Words are a powerful thing. With a few chosen words we can build relationships, countries, people, and kingdoms. With a few chosen words or word we can destroy anyone’s reputation. Words are a powerful thing.

Today’s readings focus on the mystery of the word. The first reading indicates that the word of God never returns empty handed from the earth. Once it touches the earth, the grounds, and the creation it requires a response, it requires a harvest. The word of God comes to us from God Himself and makes fertile everything it touches. From heavens it permeates all aspects of creation and the result is life, and life in abundance.

“Creation is groaning in labor pains”, says the second reading, just like a woman as she approaches the miracle of giving birth. And if creation is groaning so are we and this world in which we live. Creation and humanity is groaning, hungry, thirsty for wisdom, peace, justice and retribution among other things. We see it in the Middle East and the conflict between the Nation of Israel and the State of Palestine. We see it in the religious struggles between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland; brother killing brother in the name of God. We see it in the volatile political situation among many African countries. We see it here in the States in the abuses towards the African Americans, immigrants, and other minorities. The words spoken among these are occupation, violence, destruction, and death. Creation is hurting and so are we.

But in light of this the gospel speaks to us about another word. Jesus in his wisdom and love for the people he serves spoke in parables. Knowing that he was not speaking to scholars and teachers of the Law, his followers were mainly fishermen, housewives, farmers and the little ones. He gave examples based on the reality of the people he preached to. Jesus, who himself is the Word of God, “and the word became flesh”, exemplifies the word of God also like a seed. The seed, the message, the good news, is scattered, planted, disseminated, and sown to the sower’s whim. And once that seed, that Word of God touches the ground, it demands a response. That’s where we step in!

We are that ground! That ground complex and diversified where the harvest will make itself real, alive, fruitful. That is if we open our hearts to the Word. We can receive the word of God with superficial joy and never develop any roots or deeper relationship with the Lord. We can allow external influences or our personal tribulations to take that word away or permit this world and all its allurements to turn it to nothing in our lives.

We are to consider the reality and challenges of this present time as transitory. This is not about denial. This is about a new understanding of what surrounds us. What we are only able to see and to experience do not begin to embody the fullness of the reality of the kingdom of God. But if we settle only by what we see or have now, without considering the bigger reality of being participants of the eternal Eucharistic banquet then we are not fulfilling our mission or our identity.

In the same way that the Word of God speaks about God and about Jesus, our Lord and Savior, it also speaks about who we are. We are also the word in the measure that we allow the seed to fall in our souls and produce fruit and nourishment for ourselves and for others. Let us imitate Jesus, in his endeavor to proclaim the good news, in his missionary disposition and in his desire to serve others. Only in such we can be seed, only in such we can bear fruit, only in such we can be word. And the word became flesh!

Las palabras son algo poderoso. Con unas pocas palabras elegidas podemos construir relaciones, países, personas y reinos. Con unas pocas palabras o palabras elegidas podemos destruir la reputación de cualquiera. Las palabras son algo poderoso.

Las lecturas de hoy se centran en el misterio de la palabra. La primera lectura indica que la palabra de Dios nunca regresa con las manos vacías de la tierra. Una vez que toca la tierra, los terrenos y la creación requiere una respuesta, requiere una cosecha. La Palabra de Dios nos llega de Dios mismo y hace fértil todo lo que toca. Desde los cielos permea todos los aspectos de la creación y el resultado es la vida, y la vida en abundancia.

"La creación está gimiendo con dolores de parto", dice la segunda lectura, al igual que una mujer mientras se acerca al milagro de dar a luz. Y si la creación se queja, igualmente nosotros y este mundo en el que vivimos nos quejamos. La creación y la humanidad gimen, tiene hambre y sed de sabiduría, paz, justicia y retribución, entre otras cosas. Lo vemos en el Medio Oriente y el conflicto entre la Nación de Israel y el Estado de Palestina. Lo vemos en las luchas religiosas entre católicos y protestantes en Irlanda; hermano matando hermano en nombre de Dios. Lo vemos en la volátil situación política de muchos

países africanos. Lo vemos en los atropellos hacia la comunidad afroamericana, inmigrantes y otras minorías. Las palabras que se dicen entre ellas son ocupación, violencia, destrucción y muerte. La creación está doliendo y nosotros también.

Pero a la luz de esto, el Evangelio nos habla de otra palabra. Jesús, en su sabiduría y amor por las personas a las que sirve, habló en parábolas. Sabiendo que no estaba hablando con eruditos y maestros de la Ley, sus seguidores eran principalmente pescadores, amas de casa, agricultores y los más pequeños. Dio ejemplos basados en la realidad de las personas a las que predicó. Jesús, que él mismo es la Palabra de Dios, "y el Verbo se hizo carne", ejemplifica la palabra de Dios también como una semilla. La semilla, el mensaje, la buena nueva, se dispersa, se planta, se difunde y se siembra al capricho del sembrador. Y una vez que esa semilla, esa palabra de Dios toca el suelo, exige una respuesta. ¡Ahí es donde intervenimos! ¡Somos ese terreno! Ese terreno complejo y

diversificado donde la cosecha se hará real, viva, fructífera. Eso es si abrimos nuestros corazones a su Palabra. Podemos recibir la palabra de Dios con gozo superficial y nunca desarrollar raíces o relaciones más profundas con el Señor. Podemos permitir que las

influencias externas o nuestras tribulaciones personales quiten esa palabra o permitan que este mundo y todos sus atractivos la conviertan en nada en nuestra vida.

Debemos considerar la realidad y los desafíos de este tiempo presente como transitorios. No se trata de negarlos. Se trata de una nueva comprensión de lo que nos rodea. Lo que sólo podemos ver y experimentar no comienzan a encarnar la plenitud de la realidad del reino de Dios. Pero si nos conformamos sólo con lo que vemos o tenemos ahora, sin considerar la realidad más grande de ser participantes del eterno banquete eucarístico, entonces no estamos cumpliendo ni con nuestra misión ni con nuestra identidad.

De la misma manera que la Palabra de Dios habla de Dios y de Jesús, nuestro Señor y Salvador, también habla de quiénes somos. También somos la palabra en la medida de que permitimos que la semilla caiga en nuestras almas y produzca frutos y alimento para nosotros mismos y para los demás. Imitemos a Jesús, en su esfuerzo por anunciar la buena nueva, en su carácter misionero y en su deseo de servir a los demás. Sólo así podemos ser semillas, sólo así podemos dar frutos, sólo así podemos ser palabra. ¡Y el Verbo se hizo hombre!

This article will share how the COVID-19 pandemic affected our 2019-20 parish religious education program, and how it is impacting our program moving forward. Our last CCD class was scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 25th, but instead the Governor of Illinois issued a Stay-At-Home Order on Saturday, March 14th, which forced us to suspend our in-person sessions at the Monsignor Thiele Center. As with every other parish in the Archdiocese, we had to come up with alternative methods of providing catechetical instruction to our children and youth. We did so through a combination of catechist-led Zoom sessions and a steady stream of downloaded lesson plan material available for free by various online Catholic publications. As a result of this unprecedented situation, we have yet to celebrate the Sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation, but now know they will take place soon as we move along in the process of reopening our parish to the public. Meanwhile, the new program year brings with it many challenges and uncertainties. Serious planning needs to take place to determine the most appropriate model and format to follow, which will in turn help energize and inspire a deep and abiding desire to grow closer to Jesus and live a life of Christian discipleship. We remain hopeful and know that, as in the past, we can count on your faithful support.

Este artículo compartirá cómo la pandemia COVID-19 afectó nuestro programa de educación religiosa parroquial 2019-20, y el impacto que ha tenido en nuestro programa hacia delante. Nuestra última clase de CCD estaba programada para el sábado 25 de abril, pero en cambio el Gobernador de Illinois emitió una Orden de Estancia en el Hogar el sábado 14 de marzo, el cual nos obligó a suspender nuestras sesiones en persona en el Centro Monseñor Thiele. Como toda parroquia de la Arquidiócesis, tuvimos que elaborar métodos alternativos para proporcionar instrucción catequética a nuestros niños y jóvenes. Lo hicimos a través de una combinación de sesiones de Zoom dirigidas por las catequistas y un flujo constante de material de planes de enseñanza descargadas y disponible de forma gratuita por varias publicaciones católicas en línea. Como resultado de esta situación sin precedentes, aún no hemos logrado celebrar los Sacramentos de la Primera Eucaristía y la Confirmación, pero ya sabemos que tendrán lugar pronto según avancemos en el proceso de reabrir nuestra parroquia al público. Mientras tanto, el nuevo año del programa trae consigo muchos desafíos e incertidumbres. Es necesario llevar a cabo una planificación seria para determinar el modelo y el formato más apropiado a seguir, el que a su vez ayudará a energizar e inspirar en nuestros estudiantes un deseo profundo y perdurable de acercarse a Jesús y vivir una vida de discipulado cristiano. Seguimos esperanzados y sabemos que, como en el pasado, podemos contar con su apoyo fiel.

Reopening of the Church – Mass Schedule Change

As we approach our date for reopening of the Church, we have concluded that in order to keep all guidelines of social distancing and cleaning between each Mass; we will have to temporarily change our mass schedule in order to keep everyone safe and secure. We have been very fortunate to have the continued support of our parishioners and friends and we hope this will not be an inconvenience to anyone. We are also working on recording the Mass and then posting it online later in the day.

Effective July 19 our Mass Schedule will be as follows:

Sunday Mass in English: 10:00am Sunday Mass in Spanish: 8:00am and 12:00pm

Our maximum capacity per Mass will not surpass 84 people. You will be required to call in and/or register online to attend the Masses. For everyone to have an opportunity to worship in the Church, you will only be allowed to sign up for one mass at a time. The registration for the Masses will open on Wednesday of each week and close on Friday. Please feel free to contact the parish office with any questions or concerns.

We are currently working on reopening the church for some of our weekday Masses sometime in August 2020. Once more details are available, we will publish them on the bulletin, our webpage and on our Facebook page.

Please note that we need at least 6 volunteers per Mass for setup, greet and cleanup. If you are interested in helping, please call the parish office at 773-278-4808 and leave your name and phone number.

Reapertura de la Iglesia - Cambio de Horario de Misa

A medida que nos acercamos a nuestra fecha de reapertura de la Iglesia, hemos concluido que para mantener todas las pautas de distanciamiento social y limpieza entre cada Misa; tendremos que cambiar temporalmente nuestro horario de misas para mantener a todos a salvo y seguros. Hemos sido muy afortunados de contar con el apoyo continuo de nuestros feligreses y amigos y esperamos que esto no sea un inconveniente para nadie. También estamos trabajando en grabar la misa y luego publicarla en línea más tarde en el día.

A partir del 19 de julio, nuestro horario de misas será el siguiente:

Misa dominical en inglés: 10:00 a.m. Misa dominical en español: 8:00 a.m. y 12:00 p.m.

Nuestra capacidad máxima por misa no superará las 84 personas. Deberá llamar y/o registrarse en línea para asistir a las misas. Para que todos tengan la oportunidad de adorar en la Iglesia, sólo se les permitirá inscribirse en una misa a la vez. La inscripción para las Misas se abrirá el miércoles de cada semana y se cerrará el viernes. No dude en comunicarse con la oficina de la parroquia si tiene alguna pregunta o inquietud.

Actualmente estamos trabajando para reabrir la iglesia para algunas de nuestras misas entre semana en agosto de 2020. Una vez que haya más detalles disponibles, los publicaremos en el boletín, nuestra página web y nuestra página de Facebook.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP RECOGNIZE GOD

IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS Focus on the Good When I was a child, my mother had a set of sculptures resembling three human heads. One head had hands over the ears, one had hands over the eyes, and one had hands over the mouth. Of course, they depicted the phrase, “Hear no evil; see no evil; speak no evil.” I have seen these images repeated many times since then, usually as the monkey heads from a Japanese proverb, which would have probably seemed a little less creepy to me when I was a small child. Apparently, there is no consensus about the full meaning or certain origin of these three images nor the phrase. At the very least, it causes us to reflect on the need to avoid evil and look for the good in things. As I have lived my life, I have come to believe there are more people who lives their lives in a contrary manner to these images. It is not that they seek evil, but it is as if they “see no good, hear no good, and speak no good.” Gossiping is the way they pass the time, and they always seem to find the negative in people and situations. Being a good steward certainly means that we do not seek evil, but more than that, it means that we see the abundance of good things all around us. These gifts of God are big and little, profound and ordinary. By seeing the world in this way, we begin to change our personalities and our overall disposition. We always need to follow a new proverb: see all the good, hear all the good, and speak about the good. Amen. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

LA CORRESPONSABILIDAD DIARIA RECONOCE A DIOS

EN TUS MOMENTOS ORDINARIOS Enfócate en lo Bueno Cuando era niño, mi madre tenía un conjunto de esculturas que se asemejan a tres cabezas humanas. Una cabeza tenía las manos sobre los oídos, una tenía las manos sobre los ojos y la otra tenía las manos sobre la boca. Por supuesto, representaban la frase: "No escuchar el mal; no ver el mal; no hablar mal.” Desde entonces, he visto estas imágenes repetidas muchas veces, generalmente como las cabezas de mono de un proverbio japonés, lo que probablemente me habría parecido un poco menos espeluznante cuando era un niño pequeño. Aparentemente, no hay consenso sobre el significado completo o el cierto origen de estas tres imágenes ni de la frase. Por lo menos, nos hace reflexionar sobre la necesidad de evitar el mal y buscar lo bueno en las cosas.
