Franchione led the Bobcats to a 7-5 record last season despite putting in newoffensiveanddefensivesystems.HeconvertedTexasState’soffensetoanup-tempoattackthatresultedinRobertLowebecomingtheschool’sfirst1,000-yardrusherinfiveseasons,TylerJonesdevelopingintothemostaccuratepasser in school history and Texas State ranking among the top four mostimprovedoffensesinthenation.

HealsoaddedanewdefensivecoordinatortohisstaffandTexasState produced a Fourth-Team All-American linebacker and Sun BeltConferenceDefensivePlayeroftheYearandapairofNFL Draft picks.

Franchione entered the 2015 campaign looking to build on last season’s success by leading the Bobcats to their

second-straight winning season, a feat that Texas State has ac-complished just one other time since he led the school to back to back

winning seasons in 1990 and 1991. He returned to Texas State in 2011 and began the process of lead-

ingtheBobcatsintheirtransitiontotheNCAADivisionIFootballBowlSubdivision(FBS).Duringhisfirstfourseasons,heledtheBobcatsto23winsandatleastsixwinsinthreeseasonsduringthatspan.FranchioneisoneofjustfouractiveNCAADivisionIFBScoachesandoneofjust18FBScoachesall-timetorecord211careervictories.

He began his head-coaching career at Southwestern College in 1981, and compiled a 14-4-2 record in two seasons. The Buildersalsowonaconferencechampionshipandhadavictoryinthe1982SunflowerBowl.Followingtherecord-settingseason,FranchionewastheoffensivecoordinatoratTennesseeTechfortwoseasonsbeforebeingnamedheadcoachathis alma mater, Pittsburg State.

Duringthenextfiveseasons,heledtheGorillastoa53-6recordandfiveconferencetitleswithacombined37-1confer-ence record before being named head coach at Texas State in 1990. He led the Bobcats to a combined 13-9 record in the next twoyearsastheBobcatspostedback-to-backwinningrecordsforthefirsttimeintheDivisionIFCSranks.

BRAD FRANCHIONE TAKES OVER DEFENSEFollowing Texas State’s last game at Houston,

Dennis Franchione announced that John Thompson madethedecision toresignasdefensivecoordinatorandthatBradFranchionewouldtakeoverastheinterimdefensivecoordinator.

Brad Franchione has served as linebackerscoach and special teams coordinator since coming to Texas State in 2011. He also was the head coach at Blinn College from 2006-10 when the Buccaneers won a pair of NJCAA national championships and were ranked among the Top 10 teams three other times. He began his career as a student coach with the second-ary at New Mexico and has been coaching defense in variouscapacitiesat ArkansasState,FortScottCol-lege,EastCentral,WestAlabama,TennesseeMartin,BaconeCollegeandTexasA&MCommerceduringhiscareer.

BOBCATS SEEK SECOND WIN AT UL LAFAYETTE

Texas State is looking for its second win of the seasonwhentheBobcatstraveltoULLafayetteinitsSun Belt Conference opening game on Saturday at Cajun Field.

The Bobcats enter the game with a 1-3 record after falling 56-50 against Southern Miss and 59-14 at Houston. The Bobcats opened the season with a 59-16 loss at No. 10-ranked Florida State and defeated Prairie ViewA&M,63-24,onSept.12.

TEXAS STATE IN ROAD GAMESTexasState also is looking towin its first road

game this season following the losses at Houston and No. 10 Florida State.

The Bobcats enter the UL Lafayette with a 0-2 record in road games this season after posting a 4-2 record in road games in 2014. Three of the four road victories came against Sun Belt Conference games,marking the third time the Bobcats won three confer-ence road games in the last 31 years.

108 SEASONS OF BOBCAT FOOTBALLTexas State is in its 108th season in 2015 and

enters the UL Lafayette game with an all-time record of 504-424-26 since 1919.

The Bobcats began playing football in 1904 when they posted a 5-1 record. Texas State did not play foot-ballin1942,1945and1946.TheBobcatshavewon13conference championships during their history.

THIRD YEAR IN SUN BELT Texas State is in its third season as a member of

BALANCED RECEIVING CORPS Texas State enters the UL Lafayette contest with

15differentplayerscatchingapassthisseason.Inad-dition to Jafus Gaines, C. J. Best also has caught 17 passes for 152 yards this season. An applied sociology and communications major, Best had three catches for 35 yards at Houston after recording eight receptions for 74 yards against Southern Miss.

Demun Mercer is third on the team with 14 catch-es for 203 yards and leads the Bobcats with two TD receptions. His two touchdowns came against Southern Miss when he caught three passes for 72 yards. Mercer, who is majoring in concrete industrial management, had six receptions for a team-best 71 yards at Houston.

Brandon Smith has nine catches in the past three games for 137 yards and a touchdown. A geography major at Texas State, he registered three catches for 14 yards at Houston after catching four passes for 24 yards against Southern Miss. He also had a pair of receptions for99yardsandatouchdownagainstPrairieViewA&M.His 65-yard TD catch against the Panthers is the longest reception by a Bobcat this season.

Response to how the defense has responded this week with the changes in staff.Couldn’thaveaskedforanybetterofaresponse.Theguyshaveboughtinandworkedhard.Theywanttodobetterandit’simportanttothem.Thechangeswe’vemade as far as schematically are subtle. The biggest changes are more intangible things that needed to change. Techniques and things like that. The account-abilityanddisciplinehasbeengood.Theyguyshaveworked hard. How has the team responded during the bye week?Good, we had three good days of work. Now we will be ingameplanpreparation.WhenIstartedtheyearwithanopendate,thenagame,thenanopendate,Iwasn’ttoo excited about that. Now, with where we are at, things wearedoing,Ithinkthetwoopenweekswillworktoourbenefit. On UL Lafayette’s physical natureIdon’tthinkthereisanydoubtaboutthat.They’realwaysbig,they’realwaysstrong.They’vealwaysbeenone the most talented, if not the most talented team in theleague.They’rehavingafewissuesrightnowbutat this time last year they were 1-3 and we were 2-2. Notalothaschanged.Theyarestillverytalentedandstillhavealotofbigguys.Wehaven’tbeenmuchofa speed bump to them in the past couple of years so hopefully we’re going to play them better.

TEXAS STATE’S FOOTBALL TRADITION

•TexasStateentersthe2015seasonhavingwontwonationalchampionshipsand 14 conference championships. The Bobcats were the 1981 and 1982 NCAADivisionIInationalchampionsunderthelateJimWacker.Wackerposteda 42-8 record as Texas State’s head coach from 1979-82 and was named the 1982CollegeDivisionCoachoftheYearbytheAFCAafterleadingtheBobcatsto a 14-0 record from 1998-01. He passed away on Aug. 26, 2003 after battling cancer.

• Texas State is a member of the Sun Belt Conference for the third straight sea-son in 2015. The Sun Belt is the sixth athletic conference in which the Bobcats havebeenmembers.TexasStatewasamemberoftheTexasIntercollegiateAthletic Association in the 1920s, the Lone Star Conference from 1931-83, the Gulf Star Conference in 1984-86, the Southland Conference in 1987-2010, the WACin2012andSunBeltConferenceforthefirsttimein2013.

•ThreemembersofTexasState’scurrent football staffpreviouslycoachedatthe school before returning in 2011. Dennis Franchione also was head coach fortheBobcatsin1990-91.Assistantheadcoach/co-offensivecoordinatorandquarterbackscoachMikeSchultzwasthesecondarycoachandrecruitingcoor-dinatorunderFranchionein1990-91.DefensivelinecoachMikeHudsonwasastudent and graduate assistant from 1987-89, linebackers coach from 1995-00 anddefensivecoordinatorin2001-02.

•Dennis Franchione and his son,Brad,who serves asTexasState’s specialteamscoordinatorandlinebackerscoach,havethedistinctionofbeingtheonlyfather and son head coaching combination to produce the top two picks in an NFL Draft when Cam Newton and Von Miller were the top two selections in the2011NFLDraft.FranchionecoachedMilleratTexasA&Mwhilehisson,Brad, coached Newton at Blinn College in 2009 before Newton went on to lead Auburn to the 2010 BCS national championship.
