God has a sense of humor. He uses broken people to heal other broken people. He uses people who had to be reconciled to reconcile others in Jesus’s name. One of the tools we use is sometimes a hindrance to equipping Christians to connect cross-culturally. That is using good materials in discipling people assuming that completing a 4 week course is really equipping people to become disciples who are sensitive to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Materials, even the best materials, do NOT make disciples; disciples make disciples. Becoming a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ must be caught as well as taught. Getting a certificate doesn’t count. Jesus did cross the cultural barriers. Practicing everything He taught means we do also. Understand that you have more in common with a Hispanic or Korean believer than you do with your neighbor who has not been born again. If you would reach that neighbor or relative, you will work cross-culturally. So how do you reach someone who has a different vocabulary and world-view? It starts with prayer. God is already at work in them, He needs to prepare your heart and mind to connect. This change starts in you as an individual, not in a committee or a ministry. As God works in your life, He brings materials and training to life in you so as to connect skill to head knowledge. His preparation will include “cultural dislocation”—seeing the shared world from God’s viewpoint so that we begin to understand the seriousness of the “lostness” of our neighbor or relative. He will then bring us to a sense of inability (Romans 7 à 8). I am powerless, but it is not about me but about His Spirit. The concern grows, so that I decide that whatever God must do in my life is worth it, if I can present Christ effectively (Galatians 2:20—I die daily). When we reach that point in our lives, God will give you that lost friend. Keep building from initial contact, invest your time and prayer in that one, and then begin to invite them to activities that move them toward Christ. Be patient and persistent. Keep trusting God to bring the results in His time and theirs. He is faithful who called you; He will do what He promised when He put that person in your mind and heart.

Connecting Churches to Change Our World

Shannon Brown who has served the TEBA since 2007 will be concluding her time with us in June and will be moving into a fulltime counseling role. During her time with the Association she has been a Ministry Assistant and Financial Secretary. Most of all she has been a highly effective team member and source of help and encouragement to the churches of the TEBA.

Shannon will be finalizing her PhD in Counseling this year. She has been an effective counselor who has helped a number of clients both inside and out of our member churches. In reflecting on her time with the TEBA Shannon shared… What a blessing it has been to serve here at TEBA and all the member churches, pastors, and staff. God has called me into a new

season. I am transitioning out of my position here and moving into a full time counseling practice. The vision is a Christian counseling center, which opens this month, and within the next two years adding a residential facility for the treatment of trauma and family reunification. I would love and appreciate your prayers that our program would see a great harvest of people changed

by Christ through our program. Thankfully our office is just down the street from TEBA – Refuge Trauma & Counseling Center – so I can continue to be of service in the Association.

I want to thank you all for your kindness and love for me during my time in the office.

We are grateful for Shannon’s work and know that you appreciate the many efforts she has made on behalf of the member churches of the TEBA.
