Through this three-year immersive professional development model, teachers learn strategies to engage and motivate all learners and transform their classrooms into active environments for project-based learning. When teachers incorporate Salvadori into their classrooms, their students learn geometry by constructing model bridges, physics by building simple machines, and ratio and proportion by making scale models of NYC bridges. They learn to work collaboratively, write persuasively, debate articulately, and present their ideas effectively. They learn the value of their communities and the importance of civic involvement. The GLOBE program’s primary goal is professional development. Through PD, curriculum development, and mentoring, GLOBE will build the capacity of teachers to incorporate project-based learning, the built world, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) into their professional practice. The Salvadori Center, a leading New York City educational non-profit, invites you to take part in a nationally recognized three-year professional development partnership. All city public schools, K-12, may apply to become a GLOBE school.

GLOBE offers a unique opportunity for teachers, administrators, children, and parents to improve instruction and learning.

All Salvadori projects align with local and national standards and with the scope and sequence of city- and state-mandated curricula.

Program Components: A cohort of 4-6 dedicated teachers from each school annually. Teachers should be from one grade

or one subject area to get the best impact from the program. The group of teachers can rotate each year.

Intensive Three-Day Institute held annually in August Weekly 45 minute to one hour on-site Professional Development and Curriculum Planning Sessions

during a common prep, before or after school. In-class lesson-modeling and co-teaching throughout the school year Opportunity for peer evaluation, observation, and learning Acclaimed Salvadori teaching and reference materials for each teacher in the program Participation in the annual Salvadori Charrette: an all-day design challenge for 15 of your students. Parent Workshop at your school Comprehensive evaluation of the program

A school’s cost for participation in the GLOBE program is $16,000 annually, one third the program’s actual cost. The Salvadori Center subsidizes GLOBE through corporate, foundation, and government support.

GLOBEGuided Learning through Our Built EnvironmentAn Immersive Three-Year Professional Development Program

The Salvadori Center prepares teachers to unlock the math and science embedded in the structures that surround us.  We inspire teachers and their students to use the

wonder, beauty, and logic of our built environment as enduring learning experiences.

Our math scores were outstanding for our students this year. 94% of our students achieved in performance levels 3 and 4 on the NYS math assessment. We feel that the Salvadori experience helped our students learn and practice important math skills while they were engaged in exciting and fun filled hands-on activities.—Edward Bleeker JHS 185 Principal Valerie Sawinski

I observed students testing the strength of various beams that they created with paper. Students thought they were just having fun, but in reality they were calculating, using math vocabulary, collaborating with classmates and developing social skills. – Teacher from M.S. 45 Thomas C. Giordano School

This workshop will help me incorporate architecture across the curriculum. We were able to discuss plans for next year’s program with my fellow teachers and our Salvadori educator. The planning time was great and really productive.  -- 2009 GLOBE Institute participant
