To further literacy, Chicago Lights Literacy and Arts at the Near

North Magnet Cluster Schools engaged students through the use of

Accelerated Reader, which encourages independent reading and rewards

students for achieving reading goals.

More than 80 Chicago Lights friends walked in the Greater Chicago Food Depository Hunger Walk, raising the most any group ever has

in the walk—$28,000—to alleviate hunger.

In2It Café, a time for creative enrichment and a nutritious meal before one-to-one tutoring, set the tone for each evening, providing creative learning

in arts and crafts, knitting, photography, drama, chess, dance, and more!

Celebrating a strong legacy of preparing students for high school graduation, college, and a career, Chicago Lights Tutoring marked its 45th anniversary.

Student participation in Chicago Lights Tutoring increased ten percent with an

expanded pool of tutors.

Job Training and Development, an initiative of Chicago Lights Tutoring, added an

advanced component to further prepare older students for job searches and careers.

Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center received a capacity-building grant from the Greater Chicago Food Depository to improve the food pantry and distribution.

Twenty-five percent more bag lunches were distributed, and 60 percent more individuals were served in 2009 than in the previous year.

Sunday Night Supper relocated from the Dining Room to a larger, more-

welcoming space, elevating hospitality and increasing the number of people

served from 100 to 150.

Chicago Lights Literacy and Arts at the Near North Magnet Cluster Schools

offered twice-a-week drama and dance classes throughout the school year,

supplementing the limited arts curricula in the Chicago Public Schools.

Chicago Lights Center for Whole Health (CWH) used Nintendo Wii to make physical and mental exercise fun and build community.

T’ai Chi and Nia classes provided by CWH promoted healthy aging and an active lifestyle.

Chicago Lights Summer Day formed a new partnership with Get Healthy

Chicago, offering physical activities such as Pilates and jump rope. Summer Day also

incorporated science, hip hop, and digital music production.

Chicago Lights Summer Day added science, hip hop, and digital music to its six-week curriculum of academic classes and arts activities for

100 first through eighth graders.

The number of Cabrini-Green residents who had their own individual gardening plots at the Chicago Avenue Community

Garden increased in 2009. To further outreach, through an expanded relationship with Growing Power, the garden is now

being transformed into a year-round food-producing Urban Farm.

Increased input and leadership from members of Chicago Lights Center for Life and Learning (CLL) expanded participation

in educational minicourses and widened hospitality. Specially designed courses in the CLL have increased

the participation of men.

Free Write received a $25,000 grant from Chicago Community Trust that expanded programming to include

creative writing workshops, guest authors, ceramics, and

dance after school.
