Internet Statistics In Germany

•Germany has the 6th highest number of internet users at 65,125,000 ▫This number accounts for 79.9% of the

population (81,471,834) and 3.1% of the worldwide users

▫In 2000 Germany only had 24,000,000 internet users

▫Worldwide there are 2,110,765,810 which only accounts for 30.5% of the total population

X-ray• On December 28, 1895, Wilhelm

Rontgen published a paper on a major discovery. The X Ray was invented by Germany scientists who examined cathode rays in 1875. Those scientists were Philip Lennard, Wilhelm Rontgen and Johann Hittorf. Mr. Rontgen is a physics professor who lived in Germany. He used Crookes tubes to study the electromagnetic rays. Crookes tubes are known to generate electrons to create x-rays by ionization of air. He named the ray as X because it is still unknown.

Jet Engine• Hans von Ohain obtained his patent on the jet

engine in 1936 • He was responsible for the first jet fighter

▫Heinkel He 118 ▫After WWII he moved to America

• Under his supervision the technology for VTOL aircraft was designed ▫Harrier ▫JSF-35

Harrier JSF-35

MP3• Invented by the

Fraunhofer Reaserch institue in 1993

• It is a form of file encoding ▫ Using lossy data

compression to minimize the size of the files

• It was a collaborative effort by several different organizations and is still being improved everyday

• Currently considered the Standard audio file

LCD Technology

•LCD technology was first discovered in 1888 by Friedrich Reinitzer

•It was later improved by Otto Lehmann which led to the development of simple LCD displays

•This technology has slowly progressed into the modern LCD TVs we have today

Radar• Christian Huelsmeyer

discovered that radio waves could be bounced off of metallic objects in 1904 ▫ He called this device the

telemobiloscope▫ Which was later

improved into what we know today as RADAR Radio Detection and

Ranging▫ He used the writings of

Heinrich Hertz to help him discover radar

Catscan• Godfrey Hounsfield built the

first CT scan machine in 1970 and it was first used in medical practice in 1971▫ CT stands for Computed

Tomography ▫ It views the object in slices

and creates a 3d image • In 1975 the first full body

scanner was built• CT scans are very widely

used with 72 million scans in the US in 2007

• CT scans use X-rays where MRIs use magnetic feilds

Programmable Binary Computer• Konrad Zuse created the

first programable binary computer in 1938▫ He called is the Z1 and

had about the same computing power of a simple pocket calculator

• Between 1938 and 1950 he developed 3 more computers Z2, Z3, Z4

• The computers were massive and required 4 people to assemble it

• Zuse also created software to help guide bombs

Auto Technology• Germany has always been a

pioneer in auto technology• The first gasoline powered

auto was built in 1889• Rudolf Diesel created the

diesel engine in 1893 and it still widely used today

• Germany has also been pioneers in car safety ▫ Accident avoidance

systems ▫ Adaptive cruise control ▫ Laminated glass▫ 3 point safety belt
