scarborou gh Athletic ( 11.30am); Pickering Town v Worksop Parramore (3.30pm); Finish ing off at Tadca ster Albion v Barton

Town Old Boys (7.30pm)

Ground hop UK organi ses this popular annua l Easter Groundhop. Each club chosen to stage one of the groundhop games welcomes with open arm s the drov es of groundhopp ers. No surpri se, given the boost the Groundhop gives to the attendance, programme sales, merchandi se, food sales and not least, the clubhou se bars. And with a bar in every clubhou se visited, there were some very merry ground hoppe rs when their coaches left the last groun d each day en route to

their hotel s!

Attract ing a Groundhop weekend has the potential to be a lucrative novelty for the East Region but there would need to be a green light from the high heid y ins and coopera tion from the c lubs There' s little doubt it would take a bit of organising but , where there 's a will, there's a way. A major drawb ack is the fact that we don ' t have a Friday holid ay, but two Friday evening games and four on a Saturday could surely be shoehorned in any weekend in spring or autumn.

Footnote Joe 's excursion down south didn ' t end at Tadcaster , howeve r. On the Sunday he took in the Ice Hocke y game between Streatham Redskins and Bracknell Hornet s. Up and on the go ear ly on Easte r Monday to take in Chichester City v Arundel in the Sussex County League at 11 am then on to Portsmouth for Pompey v Tranmere Rover s at 3pm .. On Tuesday it was Brighton v Charlton Ath letic , fin ishing off with Tonb ridge Angels v Weston Super Mare on Wedne sday. Oh, and Joe wi ll miss today's game v Violet He ' s at Derby County v Peterborough United .

SNIFFING AROUND WITH THE SNOUT

More on the Dundee Violet ' s appea l agai nst the £750 fine and forfeiture of three po ints for failing to fulfil a fixture with Newtong range. The club 's representative on the East Region 's Management Com-mittee, Davie Don, resigned from the said committee with immed iate effect, exp ressing his disap point-ment at the punishment handed out to his club .

Ano ther red card for Jamie Mack ie last week . The former midfielder , ordered off for Tayport v Glenrothe s prior to his tran sfe r to St Andrews United, was first in the showers again afte r bein g dis-mi ssed in Sa ints ' 0-4 home defeat by Bonnyrigg last week . Sti ll on fom1er playe rs, Gran t Manzie was amongs t the goals for Oak ley United v Annada le but still finished on the losing side as the Lo-thi ans s ide reco rded a 4-3 win. Gra ham N icol, who wo re Tayport ' s colour s from 1999 to 200 1, and was most rece ntl y in a manage ment role at St Andrews Amat eurs , has taken up a coac hing position at Newburg h Jun iors, anothe r of his former clubs .

Such are the changes which have taken place at The Can niep airt ove r the last 50 odd years , not too many will be aware nor will indeed remember the days when th e railway ran strai ght through what in now part of thi s football gro und . When the line was first ope ned in 1850 , it was the main east coas t railway line from the south , Tayport (then Ferry Port on Craig) being the terminu s for wago ns to be ferried across the Tay . All that changed , of course , when the Tay Rail Bridge was built in 1878 and a mor e direct line from Edinbur gh to the north (the curr ent line) via St Fort was put in place . The Edinbur gh to Tayport line , which was subsequently extend ed to Wormit and the Tay Brid ge, continued in place until 1956 when the stretch of line from Leuchar s to Taypo rt was taken up . After 106 yea rs, the last eve r direct train from Edinbur gh to Dundee via Tayport was on Sa turd ay 7th January I 956 , the 5. 10pm from Waverley Station , passing through The Cannie pairt where the enclo -sure is now situated , arriving at Tayport station at exac tly 9pm . It was met there by a sma ll gather-ing and a lon e piper playing the lament 'Lochaber No Mor e '. [this was the neares t they could get to ' Leuchars No More ', apparently!) . Do you know anyone who was at Taypo rt station that evening or anyone who has a photo graph of the occasion? The railway line throu gh The Canniepairt from the Tayport Spinning Works (now our sponsors, Scott & Fyfe ' s, international headquarter s) to Tayport stat ion and on to Dundee rem ained in place until the Tay Road Bridge was constructed some ten years later.

Ballingry Rovers have been fined £100 by the East Region JFA following a report by refe ree Lorraine Clark, of abuse comin g from the Rovers techni cal area durin g the ir game v Newto ngrange Star from a person not listed on the team lines. At the same meeting , following a letter from Ar-madale Thistle , Dundee Violet have been asked for the ir observations after they failed to tum up for post match hosp itality laid on by Amiad ale, despite having prev iously ag reed to do so .

The re have been all manner of post-matc h managerial rants captured on TV and YouTube over the years. Kevin Keegan 's outburst after Newcastle United v Manchester United come s to mind , but up there with the bes t is Eas t Fife manager Bill y Brown ' s outbur st at the Eas t Fife v Stenhousemuir post-match press confere nce last week. Billy clearly had had enough of the booing and barra ckin g of himself and his play ers . He took the stadium announ cer 's micro phon e at half time to have a blast but hadn ' t coo led down by full time and used the pre ss conference to shoot from the hip . You can watch the result on http://eastfifefc .info/ef-tv

Mark McG hee, Scotland manager Gordon Strachan ' s No.2 , was a guest of the SJFA after being asked to participate in the recent Emirate s Cup semi-fin al draw . A bit embarr ass ing, then, that the SJFA mana ged to spell hi s nam e wrongly on their official website press rele ases, desc ribin g him as Mark Mc Ghie. It' s been like that on the s ite for about a month now so either nobod y at Hampden has noticed or nobod y look s at the website or ma ybe nobody is both ered
