From the Pastor’s Desk… Climbing a mountain within the context of the scriptures always signifies closeness to God. As we go up we are lifted up, elevated, we arise to a new reality. Symbolically, we become closer to God. Physically we move from one mortal state "down there", to an encounter with the Divine "up there". Such was Elijah's desire when he went to the cave in the mountain. He had an encounter with God, not in the strong wind, not in the earthquake, which are extraordinary events, but in an ordinary and peaceful whispering sound. Such was Jesus' intention. The gospel tells us that Jesus, after performing the miracle of the multiplication of the bread and fish, after feeding thousands of people, he retires to the mountain to pray, to meditate, to have an encounter with himself, the Divine. A storm blows up and the boat that contained disciples is in danger. Panic takes over the group who call upon Jesus as he is walking over the waters. Jesus invites Peter to walk over the waters with him and he does so at the beginning, confident and unafraid. But as he realizes the strength of the storm his courage fails him, doubts about his security and starts to sink. Jesus promptly answers his cry of distress and comes to his aid with a loving rebuke, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" When confronted with stress and pressure we can all identify with Peter and his temptation to despair. A sudden turn of events in life can disturb and threaten the security of our families and beloved ones. At such moments our faith may be weakened and may be in need to hear those consoling words of Christ asking us not to be afraid. And it is in moments like such were we are to turn to God and we "go up the mountain", not at our last resort but as our first one. This is about believing that Christ is prepared to help us at all times and under all circumstances, not only in our hour of desperation. And what does he asks from us? He asks from us simply to believe, to take a chance on Jesus, to have faith. When Peter accepted the Lord's invitation to come across the waters he was taking a risk, it was a leap of faith, a journey into the unknown. We have too been invited by Christ to follow him with conviction and courage through the storms of life and personal trials. We must remember that Jerusalem leads to the cross, and the cross leads to an empty sepulcher. This is how you can see down below and up above. And just when we may be overwhelmed by a particular situation which is a source of anguish let us remember that the Lord is always waiting for us with outreached arms at all times. Whenever we may feel like saying, "Lord save me", may we also be able to hear and to feel his response, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."

Del Escritorio del Párroco… Subir una montaña dentro del contexto de las escrituras significa siempre cercanía a Dios. Al subir somos levantados, elevados, nos levantamos a una nueva realidad. Simbólicamente, nos acercamos a Dios. Físicamente nos movemos de un estado mortal "allá abajo", a un encuentro con lo Divino "allá arriba". Tal fue el deseo de Elías cuando fue a la cueva en la montaña. Tenía un encuentro con Dios, no en el viento fuerte, no en el terremoto, que son eventos extraordinarios, sino en un susurro ordinario y pacífico. Tal fue la intención de Jesús. El evangelio nos dice

que Jesús, después de realizar el milagro de la multiplicación del pan y el pescado, después de alimentar a miles de personas, se retira a la montaña para orar, meditar, tener un encuentro con sí mismo, el Divino. Una tormenta sopla y el barco que contenía a los discípulos está en peligro. El pánico se apodera del grupo que invoca a Jesús mientras camina sobre las aguas. Jesús invita a Pedro a caminar sobre las aguas con él y lo hace al principio, seguro y sin temor. Pero cuando se da cuenta de la fuerza de la tormenta, su valor le falla, duda de su seguridad y comienza a hundirse. Jesús responde rápidamente a su grito de angustia y viene en su ayuda con una amable reprensión: "Oh, de poca fe, ¿por qué dudaste?" Cuando nos enfrentamos con el estrés y la presión, todos podemos identificarnos con Pedro y su tentación de desesperar. Un giro brusco de acontecimientos en la vida puede perturbar y amenazar la seguridad de nuestras familias y seres queridos. En tales momentos nuestra fe puede debilitarse y puede estar en necesidad de escuchar las consoladoras palabras de Cristo pidiéndonos que no tengamos miedo. Y es en momentos como esos que debemos volvernos a Dios y "subimos a la montaña", no en nuestro último recurso, sino como nuestro primero. Se trata de creer que Cristo está dispuesto a ayudarnos en todo momento y en todas las circunstancias, no sólo en nuestra hora de desesperación. ¿Y qué nos pide? Él nos pide simplemente creer, tener una oportunidad en Jesús, tener fe. Cuando Pedro aceptó la invitación del Señor a cruzar las aguas, él se estaba arriesgando, era un salto de fe, un viaje hacia lo desconocido. También hemos sido invitados por Cristo a seguirlo con convicción y coraje a través de las tormentas de la vida y las pruebas personales. Debemos recordar que Jerusalén lleva a la cruz, y la cruz lleva a un sepulcro vacío. Así es como se puede ver abajo y arriba. Y justo cuando podemos estar abrumados por una situación particular que es una fuente de angustia, recordemos que el Señor siempre nos está esperando con los brazos extendidos en todo momento. Siempre que tengamos ganas de decir: "Señor, sálvame", podamos también oír y sentir su respuesta: "Tened valentía, soy yo, no tengáis miedo".

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS NOTICIAS DEL CATECISMO The Lord's Peace be with you! With all that is happening these days, we can easily fall into the habit of purposely distracting ourselves with things that-in the big picture-aren’t all that important. I often catch myself failing to make better use of my time when, instead of exercising or sitting to read a good book that challenges me spiritually I make eating comfort food and/while watching television comedies my top priority. Having recently been informed by my doctor that I am pre-diabetic, those priorities will now have to be revisited. But it shouldn’t have to be this way. We shouldn’t need to be shocked into making the healthy choices we long have known lead to a happier life. Why do we do this to ourselves? Let’s call it by its proper name: sloth. One of the Seven Capital Sins, the Catechism defines sloth as “a culpable lack of physical or spiritual effort; acedia or laziness.” The best antidote to this and other vices is to practice opposing virtues. Instead of engaging in mindless self-indulgence, we should look for ways to doing what is pleasing to our God. This weekend is our annual Sharing Parish Picnic with St. Hubert. Meanwhile, locally our CCD Registration Drive is taking place during each weekend mass. Volunteers are needed for these parish events. We surely encourage you to take advantage of these and future opportunities to take an active role in supporting your faith community while growing in a life of heroic virtue. ¡La Paz del Señor esté con ustedes! Con todo lo que está sucediendo estos días, fácilmente podemos caer en el hábito de deliberadamente distraernos con cosas que-en el panorama general-no son tan importantes. A menudo descubro que en vez de hacer mejor uso del tiempo haciendo ejercicio o leyendo un buen libro espiritual, me paso comiendo comida ligera y mirando comedias en la televisión. Habiendo recientemente recibido la noticia de que soy pre-diabético, tendré que ajustar mis prioridades. Pero no debe ser de esta manera. No deberíamos primero pasar un susto para entonces decidir las sanas opciones que siempre hemos sabido nos conducen hacia una vida más feliz. ¿Por qué nos hacemos esto? Vamos a llamarlo por su nombre: pereza. Uno de los Siete Pecados Capitales, el Catecismo define la pereza como "una falta culpable de esfuerzo físico o espiritual; acedia o vagancia". El mejor antídoto contra este y otros vicios es practicar las virtudes opuestas. En lugar de participar sin pensamiento alguno en indulgencia-propia, debemos buscar maneras de hacer lo que es agradable a nuestro Dios. Este fin de semana es nuestro Día de Campo con nuestra parroquia hermana San Huberto, mientras que en cada misa de nuestra parroquia se llevará a cabo nuestra campaña de inscripción de Catequesis. Se necesitan voluntarios para ambos eventos. De seguro les exhortamos a que se animen a tomar ventaja de estas y futuras oportunidades para ejercer un papel activo en apoyar a su comunidad de fe y a la vez crecer en una vida de virtud heroica. ¡Qué Dios les bendiga! Offices Moving to Thiele Center

As mentioned in last week’s bulletin, as of September 1, 2017 our parish offices will relocate to the Monsignor Thiele Center. The offices for the Pastor, Business Manager, Secretary, Social Services, and Catechesis will now be all together under one roof. We’ve eliminated room 101 and converted the room into two offices and a small conference room. Our hours of operation will continue to be the same as well as our telephone numbers. The Rectory will continue to function as a Priest residence. There will be some minor adjustments which will require patience and understanding. The move will require the following: • Our offices will be closed from Monday, August

28-Thursday, August 31. We will not be answering doors nor telephone calls. We will be in the area since we will be moving furniture back and forth. In an emergency you can call and leave a voice mail which we will be checking throughout the day.

• We will require the help of volunteers. We will need strong able bodied persons to help move the heavy furniture over. In order to keep the cost down, we opted to keep our existing furniture and move as much as possible over to the new offices.

Oficinas a Trasladarse al Centro Thiele

Como se mencionó en el boletín de la semana pasada, para el 1ero de septiembre de 2017 nuestras oficinas parroquiales se trasladarán al Centro Monseñor Thiele. Las oficinas para el Párroco, Gerente de Oficinas, Secretaria, Servicios Sociales, y Catequesis estarán todas juntas bajo un

mismo techo. Hemos eliminado el salón 101 y convertimos el salón en dos oficinas y un pequeño salón de conferencias. Nuestras horas de operación continuarán igual, al igual que los números de teléfono. La Rectoría continuará funcionando como la Residencia de los Sacerdotes. Habrá pequeños ajustes que requerirán paciencia y entendimiento. La mudanza requerirá lo siguiente: • Nuestras oficinas permanecerán cerradas del lunes,

28 de agosto al jueves, 31 de agosto. No contestaremos la puerta ni las llamadas telefónicas. Estaremos en el área ya que estaremos mudando los muebles de ida y vuelta. En caso de emergencia, puede llamar y dejar un correo de voz la cual estaremos verificando durante todo el día.

• Necesitaremos la ayuda de voluntarios. Necesitaremos personas fuertes para ayudar a mover los muebles pesados. Con el fin de mantener los costos bajos, optamos por mantener nuestros muebles existentes y mudar tanto como sea posible a las nuevas oficinas.

Right of Christian Initiation for Adults RCIA is designed for those who are considering joining the Catholic Church through celebrating the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. The process welcomes adults who have never been baptized or have been baptized in another Christian tradition, and those who have been baptized in the Roman Catholic Church and need to receive one of the sacraments of initiation. RCIA classes begin Tuesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. in room 301 of the Monsignor Thiele Center.
