Perdido BayA Gulf Coast Traditionby Joey Johnson

Perdido Bay Golf Course has long been considered one of the premier golf facili-ties in the southeast. The course hosted the Pensacola Open from 1978 through 1987 and has played host to golf legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Kite, Payne Stewart and Curtis Strange.

Known as a “shot-makers” course, Per-dido Bay offers an excellent blend of challenging and fun golf. Water comes into play on 14 holes, but few of them require a forced carry. From the back tees, even the best golfers will need to be on their game to tame the 7,072- yard course. Four tee box options, however, allow golfers of all skill levels the oppor-tunity to find the right challenge.

Originally designed as a heavily treed parkland style course by Bill Amick, Perdido Bay underwent a remodel by Bill Bergin in 2000. The transformation (with some assistance from a couple of hurricanes) resulted in a much more open and visually appealing property befitting a course on the Florida Gulf Coast. The lakes provide a natural habitat for turtles and even a few alligators, so enjoy some of the area’s wildlife while making a few birdies.

The greens are TifEagle and are known to be some of the best in the area. They vary from relatively tame, to moderately sloping, to multi-tiered, so just like the course itself, the putting surfaces offer a unique and challenging experience on every hole.

Head Golf Professional Dan Swomley singles out number 3 as a particularly challenging hole. The long par four with water on the right measures 438 yards from the back tees. A pair of bun-kers split the fairway and only the very longest of hitters has a chance of carry-ing them. That leaves the player with a choice to play safely to the left side of the fairway and away from the water or taking a more daring (and shorter) route down the right hand side.

The hole offers a risk-reward option and makes for a good “signature” hole at a golf course where you will be challenged, but not overwhelmed. Quality golf shots will be rewarded. Just make sure you do your part by not biting off more than you can chew.

Dan Swomley is a PGA of America Member and has been at Perdido Bay for four years. He is a life-long golfer and enjoyed playing junior and high school golf in his native Iowa before attend-ing and playing golf at the University of South Alabama from 2004-2008.

Swomley and Assistant Professionals Phil Lalas and Ryan Carrico offer golf

The Alabama men’s golf team won the pro-gram’s first National Championship on June 2nd with a 4-1 victory over the University of Illinois. The finals of the 2013 NCAA Golf Championship was played on the par-70, 7,319-yard Crabapple Course at the Capital City Club in Atlanta.

Just a year ago, the Crimson Tide fell short in the match play finals against the Univer-sity of Texas at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. The victory was sweet redemption for the Alabama program which has seen a steady rise under 11th year Head Coach Jay Sewell.

“I think (what happened last year) makes it more special,” Seawell said when asked about last year’s loss. “It makes you appreci-ate it a great deal more. It is so hard to even get here. This team has been on a mission, a mission, a mission. That is the leadership of Scott Strohmeyer and all of the guys on this team. It is their championships and we won today because of them.”

Junior Bobby Wyatt, from Mobile, got the Crimson Tide out to an early lead with a great front nine. Wyatt made five front-nine bird-ies and won the first seven holes of his match giving him a 6-up lead at the turn. He chipped in for birdie on number 13 to close out the

match, and the route was on.

The Tide coaches had an early sense that things would go well. “Bobby on the driving range, I don’t think Tiger Woods would have wanted him when I watched him warm up,” Seawell said. “(Assistant coach Rob Bradley) came up to me and said, ‘I wouldn’t want to play him today.”

Alabama’s Cory Whitsett was almost as hot as Wyatt. Whitsett, playing in the final match of the day was 5-up at the turn and coasted home with a 4 & 3 victory.

That meant only one of the 3 remaining matches needed to go Bama’s way.

Senior caption Scott Strohmeyer and Trey Mullinax took care of business and the title was headed to Tuscaloosa. Justin Thomas was one down on the final hole, but conceded the irrelevant point in order to celebrate with his teammates.

The future is very bright for a program los-ing only one player to graduation. For now, these young guns will turn their attention to some of the nation’s big-time summer ama-teur events. Don’t be surprised to see a few of them battling it out on the PGA Tour rela-tively soon, however.

The National Championship is the first for a men’s sports program other than football in Alabama history. In the last 2 school years, the University of Alabama has won 6 Nation-al Championships in 5 different sports.

lessons to all skill levels and enjoy work-ing with both adults and junior players.

Perdido Bay offers memberships, but it is also a public-friendly facility so make plans to take your group out for a great ex-perience. If you’re looking for a game, the course offers Men’s and Women’s Leagues as well as Junior Camps.

One program that Swomley is particu-larly excited about is the PGA Junior League that Perdido Bay will be hosting this summer. The program is eligible for boys and girls 13 years old and under and will bring a “Little League Baseball” ap-proach to golf. Each participant will re-ceive golf, instruction, range balls and a team jersey. The league will also involve teams from Stonebrook, Tiger Point and Cypress Lakes golf courses. The program costs just $100.00 and will include 9-hole matches every Saturday in June and July.

If you’re looking for a “stay and play” experience, The Cottages on the Green is an on-site facility offering a number of dif-ferent lodging options. Packages include one night stays, weeklong vacations, and even extended stay options. The cottages can accommodate up to 16 people in one unit or up to 70 in multiple units if you have a large group.

Whether you’re just looking for a fun round for a day or if a golf vacation is more your style, consider Perdido Bay Golf Course. You’ll be glad you did!

Making the Most of Your Practice TimeBy Rea Schuessler, PGA Professional We all want to improve and in order to do that we must be honest and understand what our strengths and weaknesses are and develop a specific plan to get better. If you are a beginner I encourage you to learn the proper fundamentals and I encourage all golfers to monitor their fundamentals so they do not fall back into bad habits. Most PGA Tour players know their statistics so they can get the most out of their practice time. It is very helpful when playing a round to keep statistics so you can have a true snapshot of what to improve. Sometimes what we feel we need to work on and what actually is costing us shots are not in line. Chart your statistics in a notebook divided by categories such as the ones below and you will soon know where to spend the majority of your practice time. You can customize your own and the more details the better. Go to PGATour.com and click on stats and you can see all of the categories available from the tour.

Fairways Hit:Greens in Regulation: Wedge – 7 iron:6 iron – Fairway Woods:Wedge Play: Break this down to categories of:Full Wedge Shots – Average Proximity to HolePartial Wedge Shots – Average Proximity to HoleChip and Pitch Shots from Around the Green with all Clubs – Proximity to Hole.Sand Play – Proximity to HolePutting 5 feet and under – Conversion rate. 5-10 feet – Conversion rate10-20 feet – Conversion rate20 plus – Proximity to hole plus chart two putt / three putt ratio. After 4-6 rounds you should start to see trends and where your strengths and weaknesses are relative to your handicap. Talk to your coach if you have one and develop a plan. It is a fact that during a round of golf that 60% - 70% of all golf shots are played from 125 yards and in so always keep that in mind. What I encourage my golfers to do is create small goals every day they get a chance to practice [Examples below]. The reason is that when you finish you have accomplished something. Also in every round of golf you have certain putts, chips or full shot’s that keeps the round together and accomplishing these goals will give you the confidence to get through those moments in the round. A. Make 10 putts in a row from 3 - 5 feet.B. When chipping or pitching, find 3 locations from easy to hard. Try get at least 7 out of 10 in a 3 foot circle from each location.C. Long game – With the club you are practicing visualize a specific shot on the course that gives you trouble and successfully hit three shots in a row. I hope this helps! Good luck and Let’s Play Better!

Getting the Mix or Getting Mixed Up...How to Choose the Right Golf Ball for Your Gameby Bobby Hall, PGA Professional

I set upon the task of informing golfers about an everyday golf shop question:

“Which ball should I play”?

My general PGA Professional response:

“What are your swing speeds with your irons?”

Then I go forward from there trying to help ascertain the best selection for my customer.

As a golf shop manager and buyer, there are too many competitors with too many golf balls to choose from and too much confusion accompanied with a lot of marketing, TV hype, and glamour. But, that is today’s world of marketing.

So lets jump in and swim around in it. Put aside all your mixed emotions about your fa-vorite PGA and LPGA Tour player. Decide just what makes you tick at the retail coun-ter when picking your favorite little friend that half the time ends up drowning on that hole that you hate the most at your favorite course!

Safest bet for the retailer? Stock up with whatever the “big boys” are selling. Namely, brand recognized golf companies that are synonymous on TV, print advertising and backed by all of the “world” golf tours.

Safest bet for the consumer? Buy a name brand golf ball so your buddies identify that you might know something about your game! Your cart path damaged Pro V1 water ball that you found last weekend is great for back up, but you still want that shiny fresh, right out of the box surlyn covered, dual core, urethane, elastomer, ex-oflex, 382 dimple, 6 piece high octane, wind cheater that finds the freakin’ fairway!

I found a great golf ball comparison chart on Golf Galaxy web site that I highly recom-mend for further confusion to the subject. Nowhere on the “Chart” does it mention if a product is either 70-80 compression: or 80-90 compression: or 90-100 compression. But at the end of the attorney drawn document, it refers to knowing the right compression for your game! It does contain great information! I had to change out my contacts to finish the entire chart, but I made it!

Three categories advise your “most wise” decision for your next purchase:

1. Tour Performance golf balls are a per-fect match for the golfer who demands opti-mal performance and has the pocket book to match! (MSRP: $50-$62 Doz.)

2. Premium Performance golf balls offer popular technology for slightly slower swing speeds, enhanced for distance, spin, soft feel, and multi-layer construction. (Most Popular). (MSRP: $35-$50 Doz.)

3. Value Performance golf balls to com-pliment average to low swing speeds, those learning the game, and our young junior play-ers. Perfect for the golfer who wants a little more bang for their buck. (Look for the huge stack next to the telescopic water retrieval systems). (MSRP: $15-$35 Doz.)

I was really impressed by the Titleist web

Get the Scoop on Wedges.......For the average golfer, 60% of strokes taken occur with 100 yards of the hole. We’ve all heard “drive for show, putt for dough”, but having a strong wedge game will not only save strokes, but help you make more putts! It’s pretty simple...if you hit your wedge closer to the hole, more putts will drop. Practicing your wedge game is a must, but choosing the right equipment is the place to start. Most players should carry at least 3 wedges (Pitching Wedge, Sand Wedge and either a Lob Wedge or Gap Wedge) and possibly all four. Loft obviously distinguishes one type of wedge from another. But what about bounce? Essentially, bounce is the angle of the sole relative to the ground. The greater the angle, the higher the bounce. Typically, low bounce wedges perform bet-ter in firm conditions and higher bounce wedges are better suited for softer courses.Your angle of attack, though, is most important. After all, you take your swing with you wherever you go. If you tend to “dig” or make a pronounced de-scending blow, then a higher bounce wedge is probably the right fit.Players who take more shallow divots should consider wedges with lower bounce.Wedge bounce options typically range from 4 to 12 degrees, although addi-tional options do exist. Make sure you find the right wedges to fit your game and the course you play most often. As always, consult with your local PGA Professional for assistance on all parts of your game!

Joe Pomeroy has been around golf all of his life. He is the son of PGA Life Member and Pro Emeritus at Marriott’s Grand Ho-tel, the late Mr. Ewing Pomeroy. Under his father’s direction, Joe began playing golf at the age of seven at Ansley G.C. in Atlanta, Georgia. Joe played high school golf for Grady High School while living in Atlanta.

The Pomeroy family moved to Fairhope, Alabama in 1960 when Ewing accepted the job as Director of Golf and Head Golf Pro-fessional at the Grand Hotel. Joe finished his high school golf in Fairhope and after high school attended the University of Ala-bama for two years.

Joe next enlisted in the U.S. Army for six years and was stationed in Ft. Sam Hous-ton, Texas as well as Ft. Benning, Georgia. After serving his country, Joe returned to Fairhope and joined his father on the staff at Marriott’s Grand Hotel where he served as Assistant Professional and then Head Golf Professional.

In all, Joe’s tenure at the Grand Hotel last-ed from 1967 until 1982 when he became the first Assistant Professional under Woody Woodall at the Country Club of Mobile. While a Member of the PGA of America, Joe served as Secretary, Vice President and President of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the Dixie Section of the PGA. Joe was named Golf Professional of the Year in the Gulf Coast Chapter in 1975 and 1977.

In 1986, Joe took down his PGA shingle

and began a career working as an indepen-dent insurance agent. Today, Joe is a Proj-ect Manager for Thomas Roofing Company and continues to live in Fairhope with his wife of 47 years, Renee (Gibbs) Pomeroy.

Throughout the years, golf has remained an important part of Joe’s life. He was elected as the first President of the Quail Creek Men’s Golf Association in 1996 and has continued to be an active and integral part of the golf fraternity at Quail Creek and throughout the area. Joe won the Quail Creek Club Championship in 1989 and again in 2001.

Joe and Renee have two sons and three grandchildren who all live in the Birming-ham area.

Joe’s favorite foursome would include his three brothers (Billy, Bob and Dick) with his sons caddying. His favorite all-time four-some would include his father, Ewing and golf legends Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus.

Brandt Snedeker is one of his favorites of the current crop of PGA stars.

When not working, spending time with his family and playing golf, Joe enjoys land-scaping his yard and watching Alabama Football. He’s always a joy to play a round of golf with, but you might have a hard time beating him. Joe maintains a four handi-cap, so you might need to ask for strokes!

site, which mostly alludes to going through a series of ball testing chronicles and divot jarring practice sessions on the course, which the golf course superintendent will hate! But the evidence, Titleist indicates, is that feel of compression outways your swing speed! If it feels good… buy it!

Titleist highly recommends getting the right “feel” from your short shots to improve your game. Try each of their brands until you have the product you want to match your game. Time consuming yes, but if you chart your results you will be better-informed buyer. (I recommend the purchase of “flex tape” band-aid’s before you start.)

Data on the Titleist site shows the most in-teresting facts based on the following scores by players who might shoot the following:

Percentages of shots made during a round:

70 85 100Drives 20% 16% 14%

Shots To Green 42% 40% 38%Putts 37% 43% 48%

Conclusion..........“WORK ON YOUR SHORT GAME”!

My research crossed the paths of spin rates, rates of compression, ball speeds, Trac Man data, and common myths about ball fitting. ionomer covers, urethanes, surlyn, iothane, trionomer, dual core, soft core, thin layers, 4-

piece, 5-piece and yes a 6-piece ball by Max-fli! Not pronounced Maxiefli!

Do you like a yellow ball? How about lime green, tangerine, mango or my favorite,,, fus-chia! Price, feel, distance and don’t forget the dimple count and the dimple construction! Hexagon or Dihedral shape are enough to ruin the edge of a perfectly good sharpie!

A favorite story is to reiterate Mr. Dave Brannon, former CEO of Slazenger Golf. A lady came up to him and said:

“Oh’ Mr. Brannon, I just love my Slazenger golf ball. I always take out an old range ball when I come up to a water hazard and save my Slazenger from being lost so I can use it again and again!”

Mr. Brannon commented back with,“I don’t want to hear that! Fire that puppy into that hazard and go buy another one.”

I agree! Go buy another one and keep the golf world economic system flowing. It saves on my range budget and your invest-ment into golf will help create another plastic our future golfers can compress.

By the way…“What was your swing speed again?”

See you at the Golf Shop!

Cigars and Golf.....Match Play Made in Heaven!by Gene Bouchillon Alfred de Musset said, “Any cigar smoker is a friend because I know how he feels.” And, the same can be said for golfers. Possibly, a cigar smoker who is also a golfer is the ulti-mate companion on the golf course. A golf course is one of the last remaining venues where friends can become one with a cigar and with the beautiful game of golf.

I am Gene “Bouch” Bouchillon, owner of Bouch’s Premium Cigars, a new retail premi-um cigar store located in historic Fairhope, Alabama. Last fall my wife of 36 years strongly suggested, “Either open the damn cigar store or shut-up about it.” With her ob-vious blessing, I am now living one of my dreams as a purveyor of premium cigars. Randy Burgan and Joey Johnson, owners and publishers of “Tee Time on the Gulf Coast”, generously invited me to contribute an article to their new magazine that speaks to the mar-riage of cigars and golf. In my article I will address three topics: suggested cigars for the golf course, cigars and golf etiquette, and a featured Gulf Coast located premium cigars store for your consideration.

In the last issue, I discussed the benefits of choosing a larger gauge and a longer cigar for your golf game. A cigar’s girth is measured in 1/64th of an inch; therefore, a 60 gauge or

ring-size cigar is 60/64th of an inch. A larg-er gauge cigar holds its light longer than a smaller one and smokes cooler than a small-er gauge cigar. Golf is challenging enough without having to continuously relight one’s cigar. My first cigar suggestion for your round of golf is “Cigar Aficionado’s” #1 Best Cigar of the World for 2012, Don Jose “Pepin” Garcia’s Flor de las Antillas Toro, a Nicaraguan puro. A puro cigar is a cigar with its filler, binder, and wrapper all from the same country. This cigar is a soft box-pressed stick with an interplay of notes of white pepper, nutmeg, and lavender flavors. Its soft roll gives it an easy and excellent draw and its construction is beautiful giving it a nice ash as you smoke it. Garcia’s new company is called My Father Cigars. This cigar also comes in a larger Gran Toro size. My second selection for this issue is the new and flavorful Romeo by Romeo y Julieta Pi-ramide, “Cigar Aficionado’s” #3 Best Cigar for 2012. This medium-bodied smoke is an earthy, complex torpedo with a lush draw that layers the palate with impressions of cocoa beans, hazelnut, and black pepper. Simply stated, the best and most flavorful Romeo y Julieta I have ever smoked.

Cigars and golf etiquette…one of the great-est riddles for a cigar smoking golfer; where the heck do I put my cigar while swinging my club? There are many available “gadgets” on the market that try to solve this riddle. In this article I will give you a solution to this ques-tion…the XIKAR ashtray can for your golf cart and your automobile. This ashtray can fits perfectly in your golf cart’s and auto’s cup holder. Inside the ashtray can are a ring and a spiral cigar holder which accommodate many cigar sizes and a lid for the can for clos-ing it when not in use.

Additionally, before leaving your golf cart and as you are collecting your other golf-ing necessities, i.e., golf balls, tees, and beer cans, etc., you most likely will remember to grab your XIKAR ashtray can from its cup holder. And that’s not all; XIKAR provides an unconditional lifetime warranty on all of their products. XIKAR ashtray cans can be found in your local cigar shops.

My featured cigar stop of this issue is The Cigar Shop of Biloxi, located at 2611 Pass Road, Biloxi, MS 39531. Paul Bertucci, a na-tive of the MS Gulf Coast, is the owner of the shop and it is managed by Mike Mando who is assisted by Roger Sikora and other associ-ates. The shop’s phone # is 228.273.3230. Not only does the shop have a broad selection of premium cigars in its two humidors, but it also has an extensive and beautiful lounge area where you can enjoy smoking the tobac-co leaves. The Cigar Shop has a Customer Appreciation Day each Friday where cold adult beverages and food are served. One of the important customer segments for The Ci-gar Shop is our military heroes stationed in the Biloxi and Gulfport areas. If you are ever on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, stop by and check out The Cigar Shop.

Smoke in Peace!

Peach Cobbler Good Day to all my food loving golfers!!

I don’t know about you but when the month of June comes around each year a couple of different images and thoughts pop into my head. First, school is out and I look forward to spending late afternoons taking my son Jackson to the golf course as I have such fond memories of those days my father and I spent doing the exact same thing when I was a kid. Secondly, The U.S Open! This year at Storied Merion Golf Club in good old PA. And last but not least is PEACH COBBLER!!!! Late May and the month of June produce a bountiful crop along the coast (and of course Chilton County Georgia) of these wonderful naturally sweet gifts from God. They are readily available in just about every fresh produce market and farmers mar-ket. After many, many years of consuming and cooking this dish, here is my take on the delicious Peach Cobbler. Yield: 10 Servings Ingredients: ½ cup unsalted melted butter 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 cups sugar, divided 1 tablespoon baking powder Pinch of salt 1 cup Buttermilk (you can use regular milk, almond milk, or soy milk if that is your deal) 4 cups FRESH peach slices 1 tablespoon lemon juice (the little yellow bottle is just fine to use here) ½ tablespoon Ground Cinnamon or nutmeg (this is optional but I would definitely use it)

Enjoy, Your Golfing Chef Danny Spybey

Preparation:Preheat Oven to 375 degreesPour Melted butter into 13 X 9-inch baking dishCombine flour, 1 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix dry ingredients. Add buttermilk to dry ingredients and combine until dry ingredients are moistened. Pour batter into buttered baking dish. DO NOT STIR!In saucepot combine 1 cup of sugar, peach slices and lemon juice. Bring to a boil over high heat while stirring constantly.Pour hot mixture over batter and sprinkle with cinnamon.Bake at 375 for about 45 minutes or until golden brown. Let sit at room temperature until just warm and serve with some good old-fashioned Vanilla Ice Cream.
