WelcomeMay 4, 2019
Dear Hall of Fame Honored Guests, Family and Friends:
Thank you for attending Sandusky High School’s 30th Annual Hall of Fame Banquet. Welcome to our school where memories and experiences have shaped the leaders that will be recognized during our program tonight. We are honored that you are here.
Our school district is experiencing a transformation of our academic, athletic, organizational and structural framework and we are extremely excited about our future. As you know, we are in the midst of a $70 million dollar construction program. The progress on our new Intermediate Building next door and on the Ontario site are moving forward accordingly and we will being seeing new buildings take shape over the next few months. Last summer, significant changes were made here at the high school. We renovated our biology, chemistry, and physics laboratories giving our students access to 21st century science experiences. Our Sidney Frohman Planetarium was completely renovated giving us the best high school planetarium in Ohio. Rooms 300 and 301 were renovated and designed to function as college style lecture halls, and we installed new lighting and a new sound system in the auditorium for theater-quality performances. On last year’s Ohio State Report Card, Sandusky High School earned the Momentum Award for growing students academically. We were in the top 5% of high schools in the State of Ohio when it comes to value-added, meaning we are helping more students grow from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. You will observe an unprecedented era for Sandusky City Schools as we build on the foundation that you, your classmates and others have established and carry on the pride, tradition, and excellence of our past.
This year we have rolled out a new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Vision that will help give our students experiences and opportunities like never before. We already have programs and classes that you can’t find in any other school district. For example, we have an Aviation Program where our students are already learning how to fly. Our Great Lakes Visual and Performing Arts Academy gives students the opportunity to explore their art medium with a direct focus, allowing them to grow even more. We’ve even expanded that program providing our Elementary students an after school Jr. Arts Academy program. Our STEAM Vision is going to help drive our efforts to the next level and we couldn’t be more excited.
Thank you to the leadership of our Booster Club, the Hall of Fame Committee, and the countless volunteers who work tirelessly to support our young people. On behalf of myself, and the entire “Blue Streak Family” we would like to congratulate our Hall of Fame Class of 2019 inductees and your families, for the many contributions to our school and our community. Again, thank you for your presence tonight and enjoy your evening. You are welcome to come back and visit anytime. If there are any questions that I can answer for you, please contact me at 419.984.1000 or at [email protected]

The 1982 cross country team started their journey as freshmen with two meets won, at the bottom of results in every invitational and next to last in the Buckeye Conference championship. By their junior year they were undefeated in the Buckeye Conference finishing 10-2 andplaced 10th in AAA at State. With four seniors going into the1982 season they achieved every goal they established, goals that had seemed unattainable just three years prior. Sandusky City Schools has enjoyed a very proud athletic history and the cross country teams of the late 1960s and early 1970s were part of that tradition. However, for almost a decade SHS Cross Country teams were at the bottom of the Buckeye. The 1982 team turned the program around. From that season on, SHS cross country teams won seven consecutive Conference Championships; five in the Buckeye and two Erie Shores. The cross country team lost only one meet to a Buckeye opponent from 1981 through 1987. Additionally, the 1982 cross country team accomplished a 1st Buckeye Conference championship in 11 years. They were 1st at sectionals, 2nd at Districts and 4th at AAA State. Their dual meet record was 11-1. The only defeat was a down-to-the-last-man 3-point loss to Perkins. Perkins would go on to place in the AA State Championship that year.
Head coach Patrick Logue is noted as saying, “As their coach I am most proud of the journey that this core group of runners endured to reach such lofty accomplishments their senior season. I don’t have records for all the athletic teams in Sandusky history but I have to believe few, if any sport, dominated their Conference the way the cross country teams did in the 1980s.”
The 1982 Cross Country team consisting of Geno Kubitz (co-captain), Henry Matthews (co-captain), Jim King, Brian Putnam, Tim Putnam, Curt Rogers, David Skillman, Donnell Alexander, Jim Canterbury, Mark Capucini, Mike Etherington, Joe Gallagher, Keith Good, Brad Kasper, Chad Lucas, Chris Lucas, Joe Smallwood, and Rick Waldock contributed to what Coach Logue believes is “one of the greatest athletic teams to ever walk the halls of Sandusky High School.”
Patrick has lived in Hanover, PA since leaving Sandusky in 1987. He has been married for 41 years to his college sweetheart (who was also his unpaid assistant coach), and they have two boys, Ryan and Sean. He has worked as a Financial Advisor since leaving education. He opened his own branch office for Lincoln Investment in 1994 and serves as Branch Manager as well as managing investments for his own clients. In 2000, he was inducted into the Lincoln Investment Hall of Fame. He is also a Sandusky High School Hall of Fame Coach inductee in the Class of 2012.

An arm injury ended his baseball career and he then worked at the Ford Motor Company – Sandusky Plant and its subsequent companies for 20 years.
Brad was one of the most humble and unassuming teammates and remained that way in his post-athletic years. He meant much to many, some of which have travelled far to be here tonight. Brad and his wife Judy (Lavey) have two lovely daughters, Marley and Hanna. Brad passed away from pancreatic cancer on March 31st, 2018.

The 1988-89 wrestling team (consisting of Fred Chaney, Chris Corso, Kevin Randleman, Tony Johnson, Felix Chaney, Matt Fordham, Jerome Caffey, Darren Dunn, Juan Torres, Scott Lazzara, Tony Moore, Jamie Lazzara, Chad Hunter, Shon Grant, Todd Dickerson, Jason Darden, Phil Capodice and Dan Jeter) had an exceptional season. The team finished an impressive 11-1 in dual meet competition. Their third place finish at the OHSAA State Championships (tying the 1976-77 SHS team for the highest place at the State Tournament) while setting a school record for the most team points at the State Wrestling Championship with 60 points. In addition, this team was the first in school history to qualify for the State Wrestling Dual Meet Championship.
The team was under the guidance of Head Coach Ken Colatruglio, Assistant Coach Richard DeLamatre, and Freshman Coach Terry Wilson. Coach Colatruglio was named Conference Coach of the Year four times, and the Greater Toledo Wrestling Coaches Division I Coach of the Year 1989. He is a member of the Ohio Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Sandusky High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
In their four years these wrestlers produced two individual state champions, three regional champions, 12 sectional champions, and 8 conference champions and numerous invitational champions. This outstanding group was led by State Champions Chris Corso and Kevin Randleman, fifth place finisher Felix Chaney and State Qualifier Jason Darden. During the regular season the team dominated their competition on a regular basis. They were crowned Champions of the St. Mary’s Classic, the prestigious Brecksville Holiday Invitational and were the Champions of the always-tough Eric Shore Conference. When the post-season tournament run began, this group of Blue Streaks once again proved themselves among the elite. They earned a District Championship and a Regional Runner up in the first two tournaments, en route to a possible state championship. Once they arrived in Columbus for the State Championships only then did nationally-ranked Lakewood St. Edward - the eventual state champion - slow them down. The Blue Streak wrestlers were edged out of being state runners-up by a talented team from Cleveland St. Joseph: 69.5 points to 60 points. Other record holders were Felix Chaney, 1988 and 1989 District Champion and Erie Shore Conference Champion, Jason Darden, 1989 Erie Shore Conference Champion and 1989 Sectional Champion, Phil Capodice, 1989 Sectional Champion and Scott Lazzara, Sectional Champion in 1989.
Coach Ken Colatruglio holds degrees from Bowling Green State University and Ashland University. He taught English at SHS from 1968 until he retired in 1997. He served as the English Department Chairman and as Varsity Head Coach from 1983 to 1997. Ken is married to Marge, they have four children, Robert, William, Mary Ann and David.
