It’s only a few weeks into the New Year and so many exciting things are happening already.

First up, OTN did its first big fund raiser – we have assisted and promoted a lot of fund raising events but this is the first one we organized one as far as I know. We had a mov-ie night at the Paragon Deerfield 8 Movie Theater (our gracious hosts and partner in the event). The event raised money for the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Awareness Fund.

The Gard Gallery, the local art school and gallery for kids, which is owned and run by the delight-ful Elizabeth Gard, was also a big help with this project. We had a great time with our movie night and raised money and awareness for Lisa Boccard’s efforts.

Next, I want to announce some special editions of OTN – this we are very excited about!

First and most important, the magazine you are reading is our third Margate special edition. This publication has been produced joint-ly with The City of Margate and in these pages you will find lots of City and community information that you will hopefully find useful and in-formative. We are mailing out over

JB’s Corner28,000 copies, making it our biggest single edition. All of our digital sub-scribers will also receive a copy – sign up for a FREE digital subscription to Our Town News publications at www.TheOurTownNews.com (left side of the page a little ways down from the top).

Other special editions will include a double issue featuring two events in Coral Springs – The BizArt Festival (March 4 at Sample and University Dr., 12 noon-4pm) and the Our Town America Festival the following weekend by the IcePlex. We may also publish an additional issue for a big concert event

– Ali Campbell’s UB40 and Toots & The Maytals at Central Broward Regional Park on March 11. Finally, we will be launching a quarterly Coconut Creek OTN issue.

As you read through this maga-zine, please take note of the advertis-ers. All of you are recognized as ex-isting or potential customers for the many businesses sponsoring this pub-lication. Those businesses owe the City of Margate “thanks” for helping under-write this publication and providing a powerful new communication tool for the community plus a powerful mar-keting platform for local businesses.

So much more happening! But, it will have to wait for a future entry. We live in vibrant exciting times of unend-ing possibilities. Remember, you can either mope around feeling sorry for yourself or treat life as an adventure where you just need to focus on what you really want to make all kinds of wonderful things happen!

In January 2012, Saveology held the grand opening of its new cor-porate headquarters in the City of Margate.

Saveology relocated its head-quarters and 550 jobs from the City of Fort Lauderdale to the City of Margate. Saveology is leasing 90,000 square feet of space that was the former home of Wyndham Vacation Resorts on Coconut Creek Parkway.

Saveology is a leading compari-son shopping destination focused on a vast array of home services, includ-ing cable, satellite television, Internet, telecommunications, home security and warranties, moving services and various financial products.

Saveology’s new state-of-the-art facility is designed to offer a fun, positive work environment to help it motivate and retain its work force. Amenities include: a gym, basket-ball court, putting green, barber-shop, and a restaurant.

In January 2011, the Margate Community Redevelopment Agency

worked with the City of Margate to have all the industrial and com-mercial properties in the Margate Redevelopment Area designated as a Brownfield site (or Margate Economic Enhancement District). Participating businesses located in the MEED can qualify for certain state and city tax incentives. However, the incentives are not paid until the jobs are actually created.

Saveology was the first business to take advantage of the program and has plans to add an addition-al 700 new jobs over the next three years. Saveology is eligible for up to $2.3 million in state and city perfor-mance-based incentives by relocating its headquarters to the economically challenged area.

The majority of the new jobs will pay $35,000 a year for service agents who will handle incoming customer calls in the call center. The other 100 positions will be corporate headquar-ters jobs that will pay over $62,000 a year.

The future of fitness is already here at Koko Fit Club, where you’ll find the world’s best 30-minute workout and machines that guide you step by step to fitness and the body you’ve always wanted.

This is not science fiction. The machines at Koko Fit Club know exactly what kind of workout you need and how you need to do it to get the best results, say Amy and Rob Sottile, owners and area de-velopers for Koko FitClub of Coral Springs & Parkland.

“What Koko members are achieving through Smartraining is amazing,” says Amy. “Many have come from personal trainers to save money, or have left their old gym because they were bored and not seeing positive changes in their bodies or their health. Once they are here, results exceed all their expectations and they are

hooked for life.”Smarttraining, put simply, is

letting the machine do the figur-ing for you once your workout is designed by a top notch person-al trainer. The gym’s revolution-ary Koko Smartraining System is like having a world-class person-al trainer on hand to coach each time you exercise.

The patented technology in-sures that you’re always doing precisely the right exercise, the right way and at the right pace for the best possible results.

You’ll accomplish this in less time -- 30-minutes or less – and for a lot less money than the cost of hiring a personal trainer.

Here’s how it works:Step One – Define your goal.

The experts at Koko Fit Club help you choose from one of five pri-mary “tracks” from which they’ll

Koko Fit Club build your custom workout plan. These are: weight loss, sports con-ditioning, total body definition, muscle building and fit & flexible, which helps restore balance and flexibility and helps with injury re-covery and prevention.

Step Two – Based on your goal, Koko creates a year-long, customized plan with workouts designed by world-class private trainers like Rob Parr, Mike Wood and Kathy Kaehler.

These fitness pros have trained hundreds of profes-sional and college athletes, and many of Hollywood’s biggest - and fittest - stars like Madonna, Demi More, Hugh Jackman and Bruce Willis.

Step Three – Come in. Plug in. Work out. Whenever you want to work out, just come in and plug in your Koko Key into any Smarttrainer, and the machine takes you through your custom workout.

While you workout on our state-of-the-art Koko strength and cardio equipment, Koko interacts and coaches you every step of the way. And Koko tracks all of your results, automatically. Each time you come back, Koko automati-cally adapts your new session to all your previous progress. So no two workouts are ever the same, which means your body and your mind stay continually challenged.

“Even confirmed former exer-cise haters are having fun at Koko FitClub,” says Amy. “Every work-out is new and engaging. Members stay motivated by pounds lost and strength gained, and know for certain that they are always getting the best workout for them, with-out ever having to plan it out for themselves.” To join Koko FitClub or try a free demonstration of the Koko Smartraining System, just walk in or call 954-796-2202, or find them on the web at coral-springs.kokofitclub.com.

By Chief Jerry A. Blough

The City of Margate, in a con-tinuing effort to enhance ser-vices to our community, is

proud to introduce the American Flag Retirement Program.

The U.S. Flag “Stars and Stripes” is the single most recog-nizable symbol of all that is good about our great country. But what do you do with “Old Glory” when the edges become frayed and the once brilliant red, white, and blue have faded into something less gleaming? The U.S. Flag Code states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fit-ting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, pref-erably by burning.” Displaying a flag in poor condition falls short of properly honoring the memory of Americans that have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of

our country. In order to offer our residents and businesses another method of retiring their well worn U. S. Flag properly and with digni-ty, the Margate Police Department in partnership with Margate Boy Scout Troop #836 and American Legion Post #157 encourages our residents and others to take part in the American Flag Retirement Program. This program provides an opportunity for Margate resi-dents and business owners to en-sure their U.S. Flag is honored in retirement with respect and cere-mony.

Residents and business own-ers are encouraged to retire tat-tered flags throughout the year by bringing them to the Margate Police Department for collec-tion and a respectful disposi-tion. Retired flags will be stored until Memorial Day in May, and Veteran’s Day in November, when

a ceremony will be conduct-ed by Boy Scout Troop #836 and American Legion Post #157, where the flags will be put to rest in accordance with the U. S. Flag Code. This program will accom-plish two goals: it will help guar-antee that the appropriate method is utilized when a resident decides to retire an American Flag, and it will encourage our residents to consistently display our “Stars and

Stripes” in good condition. Those wishing to participate in this pro-gram can turn their flags in at the police information window be-tween 8 AM and 6 PM, Monday through Thursday. For addition-al information, please contact the Office of the Chief of Police at 954-935-5401 and/or Commander Peter Napa at American Legion Post #157, e-mail [email protected] or call 954-785-4080.

By James A. Wilbur Information Technology Interim Director for the City of Margate

The City of Margate Information Technology Department (IT) consists of a dedicated team of professionals who are committed to assist and serve the City of Margate employees, as well as its businesses and citizens. The re-cent adoption of our mission state-ment and S.C.O.P.E. philosophy ex-emplifies this commitment. Our core statement is “to provide timely expert support to the City Departments that service the citizens and businesses of Margate”.

We will provide Superior sup-port and Commitment of Outstanding quality of service at a Professional lev-el while holding ourselves to the high-est Ethical standards. We hold true to our belief in the IT mission statement. The first step in realizing our new mission statement and in accordance

with the City Manager’s technology initiatives was to provide a service for both the employees and residents of Margate. The IT team installed a Wi-Fi network throughout City Hall to pro-vide resource tools to those who work within and visit here. No code is re-quired to connect; just place your de-vice in discovery mode and connect to the City Wi-Fi network.

The IT team’s next project will be providing a kiosk location for those who do not have mobile internet ac-cess. The kiosk center will feature useful information not only about the City of Margate but other areas of con-cern to our citizens.

IT’s goal is to provide technolo-gy that improves the quality of life for our employees, businesses and cit-izens. We plan on making City Hall and other facilities a “citizen friend-ly” place to visit. Please visit us at www.margatefl.com or at our mobile site, www.margatefl.com/mobile.

City Of Margate Goes Wireless

Passing through the Rock Island Road/Atlantic Boulevard in-tersection is about to get smooth-er for drivers.

If you’ve traveled through that intersection any time during the past few months, you have no-ticed the construction barriers and work in progress for an inter-section project initiated and man-aged by the Broward County Highway Construction and Engineering Division (BCHCED).

The BCHCED Rock Island Road/Atlantic Boulevard Road Improvement project will include improvements as fol-lows:

• Dual turnlanes on all four seg-ments of the inter-section for an im-proved flow of traffic.

•Replacement of the existing span wires and concrete poles with new mast arms to meet current hur-ricane standards for the mounting of traf-fic signals.

• New sig-nage and roadway markings.

• New land-scaping and irriga-tion systems to com-plement the roadway improvements.

The project ex-perienced delays due to underground utili-

ty conflicts, delivery of mast arms, and other unforeseen site condi-tions.

However, based on the latest update from BCHCED, the proj-ect is scheduled for completion in March 2012.

For additional details about the project, please contact the BCHCED at (954) 577-4555.

Mayor Pam Donovan

Dear Friends and Neighbors:It is already 2012 how time

flies. As many of you already know, I am retiring this year and this will be my last communication as your Mayor because in March we ro-tate the Mayor and someone else will be named. It has been my pleasure serving as the Mayor this past year and the 20 years as your Commissioner.

Spring is just around the cor-ner with plenty of programs and events planned.

These events are for you the resident, so please come out and join your neighbors. In February, the City of Margate and the Chamber are sponsoring the an-nual Street Festival. It is a place to meet your local businesses, see our school children perform and enjoy the fresh air. So come on out.

Also, I’m happy to announce that the City will be working with Waste Management to award two $1500 scholarships to two deserv-ing high school seniors this Spring. Vice Mayor David McLean

Dear Margate Residents and Business Owners,

Happy New Year to you and your families. The New Year has brought some new changes to our City staff. First, congratulations to Yolanda Rodriguez our newly ap-pointed City Manager and George McNeill the new Assistant City Manager.

Although her appointment is new, Yolanda has served the City for many years, and has always done a stellar performance. I know she will continue to shine in her new role. One of Yolanda’s first changes implemented as the City Manager was the creation of the Economic Development

Messages From The Margate City Commission

Plan to also join us on March 24 when the City hosts our an-nual Garage Sale at Oriole Field. The registration fee for a table is $10.00. This is a great way to earn a little spending money, do some spring cleaning while meeting new friends and neighbors.

I couldn’t be happier about welcoming Saveology to Margate. It opens its doors on February 2. This will bring up to 700 new jobs to the city over the next 3 years. Our thanks to Dennis Holste our Assistant CRA Director, for all of his hard work to get them to relo-cate their headquarters to Margate.

Just as you are able to listen to recordings of our commission meetings, starting this year, you can now also hear the CRA meet-ings online at www.margatefl.com/agendas. Speaking of the CRA I will leave you with this question: What do you want to see in our downtown area?

Please share your ideas by emailing me at [email protected] or calling 954-972-6454, or even better join me for a cup of coffee Tuesday and Sunday morn-ings from 9-11 at The Eatery SW corner of 441 and Margate Boulevard. I’m interested in what you think and have to say, and I am hear to listen.

Finally, the Margate Coconut Creek Relay for Life walk is March 30 at Monarch High School. To find a Margate team and help sup-port this effort, go to www.relay-forlife.org, enter your zip code and find a Margate team. There’s a local challenge in place that if Margate raises more money than Coconut Creek, a certain commis-sioner (yes, me) will wear a dress

and heels to a commission meet-ing. Thank you all for allowing me the honor of representing you.

Commissioner Frank Talerico

As we begin a new year, many new initiatives will be undertak-en to improve our great City. I am working with the City Clerk’s office and the Information Technology Department to increase transpar-ency in our government. Our cit-izens will have more access to in-formation and the workings of our city on the Internet.

In addition, I will be host-ing Town Hall Meetings with Homeowner’s Associations,

Condominium Associations and individual homeowners to see what our city can do to im-prove our services to our citizens. Please contact me if you are inter-ested in scheduling one of these community conversations by call-ing 954.972.6454 and speaking to our outstanding staff in the City Clerk’s office.

Also, one of our top priori-ties is defining the next steps for our Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). We all have a

Congratulations also go out to Reddy Chitepu who was officially named Director of Department of Environmental and Engineering Services (DEES) after serving as acting director for the depart-ment. Lastly, I want to welcome Jackie Wehmeyer to the Margate team.

Jackie is our new Human Resource Director who comes to the city with not only municipal experience, but credentials that will serve our city and staff well.

2012 is my 8th year in of-fice and I continue to be thankful and grateful for the opportunity to serve the residents and busi-ness owners of the city I have al-ways known as home. Although Margate is going through chang-es, it still remains a city with small town charm. I encourage you to keep Margate thriving by vis-iting our local businesses and by welcoming new businesses that come to town such as Saveology. Saveology will open its new headquarters here in Margate on February 2 with plans to add 700 new employees over the next three years. I encourage you to check them out at www.saveolo-gy.com.

As always, if I can ever be of assistance to you, please call me at 954-935-5321.

Happy New Year, can you be-lieve it is 2012! It doesn’t seem like a year has already passed since you have graced me with this job. Thank you to all those who reached out with your opin-ions and feelings about this news-letter.

The Sounds at Sundown start-ed January 14 and even though it was cold and the NFL play-off games were on, we still had a great turnout. I hope you will join us for the remainder of the Sounds of Sundown on February 11, March 10, and April 14 from 6-9 pm on the northwest corner of 441 and Margate Boulevard.

This season, we are adding Food Trucks to the Sounds of Sundown concert series for your enjoyment. Please join us and in-vite your neighbors and friends to participate.

The Green Market is going well, plan to visit on Wednesdays February 15, March 7, March 21, April 4 and April 18 or on Sundays February 26, March 11, March 25 and April 22. If you see me there ask for my recipe for roast-ed Brussels Spouts, they have been great this season!

Please check the City’s website for announcements of upcoming workshops.

I will also be working on pro-grams to streamline our govern-ment to be more efficient and less costly with the goal of saving mon-ey for our taxpayers.

As always, if you have any questions, please call me at 954-974-3117 or email me at [email protected]. God Bless All of You and God Bless the United States of America.

Commissioner Joseph

Varsallone

I’m so pleased that the transi-tion from one city manager to an-other has gone so smoothly.

I thank Mr. Porcella for his 38 years of service to our com-munity and for putting us in good financial shape to face the future.

I also welcome Yolanda Rodriguez and appreciate the programs and services she is im-plementing to help our business community and residents.

Our new Economic Development Department will be issuing an invitation to Margate real estate agents, real estate ap-praisers and general contrac-tors to learn more about the

Neighborhood Stabilization Program and how they may par-ticipate as we invest turning around foreclosed properties in town. Please check the bulletin board at www.margatefl.com for this upcoming business roundta-ble meeting.

I encourage all residents to make sure they are taking advan-tage of all the benefits of home-stead exemptions that are avail-able to them.

Please know that you do not need to travel all over the County, because representatives of the Property Appraiser’s Office are coming to Margate in February. Outreach visits are planned for Oriole Gardens, Palm Lakes, Holiday Springs and our own Northwest Focal Point Senior Center.

For a complete listing of the days and times for this service, call 954.357.6830 or visit www.bcpa.net/Events.asp.

Finally, I invite you to contact our wonderful senior center to schedule an appointment for help this tax season.

The Northwest Focal Point will once again host the Tax-Aide as-sistance program.

This is a free program run by the AARP Foundation to guide people with low to moderate in-comes through their taxes, mak-ing sure they receive all the de-ductions and credits they’re entitled to.

The service is available February 1 through April 15, and it is the nation’s largest free, vol-unteer-run tax assistance and preparation service.

Did you know that last year more than 3200 volunteers in Florida, trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, helped complete 230,000 tax re-turns for free?

Yes, it’s true and I hope you are one of the many helped this year!continued on page 13

At the Northwest Focal Point Senior Center in Margate, there is never a dull moment!

The administrators are making sure seniors are engaging in mind stimulating activities and physical exercises that keep them feeling energized. Some of the highlight-ed programs include an adult day care program and a new Zumba class for Senior Center mem-bers. Many people have not heard of the term “adult day care.” For Margate residents, this is a wonderful resource at the Northwest Focal Point Senior Center that many may not know about.

“The participant can benefit by engaging in social and therapeu-tic activities at the Center during the day while delaying or avoiding the expensive full-time institution-al care of an Assisted Living facility or Nursing Home,” said Kelly Diaz, Project Director of NW Focal Point.

Those who attend the Program are surrounded by certified nurses, as well as recreation staff members and volunteers. They participate in activities, such as exercise, bingo and trivia to stimulate the mind, as well as enjoy lunch and snacks be-fore going home at the end of the day. The Adult Day Care program is designed to accommodate the spe-cial needs of loved ones with phys-ical and/or cognitive impairments that have families that want to al-low their loved one to age in place but need assistance taking care of them during the daytime.

The Adult Day Care Program has received rave reviews. Sue

Zimbler, whose husband attends the program, states that the Center is “a marvelous respite for the caretaker and a haven for seniors who need to be active.” Herma Green’s mother attends the pro-gram and says her mother “looks forward to going there for the in-teraction with members and staff and for the activities they provide. It gives me a break from worry-ing about her and it gives me a

chance to do things for myself.” Transportation is available to and from the center and grant funding may be available to families who qualify. Private pay is available for immediate service.

The Senior Center has a new Zumba class for their seniors. Zumba, an exercise craze sweep-ing the nation, can be described as energetic Latin dancing with a twist. The classes are held on Thursdays at 6:30 PM in the Senior Center’s multi-purpose room and are $2.00 per class for members.

Programs are administered by the City of Margate and sup-ported under an agreement with the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County, Inc., through the Older Americans Act of 1965, as amended and Florida’s Community Care for the Elderly. Matching funds are provided local-ly through donations and contribu-tions with assistance by the Seniors Foundation of NW Broward, Inc.

Northwest Focal Point Senior Center Gears Up For New Year

It is with great pleasure and pride that the City of Margate each month of the school year, presents a Student and a Teacher of the Month award.

The student of the month pro-gram has been in place in our City for many years.

Each month one student from each of the four public schools in Margate is recognized for their outstanding academic achieve-ments at a city commission meet-ing.

The students are presented with a certificate of recognition and a backpack filled with various school supplies and gift cards do-nated from local businesses.

This past fall, the city kicked-off its new recognition program, Teacher of the Month. “The City

Commission wanted to recognize our teachers in the community who are doing a wonderful job of teaching our children,” explained Mayor Donovan prior to the first recognition.

With donations from the lo-cal businesses, one teacher each month is recognized at a city com-mission meeting and presented with a certificate of appreciation along with a gift card donated by a local business.

This program is a small to-ken of the admiration and pride the City of Margate shows for its teachers.

Since 1985, millions have chosen to join the American Cancer Society (ACS) to “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back” in their local Relay for Life events.

Some participants walk because they have known someone that has lost their bat-tle with cancer. Some participants walk because they are currently supporting someone in the midst of their battle. Some participants proudly wear “Survivor” shirts. Because of those proudly worn banners of success, we all continue to walk so that next year, we can see even more “Survivor” shirts!

The event will have walkers circling the tracks at Monarch High School for 24 hours starting at 6 PM on March 30, 2012. With music, tributes and presentations, participants will be sure to be entertained throughout the day and night. Walkers will pitch tents and prepare for the long journey ahead, just as those fighting the battle with cancer.

City of Margate employees are participating in 2 of the 19 teams registered on the Relay for Life webpage:

The City of Margate Public Works Department is coordinating with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in the clearing of debris from our waterways, and stabilizing canal banks in eroded areas.

The project serves to repair canal banks and remove debris caused by past storm events, such as Hurricane Wilma. This program will ensure that Margate’s canal system stays clear and structural-ly stable in maintaining our local water-way system.

Funded by an NRCS Grant, the City of Margate is able to restore over four miles of canals.

Food, fun and fabulous entertain-ment!

Come out for two days of fun at the Margate Street Festival!

The 4th annual Margate Street Festival, sponsored by the Margate Chamber of Commerce, will be held on Saturday, February 18 and Sunday, February 19, 2012. The two-day event will take place on Margate Boulevard between North State Road 7/US 441 and NW 58th Avenue. Festival hours are Saturday from noon to 10:00 p.m.; Sunday from noon to 7:00 p.m.

Activities for both days include: live music, kid’s stage programs, marching bands, carnival rides, kid’s bounce houses, food trucks, beer tent, local business vendors, craft-ers and more. In addition, Saturday’s event will include live rock music, a salute to the troops and a car show; Sunday’s offerings will include live jazz and blues music and a motor-cycle show. The Chamber anticipates

over 10,000 attendees, including res-idents of Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

“This Margate Street Festival is the largest festival held in the City of Margate and residents look for-ward to the event each year. This is one of many popular events that the Margate Community Redevelopment Agency sponsors during the year,” said Dennis Holste, Assistant Director of the Margate CRA, which is a spon-sor of the event.

The Margate Chamber of Commerce started this event four years ago to showcase local business-es and bring the community together for two days of fun!

“The goal behind the Margate Street Festival is to bring the commu-nity together and to allow businesses, vendors and local crafters to show-case their products. It’s also fun for the entire community, with bounce houses, carnival rides, a car show and a motorcycle show! There will also be all kinds of great food, and

two stages of live entertainment, in-cluding rock on Saturday, and jazz and blues on Sunday. It’s an exciting time to see everyone come out and come together as a big community party,” said John Francis, President of the Margate Chamber of Commerce.

“The feedback we’ve gotten from past events is that the street festival is a lot of fun and orient-ed towards the family. It’s great be-cause there is something for ev-erybody. Local businesses are also very excited because their prod-ucts will be seen in front of such a large crowd of people. Where else can you go where 10,000 potential customers will be walking past your booth? It’s a win-win for business people and for attendees so they can learn more about the business-es in the community. It’s a win-win for everybody,” added Francis.

But the event didn’t just come together by itself. It took a dedicat-ed group of volunteers to put togeth-er this annual festival. The Margate

Chamber of Commerce is putting on the Margate Street Festival with the support of its many sponsors, the City of Margate and the Margate CRA.

“What most people don’t realize is how much hard work it takes to put on something like this. We have had a great group of people this year and in past years that have helped put this entire festival together for the com-munity,” said Francis.

New features of the festival this year include: a motorcycle show, lo-cal food trucks and a mini-carnival.

“At the end after you’ve had a chance to walk around, meet the peo-ple and see everyone enjoying them-selves, it’s rewarding to see the com-munity come together for something like this,” said Francis.

Admission and parking is free! Parking will be available across the street at 1000 N. State Road 7 (for-mer Swap Shop).

For additional information, contact the Margate Chamber of Commerce at (954) 582-0399.

The City of Margate is continuing its efforts to revitalize neighborhoods by placing families in foreclosed homes through its Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP).

To date, the City has been able to place families in 9 of the original 12 homes purchased and rehabilitated with NSP 1 funds. The families who have pur-chased these homes are very enthused about this program. They have a sense of pride in home ownership and are amazed at the high level of quality in these homes at such an affordable price. Through this program, they were able to achieve the dream of home ownership in a time that may not have afforded such an opportu-nity.

The City recently received a new al-location of approximately $1.1 million in NSP 3 funding. This funding, lever-aged with monies received from the sale of the NSP 1 homes, will allow Margate to continue this worthwhile program by purchasing and rehabilitating addition-al homes.

The same requirements as NSP 1 will apply to this latest round of funding. Anyone who currently does not own prop-erty may apply for the program; howev-

er, total income cannot exceed 120% of the median level according to family size established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Prospective homebuyers must arrange for their own financing through tradi-tional methods, including adequate down payments and closing costs. HUD also re-quires the prospective buyers to take an 8-hour Home Buyer Education Course.

The goal of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program is to revital-ize neighborhoods that are depressed through numerous foreclosures, by pur-chasing, rehabilitating and reselling these homes in order to raise property values to respectable levels. The City of Margate has decided to continue participation in this program in order to raise the stan-dard of living within the community by in-creasing property values, while simultane-ously increasing affordable housing. The program benefits Margate residents by beautifying the community and making it one that is more desirable to live in.

3 homes from the NSP 1 purchas-es are still available for sale at various locations throughout the city in both the 33063 and 33068 zip codes. With the NSP 3 funds, our goal is to have at

I’ve agreed to “giveaway” (to any-body who asks for it) $200 worth of my services for only $20.

That’s Right - $20.I’ve helped many people in the

Coral Springs, Parkland and North Broward area feel better and live healthier, more productive lives through chiropractic care. I would now like to introduce you to the many benefits my profession has to offer. For instance, chiropractic care may be able to help you if you’re suffering from any of the following conditions.• Migraine headaches• Lower-back pain• Sciatica• Carpal Tunnel• Neck pain• Arm Numbness• Arthritis• Herniated Discs• Degenerative Discs• “Whiplash”

And a whole host of other prob-lems, ranging from dizziness to ring-ing in the ears. These symptoms can be caused whenever the vertebrae in your spine are out of alignment be-cause this “misalignment” directly affects your nervous system.

Fortunately, if you’re suffering from such problems or similar con-ditions right now, they may be re-lieved or eliminated by proper chiro-practic treatment (commonly called “adjustments”).

So if you’ve always wanted to “check out” chiropractic care and see what it can do for you, now is the best time to do so because…

Right now $20 will get you all the services I normally charge my new patients $200 for!

For a Limited Time Only

Feb 8th - March 8th $20.00 will get you all

of the services. I normally charge new patients $200.00 for!!

What does this offer include? Everything. Take a look at what you’ll get…• An in-depth private consultation about

your health and well being• A chiropractic spinal examination…• A set of specialized X-rays to determine

if a misalignment in your spine is caus-ing your pain or symptoms… (Nobody gives these kinds of X-rays FREE. They would usually cost you at least $100)…

• An analysis of your X-rays and spinal exam results so we can see what needs to be done to help.

• Helpful literature that shows how your body works and why you experience pain.

• Answers to all your most probing ques-tions about chiropractic care and what it can do for you...

The appointment won’t take long at all. And like I said, we normally charge $200 for this (most of which just covers the cost of the set of X-rays). But now, as part of this one time offer, you can come in and find out for certain if you need chiroprac-tic care and how it can help you eliminate the pain you’re feeling. Before you come in, though, you’ll probably want to know a little bit more about me.

DOES CHIROPRACTIC REALLY WORK

Absolutely! When you come in I’ll provide you with studies that show why chiropractic is a preferred method of treatment. But what provides the best “proof ” on how well chiropractic works is what the patient says about it.

FIBROMYALGIA, HEADACHES &

LOW BACK PAIN“Coral Springs Spine & Nerve has

helped decrease my lower back pain sub-stantially! I originally came in because I have Fibromyalgia, headaches and low back pain. I feel that the chiropractic care has helped me by improving my pain, muscle spasms, and improve the ringing in my ears. I’m even sleeping better.I have been to so many doctors that haven’t lis-tened to me and I feel that Dr. Craig and Dr. Aliyah really listen and really care!”-Sincerely, Elizabeth Hauser,Photographer, Margate

SHOULDER PAIN, ARM PAIN & NECK PAIN

“When shoulder and arm pain started to affect my house work, I came into Coral Springs Spine & Nerve seeking re-lief. Chiropractic Care has taken my pain away and I am able to clean my house and not be cautious about doing daily ac-tivities anymore. I would describe CSSN as a kind and caring place. The amaz-ing part of Chiropractic Care is that… IT WORKS!”-Thank You,Marcia Jacobs, Homemaker, Coral Springs

SCIATICA & LOW BACK PAIN

“Before I started chiropractic care I had pain going down my leg and limited range of motion. Now I can wake up without severe pain, so I get my day moving faster! I have learned that although lifetime wellness is a process for me, the doctors at CSSN continue to reinforce and educate me. I can even play more tennis with my daughter. I am amazed at how chiropractic care has worked so fast!” -Thank you,Patrick Barbanes,IT Manager, Coral Springs

HERNIATED DISCS & STENOSIS

“I had been suffering with low back pain for a VERY long time, so I decided to check out Coral Springs Spine & Nerve after a friend referred me. I tried every

outlet for my pain and nothing had worked. I also had epidurals that failed and left me still in pain. Before coming to CSSN, I could not sit comfortably on the sofa, I could not walk for long peri-ods of time and I could not pick up my kids without excruciating pain. Chiro-practic Care has significantly decreased my pain and I can go about my daily routine normally. I am amazed how, in such a short amount of time, I have seen improvement!”-Thank you so much,Ann Gables,Banker, Coral Springs

When Trish McCarty lost her parents, the last thing on her mind was fixing

up their home and finding a seller. But she had to put aside her

grief and find time to take care of all the necessities.

Knowing how difficult it can be, Trish McCarty started Estate Home Services, which provides any and all services for preparing to sell the home of a loved one that has either passed away or is mov-ing into a nursing home or assist-ed living facility.

“We provide any and all the ser-vices the family deems necessary to put the house on the market,” said McCarty.

“This idea came when my mother passed away and my sib-lings and I were going through her personal items and didn’t know what to do with everything; and then when my father died, we had to get the house ready to put up for sale. It was a lot of work and many people don’t know what to do or don’t live in the same state. I think there’s really a need for it,”

said McCarty. McCarty, who started the busi-

ness with a quest to help others, can manage the entire process and since her husband is in the contracting business can find the resources needed.

Services vary from emptying the entire house, finding apprais-ers, realtors, moving compa-nies, repairing the home, prop-erty checks if the house is vacant, lawn or pool service, and main-taining the home while on the market.

“I try to provide as many re-sources as possible to the fami-ly who just lost a loved one or a couple moving from their home into an assisted living center,” said McCarty.

“I’ve gone through this twice, when my mother and when my father died; and I understand what other families are going through; it’s not an easy process, but, at some point you have to get strong and move on,” said McCarty.

Estate Home Services makes sure to give family members as much time as they need and

spends as much time as needed with each family.

“When the family is ready, they can give us a call. Sometimes the initial call is that family members live in another state and just need us to check on the property and make sure everything is se-cure,” said McCarty, adding,

“If they don’t have a lawn ser-vice or pool service I can pro-vide that as well. I can man-age as much or as little as they want me to. I can facili-tate whatever they want done.”

McCarty finds an inner reward in being able to help families in their time of need.

“I feel in my heart that people need this help, and I want to help people. Also, I have been in man-agement for 30 years so I know how to manage a situation and make sure everything gets taken care of, with respect and dignity at all times,” she said.

If you’re looking to get away from the usual sub shop experience, Firehouse Subs is here to the rescue.

Started in 2005 by two fire-fighting brothers – Chris and Robin Sorensen – the Margate location at 5516 W Sample Road in Peppertree Plaza is here to serve.

“This is a restaurant where you are greeted when you come in, and treated during your stay. We pride ourselves not just in the quality of our food, but in the professionalism and courtesy of our staff,” says own-er Ted Tallman.

Indeed, from the time you enter Firehouse Subs, the aroma of fresh-ly toasted breads and steamed meats and cheeses let you know that this isn’t just another “sub shop.”

From their signature Hook & Ladder Sub – a combination of smoked turkey breast, Virginia hon-ey ham and Monterey

Jack, to their New York Steamer – a melody of corned beef brisket, pastrami, melted provolone, mus-

tard, mayo and Italian dressing – there’s more than enough on the Firehouse menu to keep you com-ing back again and again.

Firehouse Subs’ secret to un-locking the natural flavors of their meats and cheeses is by steaming them, not running them through an industrial toaster. The results take a few moments longer than the com-petition, but the wait is more than worth it.

Meats don’t end up burnt and crispy, and cheese melts without browning and flaking like they do when toasted.

The steaming process helps to bring out flavors, rather than burn-ing them off.

All subs are “Fully Involved,” un-less otherwise stated, which means that you’ll get lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and mustard with a pickle on the side, but you’re free to custom-ize which toppings you want to suit your taste.

All subs can be made into com-

bos, which include chips and a foun-tain drink. Firehouse features the new Coca-Cola Freestyle machine which offers more than 120 differ-ent brands. So not only do they of-fer Diet Coke and Coke Zero but they also have Diet Coke with Lemon, or Vanilla Coke Zero. They also offer more than 60 non-carbonated op-tions, too.

With plenty of eat-in dining space, complete with two TVs and unique, firefighter memorabilia, in-cluding Dalmatian-print tabletops, Firehouse Subs goes all out to en-sure that you’re not just getting a good sub, but a great dining expe-rience as well.

Another unique feature of Firehouse Subs, in keeping with the fire theme, is the hot sauce bar, with dozens of spicy selections to choose from, all conveniently la-beled from 1-10 in intensity. That’s a personal touch of the Founders, and there’s even a sauce named af-ter one of them – Capt. Sorensen’s Datil Pepper Hot Sauce.

If you’re planning a luncheon or party, Firehouse Subs also caters

events of all sizes with sub platters, salad and dessert platters box lunch-es and more.

Firehouse can deliver to your of-fice or event, and set up the site right. Firehouse Subs not only serves de-licious subs but also serves the lo-cal community by sponsoring local athletic teams, charities and First Responders.

The restaurant sells their pickle buckets for just $2 each with 100% of the monies directed to their char-itable organization, the Public Safety Foundation.

Since its founding in 2005, this Foundation has donated more than $3.1 million to local police and fire departments, EMS providers and local educational programs. Donations are also accepted at the counter through a “change box.”

To see all of their menu offer-ings (including their award-winning chili) and to order on-line, go to www.FirehouseSubs.com. Carry-out orders can be placed at 954-532-3464. Special catering packages are available which includes warm and cold sub options.

The City of Margate Public Works Department utilized a grant from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program (EECBG) to in-stall Energy Star approved cool roof system and solar panel systems at two locations: Margate City Hall and the Margate Community Center.

The Cool Roof System is designed to reduce the cooling cost for each building by reflecting the suns rays away from the building with an esti-mated savings from the cool roof in-stallation at approximately 42,000 kWh annually.

The Solar panels are designed to collect energy from the sun and off-set the energy needs to operate each facility. The solar panels will produce 48,000 kWh annually and will result in an annual reduction of 38 tons of GHG CO2 emissions.

This project is completed and serves as a fine example for residents, businesses, and neighboring commu-nities of responsible energy use and conservation. At each location, there is a monitor that displays how much energy is being collected by the solar panels.

Hi to all the businesses and res-idents of the City of Margate and a Happy New Year! The event will start at noon both days and end at 10:00 pm with Rock Saturday and Sunday’s event is dedicated to Blues & Jazz, with continuous performers both days on two stages with Sunday ending at 7:00 pm.

So bring the whole family to a weekend of continuous en-tertainment and FUN!

On February 11th at 7:00 pm, there is a networking event at the Tiki Bar hosted by David McLean, locat-ed at 238 N. SR 7 (441) in Margate. Come out and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow business people.

On February 29th the Chamber is teaming up with seven other area Chambers to hold a “Joint Chamber Networking & Showcase”. This year’s event is being expanded to accom-modate more businesses, which sold out fast last year and had over 500 at-

tendees. The event will be held at City Furniture, 701 N. Hiatus Rd, Tamarac. Contact Jaime Milner at 954-582-0399 or at our website, margate-chamber.org, to register for this ex-citing event.

The Chamber is looking for new members, if you are interested in joining and sharing the experienc-es of the Chamber, please contact Jaime at the above number or stop into our office at 1025 N. SR 7 (441) the Chevy Chase Plaza. We’re there from 9 to 5, Monday through Friday. In addition, if you are interested in attending our monthly breakfast or lunch or being a sponsor, please give us a call!

Just a quick update, the Business Sign Code changes initiated by your Chamber of Commerce will be pre-sented for their final vote next week at the Commission meeting and should pass to be immediately implemented by the City.

Thanks to all who worked so hard on that project and to the City Commissioners for their support and insight to put these codes into effect.

I want to welcome Saveology into our business community bringing new job opportunities, and we look forward to working with them in the future as they reach out and support the community of Margate.

In closing, I look forward to see-ing you all at these events and until next time keep smiling and remem-ber to patronize your local merchants and businesses around Margate!

IS LOOKING FOR GREAT ATHLETES! IS LOOKING FOR GREAT ATHLETES! IS LOOKING FOR GREAT ATHLETES! IS LOOKING FOR GREAT ATHLETES! IS LOOKING FOR GREAT ATHLETES! IS LOOKING FOR GREAT ATHLETES!

By Eric KantorOTN Tennis Pro

For a loving nurturing rela-tionship, communication is what makes you or ‘BREAKS’ you! O.K., so the pun is intended there. No, this is not my relationship article. I’m talking about having commu-nication with your doubles partner.

Great doubles is played when partners are confident in each other. They know where each will be moving to as well as hitting to. If you’ve had the chance to see the pros play, you’ll notice how they always seem to be in the right spot at the right time. They move to ar-eas of the court, covering each other as if they were two dance partners that have honed their movements together for years. How can we learn from the pros, especially if we’re playing with dif-ferent partners?

Obviously the pros are the pros, their skill levels are much higher and they move a lot quick-er then we do, but we can learn from what they do between ev-ery point. They talk to each other. Literally between each and every point they play, the partners will go to each other and strategize about the next point they’re getting ready to play. If you are the serving team, between points get together with your partner and talk about where you’d like to serve. Out wide, down the “T”, maybe into the body. This way, the net player will have an idea of what type of return may come back. By know-ing that your partner is going to serve wide, the net player would then know to take a step over and cover the line or pick off the cross court return. If you’re returning a serve, you can still communicate about where you’re going to try

and return to. Tell your partner to be ready for the opposing net player to receive your return. Let your partner know that you’re go-ing to try and get the return down to the feet of your opponent. Your partner then can look for a high volley from the net rusher. What if you want to try the lob return? Your partner would be very hap-py to know that that shot is com-ing, especially if you don’t execute the shot very well.

Maybe you don’t want to talk to your partner every point. Maybe your partner is the silent type. You can try using hand signals. Hand signals are used mostly while serv-ing, although, you can use them on returns as well. Talk with your partner before the match begins and figure a system that works easily for the two of you. When I played, I used the finger pointing in a direction for where I wanted my partner to serve. A hand open would mean I would stay after the serve was hit, a closed fist would mean I would “POACH”, and the hand open and closing rapidly would mean a “FAKE POACH.” Of course you could come up with many different signals that suited you and your partner.

When you see the best dou-bles teams play, there are cer-tain traits that are common. I see a lot of communication and a lot of fun being had. They seem to be truly enjoying themselves out on the court, and that’s what tennis should be about. A good time had by all on the court. So go out to the court with your partner, whether a new one or one you’ve played with for years, and see if you can have a much closer relationship, huh, partnership, huh, you know what I mean!

On January 20, 2012, the Margate-Coconut Creek Fire Rescue Department received notice of a $553,774 Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) feder-al grant award under the Operation and Safety appropriation for the purchase of cardiac monitors and defibrillators. The grant application approved by City Manager Frank Porcella was written in cooperation with Margate’s region-al partner, the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Rescue Department. More specif-ically, 19 replacement units of LifePak 15 Cardiac Monitor/Defibrillators were approved for funding to meet the local, regional need for new equipment.“I be-lieve that our cooperative and region-al strategy to deliver quality Emergency Services is the primary reason for this award. In these tough economic times, it’s great to be able to tell our local taxpayers that they don’t need to bear the necessary equipment replacement costs,” said Fire Chief Tony Stravino. The Assistance to Firefighter Grant (AFG) provides financial assistance di-rectly to Fire Departments to enhance capabilities with respect to fire and fire-related hazards. AFG’s primary goal is to help fire departments meet their firefighting and emergency response

needs. AFG seeks to support agencies by providing tools and resources nec-essary to more effectively protect life and safety of the public and response personnel from fire and all other haz-ards. Margate’s current cardiac mon-itor/defibrillators were purchased in 2000. The new units will be vital piec-es of EMS equipment that serve as mul-tipurpose tools. The units take blood pressures, check for oxygen saturation, monitor heart rhythms, can be utilized as an external pacemaker, in addition to defibrillating (shocking) a lethal heart arrhythmia to convert to a non-lethal (survivable) heart rhythm. The cardiac monitor/defibrillators are a necessary part of Margate’s Advanced Life Support treatment for patients. Currently, ap-proximately 80% of all regional call vol-ume is emergency medical call related. The new units will improve patient care. Residents should be reassured that this equipment will be utilized many times in the daily performance of the Fire Rescue Department’s duties and ulti-mately, will save lives. This grant allows the Margate-Coconut Creek Fire Rescue Department to continue to provide ex-cellent Emergency Medical Services while offsetting operational expenses.

What is it that God desires from mankind? What is God’s greatest pur-pose for creating mankind? I truly be-lieve that the Answer to these questions is very simple….God desires commu-nion and relationship with His creation. In Genesis 2:8 (NIV), it reads: Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden and there He put the man He had formed. The word Eden when it is translated from the original Hebrew word has several meanings. It means, the spot, the place, open door and passage way.

So God’s original intent and de-sire is revealed and clearly stated to us through this word Eden. Eden is not the name of the garden, Eden is the place, the spot, the open door and the passage way. So when God places Adam, which means mankind in Eden, God allows us to understand His desire and primary purpose. God’s desire and primary pur-pose is that He wants to commune and be in a relationship with mankind…. with you. So when God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden, He put Adam in the spot, the place, the open door and the

passage way, where Adam could com-mune and enjoy a direct connection and a personal relationship with a Holy God!

But, when Adam sinned, he lost the spot, the place, the open door and the passage way to enjoy commu-nion and relationship directly with God. So God’s desire and primary pur-pose is that He wants to reconnect and commune and be in relationship with His creation, not religion, but relation-ship, not denomination, but relation-ship, not man made rules and regula-tions, but relationship!

This is why Jesus came. He came as the second Adam (1Corinthians 15:45, 46) in order that we would be put back into the place, the spot, the open door and the passage way back into relation-ship with God through Jesus Christ.

My prayer for you right now is that you would be in relationship with God! That’s our sole purpose at ARCC, we want to reconnect people with God. May God bless you and keep you in my prayer.

“America was salivating for the story.” And you’ll discover what this tale is as you enjoy Secrets to the Grave. Tami Hoag is a lit-erary success. She is the author of 16 books; I was previously en-tertained by her, and was like-

wise with her latest production. And the book appeared on the Publishers Weekly bestseller list.

The pace of Secrets to the Grave is brisk. The somewhat short chapters only add to the alacrity of the plotline.

While the size of the dramatis personae is for the most part tol-erable, at times it tends to be a bit crowded. As the novel progresses,

however, new character introduc-tions thankfully slow to a trickle.

Word-pictures are an effec-tive part of Secrets to the Grave. At the book’s beginning, “The scene was a plain old paint-ing, soft and impressionistic: the golden grass, the dark trees, bruise-purple mountains in the background, and the whisper-blue sky strewn with long, thin, pink-tinted clouds: the small white house with its old tile roof.”

Through the mouths of her

characters, the author voices her opinions about computers. After noting that “...computers are the way of the future”, she then jot the following snippet of dialogue,

“When are we going to get comput-ers?” “When they become neces-sary and free.”

“That would make a hell of a movie...but it doesn’t make any sense.” After you devour Secrets to the Grave, you can then decide who should be the male and fe-male leads in the cinema version.
