LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min.

PERSEVERANCE by Darrell Ingram

A host of resources and training is available to you and your church at the TEBA. On a regular basis we assist churches, ministry staff members, and lay leadership in a variety of ways. Training takes place both onsite at the local church or at the TEBA Resource and Conference Center. What follows is a partial list of some of the ways we can help your church or ministry team members.

Demographics & Values Reports. Every church in the TEBA can receive a free Demographic Report that can be a radius area around your church or a shape or configuration of your choice. You will know who is presently in your ministry area and the Values they hold including worship style, teaching, and an assortment of other preferences and concerns.

Missional Strategy Development. We can help you understand where your church is in its Missional Strategy and how to develop an effective Missional Strategy. Through a process of self-assessment you will come to understand your present reality, its values, challenges, and how to move forward to a greater level of effectiveness.

Moving Your Church Forward. Want to understand why your church is at its present level? While every church is not supposed to be the same size they all have the responsibility to effectively impact their community. Allow us to help your church identify its present reality and what steps to consider moving it to a different level.

Church Unique CoLab. Is your church ready to discover the unique way God has shaped it to minister in your community? Beginning in September your ministry team can be part of a Church Unique Co-Lab that will lead you to discover God’s unique Vision for your church.

Deacon Retreat. We are looking forward to having Dr. Jim Henry, Pastor Emeritus of FBC Orlando, former President of the SBC and now the Pastor of Downtown Baptist Church in Orlando and author of multiple works on Deacon Ministry come lead our 2018 Deacon Retreat. You will join with other churches at Trinity Pines Retreat Center on March 2-3 to fellowship and grow together in your understanding of effective Deacon Ministry.

Ministry Staff and Lay Leadership Team Development. We provide a host of resources to assist you in your ministry team development. Whether this is for your fulltime, bivocational, or lay leadership team we can provide tailored training to meet your ministry needs. Our heart is for your church to have a healthy, productive, and healthy team. We can provide tools including:

Personal DISCernment Development

Building Powerful Ministry Teams

Ministry Insights – Leading from Your Strengths

Birkman – Team Development and Personal Development Tools

Church Health. The TEBA is committed to helping your church family to be all that God intends. Through a consultation process that includes the access to a variety of tools and resources we can craft an individualized response to your church family to help is understand its present reality and future potential. Some of the tools available include the Church Health Survey, Natural Church Development, and the RESTART Process.

We thank you for allowing us to be part of your church’s effort to impact our community and our world.

CHURCH RESTART

Well, we finally did it…we bought a puppy. It had been 5 years since our dog of 13 years passed away and our daughter had been patiently waiting for this moment. England’s strict 6 month minimum quarantine law prevented us from bringing a dog to the mission field with us, but now that we were back and building stable lives in the U.S., the moment had arrived.

Isn’t she adorable?! What excitement and joy filled my daughter’s heart, watching the puppy play, run around, cuddle and do all the things little girls love about puppies. Life was indeed good.

Then a strange thing happened. After about 5 days or so, the newness of the puppy began wearing off as the responsibilities of owning a dog began changing her perspective. Things like feeding, potty training (and cleaning up all of the puppy’s mistakes during that training process), cleaning up her waste outside, cleaning up her toys in each room, etc. In fact, after a week of this regiment, my daughter was ready to throw in the towel and return the puppy.

I got to thinking about this scenario and started seeing parallels with the temptations that some pastors experience when tackling a new church assignment. The bubbling excitement of something new, combined with the hope of finally visualizing a strategy enacted can be a powerful elixir, especially if said pastors have

recently left other churches (and all of their attached issues) in the rearview mirror. But after a time, as the scope of local issues in the new location begins to be revealed, the glitter can tarnish rather quickly. The temptation, then, can be to approach these issues similar to my daughter (i.e. I don’t want to deal with these responsibilities any more). But brothers we have been called to something greater. That calling and our service to the Master compels us to persevere in the mud pit of life as God uses us to guide and shape those sheep in our care. And much like my puppy (who is now potty-trained), God mercifully begins to allow us to see the fruit of our perseverance a bit at a time. And realizing what could have been had we not persevered should give us immense joy in the present, hope for the future, and glorify God. May it be so.

Grace & Peace, Darrell Ingram

CHURCH/MISSION FOCUS: THE FELLOWSHIP, WILLIS By: Erin Frazier

Pastor Scott Young has been blessed to be the church planter and pastor of The Fellowship in Willis, TX since its beginnings in the summer of 2010. He is a 52-years-young husband, father of three sons (ages 25, 30, & 31), and grandfather to two beautiful 3-year-old girls who love to hear their “Papa” preach online.

The Fellowship officially launched under the sponsorship of FBC Willis and covenant partnership with TEBA and the SBTC during the Easter of 2011 and constituted as an autonomous church body in August 2015. Pastor Young says that “We are so grateful to the strength of the covenant group strategy.”

Aside from their small group ministry (where the bulk of discipleship and organic outreach occurs) their church sends electricians to countries such as Haiti, Guatemala, and Nicaragua to install solar panels for orphanages that do not have electricity. They are also involved in ministry to family members of prisoners that are awaiting execution in Huntsville and have a traveling music ministry that serves in a variety of contexts where the Gospel is shared and testimonies are given.

The biggest event taking place in the life of the church is that they are completing their new ministry facility that they built themselves and plan on opening just in time for their VBS during August 7-11th! Their grand opening celebration is scheduled for September 10th. The construction project was a tremendous seedbed to watch God work! For example, they had an oversized retention pond that needed $60,000 worth of dirt. Since dirt was not in out budget, they began to pray for dirt and moved forward in faith that God would provide while they were building. “We realized that God not only owns the cattle on the hills but he owns the hills as well, as he sent us the exact amount of dirt we needed, as well as enough to stock pile for our next building.”

Please be in prayer for The Fellowship, as they suspect to fill the new facility soon and anticipate going to dual services by Easter 2018. Also, please pray that their small group leaders are exponentially duplicated as they strive to live out their faith. Thank you TEBA!
