Hello Parents and Friends,
Welcome back to Term 2! It has been quite a strange start to the term with the three day week making
it feel like a bit of a false start. This week however has been much more settled and it has been great to
see such excellent learning taking place within and outside of the classrooms.
PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

Page 2 of 15 3 May 2019
Last Wednesday our special ANZAC Day assembly was hosted by
our Grade 6 students. They did a magnificent job presenting on
such an important day for all Australians. The School Captains and
student Wellbeing Captains also attended a Schools ANZAC Day
Service on that same Wednesday, run by the Templestowe Rotary
Club at Templestowe Memorial Reserve. It was a very touching
Service and Annie, Eran, Shylah and Mila represented our school
proudly, laying a wreath on behalf of the entire Templestowe Park
PS community at the memorial. Throughout last week all students
learnt about the ANZAC spirit and the men and women who fought
to make Australia the country it is today. The ANZAC spirit is as
important today as it was all those years ago on the shores of
Gallipoli.
Important - Student Free Day: Friday, 31 May
Yesterday I posted on Compass that we will have a student free day on Friday, 31
May. I apologise for the short notice; we had difficulty confirming a date with
one of our presenters which caused the delay in setting the date. The curriculum
day will focus on the following areas:
MATHEMATICS: 9.00AM – 12.00PM
The Templestowe Park PS Maths Collaborative Team will guide the staff in professional learning
in our Mental Maths scope and sequence, Assessment and the ‘Understanding’ of proficiency.
CIRCLE TIME: PRESENTED BY BEHAVIOUR MATTERS: 12.40PM-3.40PM
As part of our AIP focus on anti-bullying and student wellbeing our staff will be undertaking
professional development on how to conduct successful Circle time discussions in the classroom.
Term 2 Overview
Term 2 curriculum overviews for all year levels have been forwarded to parents via Compass. We changed
from positing year level websites to term overviews as a result of feedback from the school community.
Within these overviews you will find what your child is learning in all curriculum areas, the Positive
Education focus for the term, homework requirements, Specialist days and teacher contact details.
All term overviews are permanently kept in the Community Section of Compass (choose School
Documentation from the drop down menu then School Community Information then the Year level
folder that you wish to access – you can then download the file you need).
Annual Report to the School Community
The 2018 Annual Report to the school community has now been published and can be accessed by the
school community. 2018 was a very successful year for our school as we saw excellent academic results,
wellbeing outcomes and considerable improvements to our school grounds and facilities.
To read the 2018 Annual Report please click on the link below to access the school website:

Parking & Drop Off
As it is the start of Term 2, I wanted to take the opportunity to remind parents and community members
about parking and road safety around the school. Following parking guidelines is essential to maintaining
the safety of our students. I have provided some information below to assist in finding the easiest and
most accessible parking options.
GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH (ST HARALAMBOS):
The Church have kindly allowed the school to use their carpark
at drop off and pick up times. This a short 350m walk from
the Church Road entry to the school. Parents are encouraged
to park and walk from here if they would like to meet their
children within the school grounds.
TEACHERS ON YARD DUTY UNTIL 3:45PM:
Parents can wait until the afternoon rush is over and pick up their children from 3:35-3:45pm. Teachers
are on yard duty at the main entrances of the school and will wait with your children until 3:45pm. Some
parents are already doing this and find they can drive directly to the front of the school with minimal
traffic to pick up their child.
NO PARKING IN VACANT BLOCK ON CHURCH ROAD (CNR OF CHURCH ROAD AND MERNA DRIVE)
This is a ‘No Parking’ zone; motorists will receive a parking fine if they park within this area.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Thank you to the PFA for the Mothers’ Day Stall
I would like to extend a huge thank you to Sandra Ciano and all the
mums and grandmothers who ran the Mothers’ Day Stall on Tuesday.
The PFA have been busy organising the stall for many months and it is
a great thrill for our students to buy their mum a small gift.
I know all the mums at Templestowe Park can’t wait to find out what
special gift that has been bought for them.
I would like to acknowledge and thank the following helpers: Prue Lai, Judith Manuel, Maryam Sefidroodi,
Amanda Morgan, Hayley Ciancarelli, Manju Parmar, Shaimaa Farag, Aylin Eser, Neda Orandi, Jaccy
Stephens, Rashmi Pahuja, Lusi Haryanto, Jade Granger, Esta Hatzolos, Claire Sadiku, Kimberley Naismith,
Nicole Flavien, Josephine Rummel, Rosa Lee, Alison Hooper, Trudy Roe, Melanie Brehaut, Rhoda Zhau,
Johanna Gladman, Michelle Taylor, Barbara Arkenbout, Asleyn Billqvist, Lee Houghton White, Jan Eldred,
Thurka Kalaichelvan, Emma White, Melissa Stephens, Cara Barrett and of course, Sandra Ciano.
Grounds and Facilities Update
We have been busy over the school holidays improving our facilities. A timber fence was built next to the
Prep playground to ensure the safety of our students. In the BER building six new, large screens were
installed to replace the projectors that were in the Grades 3, 5 and 6 classrooms.
We are currently finalising the planning documentation to place a shade sail over the outdoor classroom
in the Outdoor Eco Education Centre. This will provide a beautiful shaded environment for learning and
sustainability activities and during playtime. We hope to have this project completed before the end of
Term 2.

Visitors from the Solomon Islands
Last Monday we had two Principals from the Solomon Islands
visit Templestowe Park. Our connection to the Solomon Islands
is through our Grade 2 teacher, Ms Jenna Mason. Jenna visited
the Solomon Islands a few years ago and taught in a Grade 2
class as part of her university studies. As you could imagine
schooling in the Solomon Islands is quite different to Australia
with Jenna having to teach 42 students in her class.
I took Mr Jackson and Mr Charlwis on a school tour and we had
a great discussion about education and teaching. We certainly
had a lot in common in our educational theory. After this they
both spent time in classrooms observing lessons and answering the many questions that students had
about their home. Our Grade 2 students wrote letters for Mr Jackson and Mr Charlwis to take back to
their Grade 2 children; they hope this will be the beginning of a pen pal friendship.
Education Week: Celebrating Careers! 19th-25th May
2019 is the 75th year of Education Week and it aims to positively
profile and celebrate the strengths and achievements of Victoria’s
government education sector.
Education Week 2019 is all about celebrating careers and
pathways that will make your dream job come true. It is an
opportunity for schools, TAFEs and Tech Schools to showcase the
work they are doing to support students in their career pathways. The week will raise awareness of career
education and the new Transforming Career Education reforms.
We are gearing up for a huge week of exploring and celebrating careers at Templestowe Park during
Education Week. There are plenty of fun and exciting activities planned and we will communicate these
to you in the coming weeks. We would like to invite parents to come in and talk to students about their
professions. I will be sending out a message in the coming days so please consider coming in and sharing
your own career path with our students.
We will be hosting three open days or nights during Education week. Our Open Night is a huge celebration
of learning with hundreds of our students and community members joining in on the fun. Please see the
dates below. More information about these days will be forwarded to you in the coming weeks.
Saturday, 18th May (9.30am - 12.00pm)
Tuesday, 21st May (9.30am - 10.30am)
Wednesday, 22nd May (6.00pm - 8.00pm)

Positive Education: Resilience
Throughout the term students will be learning about how they can develop their resilience to be able to
bounce back from difficult situations. During our RRIPO session this week all students made a ‘How Bad
Is It?’ scale and learnt how to put difficult and challenging situations into perspective. Developing
resilience is one of the most important skills that our students need to develop as they grow up. We face
many difficult situations in life and we must develop skills to handle these situations and bounce back.
We need to model and assist our children to develop these skills.
At the conclusion of my article in this Newsletter I have provided advice from Michael Grose on how we
as parents can be resilience robbers. It is a great piece and extremely practical. I hope it comes in handy
for you.
A Taste of School (Preschool Program)
All preschool aged children are invited to attend our ‘Taste of School’ preschool program. These sessions
are designed for preschool aged children to get their very first taste of what school is like. They are fast
paced, fun and exciting sessions that are specially designed for preschool students.
A Taste of School: Thursday, 23rd May: 2.00-3.00pm
Wednesday, 29th May: 2.00-3.00pm
Tuesday, 4th June: 2.00-3.00pm
Please contact the school office with your email address to register your interest.
Enrol Now for 2020
We have already received a high number of enrolments for Prep in 2020. If
you have a child who will be starting school in next year, please collect an
enrolment form from the school office. If you have family or friends who
have a child commencing school in 2020 please invite them to book a tour.
Resiliency Robbers
By Parenting Educator, Michael Grose
All parents have the best of intentions when raising kids. Wanting what is best for kids can cause parents
to make decisions that are not always in their (children’s) long-term best interests.
If you buy the line that the promotion of resilience is in the best interests of kids then check out the
following common parenting mistakes that reduce children’s resilience.
ROBBER # 1:
FIGHT ALL THEIR BATTLES FOR THEM
Nothing wrong with going into bat when kids struggle or meet with difficulty inside or outside
school but make sure this is the last resort, not the first option.
Resilience notion #1: Give kids the opportunity to develop their own resourcefulness.
ROBBER # 2:
MAKE THEIR PROBLEM, YOUR PROBLEM
Sometimes parents can take too much responsibility for issues that are really up to children to
work out or decide. Here’s a clue if you are wondering what I am talking about: a jumper is
something a mother puts on her son when she is cold!
Resilience notion #2: Make their problem, their problem.
6
Page 6 of 15 3 May 2019
ROBBER # 3:
GIVE KIDS TOO MUCH VOICE
In this era of giving children a voice it is easy to go overboard and allow them too much of a say
in what happens to them. Kids often take the easy option to avoid hard or unpleasant situations.
Resilience notion #3: Make decisions for kids and expect them to adjust and cope.
ROBBER # 4:
PUT UNREALISTIC OR RELENTLESS PRESSURE ON KIDS TO PERFORM
Expectations about success and achievement are important. Too low and kids
will meet them. Too high and kids can give up. Too much and kids can
experience anxiety.
Resilience notion # 4: Keep expectations in line with children’s abilities and
don’t put excessive pressure on them.
ROBBER # 5:
LET KIDS GIVE IN TOO EASILY
Resilient learners link success with effort. They don’t give up because they don’t like a teacher or
when confronted with multi-step or more complex activities. Similarly, they don’t bail out of a
sporting term half way through the season because the team is not winning or they are not
enjoying it.
Resilience notion # 5: Encourage kids to complete what they have started even if the results aren’t
perfect.
ROBBER # 6:
NEGLECT TO DEVELOP INDEPENDENCE
Don’t wait until they are teenagers to develop the skills of independent living. Start early and
promote a broad skill set so that they can look after themselves if you are not around.
Resilience notion # 6: Don’t routinely do for kids what they can do for themselves.
ROBBER # 7:
RESCUE KIDS FROM CHALLENGING OR STRETCH SITUATIONS
There are many times kids are put in situations that are outside their comfort zones for a time.
For instance, giving a talk, singing at the school concert or going on school camp may be
challenges for some kids. They are all situations that kids usually cope with so show your
confidence in them and skill them up rather than opt for avoidance.
Resilience notion # 7: Overcoming challenges enables kids to grow and improve.
Sometimes the manageable hardships that children experience such as a friend moving away, not being
invited to a party or completing a difficult school project are fabulous learning opportunities. They help
kids to stretch and grow. Dealing with them effectively also teaches kids that they are capable of coping
when they meet some of life’s curve balls. And that is a huge lesson to learn at any age.
See you around the school!

What is ESP Day? Well, it’s certainly not about ‘extra sensory perception’, although I do think many of our
wonderful ES members do have extraordinary perceptions and insights into the hearts and minds of our
students and our educational communities.
Held on 16 May, ESP Day will see thousands of education support personnel (ESP) across the globe
recognised and celebrated for the extraordinary contribution they make to our students, and our schools.
Please take some time to celebrate the work of our ES staff at Templestowe Park by thanking them in
some way for their contributions to the school. You will find them in the school office and in the
classrooms, working hard to make our school the wonderful place it is today.
School photos were sent home this week to those families who ordered them.
Online Ordering
Families are still able to order student school photos online but may incur a small late fee. Please visit
AdvancedLife’s website: www.advancedlife.com.au. The school’s unique login code can be found on your
Compass Newsfeed.
Whole School Photo
Our Whole School Photo will be taken later in the year; we will advise you
of this date once it has been selected.
Kind regards,

Book Donations: 13th May to 28th June
The Library is a vital part of our school, providing children with books to foster a love of reading and a
range of rich resources, to access and search for information.
We are inviting families to support our school by donating a book to the Library during the period: 13th
May to 28th June. The School Council provides a generous amount for the library budget each year
however the cost of books and resources is continually increasing.
All children will receive a book donation form next week. Donations should be returned to the office or
classroom teacher in an envelope marked School Library Donation. Your child will then be given an
opportunity to choose a book from our selection that they would like to donate. They will be the first to
borrow that book and take it home for the family to see and then return it to the school to be added to
our school collection.
Your child will be called during their library time to choose their book or books. The process of choosing
books will happen as quickly as possible but as there will be many students who donate, it will take time.
Each book will have a certificate placed inside with the name of the child making the donation.
Thank you,
Diane Ayton and the Library Committee
Absences
Parents are responsible for keeping up-to-date approvals for their children’s absences on Compass. When
you log onto your parent welcome page a short message will appear above the newsfeed on the top right
hand side of the screen. You will then need to click on the link ‘Click here for more information’ where
you will then see a list of times that your child was absent from school.
By first clicking on the box of the dates needing your approval, then
the “man” with the green tick on his shoulder, you will be able to
approve your child’s absences.
A detailed explanation of this process can be found in the ‘School Documentation’ section within the
Community dropdown menu on the parent welcome page. If you require any other help please do
not hesitate to contact the school office.
Late Arrivals and Early Departures
Students who arrive ‘LATE to’ or ‘LEAVE EARLY from’ the school must also have “approvals” logged by
parents. Please note that these approvals can only be recorded after the fact as they are “time stamped”
by Compass. Parents/Carers are not to pre-approve these partial day absences.
All students who arrive late to school must report to the office to ensure they are not marked as absent
for the first session; parents do not need to accompany the students on these occasions. However,
students must always be signed out by a parent or carer that is listed as a student contact. If your child
is being signed out by someone who is not authorised to do so, that adult must bring a letter of authority
with them.

This term, all students are learning about living things, focusing mainly
on plants and animals.
The Prep students will be looking at how living things survive and how
their environment helps them to do so.
The Grade 1/2s will be learning about similar content to the Prep students but will be going a step further
and looking at how animals have features that are specific to their environment, for example dessert
animals having large ears to dispel heat or marine life having flippers or fins to maneuver.
The Grade 3/4s will be looking at survival in the context of life cycles and learning about how different
types of animals have varying types of life cycle.
Finally, the Grade 5/6s are focusing on survival in particular environments and
evolution.

Second-Hand and Lost & Found – School Uniforms - ONLY
Parents from the school have created a Templestowe Park “buy, swap and
sell” group on Facebook in an effort to help families locate lost and found
jackets and other items of uniform; it will also be a place to sell off old
uniforms. We encourage you to look at the group to see if it helps you in any way.
The group can be found by clicking on the following link:
