Housing Development inStonesfieldThe predictions we made at our publicmeeting in March are rapidly becomingtrue. The application for planningpermission for 16 houses at North Farm(on Farley Lane) has been lodged, as hasone by CALA for 68 houses on theWoodstock Road. Pye has had a pre-

planning consultation for what it callsPhase Two of its Charity Farmdevelopment (there had been noindication that the 37 houses already builtwere Phase One), which would allow afurther 17 houses. This brings the totalnumber of new houses applied for to 101.Together with the 50 new houses on theFarley Lane and Charity Farm sites, thetotal number of new houses which couldbe built this/next year is now 151. Weexpect CALA to apply for permission tobuild a Phase Two on theWoodstockRoad, so the story has by no means endedyet.

Is any of this going to help the village?CALA is offering some ‘affordable’ houses.North Farm is offering no affordablehouses, but instead is offering a footballpitch. But we all know that ‘affordable’ isa technical term related to local marketprices; in Oxfordshire, those are too highfor young families even at the ‘affordable’discount. So, in reality, we are simplygetting a very large number of expensivehouses landed on our doorstep.

The impact of this will be huge. Longqueues at theWoodstock Road/Judd’sjunction every rush hour, our roadsclogged with cars from both ends of the

village as people nip out to buy a pint ofmilk, an impossible number of childrenwanting to attend the school and pre-school, even more pressure on oursewerage and water. Worst of all, perhaps,is the violation of the Area of OutstandingNatural Beauty. The CALA developmentwill be particularly offensive, creating avery visible eye-sore on the flat open landapproaching the village. If you want toobject to these planning applications, please go tohttps://publicaccess.westoxon.gov.uk/online-applications. You can lodge a‘comment’ objecting but you have a limitof 6000 characters. Alternatively, you canemail WODC with your own letter, orpost a letter to them.

We have supplied sample text for you touse, covering the main areas ofcontention, on the Stonesfield websiteunder Stonesfield Life/SustainableStonesfield/Reference Documents.

The deadline for objecting to North Farmand Cala Homes is 29 June. We appreciatethat by the time you read this it may betoo late, but if there is even 24 hours left, please send in an objection. It is reallyimportant that as many people as possibleregister some sort of objection, even if it is

Swift CensusOne of the great sounds of summer iswhen the swifts arrive back in the village.Watching them fly at high speed andhearing their screaming calls is a classicsummer experience. However, numbershave fallen by 47% between 1995 and2014 (RSPB figures). The RSPB have setup a swift-recording page and the link ishttps://swiftsurvey.org/Rspb/Home/Indexor just search Swift Survey 2017. It is easyto complete, and will help the RSPB builda picture of how these brilliant birds arefaring in the UK.

Stonesfield Players’ AutumnProductionAlan Ayckbourn is one of our funniestwriters. His plays are much celebrated fortheir devastating portrayal of

embarrassingly awful characters and theimpossibly awkward situations in whichthey find themselves.

Absent Friends is a bitter-sweet and veryfunny play about friendship andrelationships. It makes you cringe, itmakes you laugh, and it’s full of 1970ssideburns and hideous shirts.

We’ll be rehearsing the play throughSeptember, October and November andperforming it on 23, 24 and 25 November.

If you would like to take part, please cometo audition at 8pm on Tuesday 4 July atAustins Farm, High Street (opposite theschool). We’re looking for three men andthree women. Also for help with allaspects of the production: set, props, costume, publicity, lights, sound.

We will supply scripts at the auditions, and there is no need to prepare anything, but it would probably help if you had readthe play and knew which character youmight like to go for.

If you can’t make this date please get intouch as soon as you read this – we’dreally like to hear from you.

The hope is that the number of houseswill be reduced, the lay-out andarchitecture of the CALA developmentimproved, the offers for village amenitiesmade more generous, and more affordablehouses included.

Jamie’s Picnic PartyIt’s time for Jamie’s party again in theManor gardens on Saturday 5 August, from 3 to 5pm. The sun will shine ofcourse and if raindrops fall, which theyhaven’t done in all these years of Jamie’sparties, there’s that huge cedar tree toshelter under with that amazing swing.

Also, of course there are the tents offeringteas and snacks. There will be a bouncycastle again (free bounces), activities andteam games. But the party is notexclusively for children, their parents orgrandparents. It’s for anyone who likes tocome along and enjoy the relaxing greenspace of the large Manor garden lawnand chat to others while the childrenplay. Bring a rug or a light folding chair ifyou can. Otherwise there will be uprightchairs dotted about.

Newcomers ask ‘Who’s Jamie?’ He’s apuppet-like figure of the young St Jameswith a welcoming smile and a shell on hisbelt (like pilgrims to Spain used to wear). This is a fun party. He’s just imaginary. It’sSt James’s church community who hostthe party every year as a present to thismarvellous village.

How to get there: come through thecurved-headed door in the high wall inChurch Street – that way we can welcomeyou. (Anyone who needs easier accessmay use the main drive – behind the warmemorial. If so, come over and say helloat the welcome table.) Don’t forget – allchildren must be accompanied by an

District DigestApart from a strangely interestingGeneral Election and the parties’preparations, there is little to report onthe District front. So, having been askedseveral times about the reasons for andthe progress of the emerging Local Plan, Ithought you all might be interested alittle background.

I quote from an open letter I recentlywrote to a pressure group in Stonesfieldwhich has reservations about the scale ofbuilding applications for the village.

The Local Plan for sustaineddevelopment in West Oxfordshire wasrejected by the Government Inspectoras having insufficient housingprovision per year until 2031. WODChad estimated a total of 550 per year. The Inspector appointed by CentralGovernment requires a minimum of650 per year.

As a consequence, WODC cannotdemonstrate a 5-year land supply ofdevelopment sites. In turn, this hasresulted in ‘open house’ forlandowners wishing to capitalise ontheir holdings and developersmaximising profits with what canonly be classed as speculativeapplications. This is a situation whichhas been forced upon the Districtdirectly as a result of its attempt topreserve the rural character of WestOxfordshire which we all love – one ofthe most pleasant places to live andwork in the country.

The Inspector is expected to reveal hisdecisions later in July. It is rumoured thathe is concerned about applicationswithin the AONB, when there are sitesoutside the designated area. Here inStonesfield and Combe we wouldwelcome this.

An application to erect acommunications mast on the playingfield in Stonesfield is facing widespreadcriticism and objections on the groundsof it being inappropriately positionednear to houses. At the time of writing, Ithink that there is considerable sympathyfrom the planning staff with this view. Itmay well result in a refusal.

Finally, may I through this medium, welcome the return of our Member ofParliament, Robert Courts. As a DistrictCouncillor, he was an important memberof the Cabinet and worked assiduouslyfor the residents of West Oxfordshire.

Richard Bishop (891414;[email protected])

Oxfordshire County CouncilThe elections County Council electionsare complete and I’m honoured to havebeen re-elected as the councillor for theWoodstock Division. I would like tothank everybody who voted for me andassure all residents I’ll work hard over thecoming four years for everybody. I willcontinue to hold regular surgeries andsend out monthly reports to interestedresidents.

The Conservatives gained 3 and lost 3divisions, so we are still one short of anoverall majority. The Conservative–Independent Alliance will continue torun the administration. I have been re-

elected as Leader of the Council, something I’m proud of despite thechallenges ahead.

Parish councils will be particularlyinterested in the creation of the newCabinet post for ‘Local Communities’,held by Mark Gray. One of his key tasksis to re-energise the ‘OxfordshireTogether’ campaign that promotes closerworking between OCC and parishcouncils.

Whilst the county elections may be over, the General Election continues at fullpace, at the time of writing. Until a newgovernment is announced with itspolicies, the full impact on localgovernment will not be known. However, the two key areas for me are the fundingof Social Care and HighwaysInfrastructure, and I will continue tolobby for additional funding for theseand other areas across the council.

Stonesfield Cricket ClubDespite the tragic recent passing of ourgroundsman, batsman, wicketkeeper andall-round top bloke Andy Crawford, theclub has really pulled together and bothsides have made encouraging starts to theseason. Both sit mid-table and are wellplaced for a push up the league.

In addition, the 1st XI have won throughtwo rounds in the Airey Cup and face aquarter final tie at Faringdon on 9 July, while the 2nd XI triumphed in a roundone thriller at distant Westcott to set up ahome quarter final tie vs Deddington2nds. This win was particularly sweet aslast wicket pair Michael Franklin (aged15) and Rowan Moss (13) showed nervesof steel to get the winning runs underpressure.

Notable performances in the 1st XI haveincluded a magnificent innings of 109not out by new signing Shoaib Ahmed, while paceman Sam Hibberd and spinbowler Tom Gubbins have been takingwickets.

In the 2nd XI Sammy Hart produced aterrific innings of 62 to help us win atEynsham, and all the bowlers have beentaking wickets – Dan Taylor, MichaelFranklin, Kev Sherbourne, JordanNewman and Dave Skidmore all doingwell.

democracy whereby all people areunder God and our leaders areelected ‘to serve’ rather than torule. Even the monarch is underGod’s authority.

• Because reading and understandingthe Bible was held to be important,Christianity in Britain encouragedliteracy.

• Although there were notoriousexceptions, the Church of Englandwas in large measure anorganisation of all people, not justof the upper class.

• Some historians argue that JohnWesley’s impact literally savedEngland from a revolution similarto that in France. Of course, thegreat Christian advocate forequality for all people, WilliamWilberforce, led the way inEngland for the abolition ofslavery.

As we have lost touch with thisChristian heritage the resultingcultural amnesia has led to one of theworst of modern vices – racism – andto many of the challenges ofmulticultural relativism. So, if you ask‘what has made Britain such anattractive place to live?’ the responseof most involves something about‘being British’. The reality is that thiscovetable ‘Britishness’ owes a greatdeal to our Christian heritage and itsvalues – such as decency, gentlenessand truthfulness – which are amongthe hallmarks of true Christianity. The outworking of these principlescan provide valuable connectionswith like-minded people of other

faiths and those who profess nofaith.’

He goes on to mention:

2) There is ‘Adolescence’. It is nowvery hard to believe that within livingmemory organisations such as theBBC were assumed to be in thebusiness of educating the masses andof elevating cultural standards.‘Dumbing down’ (the French nicelytranslate this as la crétinisation) is nowalmost the norm. Seriousness isseriously uncool. Shallowness is‘deep’.

3) There is Acquisitiveness. We wantmoney, we want stuff, and we wantexperiences for ourselves. The newcathedrals of Britain are the shoppingcentres.

4) Perhaps ultimately the root of it allis Arrogance. We have no need ofanybody else but ourselves. God hasbeen marginalised not because peoplehave adopted a version of atheism oragnosticism but simply because wewant to be in charge of our ownlives. It has been widely said that ‘anEnglishman is a self-made man whoworships his creator’. Replacing theinward focus and self-obsession oftoday with values that includekindness, good manners, care for theelderly and infirm, trustworthiness, graciousness and faithfulness wouldsurely reunite the ‘great’ with theBritish.

J. John

See you soon, D.F.T.W.

Rev Roy

From your Parish PriestI ran this letter from J. John a few yearsago and was struck how relevant it stillis to us today. What do you think aboutit?

An Open Letter to Britain.Much is being made at present of‘British values’, with the intentionthat all who live and work here willhave a clear idea of what it means tobe British and the standards ofbehaviour and the attitudes that wewish the world to associate with this. But I would suggest that as a nationwe have not only failed to embodythe values that were once thought of(probably inaccurately) as beingpeculiarly associated with theseislands, but we have succumbed to aset of characteristics that are all tooprevalent throughout the modernworld. They can be summarised asfollows:

1) There is Amnesia. As a nation, wehave forgotten where we have comefrom and who we have been. Theenormously impactful Christian rootsin this country have been ignored, distorted, and in places deliberatelyrejected. Our Christian heritage runsdeep in our land. England’s firstchurch historian, the Venerable Bede, reported in his book The History of theEnglish Church and People, that in156AD a British King names Luciuswrote to the Pope asking for Christianteaching and formation. BothCatholic and Protestant Christianityhas formed us. History reflects thatthe past 500 years of Protestantreligion in Britain have shaped Britishculture.

• It produced a nation that wasaware of the Bible and its values.

• Christian principles directlyinfluenced the framework of British

Stonesfield Methodist Church

News Update

The Methodist Church celebrates its150th Birthday on 19 July 2017. What an

amazing day that must have been in1867, when the new church had itsgrand opening. Just a few village peoplehad prayed, worked hard and beendetermined to build a larger church, oneto accommodate a fast-growing

congregation. A tremendous achievementindeed! Now we must follow them, pray, work and be determined to keep thechurch open, even when its future looksuncertain.

The outreach open day at the church, planned for 17 June will be over whenyou read this, but there is still plenty oftime to offer your help and ideas. Thechurch is here to serve the whole village,so please get in touch soon. Now wemust look to our birthday celebrationsand do justice to the work anddedication of all those great people whocame before us and made thisanniversary day possible.

The Birthday Lunch on Sunday 16 Julywill begin at 1pm. A ThanksgivingService follows at 3pm and we welcomeeveryone to this service. Come and joinus on this very special occasion.

ordering supplies and shipping themto disaster victims.

A few years back they heard someonetrying to get into their house. Notknocking, not trying to break the lock. But wiggling a key unsuccessfully inthe keyhole. Marcia came to the door.

‘Can I help you?’ she asked throughthe peep hole.

‘The key doesn’t work.’ They openedthe door and were surprised to see sixadults with luggage. The huddle ofHispanic travellers looked weary, as ifthey were barely holding on until theycould fall into bed. The conversationprogressed in fits and starts, thedoorstep crowd being light on Englishand Marcia and her husband knowinglittle Spanish.

Gradually the details emerged thatthese folks had been gifted a trip toDisneyworld, and had rented a houseto stay in. They showed the address.

‘This is the right number but thewrong street. The one you want isaround the corner. I'll take you,’Marcia’s husband offered.

‘But not until I get you some coffee,’Marcia interrupted. She ushered theminto the kitchen.

‘We are from Chile. Mario and Joséwere stuck in the mine,’ one of themsaid quietly. It had been all over thenews. A roof collapsed and thirty-threemen were trapped a mile down. Theeffort to rescue them had beenenormous, with the combinedresources of a global community. Theirfaces said what their voices did not. Ithad been gruelling both for the menin the ground and their families upabove. Waiting. Praying.

‘We are so glad you are safe!’ Marciasmiled. ‘But wait, we never introducedourselves. I am Marcia and this is myhusband, John Furry.’

‘JOHN FURRY!’ José and Mario gasped. They abruptly stood up and threwtheir arms around him, overcome withemotion.

It turns out that every package of foodand medical supplies that hadtravelled down the airhole had ashipping label, and on that lable was aname:

John Furry.

It’s almost as if Someone is watchingover us.

Oxfordshire area announced on 30March that for the immediate futurethere will be just one priest to cover theparishes of Charlbury and ChippingNorton.

Fr Aldo Tapparo, parish priest atCharlbury, is likely to retire in earlysummer and move to a flat in Oxford.Charlbury will be served by Fr TonyJoyce, Parish Priest at Chipping Norton.

The Bishop stressed that no churches willclose, and has asked for ‘adjustments tothings like Mass times and perhaps toother things as well . . . to be decidedlocally as it is there that the knowledgeexists to decide these things in a sensibleand orderly way’.

Discussions about what this means havestarted with Charlbury’s CatholicParochial Council. The parishionersbelieve there are solutions availableallowing conveniently timed SundayMasses at both Charlbury and Enstone. But it is highly likely that at the veryleast the timing of Sunday Masses in thearea will change from midsummer.

We will let you know as and when wehave further news about Father Aldo’sleaving date and the new Mass times. Ifyou have any questions or queries aboutthis, please use this email address:[email protected]
