Tenson was one of the iconic brands during skiing’s golden

era of the 1970s and ‘80s, and our performance-driven skiwear collection was worn by some of the world’s top

skiers. We earned a loyal following with our trendsetting designs and at the beginning of the ‘90s, Chamonix, France was the place to be and Tenson was the clothing brand to wear.

This was the beginning of the freeride explosion. Among our many marketing initiatives at the time was the sponsorship of Dan Kullberg’s and Tomas Allder’s (Pan Productions) 1994 ski movie, The Hardest Part is Getting Off. The film showcased the talents of elite mogul skiers Patrick Carlman and Leif Persson from the Swedish freestyle team, snowboarder Eva Sandelgård, as well as Chamonix pro freeskier Yan André among others. The filming took place in Swedish ski stations Riksgränsen, Kebnekaise and Åre, and at Chamonix’s Grand Montets.

Almost 20 years have passed since then and we are renewing our commitment to skiwear. As one of the world’s premier ski resorts, Chamonix provides the perfect setting to present the contemporary colours and clean, minimalist lines of our 2012/13 skiwear collection.

In addition, our Outdoor Series, with a wide range of urban parkas, jackets and accessories, looks as smart on Chamonix’s rue Paccard as it does on Europe’s most fashionable streets.

This year our collection is presented by former ski and snowboard pros, mountain guides and locals, all of them living the dream in Chamonix with skiing and the outdoors as an important part of their daily lives. A group of second-generation Chamonix Swedes wears our newly launched and expanded children and junior collection during a play date at the mid-station of Chamonix’s Aiguille du Midi. Recording the action of this international group is experienced action photographer, Dan Ferrer.

Tenson is an authentic ski brand with a strong history of producing serious skiwear. Our 2012/13 collection has something for ski lovers of all ages, from amateurs to professionals. Creative emphasis is on fashion, quality and function designed to meet the highest expectations of outdoor lovers with an active lifestyle. Check out the collection and become a part of the tradition!

TENSON AND CHAMONIX - AN AUTHENTIC TRADITION

For over 200 years, the little town of Chamonix at the foot of Mont Blanc in the French Alps has seduced adventurers and travellers, mountaineers, extreme skiers, powder-mad

ski bums, mountain bikers and hordes of tourists. This is the world’s most legendary resort and a trendsetter with its leading position as the adventure sports capital of the world. This is the place that is described as the birthplace of alpinism, a climbing Mecca, paragliding paradise, and arguably, the world’s toughest ski resort.

In the heart of the village you’ll find busy boulangeries, Belle Epoque architecture, and even a horse-drawn carriage that reflect its history as an early tourist destination for Victorian-era aristocrats who came to Chamonix for the same reasons that attract tourists today: the close proximity between town and nature that makes this place unique. Chamonix is a yearly destination for the world’s best skiers, and the backdrop for the tastiest action photos, the craziest stunts, and loads of yearly ski and adventure films. However, despite this reputation, Chamonix is not just for the adventurer. The valley is surrounded by six different ski areas with 49 lifts and 70 runs providing skiing for all abilities including families with kids.

The Aiguille du Midi télépherique is certainly one of the most impressive in the world with trams packed to capacity with skiers, climbers and tourists swiftly transported from the valley floor at 1035 meters up to 3800 meters above sea level. From the top, the infamous knife-edge arête, with steep drops to either side, must be descended to access the skiing. This is where you will encounter a continuous queue of extreme skiers side-slipping past mountain guides who calmly encourage their nervous clients towards the start of the Vallée Blanche, a 23-kilometer ski run that ends near Chamonix’s centre ville.

For many people, Chamonix is synonymous with off-piste skiing. The extremely steep, high-alpine terrain offers unique opportunities for adventurous skiing from all lift stations. Perhaps there is nowhere else in the world where you can get as far from the slopes without the aid of climbing skins or a helicopter. This is precisely why Chamonix is considered one of the world’s best, and most dangerous, ski resorts.

In 1924 Chamonix hosted history’s first Winter Olympics that profiled the city as a world-class resort. Since the 1970s this place has achieved a cult-like status drawing large numbers of ski bums,

extreme skiers, ski photographers, models, and large numbers of winter tourists who flock to the small picturesque town at the foot of Mont Blanc.

Around 10,000 people live in the valley year round and among this mix is a large number of French, many Italians, and a small but influential group of English and Swedes. In fact, Chamonix is the most popular ski resort in the Alps among Swedes who come to ski and live the dream, some of whom eventually settle down and stay. The town even has its own Swedish corner, the Chambre 9 bar, which is famous for its après ski.

In this issue of our annual catalogue, we profile a few the many Swedes – Eva Sandelgard, Robert Eriksson, and Stefan Carlsson – who came for a season and are still here today. Our conversations with them tell the full story of why so many people fall in love with the beauty of Chamonix.

When he was 18, Robert decided that he did not want to spend his life in an office job so, even though he loved reading, he left

school. As a lover of the great outdoors, he enrolled in a two-year outdoor leadership program in the Dalarna region of Sweden.

During these two years, Robert trained in a variety of outdoor activities like canoeing, skiing, telemark skiing, randonée skiing, and ice skating on lakes. He also learned outdoor survival skills, as well as how to build his own skis and canoe and how to bivouac during winter. “During my second year at school I built my own torvkåta (house in the forest) and lived there during the entire school year.” Outdoor life became an even stronger part of his identity.

After school, Robert did his military service at Arvidsjaur in the northern part of Sweden as a Norrlandsjägare (northern hunter) for a year. During this time, he and his fellow soldiers spent most of the time outdoors (even in temperatures of -40˚C), constantly living in a tent or bivouac, using skis as the most efficient tool for travelling, and learning even more survival skills.

After leaving the military and until he was 30, Robert had a wide range of outdoor jobs, all of which have helped him become a multi-faceted sportsman. “I worked as a rafting instructor, climbing instructor, and a ‘smoke diver’ for the

fire service, to name a few. And I became a pretty good climber after spending a few years in a harness building adventure parks.

Robert has always enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others and applying his skills towards a purpose. For instance, he worked at a school for the children of immigrants and refugees applying for Swedish citizenship where, in addition to teaching sports, he also taught maths and Swedish.

One year, while working as a rafting guide in the Swedish ski resort, Åre, Robert met his friend Martin Lundberg. Martin told him about a ski patrol opening in Narvik, Norway where he ended up for a couple of winters. “While I was in Narvik, I became inspired by a local mountain guide, Anders Bergwall, and decided that I wanted to become a guide as well. So for the past few years I’ve been training to become a mountain guide.”

In 2006, Robert went on an expedition to South America with his brother and two friends to climb 6962-meter Aconcagua. “It was an amazing opportunity for me to practice my mountaineering skills and I loved having a project to train for.”

After returning from Aconcagua, Robert went to Chamonix for the first time to climb Mont Blanc. “I was amazed

Robert Eriksson grew up in Gurresta, a countryside village just outside Uppsala. Like many Swedish kids, Robert learned to downhill and cross-country ski at school and during family ski holidays in Swedish resorts like Sälen and Vemdalen.

by Chamonix. The mountains were steeper and more spectacular than anything I had ever seen before. I had never seen such close proximity between the city and mountains.”

While Narvik remained his winter base for skiing, Robert started to spend summers in Chamonix and training in all aspects of climbing. “Chamonix is the capital of alpinism. It is where the profession of mountain guiding was born and is the home of the famous ENSA (the national school for skiing and alpinism) guiding school. Before becoming a mountain guide, you just have to spend time in Chamonix to get experience.”

SBO is the Swedish organization that teaches and certifies international mountain guides. The demands are high and it takes at least five years of intense skiing and climbing to qualify. To pass all the exams takes another three years, however after 1.5 years prospective guides have the opportunity to pass the ‘aspirant’ exam. As an aspirant guide you are allowed to work independently in Scandinavia and under the supervision of an authorized guide in the Alps. In May 2011, Robert was one of six who managed to pass the SBO aspirant exam.

“I am very exited about starting to work for real! I already had a couple of clients this summer with climbing trips in Lofoten, Norway, La Grave, France and a couple of Mont Blanc summits.

“For me, leadership and the human aspect of guiding – guiding people to new experiences, sharing a great day skiing – is more important than the adrenalin you get from doing the sport just for yourself. Environmental consciousness is another subject close to Robert’s heart, “So perhaps I shouldn’t mention that I’ll be working as a heli-ski guide in Abisko in Sweden this winter – hahaha. Someone has to do it!”

Robert has an extremely mobile lifestyle. “Scandinavia is my home right now, but regardless of where I am based in the future, Chamonix will always be a part of my life. It always feels like coming home when I come to Chamonix. I have many friends and colleagues who live here and the town is filled with people who have the same interests. It’s nice to be in a civilized town where you can also spend a lot of time in the wilderness.” It’s an amazing opportunity to have a foot in Northern Scandinavia and the Chamonix valley and enjoy the contrasts of living in both.”

For the next few years, Robert will continue to guide clients and work towards his full mountain guide certification. “I have never burned for any profession before in my life but I am now convinced that mountain guiding is going to be my full-time job. I admit, it’s a risky job but I believe danger makes life even more precious.”

“After graduating, I worked as a hairdresser for a couple of years in Stockholm. But before moving to New York I wanted to take a break and live out this Nature Girl thing I had inside me. I wanted to combine my love of the outdoors with haircutting.”

So in 1989, Eva hit the road with her skis and scissors and headed for Chamonix. “In Sweden, Chamonix was already known as a ski bum place

because of the amazing terrain. But it also seemed like a good place because it is a real town with enough people living there that I figured I could ski all day and pay the bills by cutting hair at night.” She enjoyed her season so much that each year she postponed her dream of hitting the big time in New York.

In 1990, during her second winter in Chamonix, Eva tried snowboarding, discovered she had talent for it and immediately became hooked. “Believe it or not, mogul snowboarding was the thing to do at that time and Sweden’s mogul and snowboarding elite, guys like Anders Auer and Stefan Nilsson, used to hang out in Chamonix. I was doing it for fun, as a hobby, but I went out there every day and did my best to keep up with the best snowboarders in the valley.”

Eva soon started competing, doing photo shoots and go on snowboard trips for magazines. Sponsorship followed and before long, she was living the dream as a professional snowboarder in Chamonix. However, there was more than one aspect to Eva Sandelgård’s dream…

In 1995, Sweden became a member of the European Community and it became possible for les etrangers to start a business in France. With her ambition of becoming a professional hairdresser still on her mind, Eva decided to move to Chamonix on year-round basis and, together with her friend Toya Westberg, open a hair salon and café.

This was also the year she first met her man, Gabi Bascoulergue. “In the beginning, Gabi didn’t know a word of English and I didn’t speak French at all. I don’t really know what we were talking about!” But thanks to Gabi, Eva quickly learned French, which helped her in running her French business and to assimilate into French society.

While all this was going on, Eva was making a name for herself as one of the top women snowboarders in the world. Sponsorships were becoming more serious and she was invited to join the Burton team. “I believe you can only do two things well at the same time, so something had to change. I decided to focus on work and snowboarding, so my party days were over.”

Eva kept her salon open from 3:00 in the afternoon until midnight and was always on the first lift in the morning. Her hard work paid off and she appeared on the covers of international snowboarding magazines like Onboard, Transworld SNOWboarding, Snowboard UK, and others. She also appeared in Warren Miller films among others. “Those were tough days but I learned so much from them and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.”

Eva Sandelgård grew up skiing during family vacations in Ramund- berget and Hälsingland where her family originally comes from. But she was also a city girl from Stockholm with big hair and big dreams of moving to New York to become a famous hairdresser.

However, along with her success came more demands from her sponsors. Eva was told to focus on her snowboard career 100%, so that she could spend more time in the U.S. and get more exposure there. In 2000, Eva managed to secure a bank loan, which enabled her to buy her own salon. “My sponsors wanted me to spend more time at events and parties. But my business was growing and it was just as exciting for me as snowboarding. I wasn’t going to give up the salon!”

As a sponsored athlete, Eva’s sponsors provided her with a travel budget. She was invited on trips and decided which photo and film projects to be a part of. During one of her trips to Alaska, Eva became the first female snowboarder to ride the Messner Couloir on Denali, North America’s biggest mountain.

“Alaska is fantastic! Flying by helicopter to get to so many big, virgin mountains. But there is also the negative side of these scary avalanches… Also, Spetsbergen at Svalbard is one of the coolest trips I’ve ever done. My friends and I were left in the middle of nowhere with our snowboards, a snow sled, and a gun! Instead of being worried about the mountains and avalanches, we had to overcome our fear of meeting a polar bear!”

Eva made many trips over the years: Australia, USA, Europe and Scandinavia. Her golden years when she achieved the most success were 1998 – 2000 when she became World Extreme Snowboarding Champion by winning The Redbull

Verbier Extreme three years in a row. “I felt like I was at the top of my game and I was very satisfied by what I had achieved in snowboarding. I’d had enough of traveling and somewhere deep inside I began to feel scared whereas before I felt almost immortal.”

In 2001, Eva give birth to her first son, Leo. However that didn’t stop her from running her own business and snowboarding at a professional level. In 2002, she decided to go for the world extreme snowboarding title again. With her best friend Toya as babysitter, they took off for Verbier. “I needed up in second place. I was disappointed and I proved to myself what I already knew: that you can’t do more than two things well at the same time!”

Soon after, Eva had her second son Milo and with her business going through the roof and a family to take care of, she happily closed the book on her professional snowboard career. “I am so lucky to have those 10 good years as a professional snowboarder! Now, I’m back on skis again and trying to keep up with my two sons. Skis have developed so much over the past two decades it feels like a totally new challenge.”

Watch out freeski world. Sounds like there might soon be a new player on the scene…

Stefan was passionate about skateboarding from an early age and he became pretty good at it, going on to compete in national competitions

during the ‘80s. Stefan describes that period in his life, “All I could think about was skating back then and as soon as I graduated from restaurant academy, my best friend, Kalle Blomberg, and I took off to the skateboarding center of the universe, California.” After three winters in the States, Stefan and Kalle wanted to try something new. One of their old skate buddies from Gothenburg, Magnus Ås, had discovered Chamonix so Stefan and Kalle decided to trade their skateboards for snowboards and spend a winter season there.

Stefan’s mission was to snowboard all day, every day so he took a cleaning job at a hotel … which only lasted a weekend. However he soon managed to upgrade to dishwasher at the coolest bar in town, Le Brevent Bar and Restaurant. Johan Bäckman from Sweden was running the restaurant and Stefan was truly inspired by him as a chef. Stefan was blown away by Chamonix. “All the best riders that I had seen in all the snowboard movies and magazines were everywhere – up on the mountain, hanging out in town. It was amazing!” One season turned into many more with cooking jobs at different restaurants in town.

In 1996, Stefan decided to give up the ski bum lifestyle and move back to Gothenburg to give the real world a try. But he quickly learned that he couldn’t get snowboarding out of his head along with his his ultimate dream of running his own restaurant in Chamonix. So after one dark, rainy winter in Gothenburg, Stefan went back to Chamonix to

visit his friends Eva Sandelgård and Gabi Bascoulergue and look for a place to rent and open as a restaurant. With long dreadlocks and not speaking a word of French, Stefan had no luck whatsoever in finding a place and was ready to give up. “I was pretty disappointed and was talking to Eva, who also happened to be a professiohnal hairdresser. She told me that at 27 years old and after 10 years with dreads it was time for an update.”

With a fresh new lid spin, Stefan scheduled one more meeting with a local real estate agency and brought Eva along as translator. Success! A contract was signed for a space on Chamonix’s rue de Moulin. Stefan and his girlfriend Malin packed their Volvo 245, moved to Chamonix, and with crossed fingers, started the now-famous Munchies restaurant, an international restaurant inspired by Asiatic food.

Like any new business, getting Munchies off the ground was a total roller coaster ride. While riding the previous winter, Stefan had blown some ligaments and, unfortunately, his knee operation didn’t go as planned. His insurance company paid him SEK100,000 to compensate for the botched operation, which Stefan then used to launch his new enterprise!

But it was a tough time to run a restaurant and today Stefan still doesn’t know how they managed to survive will all the costs and never-ending bills. “We had no money to pay employees so Malin and I worked every night, all night. We even lived at the restaurant!” Luckily, a good friend of ours, Jocke Hallberg, came down to work in the bar. He’s one of those rare, one-of-a-kind bartenders and thanks to Jocke, we learned a lot.”

Stefan Carlsson grew up in Göteborg and began skiing in Hovfjället in Värmland with his family during school holidays. But it wasn’t long before he gave up skiing as a teenager in order to give snowboarding a try.

Munchies was open only at night so that Stefan could indulge his passion for snowboarding during the day. He often went riding with his friends, including Eva. When Eva started competing she tried to get Stefan to join her, even going as far as entering Stefan as a wild card in the Verbier Extreme contest. However, there was no room on the start list, which in the end was a good thing. Stefan is more of a soul surfer and prefers to ride with his bros and charge big mountain lines like Chamonix’s Aiguille du Midi and Pas de Chevre.

In 2001, after four months in business, Munchies’ landlord finally gave Stefan and Malin an ultimatum: either buy the Munchies space or move out. Needless, to say they made the investment, Stefan bought out his partner Malin, and Munchies continues to have a great crew led by Stefan’s old skate and snowboard buddy, Kalle Blomberg, in the kitchen. After 10 years of hard work, Stefan is now enjoying a good balance between working, getting his adrenaline fix on the mountain, and spending quality time with his wife, Camilla Olofsdotter, and his 3.5-year-old son Lucas. Although he is not as motivated as he was during his first seasons, it’s rare not to see him in the first cable car on powder days. As an experienced hardcore, Stefan points out, “It’s more about quality than quantity these days.

And as for moving back to Gothenburg? “I can’t really see it. Chamonix is home now and I can’t think of any other place on Earth I would rather live.”

Ski cross is an action-packed, highly physical, and extremely intense sport that will get more attention during the 2012 season than ever before.

Ski cross has grown dramatically since the IOC made the decision to make it an Olympic sport and this year the Swedish team is better prepared than ever with a strong crew, new sponsors, and national management that will enable the athletes to reach new heights. There are no championships during the 2011/2012 season so everyone is focusing on the World Cup. In addition, the Swedish team is already preparing for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia and will be among the top contenders in the fight for medals.

The main goal of the Swedish team is to be a world leader in the development of the sport. To reach that goal, the athletes need to always race creatively and be ready to go for the gold in every situation.

Anna Holmlund was born 1987 in Sundsvall, Sweden and her career as a professional ski cross racer hit full speed during her first season. Today she is a World Cup winner, a World Championship bronze medalist and one of our biggest hopes for a medal at the Olympics in Sochi 2014. Anna is a tall, hard-training woman with a big smile and whose biggest strength is her fast start.

SKI CROSS – AN UP-AND-COMING

SPORTLars Lewen is the veteran on our team. This city boy, born in 1975 in Stockholm, has been a professional since the nineties and has several World Cup victories and X-Games medals to his name. Last year he suffered a knee injury and missed the whole season but this year this happy man is back for a rematch, big time!

Michael Forslund is an up-and-coming racer from Vasaloppet, Mora at the heart of cross-country ski land. He was born in 1986 and had his best season ever last year with two finishes in the top ten in World Cup before crashing and injuring his shoulder, which caused him to miss the last few competitions. He is now back for the entire race season and in better shape than ever with his sights focused squarely on the podium.

Victor Öhling Norberg is the rookie in our team. This youngster was born in 1990 practically on the slope at Funäsdalen ski resort. Victor is a new generation skier who rides with a complete lack of respect and who relentlessly attacks from start to finish in every heat. His cool mind is perfect for racing, which is why he started last season by qualifying for several finals heats in the ski cross World Cup. Victor represents a big hope for the future.

58

Scandinavians have a well-deserved reputation for dressing their kids in functional clothing that keeps them warm, dry and happy. With this in mind, we launched our first children and juniors collections

last year and met with overwhelming success.

What was the secret? We took a good look at our clothing range and realized that we couldn’t just shrink our best-selling adult garments down to kids’ sizes. Instead, we started with a blank page and determined fit, function and design based on how children grow and move. We integrated these ideas with our tried-and-tested ‘three-layer system’ which includes a moisture-wicking liner, a heat-retaining middle and a windproof outer. The result was a bunch of smiling, happy, Tenson-wearing kids wherever you found snow.

With so much demand for our Kids clothing, we’ve expanded our 2012/13 range to include more styles and a wider variety of comfortable, technical fabrics in the colours that children love most.

To present the line, a group of second-generation Chamonix Swedes wears our new and expanded Kids collection during a play date at the mid-station of Chamonix’s Aiguille du Midi. While it’s all fun and games now, in a couple of years these guys will be the ones to watch!

MPC EXTREME

As its name suggests, this is the highest grade of MPC. Developed according to the exacting demands of ambitious outdoor athletes and adventurers, it combines

extremely effective waterproofing with exceptional fabric-breathing performance. MPC Extreme is also available in a 3-layer system with stretch characteristics – ideal for activities that require optimum freedom of movement.

MPC

MPC is characterized by extremely long-lasting waterproof properties and above average breathing performance, making it ideal for the active outdoor life, regardless of the water and moisture Mother Nature decides to throw in your direction. Tenson MPC is also available with stretch characteristics, perfect for those activities that test us a little more.

AIR PUSH

Created with the challenging activities Tenson people enjoy as inspiration, Air Push is our inhouse developed material that delivers superior

breathability and comfort wherever you are and whatever you’re doing. Fully recyclable and featuring density that is 20 to 30% higher than conventional materials, its fine pores allow moisture on the inside to be wicked away while at the same time, preventing water permeation from the outside. As well as outstanding water resistance, we created Air Push to be strong yet

light. This means that it doesn’t stiffen and hinder freedom of movement when the temperature drops. Good news for those of us who see cold weather as a challenge as opposed to an obstacle. And when you finally come back indoors, Air Push allows your garment to dry faster – so you can get back outside again.

NANOPLUS

Nanoplus provides superior water/oil repellency and protection against spills and stains. Nanoplus delivers durable long lasting protection.

DERMIZAX

For those of you who lead a very active life, we recommend Dermizax. It offers high levels of water proofing and minimal condensation, no matter the intensity of your activity while its highly efficient non-porous membrane structure delivers maximum breathability. A durable, flexible fabric for the real adventurer.

SUPPLEX

Supplex is a high-tech nylon that looks, feels and breathes like soft cotton and because it’s made of numerous filaments, it´s softer than standard nylon. Supplex is low in weight, packable and durable and makes any garment windproof, water-resistant, stain-resistant and quick-drying. Supplex has such a wide range of practical qualities, you´ll find it in quite a few of our garments.

POWER COMFORT

Power Comfort is a fleece soft shell that is used as a isolating second-layer. The garment effectively carries away moisture if you begin to sweat and

creates an isolating air pocket keeping you warm and dry.
