Adult & Student Teams
Summer 2014 You are needed. The Baptist churches in the United Kingdom are in need of church teams who will come and give one week of their life to assist them in impacting their communities. You can help by joining with other churches of the TEBA to form teams who will provide Holiday Clubs (VBS), School Assembly Programs, Worship Events and Cultural Exchange. The Baptist Churches in the Northern Baptist Association are located just below Scotland in the northeast part of the United Kingdom. You will have an unique chance to grow in understanding of another culture and to gain an appreciation of God’s work around the world while meeting some wonderful people by staying in host homes.
The schedule format will be leaving from Houston on a

Connecting Churches to Change Our World
LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min. This past Sunday I was at FBC Shepherd for the 20 Year Anniversary Celebration of Pastor Preston and Pam Baker who came to the church in 1993. The church did a wonderful effort to show the Bakers their love and appreciation for their faithful service and effective ministry. The celebration was tasteful and included a number of affirmations from those who were now in ministry in part from the influence of the Baker’s lives. FBC Shepherd embodies a grateful church that loves its pastor and family and wanted to say “Thank You” in a tangible way. With October being Clergy Appreciation Month the example of FBC Shepherd is an example to all of our churches to show appreciation for the clergy who serve them. The need to sense appreciation is not unique to members of the clergy but can be lacking in the experience of too many. With the 24/7 nature of ministry, the challenge of variant expectations, the ongoing calendar responsibilities, the need to be available, the sense of living in a fishbowl, financial pressures, and a host of other daily realities can grind down the most resilient of ministers. Consider some of these startling facts:
· 1,500 clergy leaving pastoral ministry each month. The Barna Research Group · 61% of congregations have forced a pastor to leave. Christianity Today · 83% of clergy spouses want their spouse to leave pastoral ministry. Hartford Institute for Religious Research · 90% of clergy in all denominations will not stay in ministry long enough to reach the age of retirement. United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics · 50% of pastors indicated that they would leave the ministry if they had another way of making a living. Hartford Institute for Religious Research
You can be an encourager to your pastor, his family, and your church staff. There are a number of ways your church can show it ’s love during this special emphasis, but you don’t have to wait for October – you can be an encourager throughout the year. Some ways your church can be an encourager include:
Special Notes ~ Books ~ Gift Certificate/Card ~ Monetary Gift ~ Flowers (for wives) ~ Golf Outing Special Prayer ~ Reception following a Service ~ Mini-Vacation (a weekend trip out of town – maybe at a Bed & Breakfast)
Pay for your Minister and Wife to participate in the Annual TEBA Pastor & Wife Retreat There are a number of other ways your church can provide ongoing help and encouragement for your pastoral ministry staff. When a church provides ongoing training and assistance for ministry development it is a wonderful affirmation of the ministers value to the church. Encouraging your pastor to take regular time away to pray and reflect is also important in their being able to stay fresh and empowered for the work God has entrusted to them within your church family. Another impacting way to assist your minister is to provide a Sabbatical after they have reached a particular time of service with a church. A Sabbatical is becoming more prevalent within Southern Baptist churches as they have learned of the many benefits it provides. The Tennessee Baptist Convention notes, “A sabbatical is a specific period of time off granted to the minister for in-depth focus on professional and spiritual renewal and calling. It is a gift the congregation can give to pastor/staff in recognition of faithful ministry over an extended period of time. It is not a vacation or personal leave. Rather it is a time for creative and intentional meditation, reflection, study and “going deeper with God.” An important result of sabbatical (Spiritual renewal) is that the pastor/staff returns to the church field with renewed focus and energy to fulfill God's calling.’” During the month of October all of our churches will be receiving a packet of information on how your pastor could be given the opportunity to go on Sabbatical. We are excited to share that the Association has received a significant gift to help our bi-vocational Pastors be able to enjoy a Sabbatical as well. I believe that the nature of the body of Christ is to be expressive of gratitude for the Lord and the ones who serve as His under-shepherds. Too often we don't realize how important it is for us to say thanks—we think others are doing so but that doesn't always happen. Lets all commit to be encouragers. If we all do, God will be honored. Please allow us to help you be an encourager to your ministry staff members. In Kingdom service Roger Yancey, Executive Director
