Miami City Ballet has turned 30! Over the course of twenty-nine seasons, MCB’s dancers and the repertory we’ve presented have become an essential part of South Florida’s cultural life. For a performing arts organization, the ability to produce high-quality art and be an integral part of one’s home communities for 30 years is a huge accomplishment, and one that we’re very proud of. To accomplish all this, we have needed your devotion and loyalty and that of literally thousands of other individuals like you. Thank you for being there!

Today, we are 50 dancers strong, have performed to critical acclaim all over the country and abroad and are regarded as one of America’s most celebrated and beloved classical ballet companies.

As we embark on this 30th anniversary season, it is our pleasure to continue to present programming with the goal of connecting strongly with you and our communities. While we revere our past, and our programming reflects this, we are also determined to take risks in order to share with you an abundance of exciting new works. There will be four company premieres, including Paul Taylor’s elegiac and haunting Sunset, Peter Martins’ beautiful Barber Violin Concerto and Justin Peck’s critically acclaimed Year of the Rabbit. There will be, as well, revivals of Liam Scarlett’s powerful Viscera, Jerome Robbins’ beloved Fancy Free and George Balanchine’s effervescent Bourrée Fantasque and classical Swan Lake.

The most ambitious project, however, and the centerpiece of our 30th season will be a brand new production of Balanchine’s brilliant full-evening rendering of Shakespeare’s beloved play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. While his thrilling choreography for 81 dancers - including 24 children - set to the glorious music of Felix Mendelssohn (featuring the famous Wedding March) will remain the same, the physical production will be completely reimagined. MCB has commissioned renowned international visual artist and Miami native, Michele Oka Doner, to create new scenic décor and costumes, and another Miami native (and winner of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship “genius grant”), playwright Tarrell Alvin McCraney, to serve as dramaturge. A final gratification for us: when Balanchine transformed Dream into a ballet, in 1962, he created the central role of Oberon on our Founding Artistic Director Edward Villella.

Our 30th is something to celebrate together - company and community - with pride in what we’ve accomplished up to now and joy in what we’ll accomplish together in the future. So, I invite you - who have supported MCB and made it your own - to subscribe today. I promise we will have much to rejoice in together in 2015-2016!

Warmly,

Lourdes Lopez, Artistic Director

Swan Lake is the most famous of all ballets, its name practically synonymous with the art form. Miami City Ballet is excited to be bringing back to our audiences the glorious version of Acts Two and Four – the “white acts” – that George Balanchine created in 1951 for Maria Tallchief and New York City Ballet. More than a tragic romance, it is a timeless meditation on the universal experience of love and loss, set to Tchaikovsky's most evocative score.

Widely considered to be England’s most promising new choreographer, Liam Scarlett honored MCB in 2012 with Viscera, his first commissioned work for an American company. Praised by The New York Times, this impressive debut pushed the lexicon of classical dance forward with its inspired rhythmic timing and intense physicality honed by the crisp precision of Scarlett’s Royal Ballet training.

In Fancy Free, three sailors on 24-hour leave in New York City during World War II meet three girls on a hot summer night in a story that speaks to the quintessential experience of being young, American, and “On The Town” - the name of the hit musical comedy that Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and the team of Comden and Green developed from it.

Choreographed in 1968 and set to Leo Delibes’ exquisite musical score, La Source vividly recreates the elegant milieu of 19th-century French ballet. As an example of Balanchine’s acclaimed “pink ballets,” this charming nostalgic work continues to enchant 21st-century audiences with its subtle beauty and bravura performances.

Two couples - one classical, one modern - engage in a provocative study of choreographic contrast and collision in Peter Martins’ stirring and quirky, Barber Violin Concerto, the excitement of which is enhanced by Samuel Barber’s neo-Romantic Violin Concerto, one of the most melodically alluring and widely performed concertos of the 20th century.

Set to Philip Glass’ driving postmodern score, Twyla Tharp’s signature work, In The Upper Room, deftly fuses seemingly divergent dance esthetics. Modern dance’s forceful energy is juxtaposed with the finesse of the classical tradition, both fiercely surging towards a spectacular climax.

Alluding to the cyclical nature of life, Justin Peck’s acclaimed Year of the Rabbit channels diverse encounters through the corps de ballet in a stunningly architected array of movement. Enhanced by Michael Atkinson’s new orchestration (based on Sufjan Stevens' 2002 electronic album Enjoy Your Rabbit), the work marks a significant artistic milestone as classical ballet transitions into the 21st century.

Profoundly eloquent and deeply affecting, Paul Taylor’s masterpiece Sunset prompted the New York Observer to call it “one of the few great dance works of the past quarter-century.” With moving introspection, the work suggests the complexities of love, camaraderie and the poignancy of separation as experienced by six soldiers and the girls they leave behind. “Delicately presented, achingly sad…I’m always startled to meet people who aren’t moved to tears by it.”

C’est magnifique! One of Balanchine’s most charming works, the ebullient Bourrée Fantasque is set to the sparkling music of Emmanuel Chabrier and alluringly dressed in chic Karinska-inspired costumes. Delightfully melodic, vibrant and comic, this joyful fusion of French style and choreographic dynamism provides pure pleasure.

Ballet meets world-class visual art and groundbreaking dramaturgy. As a celebration of our landmark 30th anniversary season, MCB will present an innovative reimagining of George Balanchine’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Balanchine’s first wholly original full-length ballet crafted in America, A Midsummer Night’s Dream first debuted in 1962 – embodying Shakespeare’s timeless tale of love and magic, reality and illusion.

Balanchine waited nearly 20 years to create this ballet, as he searched earnestly for music that would embody the production he imagined – weaving together Felix Mendelssohn’s Opus 61 of A Midsummer Night’s Dream with other works from the composer’s oeuvre to create the full score.

Join us as we unveil a new interpretation of the Balanchine/Shakespeare/Mendelssohn masterpiece from a perspective that is uniquely Miami. Featuring creative collaboration by two internationally acclaimed artists: Michele Oka Doner for original costumes and sets and Tarell Alvin McCraney for dramatic direction.
