‐ Professionals volunteer with peace of mind‐ Gives the public access to crucial services during major disasters

• Established city/state relationships‐ Builds trust and awareness‐ Allows for efficient communication and activation

• Licensed, trained or credentialed volunteers‐ Facilitates accurate and dependable assessments‐ Maintains readiness

Not every hazard event becomes a disaster

Page 21: THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTSflash.org/ndrc17/MichaelLingerfelt.pdf · environmental science, building ... • Working with AIA National, on‐demand SAP ... • New chapter:

Building Codes

• Requires adoption AND enforcement to be effective

• Only a minimum requirement• Primary goal is life safety• Limited property protection (ie.

may not enhance a building’s ability to return to functionality after a disaster)

Page 22: THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTSflash.org/ndrc17/MichaelLingerfelt.pdf · environmental science, building ... • Working with AIA National, on‐demand SAP ... • New chapter:

• Comprehensive plans, hazard maps and land use and zoning regulations are often not coordinated.

• Building in high risk areas will require the most mitigation – increasing construction and maintenance costs.

• A disaster‐resistant home doesn’t matter if site selection is poor. Need resilient communities AND buildings.
