Year 7 and Year 8 had an amazing time at Burrendong Sport and Rec Camp during Week 5.

We climbed the rock wall, navigated the high ropes course, sped down the giant slip-n-slide and learnt how to grass ski. We made rafts and swam in the pool.

We enjoyed each other’s company and worked in teams to solve problems and complete challenges.

We also learnt that it is important to live our lives “in tune with Jesus,“ are were reminded to read our bibles and listen to God so that we know how to live lives that are truly in tune with God.

Moomba News

Months of preparation has all been worth it for the students of Parkes Christian School after a winning weekend at the Moomba Birdman Rally in Melbourne.

This year saw another spectacular flight and a win in the newly formed schools category with a flight distance of 10 metres. The school has competed in the Moomba Birdman Rally for the last three years and won the competition in 2017.

On the day they had to work together as a team to reconstruct their design and assess weather conditions for a successful jump. This year the pilot for “Double Trouble” was Year 12 student Jesse Magill whose love of flying made him passionate to see success.

“While standing on the platform I had to rely on the whole team to ensure I was safely secured and we were ready,” Jesse said. “As I was strapped in the wind picked up but I knew that we had to go in that moment. I relaxed and remembered our plan. It all went so quick, the next thing I knew I was sitting in the boat heading for shore.”

Jesse’s last words before the leap - “See you on the other side!”

One giant leap at Moomba

March 14 (or 3.14 in the American format) of each year is “Pi Day”, celebrating the odd mathematical quirk that is pi - 3.14. Parkes Christian School takes part in Pi Day celebrations each year, and this year saw a record number of students taking part in the activities.

There were a range of impressive pies baked by students and staff with each house represented by primary, high school and staff. There were prizes given for the best tasting pie along with the best decorated.

Mr Westcott controversially won the pie eating competition over Mr Brown, while Angelique Bland was able to recite pi to an amzing 134 decimal places, just edging out Talesha Ellis and Mrs Nunn, who was the best teacher on the day.

Our Year 9/10 Elective Visual Arts class and our Year 12 Visual Arts students had the amazing privilege of completing a one day workshop with Cowra Artist, Glenn Morton. Our students spent time drawing and taking photographs while receiving valuable feedback and encouragement from Glenn. Our students enjoyed viewing Glenn’s work and were inspired to practise their skills and continue to work to achieve their artistic goals.

Our students were able to watch Glenn at work as he painted and shared some pointers about choices of colour. He has a way of making chickens come to life with few quick strokes of the brush! Inspirational! Ella Richards was awarded this painting of chickens as a reward for the drawings she completed during the workshop. Well done Ella! Jessica Weber and Luke Dixon also received commendations for their work on the day, completing a range of beautifully crafted drawings. Mitchell Applebee received a commendation for his efforts with the camera! He demonstrated his wonderful eye for the perfect shot!. Our students left Glenn’s workshop inspired to further explore their artistic potential. We were all so grateful for Glenn and Fiona’s hospitality. Opportunities like these are incredibly valuable to our students.

Primary What’s On in Primary Week 8

Tuesday 19 March

• AIS Literacy consultant will be observing the wonderful teachers of PCS and ensuring the best educational practice is being delivered.

Friday 22 March

• Primary Assembly at 2.20pm.

Kindergarten and new students to PCS will be presented Bibles from the school during the Primary assembly. K-2 will be performing at the Assembly also.

All families are welcome to attend.

Year 6 leaders have demonstrated an outstanding job within Primary, both in the classrooms and playground.

It is wonderful to see the leadership qualities of honesty, encouragement and serving others by the Year 6 leaders.

Captains and vice-captains demonstrated excellent manners last week when welcoming and ushering staff from other schools to the hall for an NCCD meeting.

The House Captains have daily served the Primary students in handing out and collecting sporting equipment during lunchtime.

All Year 6 students continue to demonstrate the capable young people they are becoming in their application to lessons or opportunities available to them, such as on the worship team.

Well done Year 6!

Shire Library Dates

Thursday 4 April (Week 10)

Last week Year 3 were excited to have Year 10 spend some time with them as part of Year 10’s Biblical Studies programme.

Year 10 spent some time chatting and reading with Year 3.

Earlier in the year, Year 10 read through a booklet ‘Who Will Be King?’ which talks about how important it is to have Jesus Christ as the foundation of our lives. Year 10 enjoyed reading through this booklet with Year 3 and sharing this important message with them.

Maths is Fun #8Disharmony of the spheres

One of the twelve otherwise identical balls has a weight different from that of the others.

You have just three weighings on a balance to discover which one is different and whether it is heavier or lighter than the others.

Hint: Specify whether each ball could be heavy or light. You need the maximum possible information from each weighing, whatever the result.

The answer to Maths is Fun #7

Remember there is a reward for sending in a complete solution to these questions.

Email your solution to Mr Quince for the chance to win!
