Connecting Churches to Change Our World

LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min.

During the TEBA Maine Awareness trip, I had the pleasure of visiting with a pastor who had come to the United States from the Republic of Burundi, in Africa (He could speak five languages - impressive!). In 2013 Burundi was listed as the hungriest nation in the world and one of the five poorest nations in the world. In our training class on Revitalization, he posed a question that encouraged three responses. He could not understand why the U.S., which once sent missionaries to bring the gospel to his country, now found herself in a state of decline and crisis. He asked the rest of the class for the cause of this downturn. His question impacts church health. Three answers were offered as both reasons and excuses. I would like to know how you would answer. Send me your thoughts - [email protected]. First, “Americans are distracted from what matters most.” I realize there are things that blur our focus on the Lord: 1) Busyness 2) Television 3) Sports 4) Hobbies 5) Work 6) Religion (instead of relationship) 7) Selfish pursuits 8) Seeking for what God can give, rather than Who He is 9) Social media. What can we do to refocus? Second, was apathy. One class member said, “People just don’t care about the things of God anymore.” This seems a bit simplistic and maybe the viewpoint of a singular generation. I see a great deal of caring in the younger Christian generation. They just want their life to make a difference. The third was irrelevance. Relevance is defined as “practical, social, spiritual, political… applicability.” Are we using the Word of God to answer the questions of our present generation? Do we know what questions are being asked? Are we offering relevant solutions to today’s needs? The one thing that convicted every American in the room was when he said, “You separate your family life, church life and personal life. We do not. Everybody in my life: my wife, my kids and my church ARE ALL FAMILY.” Could our right of privacy be keeping us from OUR family?

Distractions, Apathy or Irrelevance? by Tracy Jaggers, D.Min.

Hispanic Churches Iglesia Bautista Getsemani celebrated their 7th Anniversary. They have demonstrated their missionary commitment, not only in reaching the lost and raising up leaders; two former members are now pastors. They also have helped Principe de Paz get started with offerings and volunteers, provided the pastor (Eduardo Serrato). They have given monthly support and counsel to La Gran Comisión Conroe (Pastor Jose Melgar), and Iglesia Bautista Esperanza Ardiente (Pastor Pablo Palma). They have worked with Pastor Jose Chacón in a preaching point and now as he is pastor of Iglesia Bautista Emanuel. Primera Iglesia Bautista Milagro de Dios, Splendora, (Pastor Pablo Lopez) recently purchased land on which to build. They plan to formally constitute soon. First Baptist Church Splendora is the sponsor (Pastor Bob Grayson). Iglesia Bautista Emanuel had an installation service for their new pastor, Rev. Jose Chacon, on January 10. Pastor Eliakin Urbina preached. Special prayer for Jose and Madelena was led by Pastor Mario Bernal, Sr., and Pastor Eduardo Serrato. The Hispanic Pastors Fellowship of TEBA elected Mario Bernal, Sr., as President for 2015. Saul Hernandez, Iglesia Bautista Semillas de Mostaza Porter, was elected Secretary/Treasurer. Meetings are held at 5 pm, the first Saturday each month. Filipino Two different leaders are in the early stage in getting to know the community and needs of the significant and growing Filipino population. Lisa Bowen is the key person on the Highway 59 corridor; Liezel Moen is leading on the I-45 corridor. The TEBA Missions Team has formed a Filipino Advisor group to encourage these efforts. Darrel Seale, Kay Robinson, and Scott Young will work with them. One goal is that the two ministries would learn from each other. Filipino residents include skilled medical professionals as well as Filipino-American families. CP Training Five couples attended Basic Training Weekend. The results will be seen in renewed churches and in new church starts in the near future. Three Hispanic pastors attended Entrenamiento Basico Para Iniciadores de Iglesias (Basic Training for Church Planters) over an 8 week period. All are currently involved in new church starts. A modified training: Pillars and Priorities in Church Planting was done as part of the partnership with Maine Baptist Convention. Twenty-two participants attended the 5 hour training at Brunswick, Maine. Another team trained nine ESL teachers at Lewiston, Maine. Connie Anthony led the training assisted by C. L. Pickle.

Church Planting and Ethnic Report by Stewart Pickle, D.Min.

Pastor Jose Chacon at Iglesia Bautista Emanuel

My coffee cup broke. It was resting in my hand when the handle gently separated and fell off. I had been having coffee each morning from a cup from that same set since the day we said “I Do” 32 years ago. When we moved to our first house they came with us. When we moved to our second house we were pleased to see they matched the border in the kitchen. When we moved to serve in the TEBA the decision was discussed with one of those cups in front of me and now the set was coming to the end of its usefulness. I told my wife I thought I could glue the handle back on; she suggested it was time to get different cups. For a guy who is open to new things I found I was strangely resistant to giving up that set of cups. This cup fit my hand, it was a welcome sight in the morning and it was just the right diameter to keep the coffee hot while allowing it to cool slowly as I drank. It was familiar. And for a moment I forgot the purpose of the cup. That what really mattered was not the cup but the purpose of the cup. That the cup was made to hold a hot drink but the cup itself never produced coffee on its own – it was a vessel that carried what mattered – the cup ultimately did not matter. Come to think of it, I don’t ever recall ever feeling the need to carry around an empty cup. If I carried a cup it was because of what the cup carried within it – if it was empty, I carried it to fill it back up. If we aren’t careful we can forget that what matters in our churches is the message we carry and not the cups we carry them in. We can get enamored with the familiar or find security in the predictable instead of embracing the reality that what ultimately matters is the message we carry – never the cup we carry it in. We can lose our focus and in so doing we can find ourselves ending up like the Vikings. Recently I read an excerpt from Tim Suttle’s book, Shrink, which recounted “A thousand years ago, a group of Vikings led by Erik the Red set sail from Norway for the vast Arctic landmass known today as Greenland. It was largely an uninhabitable island. The Norse colonies in Greenland were law-abiding, economically viable, fully integrated communities, numbering at their peak 5,000 people. They lasted for 450 years—and then they vanished. We think of Vikings as seafaring raiders. They thought of themselves as farmers and ranchers. Owning and eating cattle was a status symbol. After Greenland was deforested for homes or pastureland and the fertile but thin soil was grazed into oblivion, Greenland's wind and water began to carry away the topsoil, and the Norse people began to starve.

Fishing would have been a simple and effective way to feed themselves. Yet all archaeological evidence suggests that the Norse would rather starve than eat a fish. Why would a society that was sitting on top of the richest food source the ocean has to offer nearly starve to death? In his book Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, Jared Diamond argues that when societies fail, it is typically due not to some cataclysmic event but to something much simpler. Societies fail because they turn inward, perpetuate their cultural model at all costs, and merely try to hold on and survive. And that's exactly what happened to the Vikings in Greenland. They had a cultural taboo against eating fish. It simply wasn't done. So when archeologists looked through the ruins of the Western Settlement, they found animal bones left in the debris, they found the bones of newborn calves, meaning that the Norse, in that final winter, had given up on the future. They found toe bones from

cows, equal to the number of cow spaces in the barn, meaning that the Norse ate their cattle down to the hoofs, and they found the bones of dogs covered with knife marks, meaning that, in the end, they had to eat their pets. But not fish bones, of course. Right up until they starved to death, the Norse never lost sight of what they stood for.” Or what was familiar to them. I wonder how many churches have chosen to stay with what’s familiar and safe instead of doing what’s necessary to move forward, gain health, and become strong again. It may be that we have to be willing to look at a new set of cups to carry the timeless message of the cross to a generation that’s looking to drink from something that may be more familiar to them than to some of us. In Kingdom service,

FISH
