Goal Presentation
As a result of our continuous support to Goal Ireland, Maeve Seery gave a wonderful presentation
to the children about her work as an NGO. Maeve explained how John OShea set up Goal after a
visit to Calcutta. He set up a feeding programme for mothers and children. Members of Goal now
work in fifty developing countries worldwide. Their work includes setting up refugee camps in
Ethiopia, emergency response to the earthquake in Haiti and the floods in Pakistan. Maeve
highlighted that their main priorities are food, shelter, health, education, water and sanitation. The
pictures she showed the children were very graphic. They were extremely interested in what she
had to tell them and came away with a greater understanding of the plight of those in developing
countries.
Our Fourth Green Flag
For the past two years we have been striving to earn the fourth Green Flag for our school. This was the Travel flag.
All pupils in the school had to make an effort to reduce their carbon footprint by choosing to walk or cycle to school
more frequently. Many surveys were conducted to ascertain the increase in the number who walked to school each
day. The children were very enthuastic about the project from the outset. They encouraged each other and the
promise of less homework on a Wednesday night had the desired effect also! All classes did a project on some aspect
of the theme Travel. This all contributed to our success. A formal presentation of the flag took place in the Silver
Springs Hotel in Cork. John Greehy and Kara Walsh represented the Green Schools Team. On Tuesday 19th
June, at
a special ceremony in the school, the new green flag was raised by Anne Fitzgerald, Chairperson of our Board of
Management.

Lismore Fire Brigade
To highlight National Fire Week,
members of the local Fire Brigade
visited the school. They went into
Third and Fourth classes and
spoke to them about the dangers
of fire. They discussed the various
precautions families can take in
order to prevent fires. Thanks to
all the fire officers for their
dedication and interest.
Swimming Lessons
Fourth and Second Classes have
completed a six week swimming
course in Aura Leisure Centre,
Youghal, Co.Cork. The children
have been divided into groups
according to ability. Over the course
of the lessons, all pupils have made
significant progress. We are
delighted with the facilities in Aura
and the quality of the instruction.
Maths Trail in the Millenium Park
The Heritage Centre has devised a
Maths Trail which they intend to
promote next year as part of their
school tour package. Ms. Bucks First
and Second Class were invited to be
involved in a trial of the new material.
They were delighted with its content.
The problems were age appropriate and
they even went into the ice house in
search of mathematical features.
Lismore Branch library
We are very grateful to the staff of the
local library for all the assistance and
support during the year. All teachers
borrow numerous class novels from
the branch and the library are
constantly devising new initiatives to
foster good reading habits among the
children. This is a great support to the
school.
The Towers Trail
In conjunction with the Bealtaine
Festival, Ms Tobins Senior Infants and
First Class enjoyed a tour of the Towers
in Ballysaggartmore. They walked
through the historical woodland where
they explored the world of nature. Many
common trees and plants were identified
as well as a brief history of the Towers.
Thanks to the staff of the Heritage
Centre for this kind invitation.

Senior Infants and First Class went to Fota
Wildlife Park on their school tour. They had a
wonderful time observing all the animals,
reptiles and birds. It is a lovely safe venue for
such a young age group.
Titanic School Tour
First and Second Classes went to Cobh to relive the
Titanic experience. They were given a boarding card
on arrival and at the end of the tour they checked
the list of survivors to find out if the card bearing
that name was one of the survivors. The children
were treated to an audio visual presentation of the
history of the Titanic. Later they enjoyed a boat trip
around Cobh Harbour. They thoroughly enjoyed
their day.

Heritage Park, Wexford.
Third and Fourth Classes went to
Wexford. Here they visited the
Heritage Park where they saw the
houses of early peoples in Ireland.
They were intrigued by the dwellings
and loved to hear the accounts of the
daily lives of those people. The lunch
in the Heritage Park was welcome
after an early start that morning. The
children went bowling in Leisure
Plex before leaving Wexford. This
was the highlight of the day.

Immrama Festival. They saw the historical audio visual and were given a guided
tour of St. Carthages Cathedral.
Drumming Workshops
Thanks to the generosity of the Parents Council, all
the pupils were treated to a fantastic drumming
workshop last week. Eddie ONeill from Drum
Circle Magic conducted a workshop in the drama
room. He presented the children with African
djembes, bongos, frame drums and congas. He
explained the cultural background of these
instruments and the different genres of music they are
associated with. Eddie created an instant rapport with
the children and within five minutes they were relaxed
and willing to follow his instructions. Every child got
an opportunity to play the different drums and other
percussion instruments. By the end of the workshop,
we were all chanting and beating out the various
rhythms It was a fantastic experience.
Knockanore Cheese Farm
Second Class went on a trip to
Knockanore Cheese farm. Here
they were given a guided tour of
the cheese house. All seven
stages in making the cheese
were explained by Eamonn
Lonergan. This was a fantastic
opportunity for the children.

End of Year School Mass
All the staff and pupils attended Mass in St.Carthages Church in Lismore on Wednesday June 20th celebrated by
Father Cullinan. A representative from Third to Sixth class read a prayer of the faithful. Pupils from Junior Infants
to Second Class brought up the offertory gifts and Sixth Class pupils delivered the readings. Fourth Class sang
hymns accompanied by Billy Hogan. It was a lovely ceremony in thanksgiving for a good years work.
2011/2012 has been a very busy year for the Board with the

BOM Report
The Board ratified a number of organisational and curriculum policies during the year. Many of these are available for inspection on our
website.
We were also very pleased with the report issued at the end of our Whole School Evaluation in particular with the recognition of high teaching
standards in the school. This report is available on the Department of Education website.
We would also like to thank our Parents Council for their support for our school community over the last 3 years. Thanks to their support
Bunscoil Bhthar na Naomh has been able to keep abreast with all the changes in technology in Education in recent years.
The Board would also like to congratulate all those involved with attaining our fourth Green Flag a fantastic achievement by all concerned.
Likewise congratulations to all involved in achieving the Science Excellence Award.
Well done also to our athletes, camogie players, hurlers and footballers on their successes during the year.
Parents council The Parents Council would like to thank all the parents and families who have supported and contributed to the various fund raising events held throughout the year. Members of the council have been active in managing and organising the Equipment Fund {weekly collection or once off contribution), the Sponsored Walk, School Calendar the Table Quiz and Santa Sale which have all taken place over the past school year. Thanks to Joan and Mike Houlihan of the Ballyrafter Service Station for providing drinks and snacks for the sponsored walk and to members of the local business community for their generous sponsorship of the School Calendar. Sincere thanks, also to Mary FM who provided school uniforms for pupils in 6
th class for the day of their confirmation. The Parents
Council also recognise the contribution to these events of Eddie Nugent, without whose help many of these events could not take place. The amount raised through these events this year is expected to be around 14000 and will continue to be used for the benefit of all the pupils. This year, for example, the fund has been used to pay for resource materials, servicing of whiteboards, transport costs and special events such as the Red Kettle theatre company and the Magic of Music programme which recently introduced pupils to the world of drumming! Parents Council also funded the presentation on the Rainforest and the six week course in gymnastics for all pupils. This will be the final year for this Council and a new Parents council will be elected in the coming term. We wish all Parents and pupils of Bunscoil Bhthar na Naomh a safe and happy summer break. Boys Primary School Hurling and Football
2011/2012
At the beginning of the school year the boys
primary school panel laid out their aim for the year,
to win back the Blake Cup. Training commenced
immediately with league matches at break, wall ball
in the morning and challenge games nearing
competition time. All this effort in training paid
huge dividends as we coasted through our
preliminary rounds. As the year progressed it
became clear that the battle for the Western title
was going to be between two teams, ourselves and
Abbeyside. Unfortunately for us the year 2011/2012
proved to be Abbeysides, as they progressed to the
county in all competitions.
We would like to thank Mr.Prendergast and
Mr.Smith for all the hard work they put into us with
Hurling and Football this year.
Primary game
Congratulations to both Jeff Howard and Shauna O
Keeffe who were selected to play on the primary
game team in Thurles June 17th.
By Evan McGarry and Elliot Coolbear
Girls Primary School Camogie and
Football
2011/2012
Another school year has come and gone as we wish
to reflect on the sporting year of 2011/2012. Huge
effort was put into the training and preparation of the
team for this years games in both codes. As the year
progressed St Marys of Dungarvan proved to be a
thorn in our side as they successfully ended our quest
in search of Western football/camogie 15a-side title.
However they were not to have it all their own way
with our 7 a side camogie team proving to be far
more superior claiming the Western and County mini
7s title defeating St Marys along the way. We would
like to thank Mr. Smith and Mr. Byrne for their
support over the past year taking us down to the field
each break and doing drills in the hall. We would
also like to thank Mr. Prendergast for his support,
and we hope that once we have left the school that
the others will continue to achieve great standards in
sport.
Primary school development squad
Congratulations to the following girls who qualified
to take part in the u14 primary school development
squad, Becky McGlone, Charlotte Curran, Shauna OKeeffe and Erin Mangan.
Primary Game
Congratulations to Shauna OKeeffe and Jeff
Howard who successfully made it through to be part
of the primary school games who played at half time
in the Waterford /Clare Munster semi final in Thurles
on June 17th
.
Croke Park
Congratulations to Becky McGlone who will be
playing in Croke Park on the 19th
of August 2012.

Au Revoir Clothilde
Clotilde Fitzgibbon has been
teaching French in the school
every Friday for the past ten
years. It all started as a pilot
scheme by the Department of
Education. Unfortunately, due
to cutbacks, this scheme has
been discontinued. All
children in Fifth and Sixth
classes have been introduced
to French by Clotilde. The
language was taught through
games and activities which
they all loved. Clotilde had a
profound influence on pupils,
many choosing French as
their foreign language at
second level and some even
took it as a degree subject in
college. We will remember
Clotilde with great fondness
in Bunscoil Bhthar na
Naomh.
