A Southern African Association for Energy Efficiency event Chapter of the US-based AEE

6th SOUTHERN AFRICAN

ENERGY EFFICIENCY CONVENTION

he 6th Southern African Energy Efficiency Convention (SAEEC2011) and Exhibition held in 2011 will be remembered for challenging delegates to choose between a black or bright future in South Africa. Exhibitors left nothing to chance and showcased a variety of energy efficient

choices to make this possible. Speakers inspired audiences with the message that energy efficiency makes sound business sense in all sectors of the economy.

As the flagship event of the Southern African Association for Energy Efficiency (SAEE), a chapter of the US-based Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), staging an event like SAEEC2011 is made possible by the generosity exhibited by stakeholders in the industry through participation in sponsorships, exhibitions, speakers, endorsements, media exposure and the trusted word-of-mouth. The SAEE exists to further the cause of energy efficiency to the benefit of the Southern African region and endeavours to provide accessible platforms for this purpose.

To contribute to the quality and value of the SAEEC2011, an IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) peer-review process was successfully put in place. In addition, the SAEEC2011 was validated for 2 CPD credits with the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE).

AN UNRIVALLED CONVENTION SPEAKER PORTFOLIO The 6th convention saw an astounding number of 82 speakers with local and international representation from countries like Ireland, Zambia, India, France and Germany, each conversant in their area of expertise, with 13 peer-reviewed papers through the IEEE PES process.

Opening session The Convention’s opening session featured Ms Mokgadi Mathekgana the Chief Director of Clean Energy at the Department of Energy; Andrew Etzinger, Senior General Manager of Eskom IDM; Prof LJ Grobler, President of the SAEE; Ms Ponthsho Maruping, Group Executive of the industrial sectors at the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA); Dr John Ryan from Certification Europe in Ireland; and Mr Christophe Juillet from Schneider Electric in France. As was heard in the opening session the National Grid will remain under pressure as the economy grows. Although alternative energies are being introduced into the country’s energy mix, and energy capacity is being expanded, the fact remains that a culture of using energy efficiently has to become a priority within the country. operations and the importance of developing an active energy management system is vital to ensure future business growth. Within the opening session Eskom also officially announced its Demand Market Participation (DMP) programme for smaller organisations, and Prof LJ Grobler announced that South Africa had been voted, out of 50 countries, to lead the international ISO working group on measurement and verification (M&V).

Breakaway sessions Session chairpersons for the 9 breakaway sessions included:

Prof H. Vermeulen, University of Stellenbosch

Ms L. Reynolds, Saint Gobain and SAEE Board Member

Mr H.N. Mashele, ABSA Bank and SAEE Board Member

Dr T.L. Mthombeni, TIA and SAEE Board Member

Mrs E. Kikonyogo, ABB and MIEO Chairperson

Mr T. Kraneis, Lahmeyer International, Germany

Mr S. Zeederberg, Sasol and SAEE Board Member Breakaway sessions discussed pertinent information relating to the industry under these topics:

Measurement and verification (M&V) 2011 saw the development of quite a number of incentives, regulatory initiatives and standards releases which all depend on the correct and transparent quantification and proof of energy savings. The M&V track addressed this need through its 6 speakers by overviewing M&V as it is developing globally for South Africans to draw from. The various accreditation processes, ISO and SANS energy efficiency and energy management related standards, how evaluation is done for EEDSM and guidance on setting up M&V, as well as the importance of boundaries with such projects were all presented and debated.

Energy projects and case studies No gathering is complete without practical examples of lessons learnt through case studies. The importance of using a reputable energy services provider was highlighted, how CDM should be co-ordinated with energy projects and the track featured high profile case studies by PPC, Coca Cola, Avis and SABC.

Financing, tax and incentives Taxation is used to encourage and penalise spending behaviour, in the

SAEEC2011’s case it is the energy spending behaviour which was looked at by reviewing alternatives and options for carbon taxation, using carbon finance to implement energy efficiency measures, and driving financial results through such measures, as well as financial and non-financial options of funding and development. Ensuring optimal financial benefits to encourage efficient energy use was also covered in the M&V track.

Energy management and standards Simplified steps were presented to un-complicate energy efficiency and management, following the SA National Standards, looking at the way forward for SA on ISO 50 001, with speakers that presented innovative methods and initiatives to ensure that these could be effectively implemented across all sectors.

Energy technology Innovation is a key to future energy market development and the session featured designing for energy and the related incentive possibilities, innovation systems within the local regions, and smart grids for energy efficient neighbourhoods as well as how optimised voltage power technologies could ensure efficient power supply.

Mining and industrial energy optimisation A full day of presentations on optimising energy efficiency within the most intensive energy industries where major power savings are possible, from technology innovation, motors, VSDs, projects and case studies of actual successful implementations, pioneering underground air cooling, CFD codes to achieve higher energy savings, harmonics, selecting the correct suppliers that can align for optimal energy savings, steam and condensate losses, and identifying energy savings

opportunities within these industries were presented.

Energy efficiency in buildings Energy savings in buildings seem to have created a ‘visibility’ for energy

efficiency as reputable organisations opt to base major marketing plans around their buildings. This bodes well in creating excellent public awareness and draws the attention to the fact that energy efficiency is

now a reality for all, not only for households who don’t want to be subjected to load shedding. Papers ranging from the latest building

standards, energy performance benchmarking, lighting retrofit case studies, LEDs, insulation, heat pumps, green manufacturing for the built environment, evaluating return on investment vs cost of ownership in retrofits, renewables in buildings and the hotel industries’ efforts to reduce its footprint.

Renewable and alternative energy The foundation to the successful use of renewable and alternative energy lies within the efficient use of energy ensuring cost-effective investments. An overview of the country’s green sector was presented as well as an opinion lifted about whether renewables are a vision or reality for our country, tips to distinguish between good and bad solar, solar roof tiles, looking at possibilities with photovoltaics, heat pumps,

financial models for renewables, the African hydropower market, and wind power as additional energy supply was delivered.

Policy, strategy, planning

In conclusion, policy, strategy and plans laid by government demonstrates its support of energy efficiency and was presented in this track through speakers from governmental and private organisations on energy efficiency in municipal buildings, whether SA is in-step with renewables, developing an energy efficiency master plan, challenges faced by government in implementing energy efficiency measures, looking at the metrics in policy and planning, as well as public administration and planning, regulating environmental sustainability, and international best practice strategies.

Opening of the SAEEC2011

ANNUAL BANQUET AND AWARDS CEREMONY

Of The Southern African Association for Energy Efficiency (SAEE)

o major event such as the SAEEC2011 is complete without unwinding with some fun and laughter at the evening’s dinner and dance which marked the grand opening of the Southern

African Energy Efficiency Convention (SAEEC2011), and the SAEE’s Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony. The evening’s

entertainment had a clever Black and White Tongue-in-Cheek twist with South African comedian Joey Rasdien ‘playing’ with the Banquet’s black and white theme allowing the over 200 guests to relax with laughter.

Joey is the epitome of South African comedy today. His endearing stage persona is intellectually absurd, physically hysterical and visually beside himself. Gareth Burley, radio presenter at Kingfisher FM in Nelson Mandela Bay, and host of the SAEE and Kingfisher FM’s radio programme, The Green Hour, introduced guests to the New Age of communication challenging guests to

You’ve Got The Power – Are You Using It.

Revealing mind-boggling statistics of how the younger generation are communicating faster and more efficiently through Social Media – the generation which we are educating, and saving the planet for.

SAEE ANNUAL ENERGY AWARDS CEREMONY

The Annual Southern African Association for Energy Efficiency (SAEE) Energy Awards Programme recognises new energy companies, new persons that have recently embraced the energy industry, and persons and companies that have made outstanding contributions towards improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions. In 2011, the SAEE also launched the Energy Project of the Year category, which was open to energy efficiency projects within the country that included aspects of energy management and/or renewable energy installations in the residential, commercial or industrial sectors.

The 2011 winners were announced at the Awards Ceremony:

Energy Company of the Year ENERGYWISE MAGNET ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES

Energywise Systems and Magnet Electrical Supplies are listed on the Eskom IDM website as the authorised supplier of 16 different energy efficient showerheads. This collaboration, together with a reputation for providing reliable and efficient products to the residential and commercial markets in South Africa, has afforded the team a performance contract with Eskom for the largest showerhead roll-out in the country to date. This initiative is projected to reduce the demand for energy from the national grid by a whopping 330 GWh, or 110 GWh a year.

Energy Newcomer of the Year INTERNATIONAL SLURRY PUMP SOLUTIONS (ISPS)

The locally developed Phoenix alternative slurry pumping technology is an innovation based on the old concept of transferring energy from pumped water for alternative use, and packaged the concept for slurry pumping applications into an energy efficient engineered solution, suitable for mass production. The Phoenix Slurry Pump saves energy, water, the environment and significant maintenance requirements. Phoenix virtually eliminates

most of the frequently maintained wet-end wear parts used in conventional centrifugal pumping. As ample flow and pressure is delivered by a single Phoenix unit, the need for multiple pumps in-series is eliminated, saving initial investment and installation costs.

Energy Excellence Award GAS MONITORING SOLUTIONS

Already a Da Vinci Technology Top 100 qualifier, and past winner of an SA Stainless Steel Development Association Award for welding, as well as the 2010 Eskom eta Award winner for the

Page 10: th SOUTHERN AFRICAN ENERGY EFFICIENCY CONVENTION T...South Africa. Exhibitors left nothing to chance and showcased a variety of energy efficient ... Energy projects and case studies

10

Industrial Innovation category, Gas Management Solutions proved a worthy winner this year with verified gas savings of 90% through welding invention. Gas Management Solutions uses Shield Gas Economisers to optimise the welding process, paired with accurate flow meters for measurement and smart leak detection methods employing ultrasonic equipment – the result; 90% gas savings, mega MW’s as 60% of the total cost of a cylinder is to produce the gas, much lower emissions due to reduced road transport, and overall good business practice.

Energy Project of the Year POWERTECH IST OTOKON

As the largest industrial Eskom DSM peak clipping project, Powertech IST Otokon’s compressed air project at Goldfields Driefontein had a peak clipping target of 12MW, but it has over-performed by 40% and resulted in avoiding 33t of CO2 emissions. These are only the contracted savings reported through the required Measurement and Verification (M&V), and not the savings in their entirety. The project encompasses an open architecture SCADA system controlling 50 underground valves, instruments, PLC systems, compressor efficiency, compressor controls, all part of an inclusive design process that was followed with the client’s involvement to ensure the successful performance of the system. Goldfields are not only saving energy and the environment but due to the proper design, implementation, measurement and verification of the project installation, the energy savings will be sustained and not diluted over time.

SAEEC2011 Best Double Stand Award ALPHA POWER SOLUTIONS

For two years in a row this award has gone to Alpha Power Solutions, 2011 saw a brand new ‘eye’ catching concept stand that attracted a lot of attention at the SAEEC2011 exhibition.

SAEEC2011 Best Single Stand Award ENERGYWISE

A double-whammy for Energywise in 2011, as the recipients of not only the Energy Company of the Year Award, but also the best single stand at the SAEEC2011 exhibition. An interactive demonstration exhibition that spurred allot of interest from delegates.
