The main theme of IAVS 2012 will be “Climate Change and Vegetation Science”, although papers onall aspects of vegetation science will be welcome. There will be sessions that address new theory, methodology and application of vegetation ecology at a range of spatial and temporal scales. Aparticular focus will be vegetation diversity and dynamics in natural and cultural landscapes ofcoastal-island regions in the context of global climate change.

We are confident that every participant’s intellectual pursuits will be fully satisfied with the scientificprogram, field excursions and social events that we are planning.

Jeollanam-do Province is located in the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula, a regionrenowned for its natural beauty and diverse ecosystems, including extensive tidal flats and offshoreislands. It is also a region rich in Korean traditions and customs such as the local cuisine, Pansori(traditional Korean opera), and slow life.

Jeollanam-do is located in the southwestern part of the Korean Peninsula and is the center of tourism for this region. It has a stunning natural landscape including 2,000 offshore islands along a 6,400km coast. Within Korea it is referred toas ‘a natural museum’because of the wide range of natural areas and examples of cultural heritage that have beenpreserved.

This region contains many important sites typifying warm temperate vegetation in both island and coastal regions. Ofspecial note is the UNESCO Shinan Dadohae Biosphere Reserve, which supports a range of environmental gradients andvegetation types including evergreen coniferous forests, temperate evergreen broadleaf forests, dunes and tidal flats.

Jeollanam-do is also famous for its well-preserved cultural heritage such as the “Unlimsanbang”, the studio of the artistHuh You who lived during the Chosun Dynasty (the name “Ullimsanbang”means “forest of mist”, inspired by thesurrounding misty landscape), and “Nakahn Fortress Town”which shows the life style of the Chosun Dynasty.

Hyundai Hotel Mokpo ★★★★★Newly constructed, the Hotel Hyundai Mokpo is located near the entrance of theKumho tide embankment in Youngam-gun. Due to the unique location andscenic view, it is an ideal venue for the IAVS 2012.

Biotic Impoverishment and Climate Change in Islands: Global Causes of Forest Decline?

Prof. Mueller-Dombois was born in Germany in 1925. After serving in WW II, his passion forforestry led him to Canada, where ultimately he earned a PhD in Forest Ecology from theUniversity of British Columbia. He moved to the University of Hawai‘i in 1963, and remained onthe Botany faculty until his “retirement”in 1990. His scholarly work defies simple categorization. He was the great synthesizer of the European and American traditions in plant ecology, throughhis classic book Aims and Methods of Vegetation Ecology (with Heinz Ellenberg). He pursuedfield research on ‘ohi’a dieback in Hawaiian forests, and developed a novel explanation for thephenomenon (and other forest diebacks in other regions). With Ray Fosberg, he produced amonumental analysis of the Vegetation of the Tropical Pacific Islands, a work of scholarship thatmost likely will never be matched. That research drew him into the Pacific beyond Hawai‘i,where he helped to establish the PABITRA (Pacific Asia Biodiversity Transect) project. He hasauthored more than 200 publications, many of which are highly cited (led by Aims andMethods, which has been cited more than 5000 times).

Surveys of Korean flora have identified more than 4,500 species on the peninsula, of which more than 500 are endemic.Biotic provinces of the southern peninsula are commonly divided between warm-temperate and cool-temperate zones. The warm-temperate zone horizontally prevails over the southern coast and islands, including Jejudo Island. It is largelytypified by broad-leaved evergreens.

The cool-temperate zone, which is subdivided into three subzones, namely southern/submontane (SOSU),central/montane (CEMO), and northern/altimontane (NOAL), covers the great majority of the peninsula, aside from thesouthern coast and high mountains. The cool-temperate SOSU subzone is co-dominated by the red pine and variousbroad-leaved deciduous trees, whereas the CEMO subzone is dominated by summer-green oaks. The vegetation of theNOAL subzone is characterized by five-leaved Korean pine and Mongolian oak. The subalpine vegetation is found alongthe peninsula’s northern fringe and in the high mountains, including the upper reaches of Hallasan National Park onJejudo Island. Major evergreen conifers in this area include several firs including endemic Abies koreana. Much of thisvegetation is shared with Manchuria mixed forests.

During pre-symposium excursions, the ecological characteristics of temperate deciduous forest will be explored. On-site visitswill be made to the protected forests of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve areas, such as Gwangneung and Mt. SeorakNational Park, Ulleungdo Island’s unusual vegetation and coastal vegetation of the West Sea.

Post-symposium excursions will visit representative examples of Korea’s evergreen broad-leaved forest areas such asDadohae, Jejudo Island together with Jindo Island which are regarded as having the best preserved natural coastalvegetation in Korea. Additionally, participants will be given the opportunity to explore Korea’s potential naturalvegetation, relic forest and traditional rural forest.

Mid-symposium excursions have been planned to visit Korea’s most representative eco-regions in Jeollanam-do Provinceto look at its natural and cultural landscapes, and to gain a feeling of a harmonious living combination of man and nature.

(organized by Prof. Dr. Do-Soon CHO et al.)

Dadohae Marine National Park includes about 400 islands, including Hongdo and Heuksando of Shinan-gun County,Jeollanam-do Province. The oceanic climate of the park resulted in coexistence of evergreen-broadleaf, deciduous, andconiferous trees. Islands, tidal flats and residents in the region have harmoniously coexisted and created a distinctivetopography, vegetation, biodiversity and ocean culture, earning them the right to become a UNESCO biosphere reservein 2009. The post-excursion group will also walk around an arboretum in Wando to examine plants growing in thesouthern warm temperate forests. Jeju-do is the southern most island in Korea, and is a UNESCO World NaturalHeritage, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and a global geopark. It is a volcanic island with diverse geologic featuresincluding numerous parasitic cones (oreums) and large systems of lava tubes. Mt. Hallasan, which rises 1,950 m abovesea level with a crater lake at the summit, shows clear vegetation zones ranging from subalpine vegetation near thesummit, to temperate deciduous forests at the mid-elevation and to warm temperate evergreen hardwood vegetationnear the coasts. Many alpine or arctic plants, many of which are endemic now, moved toward the summit after thePleistocene. For further information, please contact the scientific organizer at [email protected].
