CARING COMPANIONS
We are looking for help for our senior citi-
zens! We are looking to start a new group
where we can have senior citizens visit other
senior citizens who are homebound. This is
not to bring them communion. Instead, once a
week, members will visit a different person to
sit with and have a conversation, maybe even
a cup of coffee. This will be a great way for
some of our homebound seniors to make new
friends, by having different people visit them
each week. If you are interested in becoming
one of our Caring Companions, please call the
rectory.
Stress in Your Marriage!
Do you feel lost,
alone or bored in your marriage?
Are you frustrated,
hurt or angry with your spouse?
Are you constantly fighting?
Or, do you simply shut down?
Have you thought about
separation or divorce?
Does talking about it
only make it worse?
…Retrouvaille is a Lifeline to Help
Couples Heal and Renew their Marriages. The
program consists of a weekend ex-
perience for married couples (no group dis-
cussions) with six follow-up sessions.

THE FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY
He went down with them and came to
Nazareth, and was obedient to
them; and his mother kept all these
things in her heart. And Jesus ad-
vanced [in] wisdom and age and favor
before God and man. Luke 2:51-52
(Year C)
On this, the Sunday within the Octave of
Christmas, we honor the Holy Family of
Jesus, Mary and Joseph. In honoring
them, we also honor all families, big or
small. And in honoring all families, we
honor the family of God, the Church. But
most especially, we focus in on the hid-
den, day-to-day life of the Holy Family of
Nazareth.
What was it like to live day in and day out
in the household of St. Joseph? What was
it like to have Jesus for a son, Mary as a
wife and mother, and Joseph as a father
and husband? Their home would have
certainly been a sacred place and a dwell-
ing of true peace and unity. But it would
have also been so much more.
The family home of Jesus, Mary and Jo-
seph would have been, in numerous ways,
just like any other home. They would
have related together, talked, had fun, dis-
agreed, worked, eaten, dealt with prob-
lems, and encountered everything else that
makes up daily family life.
Of course, the virtues of Jesus and Mary
were perfect, and St. Joseph was a truly
“just man.” Therefore, the overriding
characteristic of their home would have
been love.
But with that said, their family would not
have been exempt from daily toil, hurt and
challenges that face most families. For ex-
ample, they would have encountered the
death of loved ones, St. Joseph most likely
passed away prior to Jesus’ public minis-
try. They would have encountered misun-
derstanding and gossip from others. Our
Blessed Mother, for example, was found
with child out of wedlock. This would have
been a topic of discussion among many ac-
quaintances for sure. They would have had
to fulfill all daily chores, earn a living, put
food on the table, attend gatherings of fami-
ly and friends and the like. They would
have lived normal family life in every way.
This is significant because it reveals God’s
love for family life. The Father allowed His
Divine Son to live this life and, as a result,
elevated family life to a place within the
Trinity. The holiness of the Holy Family re-
veals to us that every family is invited to
share in God’s divine life and to encounter
ordinary daily life with grace and virtue.
Reflect, today, upon your own family
life. Some families are strong in virtue,
some struggle with basic communica-
tion. Some are faithful day in and day out,
some are broken and deeply wounded. No
matter the case, know that God wants to en-
ter more deeply into your family life just as
it is right now. He desires to give you
strength and virtue to live as the Holy Fami-
ly. Surrender yourself and your family, this
day, and invite the Triune God to make your
family a holy family.

NEW BULLETIN DESIGN
If you are reading this page of the Bulle-
tin you may have already realized that we
have expanded the size of our publication
and will now have the ability to provide
our bulletin readers additional infor-
mation regarding parish and community
events. More changes will be coming
soon as we continually try to improve our
publication.
CALLING ALL PARISH GROUPS
We would like to request that a repre-
sentative from each Parish Group begin
an open line of communication with the
bulletin director for upcoming additions
to the bulletin and envelopes. Please have
one member of your group email hfbulle-
[email protected]. Thank you for your
assistance and all the work that your
groups do for the parish.
HAVE YOU
CONSIDERED JOINING?
THE PRAYER SHAWL GROUP
The Prayer Shawl Group
meets weekly to knit and
crochet items for those
who are in need of Love,
Comfort and Prayer.
They meet on Wednes-
days from 10:00-12:00
PM in the School.
SPONSOR CERTIFICATES
Sponsor Certificates are
signed and sealed docu-
ments attesting to the
fact that you are a prac-
ticing Catholic (going
to Mass every week and
living the Catholic
faith). A Sponsor Cer-
tificate is required if
you are being asked to
be a sponsor for Confir-
mation or a godparent
for Baptism. Please do
not be offended if you
can not receive a Spon-
sor Certificate because
you are not living up to
the requirements of be-
coming a sponsor.
FLU SEASON
For those parishioners who don’t wish to
shake hands at Mass during the flu season,
the Church allows for some other gestures
such as a wave or a nod during the sign of
peace as well as the Our Father. Addition-
ally, in order to avoid getting the flu, you
should wash your hands frequently, cough
into your arm (not hands) and if possible,
get the flu shot. We must all be cautious in
our daily interactions so that Holy Family
can be a Healthy Family.

On Avarice
by Saint John Vianney
Avarice is an inordinate love of the goods
of this world.
Yes, my children, it is an ill-regulated
love, a fatal love, which makes us forget the
good God, prayer, the Sacraments, that we may
love the goods of this world--gold and silver
and lands. The avaricious man is like a pig,
which seeks its food in the mud, without caring
where it comes from. Stooping towards the
earth, he thinks of nothing but the earth; he no
longer looks towards Heaven, his happiness is
no longer there. The avaricious man does no
good till after his death. See, how greedily he
gathers up wealth, how anxiously he keeps it,
how afflicted he is if he loses it. In the midst of
riches, he does not enjoy them; he is, as it were,
plunged in a river, and is dying of thirst; lying
on a heap of corn, he is dying of hunger; he has
everything, my children, and dares not touch
anything; his gold is a sacred thing to him, he
makes it his divinity, he adores it. . . .
Oh my children! How many there are in
these days who are idolators! How many there
are who think more of making a fortune than of
serving the good God! They steal, they defraud,
they go to law with their neighbor; they do not
even respect the laws of God. They work on
Sundays and holydays: nothing comes amiss to
their greedy and rapacious hands. Good Chris-
tians, my children, do not think of their body,
which must end in corruption; they think only
of their soul, which is immortal. While they are
on the earth, they occupy themselves with their
soul alone. So you see how assiduous they are
at the Offices of the Church, with what fervor
they pray before the good God, how they sanc-
tify the Sunday, how recollected they are at ho-
ly Mass, how happy they are! The days, the
months, the years are nothing to them; they
pass them in loving the good God, with their
eyes fixed on their eternity. . . TBC…
