Spring Hill Golf Course, originally opened in 1930, is Mobile’s oldest pub-lic golf course. Located on the campus of Spring Hill College in the heart of Mobile, the 18-hole, Par 72 course is easily accessible just off Interstate 65. More importantly, a great day of golf awaits you once you arrive.

Spring Hill Golf Course offers a clas-sic layout featuring elevation changes throughout, generous immaculate fair-ways, and large undulating greens. The course underwent a complete renovation in 2009 and the fairways and greens are in excellent condition. Offering afford-able rates both during the week and on the weekend, Spring Hill Golf Course is truly one of the best golf values on the Gulf Coast.

With four different sets of tees and a maximum yardage of 6,700 yards, Spring Hill Golf Course offers an enjoy-able round of golf for players of all skill levels.

Spring Hill Golf Course offers afford-able tournament events with profession-al services and comfortable facilities to accommodate groups of any size.

PGA Professional and Spring Hill La-dies Golf Coach Shane Allen is available for individual or group golf instruction. Shane is an excellent instructor, a lover of the game of golf, and an all-around great guy. Read more about Shane in

Randy Burgan’s “Get to Know” feature on page 19.

Shane’s favorite hole at Spring Hill Golf Course is number seven. The downhill, left to right dogleg par 5 is a “risk-reward” hole for the longer hit-ter. A drive down the right hand side shortens the hole, potentially giving the player the chance the carry the canal in front of the green and reaching the hole in two shots.

Often considered the “signature hole”, number sixteen offers a dramatic view and a great test for the golfer. The teeing area is perched well above the landing area. A well-struck tee shot will seem to hang out over the horizon before drop-ping to the fairway below. Just a short iron will be required for the approach shot, which is situated above the golfer and across a narrow creek fronting the green. An angled, undulating green of-fers the final challenge. Scores from birdies to others are definitely possible here.

In addition to excellent daily rates, Spring Hill Golf Course offers some of the most affordable membership pack-

Golf is Too Hard!......What ????

by Rea Schuessler, PGA Professional

One of the most frustrating and repeti-tive comments I have been hearing late-ly by all in the Golf Industry ( PGA of America and Golf Channel to name a few) is “ Golf is Too Hard “. Well un-less I am mistaken the challenges of the game have not changed in a long time. So that begs the question why is it all of a sudden too difficult now?

The game attracts who it attracts and is not for everyone. The almost certain lack of instant gratification does not go along well with a society that is now used to having everything at their fin-gertips. The reason for this “Golf is Too Hard” campaign is the business of golf is not healthy at the moment because of several issues.

The main reason is there were too many golf courses built in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. It seemed they were popping up on every street corner. The manufac-turers pump out new clubs every 3 - 6 months and expect everyone to buy the “newest and best”. This has put a ton of pressure on the industry as a whole. The “Game of Golf” itself is wonderful for those that will embrace the wonderful challenge of this great sport.

In my 25 plus years of being in the busi-ness of golf and coaching golf I have experienced two types of golfers. The recreational golfer and the competitive golfer. If you fall in the recreational cat-egory enjoy the game for what it is and be realistic on your time commitment

relative to the ups and downs of the game and have fun.

If you seek to get better develop a plan with a PGA Coach with a proven track record and stick to it. Be realistic and do not expect instant improvement although at times depending on your issues you could see improvement very soon. Take accountability and as Hogan said so beautifully “dig it out of the dirt”.

If you are not improving then sit down with your PGA Coach and talk through the different components of your game. Sometimes the Coach/Student relation-ship just does not work out. For what-ever reason it was just not the right fit as they say. Tiger Woods just fired Sean Foley and then that very week Sean Foley’s own Hunter Mahan wins. The Coach/Student relationship is a two way street so try to find a Coach that you can communicate and improve with and you will have a wonderful journey in this Great Game of a Lifetime!

Hello all my Golfing Foodies!Down……. Set, Omaha…Omaha…Wing right…Wing Left…Hut 1, Hut 2.

Ok so we all know this is a golf magazine but I just can’t help myself. I love football!! And not a day goes by from August 31st to January 15th that most of us here along the Gulf Coast don’t get geared every Saturday for a little pig skin happiness. Now if I could just figure out how to play golf at 8am and be home by 1pm before the big game every Saturday, we would really have something.

Well….now that I think about it we have several of those options at some local golf courses. More on that later in the magazine. Since the Fed Ex Cup is now complete and we can concentrate on football and food, let’s get down to one of my favorite culinary creations. That’s right! The almighty chicken wing. I have always been a fan of the Original Hot Wing with the old standby Blue Cheese dip or Ranch dip. But sometimes the palate needs a little more sophistication. Here is a recipe that I have used often and it always brings a smile to the face of myself and my guests.

sure to spray the foil with Pam (you will thank me later). Put pans in oven and preheat oven to 500°F. Pat wings dry ( very important ) then toss with oil, salt, and pepper in a large bowl and divide between preheated pans, spreading wings in 1 layer. Roast, without turning, until golden and tender, about 35 minutes. While wings roast, simmer vinegar, soy sauce, and honey in a 2-quart heavy saucepan, stir-ring occasionally, until reduced to about 1/2 cup, 12 to 14 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in butter until melted. Remove roasted wings from oven and let stand in pans 1 minute, then transfer with tongs to a clean large glass or stainless steel bowl. Pour balsamic mixture over wings and toss to coat well. Let stand 5 minutes, then toss again. Serve with some Grilled or Roasted Asparagus and Grilled Peppers on a large plated. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce. Remember to have plenty of napkins!!! Enjoy!!!Your Golfing Gourmet,Danny SpybeyGeneral Manager and Executive Chef Stewart – Stewart Lodges at Steelwood

Get to Know Shane Allen In this edition of “Get to Know”, I want to introduce you to a guy that is perhaps one of the funniest people you will ever meet and will always have a smile on his face. When you play a round of golf at Springhill Golf Course, get to know the Head Pro and the Lady Badgers’ Golf Coach, Mr. Shane Allen. Before coming to Springhill G.C., Shane was at Gulf Pines Golf Course for 15 years, then at Marcus Pointe for 1 year. Shane is celebrating his 3rd year at Springhill G.C. He was a standout athlete at Theodore High School, playing baseball and basketball. Shane received a baseball scholarship to Mobile College where an injury forced him to drop baseball and sign a basketball scholarship to Faulkner State Community College. Again, he was injured and decided to put the cleats and bas-ketball up for good. After making this decision, Shane thought that maybe he could take up the game of golf. He immediately became an assistant at Gulf Pines G.C. where he went through the 3 levels to become a PGA member and teaching professional. Shane has been a PGA Teaching Professional since 2005 and is, in my opinion, one of the best in our area. He is married to Dana and they have 3 children, a son, Nicklaus, and a daughter, Gracie . If you didn’t notice, his son’s name is spelled like famous golfer, Jack Nicklaus. There is a reason for the spelling. Shane is a BIG fan of golf, so when he and Dana where pregnant with their son, Shane said, “hey, we’re gonna name our son after one of the games great-est golfers”. Interesting!! Shane also has a 20 year old daughter Payton from a previous marriage. By the way, a couple of fun facts about Shane are that he grew up an Alabama fan, but was upset by the way some fans treated Coach Bill Curry during his final season at Alabama. At that point, he decided to start pulling for the Tigers of Auburn. I have known Shane for quite some time and I can tell you he loves his family, he loves golf and holy cow, loves AUBURN!!! Shane will tell you that one of the biggest influences in his life is also a great friend of Tee Time on the Gulf Coast, Mr. Ron Gring. As far as who is Shane’s favorite golfer (have you seen what Shane wears everyday? NIKE) Tiger Woods. Shane enjoys the courses here along the coast but his favorite course is Brewton Country Club. On his bucket list, he wants to play Augusta National, Pebble Beach and St. Andrews as well. The one tip that Shane will pass out to most amateur golfers is, take an extra club. He feels that most golfers always leave it short and don’t hit enough club to get to the hole. GREAT ADVICE!!! Oh, one more interesting fact about Shane is that he is a music en-thusiast. From soft romantic music to head banging rock, to rap. Yes, Rap!!! So, the next time you have the opportunity to play Springhill G.C. go in and meet the Head Pro, Mr. Shane Allen, get some golf lessons or maybe even quiz him on some of the latest music. Funny, funny guy and I am blessed to be able to call him a true friend.

Tee Time on the Gulf Coast Travel Guide: Dallas, TexasBy Randy Burgan, Radio Host and Sports Broadcaster

In the early part of August, I had the opportunity to visit with some friends in north Dallas, Tx where I played 3 very unique golf courses, Gentle Creek Golf Club, Watters Creek and TPC Craig Ranch. If you are in this area of the country, I suggest you set up a tee time at one or all of these courses. I want to walk you through each one and I’ll start with Gentle Creek Golf Club.

Gentle Creek opened in August of 2002 with a challenging D. A. Weibring design that serves as the centerpiece for Pros-per’s newest country club community. Although it is technically private, the public can play the course for the time being while they wait to fill the member-ships.

Weibring’s design tips out over 7,300 yards, and features some excruciatingly long holes. Fortunately, there are alterna-tive tees that make the course more play-able for the average hack. First timers out here should play from the 6,200 yard white tees to make the most of their day. The most spectacular hole is the

Hill Country-like par-3 No. 9, which is fronted by a huge pond, waterfall, and rock wall.

Eight sets of tees give you options here, and there is sufficient bail out room to the right, so plan accordingly on this tough mother. The ender on the back side is a nice hole as well, with a 20-acre lake spanning the entire left side. If the wind is in your face, this hole’s 560 yards is more like 660, and you’ll need three full shots to get to the bunkered green that slopes back-to-front. One design fea-ture we noticed during our round here is that Weibring eliminated greenside rough, creating good opportunities for ups-and-downs if you can at least get the approach around the green in regulation. Getting there : Located on FM 1461 be-tween Preston Rd. and FM 2478 (Custer Rd.), 1.5 miles east of Preston Rd. I re-ally enjoyed this challenge. My score 83

With a total of 33 holes, The Courses at Watters Creek offers the perfect blend of multiple courses all in one place appealing to any golfer. The Traditions course offers beautiful scenery and aes-thetics as you wind down woodlands of

Gentle Creek Golf Club

pecan, cedar elm and red oak trees. Em-brace your passion along with the breeze as it skims across the lakes that reside around the course. You’ll find these holes have multiple tees to accommodate all skill levels. They also have two putting greens and an exceptional short game fa-cility to prepare you for your day on the course. Watters Creek features premier Mini Verde Bermuda grass on the greens and luxurious Tifway 419 Bermuda on the fairways. They have designed and developed The Courses at Watters Creek with your time, needs and necessities in mind.

Don’t have time to play all 33 holes? Watters Creek offers a 12 hole “Golfer’s Dozen” that will expedite your round and get you in, out and where you need to be on time.

Their professional staff provide you the best experience in golf education, equipment, club fitting, customization, clothing and apparel. Be sure to visit the Pro Shop for all the name brands and equipment you need. The practice facil-ity is maintained with same degree of professionalism and the same attention to detail as the courses, making it one of the most recognized in the State. Make sure to eat at the signature restaurant, Grill 33. For me, this was quite a treat and really enjoyed the experience the staff at Wat-ters Creek provided. My scores 76, 81 and 82

And then there was one of the most Fabulous Courses I have ever played, TPC Craig Ranch, which continues to redefine the private golf club experience in Texas. TPC Craig Ranch is located in the Dallas suburb of McKinney, Texas, on 233 acres of breathtaking countryside within the gated wellness and lifestyle Tee Time on the Gulf Coast • 23

community of Craig Ranch. The property features an award-winning championship golf course with an array of premium amenities with the personalized service and privileges that have become synony-mous with the PGA TOUR’s acclaimed TPC Networks of clubs.

At TPC Craig Ranch, an amazing round of golf is just the beginning of an out-standing PGA TOUR experience. Since opening in 2004, the golf course at TPC Craig Ranch has received multiple ac-colades including being named one of the 10 best golf courses in Texas by Golf Digest in 2011. TPC Craig Ranch is also one of only two golf courses in the Dal-las-Fort Worth area certified as an Audu-bon Cooperative Sanctuary System.

The par-72, 7,438-yard Tom Weis-kopf designed layout is a superb test with stunning views of rolling hills and Rowlett Creek. In addition to a awesome golf course, TPC Craig Ranch features an extensive practice facility and driving range as well as a versatile clubhouse. I had an absolute last here. Didn’t score as well as I would have liked, but man it was beautiful. My score: 79

Again, if you are in the north Dallas area, I encourage you to set up a tee time at one of these courses and let me know how you played.

Designed for Coaches, teachers and, V1 Pro allows golf professional’s to be the tech wizard in making your swing easier to understand and easier to progress forward. V1 Pro is simple to use and understand. Quick navigation makes the video lesson eventful with the mental imagery the student needs. V1 provides great model swings and drawing tools so there is less more time spent delivering great instruction.

We surmise that 85% of our students learn that their inability to swing on plane can be corrected by simply man-aging their posture. V1 provides this feed back.

Did you know that 65% of the core muscles in your swing produce power? Only 20% of power in your swing is produced by your feet and knees, leaving only 15% from your arms and hands! V1 shows your sequence to engaging these percentages.
