FROM THE EDITOR...Welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead for the second time this week as the side look to build on Tuesday night’s opening point.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for Keith and the lads as the team adjust to life in the Ryman Premier League, but a solid performance on Tuesday night earned a point via a goalless draw with the Met Police.

So something to build on then going into this afternoon’s game as we welcome Margate to the SCT from the Kent coast, with Craig Holloway’s outift also picking up a point in midweek as they drew 1-1 away at Enfield - their seventh point of the campaign having also won two of their other three games.

The Mead travel to both Cray and Enfield next, before returning to action here at the SCT on September 7th, as we entertain Wingate & Finchley.

BEST OF THE REST...

“We have got the games coming thick & fast at the moment - if we can get three or four points we’ll be going the right way”

Good afternoon and welcome to Sporting Club Thamesmead for today’s game against Margate.

Firstly, may I take this opportunity in welcoming Craig Holloway and his Margate team this afternoon - I hope you enjoy your short stay here and have a safe journey home afterwards.

Tuesday night finally saw us get our season underway with a good 0-0 draw against a very good Met Police side.

I thought, overall, we were unlucky not to come away with all three points, especially with the chances we created, but I was happy that we got our first point of the season and we kept a clean sheet.

It now gives us a platform from which we can start to build our season.

The game itself was very entertaining for a 0-0, with both sides looking for the three points.

I thought Met Police started well and it took us about ten minutes to adapt to the style of play and the pace of the game.

I made a few changes for the game, bringing in experienced Jamie Turner

in goal for Buddy because of his injury last Saturday and I thought Jamie was outstanding. His experience and talking was priceless.

I also gave a start to Calum McGeehan and Stuart Zanone, and I thought both had very good games.

After the first ten minutes I thought we settled down and played some very good stuff, creating chances but not quite turning them into goals.

The second half was very end-to-end with both sides looking for the win. I thought we had nicked it right at the end when Mainy’s header looped over the keeper, but the defender managed to head it off the line.

After the game I told the lads that I was pleased with the performance - I thought our work rate was very good and we defended a lot better.

Going forward, I thought Danny Phillips was exceptional and he linked up well with Stuart and Jon up front who looked a constant threat.

We now have to build on the result and start to turn these performances into wins.

It isn’t going to be easy as every game

in this league is hard, but if we show the same commitment as we have in three out of the four games I think we will be ok.

On the squad front, I am now starting to get some players back from injury.

Theo Fairweather-Johnson and Michael Power both should be available for today’s game, as should Rob Budd.

We have lost Rob Carter with a back injury and Antone Douglas who pulled

a hamstring against Met Police.

Meanwhile, I have put Tyrus Gordon out on loan at VCD Athletic for a month and Richard Stevens is on loan at Holmesdale to get some game after his hamstring injury.

Daniel Ailey has also gone to Northwood to get some minutes and I’m looking to get Richard Butler some games as he has just come back from his honeymoon.

Unfortunately, Chris Edwards (pictured) has left the club to get

regular football. It’s a sad loss as Chris is a smashing bloke and has really fitted in well here.

I would like to thank him for what he has done for the club - he will, of course, go down in club history as the man that scored our winning penalty

in the play-off final last year, so I wish him all the best.

Today’s game is going to be another real test for us. Margate are always there or thereabouts

in the play-offs and, again, they

are looking to get

promotion this year.

Craig has a very good squad and we will really need to put in a performance to get anything from the game.

We also travel to Cray Wanderers on Monday in a local derby, so we have got games coming thick and fast.

If we can get three or four points from these two games then we are moving in the right direction.

Confidence is good in the camp and I’m sure now we have our first point then more will follow.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

FROM THE BOARDROOM:

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN

“We are all still learning and fine-tuning things here at the SCT, but at least we are

now here in our new home”

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Margate to our new home this afternoon and, after an enjoyable game and some refreshments, a safe journey home.

Whilst I was the Chairman and owner of Maidstone United we had many a hard, but very competitive, game against Margate, and I expect no different today. During that time I met some good, loyal football colleagues that I would like to give a personal good wish this afternoon.

There have been many changes at Margate since I left Maidstone, not only on the field but off as well, but I would like to take this opportunity to wish Margate the very best for the future with their ground development.

I know they have suffered delays and setbacks off the field but, hopefully, they will soon be in the position to have the development they and their supporters richly deserve.

We at Thamesmead certainly have suffered our own delays in moving into the SCT which was originally due to be completed during 2008, so we’re only five years late!

But now we’re here in these fine

facilities as a tenant rather than an owner, but that does not change the way we feel - it’s our new home with great facilities admired by all the clubs that have visited us so far.

Although I am a newcomer to the club - having been here just under a year (although it seems more like a lifetime!) - I personally believe that after what the club and its committee have had to endure off the field and what my fellow director, Keith, has achieved in such a short time as manager on the field, I feel it is only what they all deserve.

Everything is greatly appreciated; even when I drive into the new car park I now have to pinch myself as I do not have to dodge the potholes or watch where I put my foot in case I become waterlogged!

Whilst writing, I feel I should thank Mick Hayes and Richard Fishlock of the Thamesmead Trust - the two people I have had to work with to ensure that the club was in the position to move into the facilities. Without their help and support both Keith and I would not have been able to achieve so much for this fine football club.

I must also not forget Simon the stadium manager and all of his staff

who have proved, beyond doubt, since we moved in to the facility that they are fully to the task - yes, we are all learning and fine-tuning things, but we are now in our new home at least.

On the pitch, as I have said in previous programmes, we have found it hard to adjust to life in the Ryman Premier so far, mainly due to injuries and suspensions that have not allowed Keith to pick a settled side.

Moreover, having brought new players into the squad it always takes time for everything to gel.

I believe teams or individual players do not become bad overnight, so it is important that we should remain positive in everything we do.

I know Keith will get the squad working for each other and they will once again become the winning team that finished last season and, hopefully with a little bit more of the rub of the green, we will add to our points tally.

So let’s enjoy the football and get behind our respective teams.

MARGATE“The Mead are hoping to build on Tuesday’s

point but they face a difficult challenge against a side who have started positively”

The Mead welcome Margate to Sporting Club Thamesmead this afternoon, with the Gate making the trip across from the Kent coast.

The Mead are, of course, hoping to build on Tuesday night’s maiden point to claw away from the foot of the table, but they face a difficult challenge.

It’s been a positive start to the campaign for today’s visitors, with the Gate picking up seven points from the first four matches.

They secured a 1-1 draw away at Enfield in midweek and have bolstered their squad with some notable signings in an attempt to make an impact on the division at the right end this season.

Scott Kinch (pictured) has arrived from

Welling and, immediately, stated his ambition with the Gate to be striving for the league title.

“I am not looking for anything less than to be champions,” he told This Is Kent. “There’s a lot of talented, young players here.

“I didn’t sign to play in a struggling team and the play-offs is the least I expect from the group of players we have.”

Meanwhile, Gillingham youngster Jake Hessenthaler was added to the squad on loan and Craig Holloway was immediately impressed.

“Hess broke up the play so many times and always seemed to be in a decent position,” he said after the side’s 3-1 win over Harrow Borough last weekend.

Margate Football Club were founded in 1896/7, playing friendly matches on school grounds with the club colours being black and white. The club moved around the Margate area and played at various venues but in 1924/25 reformed and moved to Dreamland on the seafront and competed in the Kent League. In 1929 the club once again reformed and moved to their present home at Hartsdown Park. The playing colours changed to amber and black. 1934 saw the club become the nursery side to Arsenal with the Hartsdown pitch being reduced in size to match the one at Highbury. Margate, now in the Southern League, started their impressive FA Cup pedigree by reaching the Third Round Proper of the FA Cup.

In 1949/50, back in the Kent League, the playing colours changed to the present blue and white. On September 23, 1959, floodlights were used for the first time at Hartsdown. Margate, having now stepped up to the Southern League from the Kent League, officially opened the lights with a game against West Ham United in front of 4,216. The 1959/60 season saw the club reach the First Round of the FA Cup before losing a replay at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace in front of 28,753 - a record crowd to see a Margate game. In the FA Cup First Round in 1961/62, Margate pulled off one their biggest upsets by defeating Third Division leaders Bournemouth away 3-0. The 1964/65 season saw the club go full-time professional with the team finishing sixth in the Premier Division. However, the following season Margate finished bottom of the Premier Division and were relegated to Division One. The full-time policy was scrapped. Margate bounced back in 1966/67, finishing as runners-up of Division One. The record crowd at Hartsdown was set in 1972/73 when Tottenham Hotspur visited

in the FA Cup Third Round. Margate lost 6-0 in front of 14,169 spectators. After some seasons of struggle, 1981/82 saw Margate change name to Thanet United. This was reversed to Margate in 1989/90 when the club was taken over by Keith Piper and Gordon Wallis.

In 1996/97, Chris Kinnear was appointed manager, heralding a period of great success. In November 1997, Margate reached the First Round of the FA Cup for the first time since the Spurs game. Fulham came to Hartsdown in front of 5,100 and Sky TV’s cameras. Margate took an early lead but lost 2-1. In 1998/99, there was promotion to the Southern League Premier Division - the club’s first promotion since 1977/78.

The success continued as, in 2000/01, after a nail-biting two-horse race with Burton Albion, Margate won the Southern Premier title and promotion to the Conference. The first season in the Conference saw Margate finish in a highly creditable eighth position with an average home league crowd of 1,233.

The club set out a plan to develop Hartsdown to Football League ‘Grade A’ standard. This saw Margate groundshare during 2002/03 at Dover’s Crabble, having secured planning permission for the redevelopment of Hartsdown.

Again, the team did well on the pitch and Margate finished tenth. The season also saw a run to the Second Round of the FA Cup, beating Leyton Orient at Crabble in a First Round replay, then losing to Cardiff City.

The groundsharing at Crabble continued in 2003/04 due to delays to the redevelopment. In June 2004, the club, despite finishing 16th in the Conference, was demoted one division due to the ongoing delays to work at Hartsdown.

With the old ground demolished, Margate played 2004/05 in Conference South, groundsharing at Ashford Town, 35 miles away. Finishing the season in the relegation zone and in administration, having been subject to a transfer

embargo, Margate dropped into the Ryman League Premier Division.

However, there was good news as Margate started 2005/06 back at Hartsdown in a temporary stadium. An indifferent season saw Margate, at times, flirting with relegation and, with a handful of games remaining, Chris Kinnear was relieved of his duties after ten years in charge.

In summer 2008, former Gillingham defender Barry Ashby became Margate’s new manager with his former Gills team-mate Paul Smith as player-coach. The club said the emphasis was going to be on developing young players. However, the campaign started badly and Ashby departed in October, Terry Yorath taking charge with Neville Southall assisting. Margate finished in the relegation zone but were reprieved from the drop due to other clubs’ financial problems.

An indifferent start to 2009/10 saw Yorath resign in October. Former Ashford Town (Middlesex) manager Mark Butler took over with Steve Beeks as his assistant.

However, in February 2010 Butler resigned after only two wins in 16 games. Former Margate player Iain O’Connell was appointed boss. Again Margate finished in a relegation position but were reprieved.

In 2010/11 the league placing O’Connell attained was an improvement on that of the previous couple of years but fell short of expectations and he left the club year after taking the post.

Chris Kinnear was appointed for a second time. For a while in 2011/12, Margate were looking like genuine promotion contenders but selling the league’s top scorer, Kwesi Appiah, to Crystal Palace in January saw the club fall away to a final position of 15th.

Margate started 2012/13 in good form but Kinnear left to go to Dover in January. He was replaced by goalkeeper Craig Holloway. Margate’s play-off hopes died in the final weeks of the season with a run of five consecutive league defeats.

Why? Because today we are marking the official opening of Sporting Club Thamesmead with a free family fun day to which everyone has been invited!

As you arrived today you may have seen the giant inflatables, stilt walkers and face painters, and maybe even have smelt the aromas coming from the barbeque on the first floor balcony.

At the same time, you could also sign up for one or more of our free taster sessions.

The ad has only been up for a couple of weeks but people are already beginning to talk about it.

As well as being the new home of Thamesmead Town F.C., Sporting Club Thamesmead also has a top of the range 3G Astroturf Pitch, full size and junior grass pitches, a multi-use games area and multi-purpose studio and a sports bar café with licensed bar and Sky Sports.

THE TREATMENT ROOM:

BEHIND THEGREEN DOOR“We had to make sure that nobody had run a black cat over along the way, but Tuesday

showed we have the right to be here”

THE PHYSIO

Well, as they say, a week is a long time in football!

After throwing away a 2-0 lead away at Billericay last weekend, losing Rob Budd in goal during the warm up to a dislocated shoulder, Callum McGeehan filled in the role (thinking he looks good in orange!) and Carts also hurting his back, we returned here to play Met Police.

We still had our backlog of injured players, mind you, and we also had to make sure to check that nobody had run over a black cat somewhere along the way!

One thing we have discovered in this

league that all of the teams have an exceptional workrate - something that we must match in each and every game. Tuesday night showed that we do have the right to be in this league and all of the guys gave one-hundred-percent.

It’s not always about who scores the goals, but the energy levels of the people on the pitch who create the chances for those forwards, as well as the defensive line who hold strong, too.

We’re all proud of you chaps, so let’s keep the standards high as we continue on our Ryman Premier journey.

Anyway, to keep you up to date with the injuries - Shaggy and Theo both trained on Thursday and are chomping at the gaffer’s ear to be involved with the squad.

Ash is progressing well now that George is his food advisor to prevent him eating so many takeaways!

Dan K is taking the steady route back by undertaking the players’ sweepstake each week, so we’re all ticking along nicely.

Keep cheering on the lads and thanks for all of your support.

RYMAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE ROUND-UP:

RYMAN REVIEW

Grays Athletic snatched a late 3-1 win against Wingate & Finchley to maintain their 100 per cent winning start in the Ryman Premier on Tuesday night.

Grays took the lead when Joao Carlos scored after 28 minutes before the home side hit back midway through the second half on 68 minutes when Ahmet Rifat equalised. It took late goals from Junior Baker on 85 minutes and another from Carlos in stoppage time to take Blues back to the top of the table.

Dulwich Hamlet, Kingstonian, Maidstone United and Lewes all remain unbeaten.

Dulwich comprehensively beat Cray Wanderers 4-0 at Champion Hill. Ellis Green on 12 minutes and Erhun Oztumer a minute before the break, gave the hosts a two-goal interval lead that Harry Ottaway on 66 minutes and Oztumer again five minutes later, added to.

Kingstonian shared a goalless draw at Earlsmead against Harrow Borough while Maidstone United beat relegated Billericay Town. Orlando Smith got the Stones off to a perfect start with a goal in the first minute before Arthur Lee

equalised in the 21st minute. Frannie Collin secured the points with his winner on 56 minutes.

East Thurrock United lost their match at Rookery Hill against Lewes, the Rooks maintaining their unbeaten record with goals from Jack Dixon on 27 minutes and Ade Olorunda four minutes before full time.

Tuesday night’s results mean evey club now has at least one point on the board.

Carshalton Athletic are up and running after winning 4-2 at Nyewood Lane against Bognor Regis Town, despite falling behind to an 18th minute Craig Robson goal. Julian Owusu equalised within a minute only for Robson to restore the Rocks’ lead.

But goals in the final 11 minutes from Carshalton’s Steve Butterworth, Harry Odenetey and Tommy Bradford turned the game in the Robins’ favour.

Elsewhere, a Stuart Boardley goal on the hour mark earned Leiston victory over Hendon in Suffolk while Wealdstone won comfortably against Hampton & Richmond Borough, securing a 3-0 win at the Beaveree with a Sean Cronin penalty just before half-time, a Tommy Brewer own goal on 72 minutes and a Peter Dean strike two minutes before the end.

At the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium Liam Hope gave Enfield Town a 29th minute lead over Margate before Zac Attwood pulled the Kent side back on level terms 11 minutes after the break to eventually see the spoils shared.

After a career that began on the books at Arsenal and has included a number of spells with clubs throughout Kent, the subject of today’s feature interview has suffered heartbreak in more recent times.

Ashley Probets has not only missed out on the Mead’s promotion last season through serious injury but now also faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines, as the side embark on their maiden campaign in the Ryman Premier League.

Ashley has been suffering from a knee problem in recent times, but believes that his rehabilition will ensure that it is sooner, rather than later, that he can find himself back in first team contention.

“The rehab is going well at the moment and the physio seems happy with me,” he explained.

“I had an APL reconstruction where they took a piece out of my hamstring and put it into my knee to literally rebuild it.

“All being well, I’m hoping to be back around Christmas but it’s been really hard for me - I love football and the club so much, so I’d be lying if I said there weren’t tough days where I don’t want to come and watch.

“But I want to show my support for the boys as they deserve it for what they’ve achieved. I want to get on things as close to normal as I can.”

The surroundings here at Sporting Club Thamesmead have changed dramatically over the summer months after years of trying to get the go-ahead for it.

Having been with the club now for a number of years, it certainly marks a considerable difference from the scenery that greeted Ashley upon his

initial arrival here at Bayliss Avenue.

“It’s amazing now just how much the facilities have improved at the club,” he admitted.

“It’s obviously going to help in the longer term with the youngsters and adding quality players.”

Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw with the Met Police saw the Mead pick up their first point of the season, despite remaining at the foot of the Ryman Premier League table - for the time being, at least.

However, having broken that duck the side will be looking to push on and get their campaign underway for good now, and Ashley remains convinced that the side will go from strength to strength.

He stated: “We’ll be alright this year. There are still smiles on faces despite the tough start and, on the opening day, we all arrived with smiles and we were all buzzing, or high-fiving each other in the changing room.

“To be honest, seeing everyone so happy about playing again has just made it tougher for me to sit out, so I nearly didn’t come to the Hendon game!”

Sitting on the sidelines is one element of playing that all players would want to avoid, and the frustration is clearly something that Ashley has had to deal with, exacerbated by the success that has been enjoyed on the field.

However, it has not all been bad for the veteran Mead player, who reveals that he hasn’t had to suffer like this in the past.

“I’ve been playing as long as I can remember, but I think this is the first serious injury I’ve really had during my career,” he said. “I’ve never missed a game, but I just hope it will make me

stronger on my return.

“It is heartbreaking right now, but I’m still only twenty-eight and I’ll try to keep going until I’m sixty! Hopefully, anyway, as if I carry on like I am at the moment then my girlfriend, Hayley, will probably leave me!”

Although the transition into the Ryman Premier League has, so far, proved to be a challenging task for the Mead, the signs are positive with three good performances and the first point on the board.

The opening day defeat to Hendon was far closer than the scoreline suggests, losing a 2-0 lead at Billericay was agonising and Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw was a sign of greater resilience from the squad.

Picking up the first three-point haul will be an important landmark in the side’s progression though, and Ashley insists that it is close.

“Getting those first three points is the most important thing,” he suggested. “And we got close on Tuesday. Once we get them, hopefully we can go on a little run and, with the players we’ve got, there’s no reason why that can’t happen.

“We’ve just got to stick together and hopefully our team spirit will see us through, which is really something special here. Keith always stresses that to new recruits and, even in training, the craic is something I’ve never seen elsewhere.

“I’m convinced it helps us to going on a positive run of results - last year we had ten wins or so, so here’s hoping that we can repeat that this year.”

Naturally, we’d all like to wish Ashley a swift recovery and, all being well, his Christmas wish to return to first team action can come a bit quicker than that!

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

The Mead were in action here on Tuesday night as they hosted the Met Police, and Keith’s men gained their first point of the season with neither side managing to find the net.

Throughout both halves clear chances were at a premium for the two sides, with Danny Phillips seeing his shot saved for the Mead early on before Charlie Collins flashed a shot wide for the visitors.

With just under half an hour gone, the Mead almost found themselves a goal up when Calum McGeehan, fresh from his goalkeeping performance last weekend, rose highest to meet a cross by Ross Lover.

Having flicked the airbound ball goalwards, however, it was ruled to have been cleared off the line without crossing in full and the game remained goalless.

Shortly afterwards, Manny Osei raced clear of the Mead’s backline for the visitors but, after bearing down on goal, he watched as his shot agonisingly rebounded back off the foot of the far post.

Two more opportunities would follow for the hosts as, first, Sean Roberts saw his effort go over the bar after bursting forward before, secondly, Ross Lover’s free-kick attempt was blocked.

With half-time approaching and the game still without an opening goal, the Met’s Tony Alabi tried his luck only for his shot to also sail wide of the post and the game remained locked in a stalemate come the half-time break.

The two sides were still struggling to find a clear sight of goal as the second half developed, with Jack Hopkins (pictured) nodding wide for the Mead before both Collins and Hutchins missed with speculative efforts.

Alabi again went close for the Met mid-way through the second period as he found himself clear of the Mead’s defence but, again, he dragged his shot wide of the far post to compound

their frustration.

With ten minutes to go, Jon Main came mightily close to opening the scoring for the hosts as, again, there was a moment of confusion from a goal line incident similarly to McGeehan’s first-half chance.

This time it was McGeehan delivering the set-piece, with Lewis Tozer rising highest to send the ball back across the

face of goal. Main looped his header over the Met’s goalkeeper only to see a covering defender get there just in time.

Despite the game finishing goalless, the Mead will be pleased to have got their first point on the board after a difficult opening to their debut Ryman Premier League campaign.

Having conceded twelve goals in their

opening three fixtures, a clean sheet against a Met Police side who enjoyed a productive season last time out will undoubtedly please the boss.

All being well, the point ought to provide a solid foundation from which to build, starting this afternoon with the visit of Margate, who have made a promising start to the campaign of their own with seven points from a possible twelve to date.

KEITH’S REACTIONIt’s disappointing to only get a point after the first half, as we played really well and created the better chances. But I said to the lads that keeping a clean sheet was our main priority tonight after letting in twelve goals in the first three games.

Of the four games so far we must have deserved seven points and we’ve only got one, but that’s what this league is about. Met Police were a good side, but we battled hard and, ok, maybe we’re a little bit disappointed not to pick up all three points.

But I’m happy with that because, to be honest, with a few strange decisions at the end there I started to

think we might have got nothing.

There were two that we thought may have crossed the line, but until you’re on the goal line there’s not much you can do so I haven’t got too many problems with those, but there was a blatant back pass in the first half. I also thought the free-kick he gave on the edge of our box in the last minute was a bit of a joke, too.

Overall, I’m pleased. Our work rate and commitment as a team has been excellent in three of the four games, and hopefully we can build from here now as with players coming back from injury we’re only getting stronger.

It is tough being on zero points and

we really haven’t had the rub of the green.

On Saturday we’re 2-0 up and hit the bar, you’re thinking you’ll get three points but they came back with a winner after the ball has bounced off of the ref, the goalkeeper has dislocated his shoulder in the warm-up; we’ve had it all! So it’s a big relief.

I’ve felt for the players coming in thinking that they should have had more, but it’s the same tonight really as they’re gutted they haven’t got three points.

But I think, on reflection, they’ll go away and think we’ve started now - we’ve got a point and hopefully we can build from here.

THE YOUTH TEAM

Over the next few programmes, the Mead’s Youth Secretary and Welfare Officer, Paul Turner, will introduce us to the Junior sides that the club is running this season.

Thamesmead Town youth teams are now beginning to start their pre-season schedule building up to the start of the Kent Youth League season, which this year kicks off on Sunday 8th September.

The Ryman Youth League season began this week, with the Mead playing their first away game at Holmsdale.

Their next Ryman Youth League match will be at home to Tonbridge Angels this Thursday 29th with kick off at 7.30pm - so why not come along, back the boys and show your support for the future generation of players to pull

on the green jersey?

Meanwhile, the U16s are warming up for what looks like being a very successful season.

They’ve kicked off the season in brilliant fashion, collecting three wins within the space of a week, which culminated in a friendly fixture at Gillingham’s training ground against their full academy side.

In a thrilling game with plenty of chances, the goalkeepers proved their worth in the first half and the game remained devoid of goals by the half-time whistle.

The Meads U16s took the lead on the restart, which would go on to rouse the Gillingham academy team into action - they struck back to level the game not long after.

The Mead outfit refused to be held to a draw, though, and pressed for the winner which would eventually arrive with around a quarter of an hour to go in the game.

Against what was now an increasingly tiring Mead side, the hosts continued to pressure the Mead but found themselves unable to break the team down.

Ultimately, this was a great win for the Mead U16s against an academy side.

The next U16s fixture is against Tilbury on Sunday 25th, with a 2pm kick off at Chadfields Stadium.

Keep up to date with all the Thamesmead Teens at thamesmeadtownfc.co.uk, clicking on the Academy & Youth tab.

COMMERCIALCORNER

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the SCT. To those of you who have been enjoying the Trust’s Open Day at our magnificent new home and have decided - possibly for the first time - to stay on and see what we do here at Thamesmead Town every Saturday during the football season, a very good afternoon to you as well and here’s hoping we see plenty more of you this year! And to our friends from the Isle of Thanet who have made the trip this afternoon, I hope you enjoy the new surroundings here at Sporting Club Thamesmead - I’m sure you’ll agree that things have changed every so slightly since your last visit!

Margate will always have a place in my football affections and it will be great to see so many old friends (and that includes you, Mr Page!) this afternoon! This afternoon we welcome D&S PORT SERVICES LIMITED as our official match sponsor.

As you’ll see from the opposite page, D&S offer ‘a new experience in freight forwarding’, and its a big thank you to Steve Archer for his support. That said, sadly Steve wont be able to join us this afternoon due to ill health, and so everyone here at the Mead wishes him well. Here’s hoping that we can see him at the SCT in the near future! While we thank D&S, I’ve also got to thank members of the committee - Chairman Terry, Albert, Alan and Peter, along with our programme printers SCARBUTTS - for their player sponsorships since I last complied notes.

Gents - thank you all! If you’d like to follow their lead, please see me today or during the week and, on page 25, you can see what has been taken. Meanwhile, if you would like to become a match sponsor during the season then we still have places available - for just £100 you will not only be supporting us in our first season in the Ryman Premier, but you and your guests can enjoy the Mead experience with the committee as well, so why not?! Our next home game is on September 7th which is also the annual non-league day, so if you know anyone who has a Premier League or Championship season ticket, keep an eye in the local press and on the club’s website for our special offers that will be in place on that day! Until then, keep it green and white! Cheers,Greenie

NEXT HERE: WINGATE &

FINCHLEYThe Ryman Premier League season is really starting to get underway now with August nearing its conclusion, and the next time the Mead are in action here at Sporting Club Thamesmead is in September.

With back-to-back away trips to, firstly, Cray Wanderers on Monday and then Enfield Town next Saturday, it is another fortnight before Daniel Nielsen brings his Wingate & Finchley side to the SCT.

Nielsen (pictured) was the Blues’ captain last season before being promoted to first team coach in the summer but, going into their game with Kingstonian today, he’ll no doubt be a little disappointed to only have four points from four so far.

Nielsen has made almost 450 appearances for the Blues in a long stint with the club, and the board statement at the time of his appointment insisted that they were always keen to promote and develop

from within.

Two years ago, the Blues won a treble of the Ryman League Cup, the London Senior Cup and promotion from Division One North via the play-offs, and Nielsen is keen to replicate that success whilst in charge of the side.

“What we had in that treble-winning season was a really good club mentality,” he explained. “There was a

nice feel aout the club that year and it’s something we’ve been keen to recapture.

“But it feels a little bit like we’ve got the old gang together, and some of the playing staff from 2011 are back.”

Having got off to a perfect start with a 4-0 win over Carshalton, Nielsen will be keen for his side to quickly refind that form.

ON THE ROAD:CRAY WANDERERS

Monday 26th August 2013 Kick-off: 3.00pm Ryman Premier League 13 miles 35 minutes

Head southbound down the A20 road as far as Sidcup. Then use the A232 to Keston Common, turn right into Baston Road (B265), following it for about two miles as it becomes Hayes Street and then Hayes Lane. Cray Wanderers FC is on the right hand side of the road just after the mini roundabout.

These routes may not be the most direct, but will cut out congestion in places such as Lewisham, Catford, Bromley and keep you away from traffic jams, particularly if you are travelling by coach.
