Dear Nebraska ASHRAE Members,
As our 2014-2015 ASHRAE year is winding down, I want to thank the
Nebraska Chapter Board, committee chairs and co-chairs, and volunteers
for their dedication and commitment to attending meetings, planning
chapter meetings, organizing events, raising money for ASHRAE
Research and Scholarships and keeping our chapter running well. It takes
many people working together in Omaha and in Lincoln to keep our
chapter going strong.
I would like to highlight a few events coming up as our year winds down:
Dodgeball Tournament
May 16th will be the annual dodgeball tournament. This is a fundraiser for
the Nebraska ASHRAE Scholarship Fund. Please see more details
included in the newsletter.
Nebraska Chapter 75th Anniversary Celebration
Please join us the evening of the 18th at Anthony’s. We will spend the
evening celebrating our chapter’s milestone. We will have hor d’oeuvres,
cocktails, a short program and music by Jessica Errett. Please see more
details included in the newsletter.
ASHRAE Golf Outing
Our annual golf outing will be held Monday, June 15th. This year we will
again be playing at Iron Horse Golf Club in Ashland, NE. The format will
again be a 4-person scramble.
2015 Chapters Regional Conference
The Black Hills Area Chapter will be hosting CRC this summer. This year
CRC is a little earlier in order to avoid conflicting with the famous
motorcycle rally in Sturgis. The dates are Thursday, July 23th through
July 25th. You can register for the conference at
http://www.blackhillsashrae.org/crc/
We are starting to plan for our 2015-2016 ASHRAE year! If you are
interested in getting more involved with our chapter now is the perfect
time. We have several committee and co-chair opportunities. Please
contact me if you have any questions or comments.
Thanks again for supporting ASHRAE!
Sincerely,
Jeff Backemeyer

Grassroots Government Affairs Committee T H E Q U A D R E N N I A L E N E R G Y R E V I E W ( Q E R )
On January 9, 2014, President Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum directing the administration to conduct a Quadrennial
Energy Review (QER). As described in the President’s Climate Action Plan, this first-ever review focuses on energy infrastructure
and identifies the threats, risks, and opportunities for U.S. energy and climate security, enabling the federal government to translate
policy goals into a set of integrated actions.
The United States has one of the most advanced energy systems in the world, supplying the reliable, affordable, and increasingly
clean power and fuels that underpin every facet of the Nation’s economy and way of life. The energy transmission, storage, and
distribution infrastructure -- defined here as the infrastructure that links energy supplies, energy carriers, or energy by-products to
intermediate and end users -- is large, complex, and interdependent. It includes approximately 2.6 million miles of interstate and
intrastate pipelines; 414 natural gas storage facilities; 330 ports handling crude petroleum and refined petroleum products; and more
than 140,000 miles of railways that handle crude petroleum, refined petroleum products, LNG and coal. The electrical component of
the Nation’s TS&D infrastructure links more than 19,000 individual generators with a capacity of a megawatt or more (sited at over
7,000 operational power plants), with over 642,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines and 6.3 million miles of distribution lines
The first installment of the QER examines how to modernize our nation’s energy infrastructure to promote economic competitiveness,
energy security and environmental responsibility, and is focused on energy transmission, storage, and distribution (TS&D), the
networks of pipelines, wires, storage, waterways, railroads, and other facilities that form the backbone of our energy system. The QER
seeks to identify vulnerabilities in the system and proposes major policy recommendations and investments to replace, expand, and
modernize infrastructure where appropriate.

A p p r o p r i a t i o n s B i l l The House Appropriations Committee today approved the fiscal year 2016 Energy and Water Development, and Related Agencies
Appropriations bill, which will now head to the House floor for consideration. The legislation provides annual funding for national
defense nuclear weapons activities, the Army Corps of Engineers, various programs under the Department of Energy (DOE), and
other related agencies.
The bill totals $35.4 billion – $1.2 billion above the fiscal year 2015 enacted level and $633 million below the President’s request.
“This bill will help ensure the safety, security, and reliability of our nation’s nuclear stockpile, help drive this nation towards energy
independence, and help improve the infrastructure that facilitates American commerce,” House Appropriations
Committee Chairman Hal Rogers said. “It is a well-rounded, responsible bill, and I urge my colleagues to support it as it moves
through the process.”
Energy and Water Subcommittee Chairman Mike Simpson also commented on the importance of the bill:
“This is a responsible bill that prioritizes national security needs and improving our nation's infrastructure within tight budget caps,”
Chairman Simpson said. “It makes critical investments in the maintenance and safety of our nuclear weapons stockpile, while also
funding important infrastructure projects and research that will increase U.S. economic competitiveness and growth."
The following amendments to the bill were adopted by the full committee today:
Rep. Simpson – The manager’s amendment makes technical and non-controversial changes to the report. The amendment was
adopted on a voice vote.
Rep. Simpson – The amendment decreases funds for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and provides $27.5 million for the Smart
Grid Research and Development, Cybersecurity for Energy Delivery Systems, and Transformer Resilience and Advanced
Components programs. The amendment was adopted on a voice vote.
Rep. Valadao – The amendment adds language to the bill and report to require specific deadlines on certain Bureau of Reclamation
water studies. The amendment was adopted on a voice vote.
Rep. Herrera Beutler – The amendment changes language in the report to improve the specificity of funding for certain nuclear sites.
The amendment was adopted on a voice vote.
The bill was approved by the Committee on a voice vote.

ASHRAE Research currently has well over 100 projects, valued at over
$15 million, being conducted around the world. Region IX alone has
over $2.6 million worth of research taking place in its schools and
companies. Whether you specialize in IAQ, green building, tools and
applications or refrigeration, ASHRAE has research projects focused
on your field and the specific topics that affect you and your business
the most. If you are interested in a list of the current research projects
let us know and we can send them to you.
As a local chapter we are currently at just under a quarter of our goal
with the research campaign ending on June 30, 2015. Please consider
either renewing your personal and corporate donations or starting a
new donation. In the coming weeks, we intend to contact all local
chapter members and companies in our area which benefit from
ASHRAE Research.
Again, a personal Thank you for your past support and we hope the
Research Promotions can count on your support this year for these
vital projects. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to
