Stonesfield Beer Festival 2018As many of you know, the StonesfieldBeer Festival, Septembeerfest, is a greatoccasion, when the community comestogether to listen to great music andsample the many craft beers and ciderson offer. Just as importantly, the festivalraises money for charity. A range ofcharities have benefited and the 2016festival raised over £15,000, which wentto Back-Up, who support people afterspinal cord injury and the John Radcliffechildren’s physiotherapy ward amongstothers.

The organising committee is very muchhoping to stage the event again thisSeptember, when the two main charitieswill be Dogs for Good, who provideassistance dogs to people with physicaldisabilities and children with autism, andAlzheimers Research UK.

Many people give their time and effort tosupport Septembeerfest, but in order to putit on we have to raise funds viasponsorship in the region of £10,000 tocover the larger necessary expenses suchas the marquees, lighting and staging. Wewould love to hear from any localbusinesses or individuals who feel thatthey may be able to make a sponsorshipdonation. Talented performers wanted!The Stonesfield Players present anApril Review on Saturday 21 April,7pm.Saints, Dragons, Whispering Knights andTreacle Wells

To celebrate St George’s Day and with anod to Shakespeare’s birthday, theStonesfield Players are looking to ourwonderfully talented villagers to performsmall, 5 to 10 minutes pieces on thetheme of myths and legends. This can besung medieval songs; perhaps you couldperform some poetry. Maybe a smallgroup could put together a drama pieceabout St George and the Dragon. For themusicians out there perhaps a classicalpiece of music or even a modern take onsomething Shakespearian.

So we are looking for musicians, storytellers, actors, singers, poets and dancersto perform something of their ownchoosing to fill an evening ofentertainment. The evening will be set tocandlelight with a hot meal provided to

all that attend. We are aiming to create awarm and inviting atmosphere, to giveall of our performers the best experience.

Get active in the New Year –Volunteer with the WychwoodProjectIn 2017 volunteers helped us to plantover 1,500 trees, coppice woodland, layhedges, repair dry stone walls, andmonitor Barn Owls and flora to improveWest Oxfordshire’s habitats andlandscape.

Wychwood Project volunteering is onoffer every month. Why not come andjoin us to get some exercise and fresh air,meet some friendly fellow volunteers –and help the Wychwood Project.

Combe Road Sewage PumpingStationFor some time we have had variousproblems with the Combe Road SewagePumping Station. These have resulted inoverflowing sewage and emergency call-outs for the station to be pumped outand in very unpleasant and unacceptableconditions for neighbouring residents.

I have been asked by Stonesfield ParishCouncil to take these matters up withThames Water but need moreinformation, i.e. dates and times ofoverflow problems, dates the emergencytanker has had to be called out, dates ofattendance of engineers on emergencycall-outs etc. Supporting photographswould be a great help.

If anyone has such information I wouldbe grateful if they could contact me and Iwill take the matter forward and presenta formal complaint to Thames Water.

Sustainable Stonesfield More than 80 people came to our publicmeeting on 15 January to get an updateon Sustainable Stonesfield’s activitiesduring 2017.

We reported on the steps we had taken tochallenge the three major developmentapplications: CALA Homes and Pye Phase2 on the Woodstock Road and NorthFarm on Farley Lane. We re-stated our

belief that there were no ‘exceptionalcircumstances’ that would justify puttingany developments of more than 10houses in the AONB. We described howwe had made representations at theInspector’s hearings regarding the newLocal Plan, and that this had caused himto require WODC to show cause as towhy any such developments could beallowed. We are now waiting for theInspector to report on the Local Plan andfor WODC’s decisions on the threeapplications.

We raised the topic of unsustainabilitydue to inadequate infrastructure. Theparlous state of our sewerage system wasmuch discussed. The Parish Council isalready taking this up: please respond toDavid Brown’s request (on this page,above) for people to send him details andphotographs of sewerage incidents sothat he can make a case to ThamesWater.

We also discussed the current congestionon our roads, which will only get worse.The junction with the A44 at Judd’sgarage is increasingly hazardous. Is Smudge visiting you?We are currently experiencing someproblems with our cat, and wonderedwhether anyone could help.

Smudge lives at 63 Longore, Stonesfield.He is a large 3-year-old, black and whitemale cat who we rescued three years agoafter he had been neglected andseriously injured in an accident and leftwith lasting injuries. Smudge hashappily lived here since then; howeverhe has recently been disappearing fordays at a time.

We posted on the Stonesfield Facebookpage to see if anyone had seen Smudge,and it turns out he is visiting a numberof nearby houses. Whilst we are happySmudge is in no danger, he now barelycomes home, and when he does, he staysonly for food and then leavesimmediately.

It’s sad not to see Smudge often as he ispart of the family, and of course we needto know where he is for vet check-upsand general peace of mind. If Smudge isvisiting you, please could you refrainfrom feeding him, and encourage him tocome home.

The CommonWe have a grant from the new PYEdevelopment for arts projects in thevillage. This money is being held byWODC at present. We will work withthem to put it to beneficial use. One ofthe projects is to design and erect pictorialinformation boards on the Commonexplaining the flora and fauna found onthis special SSSI site. West Oxon District CouncilDistrict UpdateOn the planning front, a very recentdevelopment is detailed in the SustainableStonesfield article above. The Inspectorsays that the allocation for our part of theDistrict has been fulfilled and there is noneed for further large developments inthe AONB. My thanks and congratula -tions go to all in the village who have putpressure on the Inspector. Incidentally,WODC had already taken the decisionbefore Christmas to recommend that theCala proposal be refused.

I suspect that the proposal for 34 newhomes at North Farm will appear on theagenda for February. I know that there isconsiderable opposition to this for severalreasons, but the prospect of trulyaffordable units may have weight in thecollective minds of the planning

committee. Blenheim andWODC haveagreed to work in tandem to offer houseswith a discount on the market valuation,which would make the cost approxi -mately 40% cheaper than the usual 20%which the Government applies to‘affordable units’ in the accepted schemeof such things. This partnership proposalwill also be applied to the phase 2 of theCharity Farm development.

The large-scale developments in LongHanborough are proceeding and willresult in vastly increased traffic, especiallyat peak times on the A4095.

Hanborough stationWest Oxfordshire District Council havethis week approved plans to improveHanborough railway station. £10,000 willbe put towards the installation of amodular station building, which willcontain a new ticket office, waiting roomand toilet. Operator Great WesternRailway is also looking to house a smallretail outlet in the building.

In the last 10 years, passenger numbers atHanborough have more than trebled andthere is a clear need to improve facilities atthe station to meet that demand. I lookforward to seeing this progress!

The day after our public meeting, thePlanning Inspector reported hispreliminary findings on the proposedWest Oxfordshire Local Plan 2031.

He has asked WODC to remove all theallocations of housing to the Burford-Charlbury AONB sub-area (this includesthe CALA Woodstock Road site) fromthe plan, dismissing the justificationsput forward by WODC for building inthe AONB to meet district housingtargets.

This does not mean that there will be nodevelopment in the AONB, even on theproposed sites, but it sends a clearmessage to WODC that it needs to revisitits approach to housing need anddevelopment in the AONB, and is avictory for all the organisations andindividuals which have argued againstWODC’s previous approach.

Subject to this, the inspector has alsoconcluded that the plan is sound foradoption.

Unfortunately,there has been an indefinite delay asTelefonica have been told that they arenot in a position to proceed at themoment. This is very disappointing forthe village and we hope to be able to keepyou informed on any progress beingmade.

Severe WeatherSPC has a surplus supply of salt/grit storedby Roger Evins at Charity Farm. He haskindly offered to drop some of this off tohouseholders if they contact him. This isnot for personal use but can be spread onroads and pavements near your homes.The roadside salt bins should bereplenished by OCC.

Sewage Overflow at ChristmasFollowing reports of tankers at thepumping station in Combe Road, SPScontacted ThamesWater, who explainedthat a failed pump was responsible andhad to be replaced. A similar occurrencehad happened in July. There will be wetwell cleansing soon to help with theunpleasant odours relating to thisproblem.

ThamesWater request that usersremember the 3Ps that should be flushedinto the system. Anything else such as fat,oil, wet wipes, baby wipes, tissues etc. willcause blockages leading to pump failures.

The controversial chicane onWoodstockRoad is going to be re-assessed byHighways.

Stonesfield School NewsAs part of letting you know what ishappening with school governance, weshall be bringing you a termly update.Last term, as you can imagine, much ofour focus was on Ofsted and on startingthe Headteacher recruitment process.

School finance is an ongoing area whichtakes much of our attention. As you mayhave seen in the press, the amount ofmoney we are given to run the schoolcontinues to reduce. School funding iscurrently based on how many childrenwe have on the school roll; fewerchildren means less money. Althoughthere is a new ‘funding formula’ coming,we do not yet know whether this will bepositive for us. In managing our verytight budget, we review all spendingevery single month, down to the lastpound.

On a more positive note, our Ofstedinspection report. We are absolutelythrilled with the outcome of ‘Good’ inall areas and for overall effectiveness. Wecongratulate all the staff for maintaining

consistently high standards and seekingevery opportunity to improve the waythey teach and deliver educationalopportunities to the children. None ofthis can be done, of course, without theexcellent leadership, drive, enthusiasmand vision we all get from Ms McGregor.

We are delighted and proud that thereport reflects our lovely, hard-working,well-mannered children and oursuccessful, warm and nurturing schoolthat staff and governors work so hard tomaintain.

Here are some highlights from thereport. ‘Stonesfield is a happy andwelcoming school . . . Teachers haveestablished good and warm relationshipswith their pupils . . . Women’s InstituteIt is with much regret that I have toreport the cessation of the StonesfieldWomen’s Institute. After surviving forninety-five years, it was not possible tofind members willing to take on theessential officer posts. After a ballot bymembers it was decided that the institutecould not continue .

We hope that in the near future it will bepossible to re-open. However, in the

meantime I would like to thank themany villagers who have given theirsupport to an organisation which hasoffered friendship and the pursuit of amyriad activities to so many over the lastninety-five years.

Our 2018 campaign commences withwinter indoor net practice. We have anhour session starting at 4pm on Sunday18 February – using the splendid newsports hall facilities at CharlburyCommunity Centre, running each weekuntil matches start in mid-April. Allplayers old and new who want to play forStonesfield are welcome (and any Aussieswho’ve just moved into the village whocan bowl at 90mph or hit centuries

would be nice); it’s just £2 a week forthose wanting to give it a go – everyonegets a turn in bat and everyone bowls!We welcome young players, who need tobe at least 12 years old on 31 Aug 2017(last year) to be eligible for adult cricketthis season as an under 13 categoryplayer.

The Club is looking for a new kit sponsorfor 2018. This will enable us to invest insome smart modern playing shirts –featuring the name of your company ororganisation on the front! The club playsaround 40 matches each summer allaround Oxfordshire, so it’s quite goodexposure. In fact, some players are stillwearing shirts funded by kit sponsorsfrom a decade ago – so they’ve had prettygood value for money. The shirtsponsorship will likely cost around £600to kit out the whole senior squad – pleasecontact me ASAP for details if you’reinterested.

I think I have made a good decision notto forget what Epiphany means to mebecause it ushers in Grace and pardonnot only for me but for us all.

Oh and by the way, talking of Grace, ifyou have been following our familynews concerning our youngestdaughter’s impending child’s birth wehad the arrival of our latestgranddaughter on the 27 December. Sheweighed in at eight pounds thirteen andhalf ounces and after a lot ofdeliberation became ‘Dulcie Grace’.Grace of course meaning favour, gift andkindness amongst other things. Shecertainly is a real gift of new life and is awonderful new addition to the growingtally of grandchildren. That’s five now . . .oh goodness.

From your Parish Priest Well here we are in Epiphany. It doesn’tseem a minute since we were makingour plans for Christmas. Epiphany, ofcourse, is a Greek word meaning toreveal, show forth or to appear as amanifestation. The baby Jesus wasrevealed to the Wise Men or Kings as wesometimes call them. For me it’s animportant statement from God that theImmanuel, The Saviour, was to appear toevery nation, not just the Jews.

It is traditional to think of the threekings representing the differentcategories of the gentile nations aroundthe then known world; indicating that itwas always God’s intention that thewhole world would know and benefitfrom Jesus being their Saviour too.

It really does represent good news andof course it is all recorded in theGospels; the word gospel meaning ‘goodnews’.

The arrival of the baby Jesus alsoushered in a new way of relating toGod. Instead of being under the Lawwhich was contained in the Jewishwritings and our Old Testament, we werenow to consider ourselves to be under‘Grace’.

The difference was that under the Lawof the Jews we were all condemnedbecause none of us could keep it, wehad all fallen short of its demands, eventhe Jews, even if you considered thatyou came under the rules as gentiles inthe first place.

However, under the new system of‘Grace’, that Jesus represented, not onlywas it extended to the Jews but to allhumankind. So what is Grace, what doesit mean?

Well under the Law of the Jews if youfailed to keep it there wereconsequences. Some of thoseconsequences included execution bystoning. Under Grace the consequences

PatienceWe are told that ‘patience is a virtue’ butone with which many of us struggle.

In the Book of Exodus we are told thatwhen Moses descended from MountSinai, God revealed Himself, declaring ‘Iam the Lord God, I am merciful and verypatient with my people.’ (Exodus 34:6) Inthis passage, we are reminded that God isinfinitely forgiving and understanding ofour human failings.

St Paul further says that the first attributeof love is patience: ‘Love is patient’ (1Corinthians 13:4), (Ref: Walk with Me,December 2017/January 2018.) In otherwords, if we truly want to demonstrateour love for each other, we have to beable to show also that capacity forforgiveness, to be willing to see theother’s view point and restrain our ownquick judgements.

In Jesus Christ we have the perfect modelof patience with His endless willingnessto gently show His followers what Hewanted them to do and in Hisperseverance through trial and sufferingto death. Developing patience is an idealNew Year’s resolution and one that isnever too late to start practising.

memories of the festive period.
