evaluate the Teaching and Learning processes:

It ensures student-centric environment by means of experimental learning methods,

participatory evolution and supportive welfare schemes.

The IQAC also identifies the need for the change of the traditional mind set of the

teaching staff to equip them to meet the challenges. One example is the workshop on

Student-Centered Methodology conducted by the Department of English to

familiarize both students and teachers with the methods and techniques to increase

student participation and autonomy.

Regular meetings are held with the members of the teaching staff to review the

existing teaching methods and also plan for improvement.

The teachers are encouraged to attend training programmes in teaching

methodology, induction training, etc.

The IQAC initiates programmes that improve teacher abilities like trainings,

Workshops, etc., (for example, a 2-Day Workshop on Computer Applications and

Networking for the teaching and non-teaching staff conducted by Dr. D. Sridhar,

Lecturer in Physics, provides the teachers with the skills necessary to update and

upgrade their teaching methods with the help of technology.)

Care is taken to ensure that the students are given study material in order to assist

them in their preparation for the annual examinations.

Special coaching and remedial classes are arranged for the slow learners.

Class tests, half-yearly exams and pre-final exams are conducted and the assessment

of the results is useful to come up with suggestions for improvement.

The IQAC has constituted a committee to collect and analyse feedback on various

areas. This feedback is collected from the students on the teachers, the curriculum

and services offered by the college, as well as from other stakeholders like parents,

alumni and employers. The analysis is used for quality enhancement in these areas.

The university results are analysed and steps are taken to improve them through

improvements in teaching-learning processes.

3.1 Initiatives of the IQAC in Sensitizing/Promoting Research Climate in the institution.

The IQAC is responsible for constituting the Research Advisory Committee in order

to encourage and motivate the members of the faculty to pursue research-oriented

activities. This year, seven teachers were sanctioned Minor Research Projects by the

U.G.C.

One achievement in this area is that Mr. P. Lakshmi Narasa Dasu, Lecturer in

English, was awarded a scholarship by the International Systemic Functional

Congress to attend and present a paper in the 40th IFSC held in Sun Yat Sen

University, Guang Zhou, China, during 15th to 19th July 2013.

The Faculty Forum was started by the IQAC to provide a platform for the teachers to

share their research activities and teaching practices.

The members of the teaching staff are encouraged to participate in seminars and

conferences, present papers and publish their research articles. There was a

significant increase in the number of publications in international journals, that is ,

nine articles were published by the teachers of the college. Three teachers presented

papers at International Conferences, while many more presented papers at National

Seminars.

The departments are encouraged to organize seminars and workshops. The conduct

of yet another National Seminar by the Department of Economics is another

achievement in this direction.

Extension lectures by experts from various fields are arranged to motivate the

students to take an interest in the basics of research.

The students are encouraged to take up study projects to learn research skills like

gathering information, data collection, report writing, etc.

6.14 Initiatives taken by the institution to make the campus eco-friendly

The Green Audit Committee was constituted this year in order to take up various

measures to make the campus eco-friendly. Some of the most important of them are as follows:

The electricity bills for the past year were collected and analysed in order to initiate

measures to reduce power consumption. Care has been taken to ensure that all electrical

appliances like air conditioners, computers, fans and tube lights are switched off when

not in use.

Water harvesting pits have been dug up in the college ground, by the N.S.S. volunteers

to collect rain water, to avoid wastage of water. Similarly, the water that overflows

from the drinking water tank is directed to the plants and trees nearby. This has resulted

in a significant increase in the ground water level as can be seen from the functioning of

the borewell in the college premises.

The college has taken up a major initiative of beautifying the college campus and a

Landscaping Committee was constituted for the purpose. More than twenty five species

of plants were brought and planted. The green cover of the college has been increased

dramatically as a result, in addition to the beautification of the campus.

Two members of the teaching faculty have contributed their mite to the above-

mentioned initiative. They are Dr. K. Suryanarayana, Lecturer in Commerce, who

donated Rs. 30,000/- towards the Landscaping work and Ms. P.V.Geetha Lakshmi

Introduction

In order to improve the quality of the education and facilities provided by the

college, the IQAC resolved to continue the feedback forms that were used for the previous

year. The feedback from students on two aspects, namely (i) Curriculum and (ii) Teacher

Performance/Quality, was collected department-wise. The departments analysed the feedback

and took action accordingly.

The IQAC instructed the Feedback Analysis Committee to administer the feedback

forms to the various stakeholders like :(i)Alumni and (ii) Parents. This year, another new form

was introduced for Employers. This is in addition to the Student Feedback on Institution.

Accordingly, a total sample of survey of 600 students, 70 alumni, 200 parents and

10 employers was made. The purpose of this survey is to record the information about the

environment, infrastructure, faculty, quality of support material, training and placements of the

students and library from the students, parents and employers. Only 10 employers responded to

the survey for providing feedback of the students in terms of Student’s Quality, Discipline

among the students, Punctuality of the students and Knowledge of the students. The survey

analysis will later be used for further improvement of this college.

ANNEXURE III

Best Practice I

Title:

Mock Parliament

Department: Political Science

Goal: 1. To encourage and involve the youth in politics.

2. To provide awareness about the Constitution among the students.

3. To develop their communication skills

4. To exhibit their talent.

Context: Most of the students are interested about the politics but they are not aware of

the constitution and its implementation. While conducting the mock

Parliament they come to know the practical implementation of the Indian

Constitution and they will also gain knowledge regarding the Constitution

and important articles.

The Practice: One student is selected as Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The whole class is

divided into different groups representing different political parties. One

student is selected as Lok Sabha Leader (Prime Minister) and one student as

opposition leader. One student from each group is elected as floor leader for

each political party and the remaining students are members in their

respective political party. The opposition party members raise questions and

the government gives answers. The students learn the subject and also they

gain information about the Constitution through the interaction with other

students.

Evidence of

Success:

The knowledge among the students regarding the Indian Constitution has

increased markedly. In addition, their active involvement in the mock

Parliament has boosted their courage and they are coming forward to the

teachers to have their doubts clarified.

Problems

Encountered:

Nil.

Resources This practice does not require any additional resources except motivation by

Best Practice II

Title:

Institutional Social Responsibility Cell (ISRC)

Goal: To foster a sense of social responsibility among the staff and students.

To connect all the departments, cells and clubs and integrating social

responsibility across all of them

Context: The new requirements for institutions of Higher Education are social

learning, civic education, leadership skills, community and team

building skills, awareness of social responsibility, etc. It is no longer

enough for an institution to impart knowledge or to help students to

acquire job skills. Instead, the institution has to be committed to

promoting the values of civic engagement and social responsibility.

In the specific context of this college, a need for integrating all the

various campus initiatives was felt. Though different departments and

clubs/cells had their own initiatives focused on social responsibility,

there was no link among them. Their activities were not pervasive.

Therefore, an innovative concept of integrating all these activities was

introduced as the ISRC. It is a campus-wide effort that links all the

activities of the college to bring about a difference to student learning

and development.

The Practice: During the past year, the ISRC has been performing the following

tasks: Creating awareness of social responsibility; Cultivating personal

integrity; Contributing to the community; Developing moral and ethical

reasoning; Striving for excellence. At the very beginning of the

academic year, the ISRC conveys to the students that the college has

high expectations from them. This provides the necessary motivation to

participate in all the activities of the college, whether curricular or co-

curricular. The calendar of these activities is circulated well in advance,

so that the students are informed about them. The ISRC functions

through the community-oriented services of the N.S.S., N.C.C.,

Page 67: The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the IQAC ... · Government Degree College, Khairatabad, Hyderabad. Annual Quality Assurance Report- 2013-14 Page 1 The Annual Quality

Annual Quality Assurance Report- 2013-14 Page 67

Women Empowerment Cell, Eco Club, Red Ribbon Club, Consumer

Club, Literary and Cultural Committee and Anti-Ragging Committee.

Evidence of

Success:

The ISRC has provided the right platform for social learning and

ethical reflection. It has also taught the students how to recognize and

act on their responsibility to the college, in particular, and to the

society, in general.

Problems

Encountered:

The only problem encountered in the implementation of the practice

was at the initial stage when there were reservations about starting a

new cell. The argument was that there was no pressing need to do so,

when all the clubs and cells were already active and functioning well.

The problem was solved when the IQAC showed how by integrating all

these activities, it was possible to systematically connect them and

improve their effectiveness.

Resources

Required:

Since the practice involves community-oriented services, there is no

need for additional resources
