Welcome everyone to the 2019 school year! A very special welcome to all of our Kindergarten students and to all other new enrolments to our school. I

know that our school community will make all new arrivals feel extremely welcome. We hope that all families had a wonderful festive season and holiday time. We look forward to a busy, productive and enjoyable year, full of quality learning, performing arts, sports and cultural activities. Our school certainly looks different from when most of you saw it last. you how they are using the new learning spaces and what they mean for your child’s learning. Staff News This year we welcome some new staff to Rainbow Street Public School. Miss Christie Adams is a new Assistant Principal. Christie gained the position through the merit selection process undertaken late last year. She joins us from Auburn West Public School. Christie has taught in a future-focused learning classroom and brings a wealth of knowledge in the area along with many other strengths. Miss Bella Ciantar was successful in gaining a permanent School Learning Support Officer position through merit selection. Many of you already know Bella as she has been with us in a casual capacity for the last year. Miss Rachel Meldrum (nee Petherbridge) and Miss Meghan Loader join us as classroom teachers in the Support Unit following an EOI process. Rachel worked casually at Rainbow Street PS last year and Meghan comes highly recommended by her previous school. We also welcome back Mrs Rebekah Engles and Miss Laura Hagan who are both returning part-time from maternity leave. Kiss and Drop A Kiss and Drop/Ride Zones has been installed at the front of the school on Rainbow Street. This is designed for your convenience and for your child’s safety. Designed for quick entry and exit, these zones minimise congestion and risk when used properly by all parents and carers. The zone operates under the same conditions as no parking zones, which means you may stop to drop off or pick up children for a maximum of 2 minutes. You're required to remain in, or within 3 metres of, your vehicle. Days and hours of operation apply to the Rainbow Street zone. What’s Happening At Rainbow Street? Our students have settled quickly into school - thanks to the fabulous efforts of staff and parents. Kindergarten Best Start assessments are underway and teachers have begun entering data. Kindergarten parents will receive their child’s report in Week 8. Next week we have the first P & C Meeting for the year and we hope to see lots of you there. The

meeting is at 6pm in the Library, enter through the main entrance on Rainbow Street. The Library is the large building on your left.

School Communication We have three primary ways of communicating information to our school community: this newsletter, the Rainbow Rambler; the School Stream app and the school website www.rainbowst-p.schools.nsw.edu.au The Rainbow Rambler is published each Friday and copies emailed to families. If your email address has changed, please notify the Office so that we can ensure that the Rainbow Rambler is sent to the correct address. The Rainbow Rambler is also available for download from the school website or through the School Stream app. How To Get The School Stream App On Your Mobile Device

1. From your mobile device go to the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Play Store (Android), search for School Stream and download the app to your phone.

2. Make sure you agree to push notifications. 3 . Once School Stream has finished installing,

open the app, type your school name into the search then select your school.

For more detailed instructions go to www.schoolstream.com.au/download At times, notes may be sent home with your child (so please regularly check their bag). The school P & C also has a website http://www.rainbowstpandc.org.au/ and a mailing list that you can subscribe to. TRAC, The Rainbow Activity Centre (before and after school care) also has a website http://tracrandwick.com.au/ Make sure you keep up to date with everything that is happening! Classes 2019 Students have been placed in class groups. Many factors were taken into account when forming classes and teachers spent a great deal of time and care in this process. Please note that staffing and the class structure will not be finalised until the end of Week 3. We need to

Change Of Details If you have changed your address, telephone number(s), emergency contacts and/or email address during the holiday period, please notify the Office. It is very important we have up to date information should we need to contact you about your child. If your child’s medical support needs have changed, please notify the Office. If custody or access rights to do with your child have changed, please notify the Office. Accurate information ensures that we can support you and your child. School Times A reminder that lessons commence at 9am each morning. We ask that students arrive after 8:30am as there is no supervision until 8:30am. If you need to bring your child to school earlier than 8:30am, please contact TRAC, our before and after school care facility. Lessons finish at 3pm, please collect your child promptly from the playground. For safety reasons, please do not arrange to meet your child in Paine Reserve – some children have been there unsupervised until 4.30pm in the afternoon! It is vital students are at school by 9am every day to maximise learning. The first part of the day is both a time when teachers explain learning intentions for the day and peak concentration time. If you are finding that you have already been running a little late, please leave home earlier, particularly on wet days.

Nuts We would like to remind all parents that we have a number of students at Rainbow Street PS who have severe allergies.

Contact with the food(s) they are allergic to leads to an anaphylactic reaction which is life threatening. Children’s throats swell and they are unable to breathe. Please do not bring to school any:

Nuts, for example, peanuts, brazil nuts, hazelnuts, cashews, almonds, walnuts etc.;

Nutella, peanut butter or other spreads made from nuts;

Sport News Swimming Carnival

Our annual Swimming Carnival is being held on Monday 11 February 2019 at Des Renford Aquatic Centre, corner Robey Street & Jersey Road, Maroubra. All students in Years 3 – 6 will be attending the school event as part of their Personal Development/Health/ Physical Education learning. All races will be 50 metres, meaning one lap of the 50 metre outdoor pool. Year 2 students who turn 8 in 2019 (i.e. born in 2011) may attend only if they are able to swim 50m with correct freestyle, backstroke or breaststroke technique. Year 2 students who cannot confidently swim 50m with correct technique should not attend. It is important to note that in keeping with ESPSSA Zone and District Carnivals, all events are 50m (one lap of the 50m outdoor pool) and your child should be able to confidently swim this distance before entering into a race. There will be no 25m races. Students who do not demonstrate correct technique will not be entered into the zone carnival regardless of where they place in their event. Please look out for the permission note that will soon be coming home with your child with further details including times, cost and what to bring. Ms Emma Hunt & Mrs Rebecca Ross Swimming Carnival Coordinators PSSA Sport Trials In Summer our school participates in AFL (boys and girls) and T-ball/softball (girls). two weeks. The first round of the PSSA competition is on Friday 22 February 2019.

From The Library… Library Monitor Leadership Roles Library Monitor leadership roles are very

important in the smooth running of our library at Rainbow Street Public School. Library monitor roles allow Year 4 and 5 students to assist the Teacher Librarian in the day-to-day running of our school library. Library monitors work as a team - helping people using the library, shelving books, tidying the library, promoting the library and books. They must be willing to do their rostered library duties. Library monitors are people who are reliable, careful, friendly, hard-working, love books, like helping people, happy to use computers, good at alphabetical and numerical order, able to work without supervision, and good listeners and communicators. Library monitors learn information service skills. They have chances to take responsibility and preview new books. Their acts of service are very much appreciated by teachers and students. In Week 2 (next week), Year 4 and 5 students can be nominated if they fulfil the general school leadership criteria. In addition, they must:

Hold a general knowledge and understanding of the organisation and role of the library;

Show an awareness of the required behaviour and time dedication involved;

Wear full school uniform at all times;

Show willingness to assist at all times in the library;

Be a positive role model for other students in the classroom, library, playground and when representing the school; and

Model appropriate use of technology including the internet and library resources.

A meeting for interested students will be held in Week 2. The roles and responsibilities of a Library Monitor will be discussed during this meeting before application forms are handed out. All application forms must be submitted to Mrs Soo by Thursday 14 February. If you have any questions regarding the library monitor role, please don’t hesitate to speak to Mrs Soo. 2019 Welcome Welcome to our new school. As you can see, it’s mostly complete. In case you didn’t take one of the sleek two-sided colour brochures from the NSW DET staff at our campus, please go to http://schoolinfrastructure.nsw.gov.au Ongoing progress report from Miss Sayers in these very pages too. Next Meeting Is very soon - Monday 5 February 2019 in the school Library from 6 to 8pm. Free childcare for parents attending at TRAC for children aged three and above. Please book by today: [email protected] All memberships expired after last year’s Annual General Meeting, please bring your $2.00 for membership. Parent Representatives Before our first “Meet the Parents” night, 12 February 2019, please consider volunteering to be a Class Parent representative for your child’s class. You don’t have to be an active P & C member. Isabel — one of our Vice Presidents — co-ordinates the volunteers, distributing material via email which you can enhance with class-specific items from your class teacher. We’re working on a clear guide-line (common-sense rules to keep messages ethical and focused) that should make this role even easier. Exiting Year Ahead Our new P & C Executive is full of great ideas and is raring to go! I met with them today, and can vouch for

this. Please expect improvements to our website, plus more timely action re social, educational and fundraising activities for our school community. See you at school, Greg./ Gregory Dodwell Rainbow Street PS P&C President. [email protected] https://www.rainbowstpandc.org.au/
