We are here for a purpose and whilst we are present on earth, which is just, in essence, a universal millisecond, we are called to make a difference. In our community, we call our people to make a positive difference. Therefore we focus on the good outcomes of hard work, on the positive effects of change; and work through the challenges that are a necessary part of the constant evolution of all our lives, and particularly our focus – school and the provision of catholic education for the young people of Whyalla. This past Sunday, parishioners met to discuss the possibilities of the utilisation of our primary school sites when we eventually vacate them. There were some energising ideas that are ripe for strategic planning, for how the OLHC church and school campus can be put to good use to serve the needs of the Whyalla community. All of this will take time, as will the consultation, design and planning phase of the new primary campus on Wilsdon Street. But the community can be reassured that all sites will be well looked after and that time will allow for such planning and actions to emerge. From the school’s perspective, we have been developing Q & A documents for the parent community (anticipating some and receiving other preliminary questions), and we hope this will help with current dialogue and the burgeoning inquiries. Please be assured that we have been working on the acquisition of the site for a number of years so have had plenty of time to imagine, research, consult with local and state government – thus essentially do our homework. Preliminary site surveys which addressed infrastructure and public works needs were all part of that homework. The next phase is consultation and the development of a planning committee which will have our Board, CESA, Diocesan, Parish and parent and school leader stakeholder representation. Please send any questions to [email protected] Following the provision of the first and subsequent Q & A papers (in next week's Newsletter) and the initial stakeholder meeting early Term 2, we will then run an open parent meeting to keep you informed of the plans as they emerge. “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 9:1-41 COLLEGE BOARD We wish to thank our Board and interested parents for their recent involvement in the College AGM, nominations and acceptance and acknowledge the following: Parent Reps: Peter Fitzgerald (chairperson) Janine Hugo Irene Adair Gregg Utting Paul Whitehouse Qiang Chen (casual member until next AGM)) Parish Rep: Bernie Meixner P & F Rep: Wayne Foran (deputy chair) Staff Rep: Natasha Free Fr Jim Monaghan (President) Damien Judd & Terissa Shepherd (Co-Principals) Co-opted members: Terry Costello (Business Manager) John Lyons & Lou Whitehouse (Deputy Principals) Karen McGinnis (Board secretary)

Parish NewsWe are halfway through the lenten season with our catechumens continuing their journey towards Easter and Initiation into the church with great enthusiasm. For the RcIA team and sponsors it is proving to be a time of renewal for ourselves as well as learning bits and pieces previously unknown as “long term catholics”.

As part of lent, the parish has taken up the suggestion from Bishop Greg to spend five minutes each day reading and pondering a scriptural reading. This has proved to be very popular. A booklet of these short readings is provided at Mass each Sunday. Extra copies are available at the rear of the church or from the Parish office should you wish to take one home.

currently the Good News newsletter is being distributed to homes. It contains information about the parish as well as the times and locations for Reconciliation, Stations of the cross and Masses during Holy Week and Easter.

The State school workshop will be held at our lady’s on Monday, March 31 from 4pm until 7pm. The theme will be Stations of the cross. This is a popular event for State school children. Please let any families know about this afternoon so their children may attend. contact the Parish office on 8645 8023 for further information.

As a result of the purchase of land for the building of a new primary school, an open Meeting was held on Sunday for all parishioners to inform them of recent developments and to answer any questions they had. Parishioners were reassured that both churches will continue to celebrate the Eucharist. A Future Directions Team has been formed

to begin the planning process for use of the olHc and St Teresa’s campus sites. It is perceived that olHcc site has great strategic value for furthering pastoral work within the Parish. Suggestions for possible use include expansion of St Vincent de Paul as a Family centre, Fred’s Van, relocation of the Parish office to the present school office, Boys Town, and Frederick ozanam Housing Association. Planning for the future of St Teresa’s Primary campus site and Samaritan House will also be necessary. Parishioners were asked to offer their suggestions for usage of the sites. At this meeting a team was formed to look at possible uses for Samaritan House.

It was decided that regular meetings will be held as further information becomes available. The people who attended this meeting were parishioners who have lived in Whyalla for a long time. It would be very useful if new and young parishioners could attend these meetings as the decisions made will be affecting them in the future. As many parishioners have come from other parishes they may have ideas that could be incorporated into the future plans. We encourage as many people as possible to attend the next meeting.

I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will have the light of life. (John 8: 12)

In John’s Gospel Jesus heals a blind man by putting mud on his eyes and then telling him to go and wash in the Pool of Siloam. After doing this the blind man can see for the first time in his life.

In Jesus’ time blindness and other illnesses were seen as punishments for sins and those who suffered illness or disability were considered sinners and not worth saving.

After the man had his sight restored to him he begins to see Jesus in a different light. He is questioned by those around him, his friends and the Pharisees, the ones who know the laws. The man simply stumbles along with his answers, doing his best with his limited knowledge of Jesus. But the more he is attacked, the deeper he seems to grow in his understanding of Jesus.

In what ways have your eyes been opened?

What do you see now that you did not see before?

What have been moments of enlightenment for you?

Although Jesus was not with the man when he was being questioned, Jesus was not absent in the story, nor is he absent from our own story today. Jesus is at the centre of

all the controversy, the questions, and the insults that the healed man is experiencing. He is giving witness to the work of God that Jesus had done. His witness is at times weak, incomplete, inadequate, but it is growing. And in the end, when he is kicked out by the Pharisees, Jesus finds him and leads him to a fuller understanding. Jesus does not abandon him. The blind man receives his sight, a miracle in the physical realm. But much more significantly, his spiritual eyes are opened and his darkness turns to light as he sees Jesus and says, "lord, I believe."

As we continue on our lenten journey towards Easter we are reminded that Jesus is reaching out to us with love, compassion and forgiveness. It is this acceptance and love which allows our repentance and ability to change.

Step out into the light and let Jesus shine on you. It might burn you. It might dazzle you. But the colours will be crisp, and the sights will be glorious. Wash the mud from your eyelids. And you will see what christ means when he says, "I am the light of the World".

PriMarY CaMPUs News

As a school community we are very aware of our responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for all students. With this in mind I ask all parents to remember that staff are on duty in the yard from 8:30 each morning. Students who are at school before this time are unsupervised.

pARENT INTERVIEWS

The primary campuses will be conducting Parent/Teacher Interviews next week; your time preferences should have been confirmed by your child’s teacher. The parent/teacher relationship is so important and further to this it is imperative for children to see and hear that parents and teachers are on the same page with regards to academic progress, social interactions and behaviour.

BIKES IN THE pRIMARY CAMpuSES

It is great to see the bike racks being used, however many are left unlocked and the college is put in a very difficult situation in trying to assist students if property is stolen.

A reminder that both bike and scooter riders are required to wear helmets, that are fastened firmly and that their bikes/schooters should be walked into and out of the school yards.

Thank you for your assistance.

REpORTS AND INTERVIEWS

Teachers are currently checking and editing reports which are due to be distributed on Friday, April 4. Students in Years 8-11 are given grades ranging from A to E. Indicators and comments, at Year 11, are provided to shed some light on the strength of an individual's grade within the subject. Teachers will be available on Tuesday, April 8 and Wednesday, April 9 from 3:30-6:30pm for parent/Teacher Discussions. Parents should have received, with this newsletter, an A5 page on which interview times can be confirmed. I encourage parents and students to promptly engage with teachers to schedule times that are convenient.

lAST WEEK OF TERM

There have been some alterations to the timetable in the last week of Term 1. The Monday and Friday schedules have been swapped to facilitate guest speakers who are presenting information to some of our Year 12 classes. our Easter liturgy will take place on Thursday which will be an order of Time c, and similarly on the last day of term we will have an order of Time c to enable an assembly and clean-up before students are dismissed at 12:30pm. Students will be provided with more information about these changes. Although there is an earlier finish on the Friday, teachers are expecting their full classes.

STuDENT ATTENDANCE

We understand that throughout the year students succumb to different ailments and require time away from school to recuperate. It is equally important at school, as in the work force, that a student's whereabouts is provided, in this case by the parents. Unfortunately there have been a large number of unexplained absences from school; could parents please use the diary to provide a note when your child is absent. To provide more immediate information there is a dedicated mobile phone for text messages only at the secondary campus, the number is 0488 626 818.

YEAR 10 plp

The Year 10 cohort will listen to a variety of presenters with different modes of presentation this year as part of their PlP journey. our first five guest speakers will focus on the five SAcE capabilities namely work, learning, communication, personal development and citizenship.

Alison Hams, Mark Tempany (Stormfront Productions) and Jeremy Head (Smith family) addressed the cohort on Tuesday, sharing their experiences within the citizenship domain. I am hoping that the students take their comments on board and make it their own, not only incorporating it in their first SAcE task but also reviewing this in the light of goal setting, which will happen in Term 2.

As a compulsory aspect of the SAcE, the Personal learning Plan plays an important part in the path to self discovery for our young adolescents. I would like to present parents with a glimpse of our first term by displaying some of the cohort's work during the Week 11 parent/Teacher Night - this static display will be 'open for inspection' in the cBc area - why not have a look in-between meetings?
