TODAY'S VISITORS - DUNDEE NORTH END

This afternoon's visitors, Dundee North End, are one of the best known Junior clubs in the country. Formed in 1896, The Dokens as they are nicknamed, have one of the best set-ups · in the Tayside Juniors with a well appointed social club adjacent to their ground just along the road from Dens Park.

To celebrate their centenary year the North End Social Club have sponsored the prestigious Inter-Regional Trophy, the final of which will be played at North End Park on Saturday 3rd June between ourselves and Dundee Violet .

North End can finish fourth in the league and they still retain an interest in the Whyte & Mackay Cup as well as the Cream of the Barley Trophy . A 3-2 league win at home to Arbroath SC on Wednesday night saw them extend a good run which has seen them taste defeat only once in their last seven outings.

Ian Christie, who played here at the Canniepairt in our inaugural season shares the goalkeeping duties with Mark Hornby who came into the picture after young keeper Bruce Alexander, pitched into the fray after Christie had been taken off injured, carried the can for North End's defeat by ourselves at Christmastime.

North End boast one of the most experienced back fours in the League. Eddie McAuley and Mike Feeney are both Junior Internationals and lack nothing in terms of commitment. Right back Derek Paul is another who is in with the bricks at North End Park. His full-back partner is likely to be ex- Jeanfield Swifts man Bruce Tindal.

North End get their fair share of goals from midfield men Bobby Douglas, a seasoned campaigner in the Tayside Juniors, Billy Cooper and Ian Gray. Newcomer this season Tommy King was listed as substitute when we met in December but the Berwick Rangers delayed transfer man will be looking to start the game today. Another new face who didn't feature in that game but is in the pool for today is Kevin McGuckin.

The main goalthrust this season has come from Brent Vance.last season's top scorer and with seventeen to his credit this season, and the club's close season signing from Broughty Athletic, Stevie Ross. Stevie has proved to be an astute signing by the Dokens, his all-action style contributing 20 goals so far this term. Another who knows the route to goal is Mike Harkins who is into double figures for the season .

Recent signings from the amateur ranks are Scott Flynn and Mark Mccord. Mccord, signed from DCFE, had been tracked by severa l Junior sides but opted to try his luck with North End .

'IBffl ~ ~ = ~ ffflf~'ffl; ~ lJlITdA\W The semi final draws for the three local competitions, the Intersport, the Cream of the Barley and the jewel in the Tayside crown, the Whyte & Mackay (the former Currie Cup) now some 84 years old will probably be made after next Saturday's ties. Semi-finalists are:- Whyte & Mackay - Tayport, Scone or Kinnoull, Downfield or North End and Kirrie Thistle or Lochee United. Intersport - East Craigie, Elmwood or Forfar Albion, Forfar West End or Carnoustie , Tayport or St Joseph ' s and Jeanfield or Arbroath Vies. Cream of the Barley- Carnoustie or Jeanfield, Balbeggie or Blairgowrie ~ Downfield or Lochee United and the winners of this afternoon ' s game between ourselves and North End.

'l'he (Bakf r's (Bit I'd like firstlv 10 welcome our visitors Dundee North End to the Canniepain for this Cream of the Barie;; quarter final tie and a good afternoon 10 the Pon Support. Since last Saturday we've been successful in three important games for the club.

The fir st was the North End Centenary Cup semi - final , a 5-0 win over Aberdeen Sunnybank. I've got to say that I was delighted with the scoreline but, as always, there's definitely room for improvement. We certainly didn 't start the game well at all . But once the fir st goal went in, there seeme d to be an inevitability about the outcome. Their heads seemed to drop which is something that I didn't expect to happen with so little time gone in the game .

\Ve then moved to Monday night with a Whyte & Mackay semi-f inal place at stake. Bank.foot provided th e opposition. Their manager was overhead telling his players at halftime "We managed to frustrate the m for 35 minutes" He must have forgotten about the 120 minutes earlier in the season. But it's a sad day when a manager thinks along those lines and I felt sorrv for the lad who was asked to play just in front of the back. nine' Still, that's their problem. We won the tie 6- 0 and are in the semi -final.

Probablv the most important of the three was our home win over Downfield on Wednesdav. 1-0 was the sco reline . We definitely deserved our victory and I felt that we had some · exce llent performances, but we also had some ordinary ones which really was the difference between the narrow victory we got and a comfortable win. But I can' t rea lly ever recall seeing a classic between ourselves and the Spiders. Two points was the objective and tha t 's what we gained. It sets us up nicely for our final league game of the

seaso n.

I'm looking forward to this afternoon's game with North End . We've met on two occasions this season and I have enjoyed both. If I remember correctly, we were a bit lucky to wm the first one - a late Gary Maher goal gave us a victory - and the second was a 3 I win at North End.

Our players must realise that they 've go t a game on their hands today. but they also _know that. ii they play to their capabilities. then we can achieve a victory and see Tayport 11110

the semi final. SUPPORT THE PORT, DAVE BAIKIE.

TODAY'S GAME Of all the establi shed clubs in the Tayside I st Division , North End are probably the club which we have met on the fewest occasions . Apart from two league games a season since promotion, we have previously met each other on only two occasions. {)uite remarkable considering we have had the potential to be drawn together in a total of thirty cup compe titi ons during this time.

This afternoon is our third cup meeting . The first meeting was the Perthshire Adverti ser Cup Final in 1993 which Tayport lost I O and the most recent was in last season's Cream of the Barley Trophy 1st round when we recorded a fine 6 - I win at North End Park.

North End are here today seeking their first win at the Canniepairt . They did come close on their last visit earlier this season when a late goal from Gary Maher was all that separated the sides .

On their day North End can match the best but their form has been patchy this season, resulting in their league challenge fizzling out early and a failure to make a sp lash in either of the major cup competitions .

The Dokens have had a couple of hard fought matches to reach this stage of the compe tition - seeing off Kinnoull after extra time and eliminating Violet , by 2- I last Saturday. We came from behind 10 beat Forfar West End by 2- 1 the other week but trounced Broughty Athletic 8-0 in round 2 last midweek.

Today's game will be played 10 a finish with extra time and penalty kicks if necessary .

'IMS-. PA Cup l'lnal Is - 90111 --plckNup-plec:Natt.r--==::....-•--tr-.

Now months of controversy are ending, with millions of people longing for the biggest club event of the lot to live up to its reputation and produce a showpiece.

Since August , English soccer has been a catalogue of catastrophe , a saga of sleaze, that has obscured most of what good there has been . No wonder so many people are keen for Manchester United and Everton to give us all a lift by putting on a show of football's arts, without the punctuation of snarling confrontation between players, rows over referees, and violence among spectators .

There are players capable of doing so . Even without Cantona, even though sp many League points have been squandered , Un~ed have a siring of quality captures still full of ambttion no matter how many honours they have collected . One, Mark Hughes, will set a record for Wembley FA Cup Finals n he takes a fourth winning medal: last season he became only the 17th man with three.

A comparison of the playing staffs indicates that Everton have little chance , but that has been said of several Wembley winners - not all of them in the distant past.

Joe Royle, a losing player in 1968 , later served a long managerial apprenticeship with Oldham before returning to his first club. The turnabout since then has been remarkable and those who know their Final history will not be too surprised ij Royle follows managers such as Livingstone (Newcastle 1955), Buckingham and Ashman (West Bromwich 1954 and 1968) and Lyall (Wesl Ham 1975) in winning this trophy in his first season

For a club with so many supporters, United are rernar1<ably unpopular . And so although the head says Un~ed to win, the heart is with Everton, ff only because they have come back from a bad spell, so bad that lesser clubs would have crumbled .

We all hope for a match fit to put before royal princes . But do not be surprised if we do not get one. There have been so many Final disappointments before now.

But the FA Cup is still a great contest and we have had haij a century of wondrous feats to look back on, haven't we?

I first saw Wembley in 1946, when I was a kid and the stadium was still bright and fresh , full of magic and not ankle-deep in litter . I've seen rt dozens of times since, building up a stack of memolies .

Such as Arsenal , oddly attired in gold shirts , repulsing everything my Liverpool heroes could throw at them in the drizzle of 1950, and again in the blazing heat of 1971. Such as Newcastle, demons in those licorice-allsort stripes , seeing off Blackpool in 1951, with Jackie Milbum's two dazzling goals , and wearing down Arsenal a year later , then doing the same to Manchester City in 1955, despite the heroics performed by Bert Trautmann, the best goal keeper I've ever seen. Such as gallant Preston's resistance to a vibrant young West Ham in 1964, when they were level or in front for all but the last 30 seconds, and then missed promotion as well .

I think of the lucky ones , like Jimmy Greenhoff , for ever credited wrth a goal for Manchester United in 1977 when a shot going for a corner flag hrt him and

looped into the Live<pool net. Like Roger Osborne in 1978, given one chance and scoring the only FA Cup goal of his 12-year career at Ipswich, after they had hit one Arsenal bar and two Arsenal posts. Like Trevor Brooking of West Ham two years later, again wrth Arsenal on the wrong end, scoring the winner "when the ball hrt me on the head and went in" .

And David O'Leary, twice a winner with Arsenal, 14 years apart , ,v,d both times by a goal in the last minute. The other side of that particular coin concerns Douglas Holden, a last-minute k>ser with Bolton in 1953 and w~ Preston in 1964.

That Bolton team were perhaps the unluckiest losers of all, after hanging on wrth nine fit men, only to concede two goats in the last three minutes to a team inspired by the 38-year-old youngster gambolling down Blackpool ' s right wing. Stan ley Matthews, of course.

I was lucky enough to be in the crowd behind lhe

goal Bolton defended in the second haij, on leeve from natiooal service , clutching my 3s. 6d . ticket (what rt was to have a father with a btt of influence) and screaming myself hoarse as the old sorcerer weaved his spells. Among the pomp and circumstance, the goals and the misses and the injuries - remember that gloomy run of breaking bones and tearing ligaments, almost ooe a year from 1952 to 19617- Matthews takes first place for an individual perlormance .

But the prize for THE outstanding single moment, THE match-turning piece of inspiralion , goes to a player who gained few medals during a longish career, and even at his peak could pass unnoticed in virtually any street.

Jim Montgomery 's save from Peter Lorimer in the Sunderland-Leeds game of 1973 defied all

logic. Trevor Cherry 's diving header had brought a good stop from Monty, but Lorimer - a splendid and notably calm taker of chances - had virtually the whole net to aim at when the rebound reached him. "One-one• says the voice on the video, and so we all thought. But somehow , Monty slopped rt. We didn'l believe rt then, and we can hardly believe rt now.

Sunderland , inspired , held on to win with Porterlield's eal1y goal . They did no1 have an interna· tional in their team, although some went on to earn such honours: Leeds had 10 plus Chefry , later capped (and to lose some teeth in his cou,try 's service).

Leeds, figuratively , lost their collective teeth that day. Only rarely have they been much of a force in the game since. Nor have Sunderland. But the parade of teams and individuals goes on, and the FA Cup Final is still a day for historians to savour. the climax of soccer's grealest tournament.

Bar none.

THE Tayside Juniors have fixed the dates for their cup finals, although in most case the venues have yet to be decided. The North End Centenary Cup Final takes place at North End Park on Saturday 3rd June. The Cream of the Barley Trophy is on Saturday 10th June. The Whyte & Mackay Final is on Monday 12th June and the Intersport Shield Final is on Thursday 15th June at Glenesk Park .

MARK down Sunduy 11th June in your diary. That's the date of the Tayport FC Gala Day on the Canniepairt, the main feature of which will be a match between Kevin Thom's Select Xl and the Celebrity team Dukla Pumpherston Sawmill & Tannery Xl. Dukla was founded by Tony Roper of Rab C.Nesbitt fame and Chic Young of Sportscene and features former stars of the Scottish soccer scene and showbi~ personalities. Also featured will be youngsters 5-a - side games, tug o' war, sideshows.pipe band etc. And the punters won't go hungry, there will be burgers and the like on sale and a beer tent to quench your thirst.

Tayside secretary Jock Myles won't be at the Cream of the Barley Final on June 10th. He'll be at another match that day when he takes his daughter down the aisle for her marriag8 i.n Broughly Ferry

LOCHEE United striker Ross Graham has signed for Brechin City. Th8 big striker didn't do himself justice in the OVD semi final but his 27 goals this season to date (not 19 as it says elsewhE:re in the Progl, have caught the Seniors' attE:ntion.

IT'S a poor show tomorrow when we aren't getting the OVD Cup final between Whitburn and Camelon on TV. Apparently Grampian aren't taking the game, choosing to show the Aberdeen v Dunfermlin8 game live instead. STV are showing the Junior Final, however, but, unfortunately, not many of us on Tayside get STV .. It will be a pity if this is the case, particularly as we were ..,Jiminated by Whitburn and played Camelon last season as did North End and Downfield this season.

WELL, it's al 1 down to the last couple of games to detE:rmine the outcome of th0 A. T .& T. Lb1gue Championship. St Joseph' s v Taypo1t next Tuesday then St Joseph's v Lochee United on Monday week. We're a point behind with a bE:tter goal difference, so you can work out for yourself the significance of the matches. Betw01en lla" games we me.::t St Joseph' s down here next Saturday in the Intersport Shield. An interesting week? No wonder Joey's boss Les Barr chose to watch us instead of his own team on \·Jednesd.:iy past.

TAYPORT ~uateurs looked doomed to relegation a month ago aft1er suffc1ing nine successive defeats but an unbeaten eight game run since has seen them climb to a comfortable position of safety, i11 fact they'll probably end not too far off a promotion place .
