Cable conversion: Imperial to metric
Welcome to the 3rd edition of the Technical Bulletin presented by Actemium ICS Gloucester.
In this edition, we will consider the imperial and metric cable sizes.
What is the difference?
The AWG, or the American Wire Gauge, is a logarithmic stepped standard primarily used in America to measure the conducting wires using circular mil (kcmil) as a unit of measurement.
In Europe and other parts of the world, the standard used to measure the conducting wires is expressed in a cross-

sectional area in squared millimetre (mm2) and additionally, the amount of strand of wires in the diameter expressed in mm2.
A conversion table from AWG/kcmil to mm2 and vice versa can be found on the second page.
