This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. We pay special homage to God’s most striking gift to us, Christ in the Eucharist. On the night before he died he took bread and gave thanks and praise, he took the bread, broke it, gave it to his disciples and said, “Take this all of you and eat it. This is my body which will be given up for you.” In an attempt to go beyond the crucifixion, as an act of love, he left us his body and blood as spiritual food for the journey. Christ became the living bread and the cup of salvation. This was to the dismay of many. This is not the Aristotelian God, indifferent, cold, unreachable and distant. This is neither the unquenchable Aztec God demanding one blood sacrifice after another nor the “mighty” God from the Old Testament so terrible and intimidating. This is our God, close to our humanity and our reality. In the mystery of the Incarnation God became flesh and pitched His tent among us. And from that tent He chose the humblest of forms to remain with His people, the forms of bread and vine. And this we call Eucharist. To this day, this Eucharistic gift has remained among us. People have tried to define or redefine it, to change it, to update it, and even have tried to reject it. To accept that perishable forms of bread and vine can become by the action of the Holy Spirit, through the hands of God’s priests, fallible instruments is both mind bothering and a mystery. We cannot control it and we cannot fully define it. But if we ever doubt of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist just look at the results of it, look at the many lives that have been changed, elevated, and redeemed. Look at the many people who have returned to loving God because of this gift. Look around at the diversity of people, nationalities, ages, ethnicity, economical levels and so forth that become one at the celebration of this Eucharistic meal. As pilgrims on the road we suffer from many hungers but the greatest hunger of them all is our hunger for God. Eucharist means for us to be brothers and sisters in search of the living God as we forgive each other, as we support each other, as we love each other. We are to go out and to share this gift with others, becoming healing presence and helping hands. Only in such we can become bread for others, only in such we can become Eucharist.

Este domingo celebramos la solemnidad del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Le rendimos un homenaje especial al regalo más hermoso de Dios para nosotros, Cristo en la Eucaristía. La noche antes de morir, tomó pan y dio gracias y alabanzas, lo partió, se lo dio a sus discípulos y les dijo: "Tomen esto todos ustedes y cómanlo. Este es mi cuerpo, que será entregado por ustedes.” En un deseo de ir más allá de la crucifixión, como un acto de amor, nos dejó su Cuerpo y su Sangre como alimento espiritual para el camino. Cristo se convirtió en el pan vivo y la copa de la salvación. Esto fue para consternación de muchos. Este no era el Dios aristotélico; indiferente, frío, inalcanzable y distante. Este no era el Dios azteca inextinguible que exige un sacrificio de sangre tras otro, ni el Dios "poderoso" del Antiguo Testamento tan terrible e intimidante. Este es nuestro Dios, cerca de nuestra humanidad y nuestra realidad. En el misterio de la

Encarnación, Dios se hizo carne y plantó Su tienda entre nosotros. Y de esa tienda El eligió la más humilde de las formas para permanecer con su pueblo, las formas de pan y vino. Y esto lo

llamamos Eucaristía. Hasta el día de hoy, este don eucarístico ha permanecido entre nosotros. La gente ha intentado definirlo o redefinirlo, cambiarlo, actualizarlo e incluso haber intentado rechazarlo. Para aceptar que las formas perecederas del pan y la vid pueden llegar a ser por la acción del Espíritu Santo, a través de las manos de los sacerdotes de Dios, los instrumentos falibles resultan ser incomprensible y hasta un misterio. No podemos controlarlo y no podemos definirlo completamente. Pero si alguna vez dudamos de

la presencia real de Cristo en la Eucaristía, solo mire los resultados, mire las muchas vidas que han sido cambiadas, elevadas y redimidas. Mire a las muchas personas que han vuelto

a amar a Dios debido a este regalo. Mire a su alrededor en la diversidad de personas, nacionalidades, edades, etnicidad, niveles económicos y demás que se vuelven uno en la celebración de esta comida eucarística. Como peregrinos en el camino, sufrimos mucha hambre, pero el mayor hambre de todos es nuestro hambre de Dios. La Eucaristía significa para nosotros ser hermanos y hermanas en la búsqueda del Dios vivo a medida que nos perdonamos unos a otros, mientras nos apoyamos unos a otros, como nos amamos unos a otros. Debemos salir y compartir este regalo con otros, convirtiéndonos en una presencia sanadora y ayudando a las manos. Solamente así podemos convertirnos en pan para los demás, solamente así podemos convertirnos en Eucaristía.

Christ’s method of formation was accomplished by diverse yet interrelated tasks. His example is the most fruitful inspiration for effective catechesis today because it is integral to formation in the Christian faith. Catechesis must attend to each of these different dimensions of faith; each becomes a distinct yet complimen-tary task. Faith must be known, celebrated, lived, and expressed in prayer. So catechesis comprises six funda-mental tasks, each of which is related to an aspect of faith in Christ. All efforts in evangelization and catech-esis should incorporate these tasks. (National Directory for Catechesis, paragraph 20)

El método de formación de Cristo fue compuesto por tareas diversas pero interrelacionadas. The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets every Wednesday in the Thiele Center from 10am to noon. This group knits and crochets prayer shawls while praying individually and as a group for the recipient of each shawl. These shawls represent a visible symbol of our prayers

and presence. Shawls have been given to those facing challenging times, illness or to celebrate a special moment to bring the comfort and warmth of God’s love and healing. For more information on how to request a prayer shawl please contact the parish office, 773-278-4808. Este grupo hace mantas de oración hechos de tejido o de ganchillo mientras rezan individualmente y como grupo para que el receptor de cada manta.
