With Palm Sunday we begin our journey into Holy Week. It starts with Jesus’ triumphant entry into the holy city of Jerusalem. For him going to Jerusalem had a sense of mission and purpose. By entering the holy city, Jesus knew that God’s plan for the salvation of humankind was arriving at its conclusion. It meant the institution of the Eucharist and his arrest on Holy Thursday and his humiliation, trial and death on the cross in Good Friday. Jesus went to the cross understanding the nature and purpose of his pain, the kind of pain that we have no control over and necessary for the purification and salvation of us all. So he abandons himself to God’s plan without any sense of fatalism or sense of tragic lost, trusting in his Father’s good will. Simultaneously we have the cheerful people who are a gathered in the city to celebrate the religious feast of Unleavened Bread proclaiming Jesus as their earthly king. Exuberant shouts of “Hosanna to the son of David” were delivered by many… Many of them on Good Friday will be calling for his death.

The passion presents the ultimate humbling of Jesus. The physical cruelty, the loneliness and isolation of Jesus on his way to the Golgotha will be recapitulated in his words, “My God, my God, why have your forsaken me?” But as his humanity is put to rest, his Divinity becomes more luminous within the darkness of the sepulcher that welcomed him and shall eventually remain empty.

Behind the story of the cross rests our own story of salvation. We must never forget that Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice took place so that we might have new life. Jesus, the one who was handed over from Caiaphas to Pilate, from Pilate to Herod, and finally from Pilate to the mob, has handed over resurrection and everlasting life to us. Let us therefore be with the one who has revealed the depth of his deeper love, the Son of Man, Son of David and our king who declares his kingship and perfect love as he hangs from the cross. Today let us enter with Jesus to Jerusalem and be part of the drama of our redemption not as mere spectators but as witnesses to our King of kings! Let us therefore walk with Jesus to Jerusalem, to the cross and out of an empty sepulcher!

Con el domingo de Ramos comenzamos nuestra jornada de la semana Santa. Todo empieza con la entrada triunfal de Jesús en la santa ciudad de Jerusalén. Para él, ir a Jerusalén tenía un aire de misión y propósito. Al entrar a la cuidad santa, Jesús sabía que el pan para la salvación para la humanidad estaba llegando a su plenitud. Esto envolvía su arresto y la institución de la Eucaristía en Jueves Santo y su humillación, juicio y muerte en la cruz en Viernes Santo. Jesús fue a la cruz entendiendo la naturaleza y propósito de su dolor, el tipo de dolor del cual no tenemos control y que resulta necesario para la purificación y salvación nuestra. Así pue se abandonó al plan de Dios sin ningún sentido de fatalismo o sentido de perdida trágica, confiando en la buena

voluntad de Dios Padre. Simultáneamente vemos el pueblo alegre reunido para celebrar el festival religioso de los Panes Ácimos proclamándolo como su rey

terrenal. Exuberantes gritos de “Hosanna al Hijo de David” fueron elevados por muchos. .. Muchos de ellos en viernes Santo gritaran pidiendo su muerte.

La pasión presenta al mundo la más extrema humillación de Jesús. La crueldad física, la soledad y la enajenación de Jesús de camino al Gólgota serán recapituladas en sus palabras “Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿Por qué me has abandonado?” Pero mientras su humanidad estaba siendo apagada, su

Divinidad brillaba aún más dentro de la oscuridad del sepulcro que lo recibió y que quedará vacío.

Detrás de la historia de la cruz reside nuestra historia de salvación. No podemos olvidar que ultimadamente el sacrifico de Jesús cruz se llevó a cabo para que tuviésemos nueva vida. Jesús quien fue pasado de manos de Caifás a Pilato, de Pilatos a Herodes y finalmente de Pilatos a la turba, nos pasa la resurrección y la vida eterna. Luego entonces estemos con aquel quien reveló un amor profundo, el Hijo del Hombre, el Hijo de David y nuestro Rey quien declaró su reinado y amor perfecto colgando del madero de la cruz. ¡Hoy entremos a Jerusalén con Jesús y seamos parte del drama de nuestra redención no como meros espectadores pero como testigos del Rey de reyes! Luego entonces caminemos con Jesús a Jerusalén, a la cruz y salgamos con el dejando un sepulcro vacío.

Our Lenten sacrifice kicks into high gear this weekend as we begin the holiest week of the Church’s liturgical calendar with Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion. This penitential season has taken a somewhat unique nature given the impact the COVID-19 crisis has had on our country, state, city, and faith community. We have all been affected in one way or another, our Religious Education program notwithstanding. There is good news, however. Despite the fact we aren’t able to make use of the Monsignor Thiele Center, efforts are underway to transition to an in-home catechesis format. Last week over 70 catechetical leaders took part in a virtual town hall presentation facilitated by the Archdiocese’s Office of Lifelong Formation and vicariate Lifelong Formation Coordinators. This will be followed by weekly virtual support meetings for each vicariate designed to provide: Strategies for transitioning ministry to virtual and in-

home approaches Developing a communication plan Safe environment best practices and resources Planned ongoing support and resourcing from the

Este fin de semana comienza la semana más sagrada del calendario litúrgico de la Iglesia con el Domingo de Ramos de la Pasión del Señor. Esta temporada penitencial ha tomado una naturaleza única y diferente dado el impacto que la crisis COVID-19 ha tenido en nuestro país, estado, ciudad y comunidad de fe. Todos hemos sido afectados de una manera u otra, incluyendo nuestro programa de Educación Religiosa. Sin embargo, hay buenas noticias. Random Acts of Kindness

This week’s recommendations include more self-directed acts of kindness that are aligned with recent national and local recommendations, as well as from the archdiocese. 1. Cooperate in social distancing / staying at home to protect your

health and the health of others. 2. Use recommended health practices, like hand washing to

prevent the spread of this virus. 3. Spend time on your own emotional well-being. Now is the time

to give yourself pep talks to keep a positive, optimistic attitude. This may need some conscious effort.

4. Spend time daily in meditation, prayer (more on this in #5) and giving thanks/gratitude.

5. Cardinal Cupich has asked that our churches to ring their bells daily, every 3 hours between 9 am and 9 pm. Listen for the bells in your neighborhood or set the timer on your phone and unify in prayer for our own health and well-being and that of our family and friends, communities, country and the world.

6. Say prayers of thanks and for the continued efforts and success of our health care workers and researchers in their work toward prevention, cure and care for the sick.

7. Be judicious in how much media you consume. Too much can be counterproductive in terms of keeping an optimistic attitude.

8. When you do use social media, share uplifting, positive messages and encouragement.

9. When possible, get some fresh air, take a walk even if it’s just around the block.

10. If you feel lonely, pick up the phone and call someone. If possible, make it a video call.

11. If you know of someone who is shut in and possibly lonely, give him/her a call.

12. The U.S. mail is still operating, send someone a note or card to say you’re thinking of him/her.

13. The only thing worse than being alone is wishing you were! You may be spending far more time with family than you ever thought necessary , work to be patient and kind with one another.

14. Even if you don’t like doing so, play board games or other video games with your family. It’s a great opportunity to talk about how everyone is feeling during these stressful days.

15. Send a card to police and firefighters who continue to protect and help our communities.

16. Putting up Christmas lights outside is trending to communicate a positive message of hope.

17. We all have home projects we say we’ll get to when we have time. If you do have more time on your hands (some may actually have less with children at home), get a project/s done. An organized or improved home space always makes us feel better (after it’s done).

18. The Archdiocese is live streaming Mass daily. Continue to unify in faith through these Masses.

19. Put a brief, encouraging message or smiley face on a house or car window to wish others well.

20. Watch movies with encouraging messages that uplift you and your family.

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

This year Easter is different and remains the same…Due to current circumstances concerning the actual health crisis, we have moved into a physical and spiritual exile. During this Lent, we have been prevented of the many gifts of our Catholicism particularly the celebration and reception of the Eucharist. In a way, we have left time and space behind in the fasting of all that is pure, life-giving and holy. We have shared into Jesus’ sepulcher, quiet, still, forced to see our faces and the face of Christ.

However, despite this shroud of darkness we must remember who we are! We are children of the light and recipients of the promises of eternal life. Although the public celebration of Easter this year is marked by health guidelines, we must not abstain from celebrating Easter in our hearts. This means rejoicing in the fact that not even sickness nor death itself have the last word. It is Jesus, our resurrected Jesus, who shall see us through as we contemplate and celebrate an empty sepulcher. For this we shout to the world “The Lord is risen… Alleluia!

This year the reaffirmation of our faith, our own sense of personal and domestic prayer and your support to our beloved community of St. Aloysius Gonzaga is crucial for the functioning and continuation of our service to the Church, our parish and community. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate Jesus’ resurrection, in our hopes, our prayers and in the exercise of our generosity. Let us continue united in confessing one faith and let us prepare for the next time we see each other at the altar of the Lord. After all this Lenten abstinence, receiving the Eucharist will taste as it was intended to be. It will taste like heaven! Blessings upon all of you during this Easter season and ever! Queridos hermanos y hermanas: Este año la Pascua es diferente y sigue siendo

la misma... Debido a las circunstancias actuales de la crisis de salud, hemos pasado a un exilio físico y espiritual. Durante esta Cuaresma, se nos ha impedido muchos dones de nuestro catolicismo, en particular la celebración y recepción de la Eucaristía. En cierto modo, hemos detenido el tiempo y el espacio en el ayuno de todo lo que es puro, que da vida y es santo. Hemos compartido en el sepulcro de Jesús, tranquilo, quieto, obligados a ver nuestros rostros y el rostro de Cristo. ¡Sin embargo, a pesar de este velo de oscuridad debemos recordar quiénes somos! Somos hijos de la luz y los recipientes de las promesas de la vida eterna. Aunque la celebración pública de la Pascua este año está marcada por pautas de salud, no debemos abstenernos de celebrar la Pascua en nuestros corazones. Esto significa regocijo en el hecho de que ni siquiera la enfermedad ni la muerte en sí tienen la última palabra. Es Jesús, nuestro Jesús resucitado, quien nos guiará cuando contemplemos y celebremos un sepulcro vacío. Por esto gritamos al mundo "El Señor ha resucitado... ¡Aleluya! Este año la reafirmación de nuestra fe, nuestro propio sentido de oración personal y doméstica y su apoyo a nuestra querida comunidad de San Luis Gonzaga es crucial para el funcionamiento y la continuación de nuestro servicio a la Iglesia, a nuestra parroquia y a nuestra comunidad. Easter 2020

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

In this joyful season of Easter, the Church frequently prays Psalm 147. It expresses the new life and hope that we have in the Risen Lord. Here are the opening verses:

Alleluia!

Sing praise to the Lord who is good; sing to our God who is loving:

to God our praise is due.

The Lord builds up Jerusalem and brings back Israel’s exiles, God heals the broken-hearted and binds up all their wounds.

Indeed, God is good. The Resurrection of Jesus leads us out of exile from the land of sin and death to new life. The power and presence of the Risen Lord heals our wounded and fragile lives and binds our hearts with new hope. That is why we sing praise to the Lord who is good.

With this great song of praise, Easter also challenges all of us to re-imagine our lives in light of the Resurrection of Jesus. With his grace, we can break free from the cycles of pain, violence, destructive forces, misunderstandings, and everything else that weighs us and our world down. We can re-envision our lives and live differently.

May God grant you and your loved ones renewal and joy in the Risen Lord Jesus.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

En este tiempo gozoso de Pascua, la Iglesia ora con frecuencia el Salmo 147. Expresa la nueva vida y la esperanza que tenemos en el Señor resucitado. Estos son los versículos de apertura:

Cantad alabanza al Señor, que es bueno; canta a nuestro Dios que es amoroso:

a Dios nuestra alabanza es debida.

El Señor edifica Jerusalén y trae de vuelta a los exiliados de Israel,

Dios sana a los desconsolados y ata todas sus heridas.

De hecho, Dios es bueno. La resurrección de Jesús nos lleva fuera del exilio de la tierra del pecado y de la muerte a una nueva vida. Lenten regulations Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one‘s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

Reglas Cuaresmales Abstinencia: Todos los católicos mayores de 14 años, deben abstenerse de comer carne el Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los viernes de Cuaresma.
