MISSION STATEMENTOur mission is to provide an inspirational learning experience that celebrates engineering, science, and technology, allowing participants to develop skill sets and personal qualities that lead them to future success in scientific, technical, and engineering fields.

FLL CORE VALUES> We are a team

> We do the work to find the solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors

> We know our coaches and mentors do not have all the answers; we learn together

> We honor the spirit of friendly sportsmanship

> What we discover is more important than what we win

> We share our experiences with others

> We display Gracious Professionalism™ & Coopertition™ in everything we do

> We have fun!

CODE OF CONDUCTIt is our expectation that teams, guests, mentors, and coaches will conduct themselves in a manner of good citizenship and Gracious Professionalism™, including respect for the Iowa State University campus, property, volunteers, teams, Iowa FLL staff and other participants. Participation is an opportunity to engage with other teams and individuals while encouraging camaraderie.

We are excited to see what teams have done with ANIMAL ALLIESSM and to have so many participants in this year’s tournament!

Have you ever seen so many people excited about solving real-world problems and engineering? We feel truly fortunate to work with committed students, individuals, and organizations that share our goal of inspiring the next generation to celebrate engineering, science, and technology. We commend you for assuming an active role in the development of today’s youth into tomorrow’s talented workforce. Tournaments such as this provide participants the opportunity to see that they are part of something larger than their own team. Ultimately, it is our hope that team members see tournaments as a microcosm of society where people work together to solve our world’s challenges.

Thank you for your attendance at this event. The participants today appreciate your positive support in their work of changing the culture, one brick at a time.

ROBOT CHALLENGE EVENT SCHEDULEFLL teams have had approximately 4 months to design, build, program, and test a robot made entirely from LEGO® parts, making use of the LEGO® Mindstorms robotics kits. Their robots are completely autonomous (they are not remote controlled).

Teams have 2.5 minutes per round to complete as many challenges as they can, in any order.

Each team participates in 3 matches. Teams keep the single best score from these 3 matches.

Teams are penalized for touching their robot during a match if it is out of base.

THINK ABOUT IT FLL is for children ages 9–14. FLL Jr. is for children ages 6–10. Teams form in all sorts of ways: school groups, clubs, civic organizations, or groups of friends. Registration for new teams runs from May to September each year for FLL and from August through April for FLL Jr. You do not need to know exactly who will be on the team, but early registration allows you to start communicating and learning more about how to make your team successful. There are many resources to help new and experienced coaches online at www.firstinspires.org. Also, feel free to contact Iowa FLL with any questions at [email protected].

STARTING FLLFAQ: WHAT IS FIRST®?FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a non-profit dedicated to promoting engineering and science to youth through fun, hands-on programs, such as FIRST LEGO League (FLL).

WHO CAN START A TEAM?Anyone can start or coach a team! In fact, most FIRST coaches aren’t engineers—they are parents, teachers, or volunteers who see the value of kids participating in meaningful problem solving.

HOW OFTEN DO TEAMS MEET?Teams can meet as often as they would like. Most FIRST teams meet twice a week for a couple of hours. Often, teams will meet more regularly as they get closer to a tournament.

WHAT IS GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM™?Ask a FLL Team! Gracious Professionalism™ is at the heart of FIRST LEGO League. All participants treat each other with respect, help each other, and collaborate so everyone can succeed.

IS FLL JUST ABOUT BUILDING ROBOTS?No way! The robot is just one important part of FLL. Teams also do a research project, learn presentation skills, explore technical & engineering concepts, and develop teamwork skills. As we tell FLL teams: “What we learn is more important than what we win.”
