Planting on Slopes

As San Diego is naturally a hilly area, much of recent development has been based on lots that are cut out of a hillside and graded to provide a flat space for building. Often, the back yard slopes up to the next flat pad of homes on the next residential street.

This configuration leads to some unique challenges. The first issue is topsoil. And the second is what to plant. This can be exacerbated by issues of erosion control and the need for terracing, access and irrigation requirements.

Fortunately, California natives are able to root and flourish in soil conditions that would make a gardener on the East Coast very nervous. But you still need to assess the soil that remains and determine the best plant materials.

The list presented here is a starting point for your analysis. Adjust to your particular needs and increase or decrease plant materials accordingly.
