The Anchor
“…and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.”
One of the side effects of prayer is a kind of exorcism. We cannot come before the presence of the Lord without having a few demons chal-lenged and, if we are willing, driven out. When this happens we realize that we ourselves have been living among the tombs posing a danger to not only ourselves but to others as well. The relief of discovering an-other way of living may be tangible to us but, strangely, it may not al-ways be welcome to others. The converted soul poses its own kind of danger. It causes the world to consider more fully where it really lives and invites it into a new and perhaps frightening kind of life free of its familiar demons. There is, I think, nothing more revolutionary and nothing more radical than that old and worn petition offered sincerely and with eyes open to our own condition than: “…and deliver us from evil.”
See you on Sunday.”
Blessings!

The Orlando Tragedy The Rt. Rev. Wendell Gibbs, Bishop of Michigan issues statement on the shooting.
"How long must I bear pain in my soul, and have sorrow in my heart all day long?" Psalm
13:2
How long, indeed! Senseless violence has once again shattered lives. This
time, 49 dead, 53 wounded, countless traumatized. And, once again, the perpe-
trator is also dead and thus, questions of "why" may never fully be answered.
ENOUGH! How long will we as a nation continue allow innocents to be mur-
dered and not take action? How long will a rhetoric that promotes hate, division
and distrust of diversity capture our national dialogue? How long until the Gos-
pel command to "love one another" finally captures the human heart?
I have not responded before now because it was difficult to speak from a
broken heart. Today I speak out to remind us that God's love is for all people.
God calls all people to love as God loves: unconditionally. In the end it is God's
love that will win. Meanwhile, we must live as witnesses to that love, continual-
ly embracing each other and that peace which passes all understanding.
"For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor
things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any-
thing else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ
Jesus our Lord." Romans 8 :78 -39
Sisters and brothers, the senseless violence must stop. As witnesses to the
Gospel of love, we must do our part to influence public policy, dialogue and ac-
tion to make it so.
May those who have died in this latest tragedy rest in peace and rise in glory.
Amen.
Dear St. Clement’s Family,
We Americans have sustained yet another incident of violence against innocent people, this time in Orlando. How do we wrap our minds around such horror? I’ve been struggling with it since Sunday morning.
The best thing I’ve seen or heard regarding this tragedy came to my in-box today from The Rt. Rev. Wendell Gibbs, Bishop of Michigan. Those good old Psalms speak to any condition in which we find ourselves, don’t they?
We as Christians bear a special responsibility to counter the hatred in the world by consciously dedicating ourselves to living out the gospel message of Jesus: love for all people. We preach it. Let’s practice it.
Peace.
