I was luckyenough to have Mark Bradburne andDale Gibson interviewing me, everycategory had different people.Afterwards we had the specialexperience of being taken to theHouses of Parliament for lunch! Wow!

“We returned to our hotel, theJumeriah Carlton - how spoilt were we!The reception was at 6pm for theAwards, and finished around 12, butthe hours in between were amazing! Iwas lucky enough to be joined by mymum and dad from France whichmade it all the more special.

"I thought I was in a very strongcategory Rider /Groom along withRebecca Smith and Christopher Ely. Iwas ecstatic when I was announced thewinner. It still hasn't really sunk in that Iwon such an innovative award. Peoplesay to me that it's much deserved, I saymaybe, but there are many otherpeople that are doing the same as me,I'm a lucky person to have beennominated and such an award is forALL the staff that work hard all dayevery day.

“I love what I do and have had theopportunity to meet and work withsome wonderful people and horses.

'Racing isn't an easy life, it is hard andfrustrating at times, but that pales intoinsignificance when you have theexperience of looking after goodhorses, having great winners andbeing around some of the best peoplein the world - the wonderful world ofracing!”

Mason had broken her back in a point-to-point fall just over a year ago andhad made incredible progress toreturn to race riding aided by herretrained racehorse Liverpool. Masonwent on to ride in Houston, Texas, inFebruary, finishing a close second.

Deniel finished sixth in the opening HHSheikha Fatima Ladies race in Oman, however she had previously won a legof the series in Australia, and rode inthe finals in Abu Dhabi in 2014. Shewas full of enthusiasm for theopportunities the series had offeredher saying. “Wow! What a fantasticseries of International races. It bringsthe best amateur and apprentices fromaround the world to compete on levelterms. It gives you the chance to go toplaces that some of us can only dreamof. Competing in Australia, Oman andAbu Dhabi are some of the besthighlights of my career so far.

“We, as competitors, want for nothingwhilst we are away - wonderful hotels, food and hospitality. Lara Sawaya doesan exceptional job of at organisingeverything. I’ve been very lucky tohave been invited to represent GreatBritain and would love to continue todo so. Our Jockey Co-ordinator, SarahOliver, is so important to the Festivaland works extremely hard.

She continued. “Riding Arabians arevery different from ridingThoroughbreds, they are smaller, sharper in their movement. They aregreat fun and extremely tough with anamazing recovery rate.

“Even though I didn’t win this time, thetrip to Muscat, Oman was great. Theracetrack and surface at Al Rahbaracecourse was very different to what Iam used to at home. I thoroughlyenjoy riding in the series which as wellas giving me the opportunity toexperience racing in other countries, gives me the chance to make newfriends and we can share ourexperiences and knowledge.”

DUBAI INTERNATIONALARABIAN RACES TO KICKOFF 2016 SEASON INAUSTRALIA

South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC)Chief Executive Officer, BrentonWilkinson, announced MorphettvilleRacecourse was chosen by the DubaiInternational Arabian Races (DIAR)committee to host the first two DIARraces of 2016 at the 12th March racemeet to complement Shadwell StudAustralasia’s sponsorship of a full cardof Thoroughbred racing.

“The family friendly event is a platformto promote the sport of Arabian horseracing in South Australia and showcaseMiddle Eastern culture, and it promisesto be an exciting lead-up event toAdelaide’s premier racing event - the2016 UBET Adelaide Cup on 14March.”

The two Arabian races, in associationwith the National Arabian RacehorseAssociation of Australia (NARA); will bestaged as part of a full day ofThoroughbred racing sponsored byShadwell Stud Australasia which iscelebrating 30 years of success inAustralia. The story started when ATTALAQ trained by Colin Hayes atLindsay Park Stud in Angaston, won the1986 Melbourne Cup.

“The event is a great way toacknowledge the long-standingrelationship between Shadwell and theHayes family, both who have playedsuch an important part ofThoroughbred racing in South Australiaover the last 30 years,” Mr Wilkinsonsaid.

The Arabian horse races have beenmade possible through the support ofthe DIAR program whose patron is HisHighness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid AlMaktoum. HH Sheikh Hamdan is amember of the ruling family of Dubai, the United Arab Emirates Minister of

Finance and the Deputy Ruler of Dubai.

He was one of the pioneers in bringingEuropean bred Thoroughbreds to racesuccessfully in the SouthernHemisphere, and is one of the mostprominent and successful owners andbreeders of Arabian racehorses in theworld.

“The Arabian horse racing industry issmall but growing in Australia, withmany drawn to the athleticism of thehorses, as well as the excitement of theracing,” Mr Wilkinson said.

“Arabian horses are generally smallerthan Thoroughbreds, but can carrylarge weights and have gentletemperaments, opening the door for abroader range of people to getinvolved in the sport as jockeys.”

Director of Shadwell Stud Australasia,Mark Kelly, reiterated the significanceof Shadwell's support of the race day inSouth Australia and their connectionwith the DIAR program.

“We are excited that the connectionbetween Shadwell Stud Australasia andSouth Australia can be furtherdeveloped through the sponsorship ofa card of Thoroughbred racing in thelead up to the Adelaide Cup,” Mr Kellysaid.

“We have invested heavily inThoroughbred racing and breeding inSouth Australia for 30 years and this isa great opportunity to commemorateour significant achievements duringthat time. “

T H E A R A B I A N R A C E H O R S E

All the Thoroughbred races on 12 March will benamed after horses that have won Group Oneraces in Australia in the famous nominatedcolours of HH Sheikh Hamdan.

“It fits really nicely that HH Sheikh Hamdan isalso the patron of DIAR and that this eventprovides the opportunity to educate morepeople about the Arabian breed, the sport ofArabian horse racing and the Arabic culturewhich underpins it.”

Mr Wilkinson said an all-South Australianjockey line-up will feature in the Arabian races- the Shadwell Arabian Stallions Plate valuedat $30,000 and the UAE Arabian Plate worth$20,000.

The races will be called by Victoria Shaw,Australia’s only professional female racecaller.

Along with the Thoroughbred racing and twoshowcase Arabian races, other events on theday will include a ‘Cultural Marquee’ whererace-goers will be given the opportunity tolearn about the United Arab Emirates.

“Race-goers can sample Middle Eastern foodand drinks, and experience the art of hennatattoo – all for free,” Mr Wilkinson said. “A

face painter and pony rides will provideentertainment for the younger members in thecrowd.”

In the lead-up to the March race meetAdelaide primary schools will be involved in anexciting community art project ‘The ArabianRainbow Competition’. The competition allowsstudents to paint a life-sized fibre glasssculpture of an Arabian horse. It is hoped theproject will provide school children to learnmore about the Arabic culture while nurturingtheir creative and artistic instincts.

The finished sculptures will be display atMorpettville Racecourse on 12 March and willbe judged by the committee of the DIAR, ledby His Excellency Mirza Al Sayegh. The winningschool will receive a cash prize of $3000,$2000 for second place and $1500 for thirdplace.

2016 DUBAI KAHAYLA CLASSIC

A probable field of 14 runners hasbeen posted for the Dubai KahaylaClassic (Gr1PA), the opening race ofthe Dubai World Cup evening onSaturday March 26.

They include HH Sheikh Hamdan binRashid Al Maktoum's Handassa, whomade an exciting UAE debut whenwinning the third round of the AlMaktoum Challenge last month by 8lengths. Sadly his 2015 winner Manarkwill not run, however His Highness andErwan Charpy will be represented byVersac PY who was second in 2013.The winners of Rounds 1 and 2, Thakifand Haajeb also line up, along with AFTawaq, AF Lafeh and Nashmee, whowere placed in the Challenge races.

Overseas runners include the Qataris,Qassy and Rasi for Jassim Ghazali andTM Thunder Struck for Alban deMieulle and a first Italian contender inLares De Pine. British interest

revolves around Shadwell UK Derbywinner Mahess Du Soleil, bred by Jimand Jo Kippen and owned by theirdaughter Lisa Demoynaz. Now trainedby Arnaud Chaille-Chaille, this is hisseasonal debut.

Charpy spoke of his fondness forVersac saying. "Though I was delightedto win with my other horse [Manark lastyear], I was a bit concerned about myold boy. I am very pleased with hispreparation this year, he finished a verygood second on his comeback in the AlMaktoum Challenge, which wasreassuring and he did a nice piece ofwork here the other morning. He's areal character, I have a lot of respectfor horses who try hard for you, herarely runs a bad race."

A delighted Richie Mullen celebrates his win on Gazwan

The HH Emir’s Sword Festival is thehighlight of the Qatar racing calendarand is held under the patronage of HisHighness the Emir Sheikh Tamin binHamad Al Thani. The Festival hosts 22races for Purebred Arabians andThoroughbreds, some for local bredsonly, and is traditionally held overthree days at the end of February.

There are two Group 1 races forPurebred Arabians including theprestigious HH Emir’s Sword, whichnow forms the final leg of the newly

instigated Doha Triple Crown, whichunites three Group 1 PA contestsacross three countries. With the firstleg going to Sir Bani Yas in the QatarInternational at Goodwood and thesecond to Al Mourtajez inLongchamp’s Qatar Arabian WorldCup, there was no chance of the $1million bonus being won. Thespectacle of the world’s highest everrated Arabian racehorse, Al Mourtajez(OR 130) bidding for back to back winswas an attractive propositionnonetheless.

The feature Arabian race on the firstday of the Festival was the Qatar LocalPurebred Arabian Trophy over 2000mwith a prize fund of $150,000. Majeed(above), a six year old by Amer out of aDjebbel mare, was a winner of the HHEmir’s Trophy over further at thismeeting last year. He had then beenthird to Al Mourtajez in the Doha Cup(Prix Mangante) Gr1 PA in Deauvilleduring a European campaign lastsummer. Fancied beforehand, he wonby a length and was one of four

winners for Umm Qarn, making themthe leading owners of the Festival.

They also took the Purebred Arabianhighlight on the Friday, the $100,000Gulf Cup over 1600m with the Majd AlArab mare, Muhjah (below). She hadrattled up a hat-trick of wins at a lowerlevel last year and had been third tostablemate Majeed in the Dukhan Cupat Christmas.

With the new race plan makingSaturday the focus, the $250,000Qatar International Cup Group 1 PAwas the second race on the card. Wonlast year in impressive fashion byMister Ginoux, this year it was anotherFourcy, Al Shaqab runner thatimpressed when Aba’ath scorchedhome breaking the track record for amile. By Amer, his dam was unraced, though she has an excellent pedigree -out of a full sister to Djebbel andtherefore a granddaughter of Cherifa.

After the race Thomas Fourcy was fullof praise for his colt saying. “He hasbeen impressive. His turn of foot at theend of the race was very interesting. That’s why we decided to race himhere, as he’s a horse that gives his beston firm ground. So this race, with thiskind of racetrack, was a perfect targetfor him.

“The horse was going better and

better in training. My method is thatwhen they are in form, you have torace them. I am unbeaten here! 5starts, 5 wins! I hope I will stayunbeaten today. The horse is toughernow, so following the pace of the raceis easier than in the past for him.Coming from off the pace, then takingthe advantage, gives him heart. Nowhe is strong enough to be at his ease atany pace, so at the finish, he can makethe difference.

“Now he will rest. We will prepare himfor the Qatar Derby in Chantilly. I hopethe weather will be good in June. Hewill now take the same path that MisterGinoux did. This horse has reached anew level, Julien Augé told me that heis better than Mister Ginoux, so we willwait and see. Today he has beaten afew very good horses, I think he is ahorse that can get better and better ashe matures, like a lot of Amer sons.”

The headline race, the HH Emir’sSword brought the Festival to a closeand was every bit as exciting as youwould expect for a million dollarcontest.

Fourcy’s wish to remain unbeaten waschallenged from the outset by one ofthe three Al Shahania runners forJulian Smart, Al Majh’hoor, who keptcloser to Al Mourtajez than he had lastyear. Though it was Al Majh’hoor’sstablemate and 2014 Emir’s Swordwinner, Assy, who had posted anelectrifying six length win in the trial atthe beginning of the month, ultimatelyit was Smart’s young pretender,Gazwan, who stole the show.

By Amer, he is full brother to thestables’ Rathowan, a horse who alwaysseemed a little unlucky, having beenrunner up in a number of Group 1’s.

Gazwan had clearly strengthenedsince his win in Newbury’s Group 1 PADubai International Stakes and his fivelength second to Al Mourtajez atLongchamp in October.

Richie Mullen had timed his ride onthis strong stayer to perfection andmade the most of this tactical race towin by two lengths from Assy, with thecourageous Al Mourtajez less than alength back in third, with theremainder of the field five lengths ormore behind.

Smart was clearly delighted with histeam’s performance saying. “We triedto take the sting out of Al Mourtajez,my horse is rated 117 and he stillcouldn’t go with that horse. AlMourtajez is a very, very good horse,to go that speed and to still be fightingit out at the finish with us shows that.

"I think Assy probably went too fastafter Al Mourtajez and Al Majh’Hoor, but if he had waited and they had gotaway, then we’d be asked “why didn’tyou go?” He hasn’t been beaten far in

second anyway" Smart continued.“That’s the sort of race that Gazwanhas always needed, a very strong paceand he will gallop all day long, he’s avery good horse in his own right."

Smart continued. "He was unlucky inFrance last year, but he was stilljuvenile, he has matured over thewinter and there are lots of goodthings to come from him. It’s just ashame all the good races in Europe area mile and a quarter as I really wouldlike a mile and a half! He’s older now,he’s more mature, as of course is Assy.Hopefully now you’ll see more of Assyin Europe in the summer, it looks likewe’ve got him back to his best as well.I’m very happy to go to war with thosetwo!

“The Triple Crown wouldn’t suitGazwan, which is unfortunate. The milewould suit Assy, but what can you do?You have to take each race as it comesfor the individual. I’m just so happy forRichie. He’s been riding for me for so,so long, and we’ve won Derbies and soon, but this is just great for him.”

Mullen himself was relieved. “It’s beena long time coming you know! Therehave been a few near misses andobviously Djainka Des Forges last yearwas my best chance and the race

didn’t go to plan. Julian has alwaysbeen a big supporter of mine. It’s 16years since I first went to Dubai, he wasthe first trainer to give me rides. As Isaid, it has been a long time comingand I’m relieved more than anything.

“It was a tough race, we knew Assy wasin great form, he looked great at thepost and his performance in the preprace, well, I’ve not seen too manyArabians win like that! I just thoughtback to what Gazwan did inLongchamp and I thought that the racewas probably a year too early for him.He lacked experience and he gotshuffled back early doors, but he reallycame home well that day.

“Julian has always been keen on himand it’s a privilege and an honour towin a race like this. They’re hard to winanyway, but when you get nice rides, and after the near miss last year, and afew times when I haven’t been able toget here and the horse has won... Soit’s been a bit frustrating, but it’s greatto get the monkey off my back now!”

Established in Qatar in 1988, UmmQarn’s 580 acres are located next to anatural oasis in the desert north ofDoha. At the centre of the farm is theGrand Hall which displays the manytrophies that their horses have won, in2011 it also played host to the delegatesfrom theWorld Arabian Horse

Organisation Conference. With fivebarns to house the farm’s collection ofhorses in training and breeding stock, ahorse walker that accommodates 15horses, swimming pool, treadmill, solarium, plus oiled sand and turftraining tracks, the farm is wellequipped to produce racing champions.

FRENCH CONNECTIONAlban de Mieulle is both trainer and manager of HH Sheikh Abdullah binKhalifa Al Thani’s Umm Qarn Farm in Qatar. Training for the farm since1997, he has been responsible for some of their best horses including Nizam,Dahess, Al Dahma, Al Anood, Majd Al Arab, General, Tabarak and Al Tair.He divides his campaign between the Gulf in the winter and Europe in the

summer.

The aim of Sheikh Abdullah is to breedand race Arabians worldwide and he haspurchased many of the top bloodlines toachieve this goal. With the farm’s successfounded on the likes of Amer, Djelmila,Djebbel, Makzan, Sambist and Samsheik, the farms’ aim is to be continuallyimproving its’ stock and to enthuse theyounger generation with His Highness’slove of horses and equestrian competition.

With around 250 horses, includingbreeding stock split between Qatar andFrance, their stallions are based at theHaras du Grand Courgeon in Liond’Angiers. The roster is headed by theprolific champion Amer, now 32, who is inturn responsible for their other stallions –General, Majd Al Arab, Nizam, Divamerand Al Tair, plus Al Tair’s half brother

Tabarak (by Nizam). They also stand twothoroughbred stallions, as well as AlMamunMonlau for Al Shaqab.

DeMieulle trains both Arabians andThoroughbreds for UmmQarn and sinceOctober 2014, Sheikh Abdullah’s principaljockey has been Olivier Peslier. GaetanFaucon joined the team the following yearand more recently, Jean Baptiste Hamel.

DeMieulle has consistently been one ofthe Arabian racing world’s top trainers andthis season in Qatar, he is ranked third inthe Trainers Championship [on prizemoney to 20 March] with 30 winners from160 runners. Despite not winning thefeature event, UmmQarn were the leadingowners of the Emir’s Sword festival withfour winners.

Having disappointed for the second yearrunning in the QatarWorld Cup, Kalinobounced back to form when winning theWorld’s Richest Arabian race, the JewelCrown (GR1 PA) in Abu Dhabi inNovember. A bruised foot has interruptedhis preparation for the Kahayla Classic(Gr1 PA) in Dubai, making hisparticipation doubtful, so theirrepresentative will be TM Thunder Struck.

DeMieulle explains. “TM Thunder Struckwill go to Dubai. 2000 metres is perfect, theEmir’s Sword over 2400 metres was too farfor him yesterday. With the QatarWorldCup being transferred to Chantilly, thetrack would be perfect for Kalino, so wewill try again, but for me, I think he isbetter over a shorter trip.”

Both horses raced in the QatarInternational Trophy (Gr1 PA) atGoodwood last year, speaking of theirefforts de Mieule said. “Goodwood is verynice, but you need to be there with a goodhorse, so at this stage I’m not sure whichhorse will go.

"We tried last year with Thunder Struckbut I don’t think the track suited him [8th].Kalino [6th] didn’t enjoy the undulations, somaybe we will go with a younger horse. Ihave some nice four year olds so we willsee. I have a very nice colt, Tayf (Amer xDjelmila, a brother to Majd Al Arab) who Ithink will be a champion. We have two orthree who may go to the Derby (in France)but we have to beat the horse [Aba’Ath]who won yesterday!”

Jean Baptiste Hamel celebrates Muhjah's (QA) win in the Gulf Cup

Speaking of the racing in Qatar he said.“They try to keep the racing here balanced,50-50 Arabian and thoroughbred. It ismore difficult to breed racing Arabianswith the weather and so on out here, so Ithink there will be more thoroughbredracing and less Arabian racing here in thefuture, as lot of the Qataris are moreinvolved with the Thoroughbreds than theArabians now. It is easier to buy a threeyear old Thoroughbred from the Horses inTraining sales in the UK and the level ofthoroughbred racing here is not so high, aGroup 1 win here, would be more like aGroup 3 or Listed race in France orEngland.”

He continued. “They have done a lot ofwork at the racecourse, though I thinkthere were less people there [at theFestival] this year than last. It has been adifficult season to race, as the programmewas not prepared in advance, so it has beendifficult to plan. I hope next season here

will be better. When the season ends inMay, it will be back to France. Only a fewhorses from here will go, as we have a lot ofhorses, mostly youngstock, in pre-trainingin France. I don’t have many older horsesat the moment.”

Concluding he said. “I like trainingArabians, the standard of competition ishigher now than it was 20 years ago. WithThoroughbreds if you make a mistake intraining, you can usually overcome it, butwith Arabs you must be very, very careful, because if you make mistake, sometimesthey will never comeback. So it is more of achallenge, more for a horseman. When youhave a good one, they are so nice - whenthey understand what they have to do, theygive all they have, they give more thanthoroughbreds. Thoroughbreds, theyfollow the herd, Arabians are different, much more interesting!”

HERITAGE ARABIAN RACING CLUB2016 Annual General Meeting

HARC AGM21 FebruaryFairmont Hotel, Abu Dhabi

The Heritage Arabian Racing Club (HARC)Annual General Meeting opened with thewelcome news that earlier that morning

the Constitution of HARC had beennotarised by Ahmed Adel MohamedAbdelrazak (Chairman, Egypt), DeidreHyde (Secretary, UAE), and fellow SteeringCommittee members, Almir Riberio(Brazil), AnthonyMountney (Australia),and Genny Haynes (UK) at the SwissEmbassy in Abu Dhabi.

The objects of HARC are:- to promote the preservation and racing ofHeritage Arabian horses- to agree a Heritage Arabian horsedefinition- to maintain a register of such horses forthe purposes of racing- to bring sponsorship and support forraces under the HARC banner- to encourage research into racingHeritage Arabian horses

Genny Haynes reported on how thescheme operated in the UK in 2015, helpingmany smaller UK based owners boost theirprize money from running their HARCapproved horses. The aim was to supportand promote these owners who may havedrifted away from the sport havingstruggled to compete with importedbloodlines in recent years. HARC

approved horses received a prize moneybonus in any domestic race if it finished inthe first four places and a smaller bonusjust for running in the higher grade races, even if it finished our of the first four. Acovering was offered for UK breeders forDA Adios, courtesy of Cre Run Farms, amultiple Group 1 winner, World ArabianHorse Organisation Horse of the Year 2008and a proven HARC approved stallion.

In 2015 there were nine individual runnersfrom the 13 registered horses, which ran inover 40 races, with the leading HARChorse beingWhisper, who won twice. Atwelve year old mare by TheWiking shewas also the ARO ChampionMare andsecond in the overall Purebred ArabianChampionship (by races won), anadmirable achievement.

Speaking of her success prior to the AGM,her joint owner Linda Cross said "I amabsolutely delighted that Whisper was thevery first HARC ARO ChampionRacehorse. She is a very special mare andwas fabulously constant this year. TheHARC premium scheme is a real boost toUK Owners and trainers as it rewards thehard work that everyone puts into theseracehorses. On behalf of the Almost AllPartnership I am incredibly grateful to theHeritage Arabian Racing Club for theirsponsorship and support of the traditionalArabian breed."

As the long term aim of this scheme is toencourage breeders of traditionally bredArabians back into the sport, ARO plans torun the scheme in a similar way for the2016 season.

Genny Haynes concluded "ARO is

incredibly grateful to HH Sheikh SultanBin Zayed Al Nahyan and the HARCcommittee for this new initiative andopportunity to boost the 'grass roots' of thesport of Arabian racing."

The HARC initiative had been broadlywelcomed by the 10 countries involved sofar, particularly in areas where all theracing arabians are HARC approved suchas Australia, Egypt and Brazil. All countriesinvolved are looking forward to asuccessful HARC 2016 racing season.

The Stables’ brochure describesW’rsan as‘home to a unique collection of some of themost treasured Polish racing bloodlines intheWorld’.

It began in 2000 when HH Sheikh Sultanbin Zayed Al Nahyan bought USChampion racehorse and multipleChampion sire Monarch AH, in addition tosome of the best of the Magness herd. These horses joined a select band ofRussian broodmares and have become afoundation for his successful stable today.

Proven performance is key and HisHighness believes all his horses shouldundergo some level of training, be it racing, dressage or endurance before they areconsidered worthy to be retired to stud.

The facilities are first class. W’sran boaststhe first air conditioned indoor arena inAbu Dhabi and horses may use the 70mstraight swimming pool all year round.Daily paddock access, mainly grassed, isalso considered vital for the horses’development and wellbeing.

38

W'RSAN STABLESA highlight was the invitation to the stables of His Higness Sheikh Sultan binZayed Al Nahyan to view a selction of his horses, including the remarkable

Monarch AH. StudManager Deidre Hyde gave an illuminating commentary andspoke with The Arabian Racehorse about the Heritage Arabian Racing Club.

Deidre Hyde is the StudManager atW’rsan Stables for HH Sheikh Sultan binZayed. She has been involved in racing formany years, and even briefly as an amateurjockey, when she trained her own horses inthe UK, in the late 1980’s. Hyde has been inthe UAE since 1992 when she came over atthe invitation of the manager of the RoyalStables. She describes her arrival, “ I camefor two years and I’m still here now!”

She continued. “I moved to Sheikh Sultanin 2000 when he was setting up his farm. The current health of Arabian racingdepends on which part of the world youare in. Here it’s almost too healthy, there isthe risk of people getting disenchantedbecause of their horses being balloted outof races - entries of 60 or more horses and asafety factor of only 16. However in the USand Europe, in general, it’s going through atough period.”

Explaining the thinking behind HARC she

said. “I think that HARC can play a role, Iwent into this because His Highness saidwe have to do something, he does believe ahorse should look like an Arabian, not ashow horse though. So we came up withthis idea, which is a bit arbitrary, I’m thefirst to admit. We can never ever take theplace of the top level of racing of course, but I do think we can fill a gap for the smallArabian owners and breeders and preservethe genetic variety of the Arabian, not justthe racehorse, but the show lines whichhave been so spoilt, many of the horseslook deformed and are not bred forfunction.

“I have been astonished at the positivereception that HARC has received ingeneral from around the world. Obviouslyas some of the French lines have beenexcluded, it has not been so popular there, but we are not saying you can’t race yourhorses. It is also not to do with purity,

because of courseWAHO (World ArabianHorse Organisation) is the authority there, there has been enough talk about that andI have always maintained that we don’tactually know what a pure Arabian is. Theexclusions were based on the study ofmarked increase in speed; however with

specialist breeding, improvements arepossible and it doesn’t necessarily meanthat a faster horse is an impure horse. However with such a narrow focus onspeed, other factors can get lost, and wewant to value the identity of the horse asmuch as the speed of it.

Speaking of the future Hyde commented.“I hope that this will encourage peopleback in the sport in countries where it hasdeclined and also bring in new people too. It’s not for the short term, it’s for the longerterm as so many people have left the sport. We hope that we can progress on the startwe made in 2015.

“We now have Leigh Young in place tohelp with our promotion and the websitewww.harchorses.com will be going livevery soon. We are aiming for gradualprogress as there have been enoughfractures in the sport, we see ourselves ascomplimenting and helping the sport.

"If people start with a HARC approvedhorse, get bitten by the bug and want toprogress to the higher levels, there is noreason why they shouldn’t have both kindsof horses in their yard. We are not aboutexclusion, we just want a little space for usto have a chance to compete.

“Because every country has a different typeof programme to suit their ownrequirements and horse population, we arethere to support their individual needs asbest we can. We welcome constructiveideas to move the scheme forward.”

A six year old stallion by Mawood(AE), like the winner of Round 1, Thakif(FR) he is trained by Nacer Samiri. This was a big step up in class anddistance as both his previous wins hadbeen over a mile in lesser company, and had been beaten a distacne behindhis stablemate Thakif, the previousmonth.Settled by Wayne Smith at the rear onthe rail, the early pace was set by RBSmokin Rich (US). Still under pressureat the 500m mark, he finally hit thefront at 300m and drew clearimpressively to win by eight and a half

lengths from AF Tawaq (AE) andNashmee (FR).This was his first start in the UAE andon dirt, whilst he was also a first UAEwinner for his trainer FrenchmanFrancois Rohaut, who also trainsanother highly promising homebred forSheikh Hamdan in Muraaqib (FR).He is from the first crop of Madjani (FR)who won three Kahayla Classics forSheikh Hamdan and now heads to thatcontest at the end of the month.

The 2016 HH The President's Cupwent to Thakif (FR) who held AbuAlabyad(FR) by half a length - arepeat of the placings from 2015,though this year there was noSteward's Enquiry to amend theresult.

It was a good performance by theeight year old from a poor draw, however the strong early pacemeant that jockey Harry Bentleywas able to improve his position asthe leaders tore off in front.

By the time his stablemateShaheer's run had come to an end,Bentley was ideally placed tocapitalise and sent his mount clear,

whilst Abu Alabyad attempted toclose the gap in vain.

A delighted Bentley said " Thishorse is really special to me andthis brings back memories of 12months ago. Any jockey will tellyou we need good horses to getourselves noticed and Thakif hasbeen a big help for me. He is soversatile regarding trip and stayedreally well tonight. I thought2200m stretched him but he wasstill going at the line. We had a baddraw, so it was important to get agood position. Once we did, I wasalways happy. As he has aged hehas got more straighforward andthis was a top performance."

The Collection of the LateSir Peter O'Sullevan CBE

Exhibition at the Osborne Studio Gallery, London

Geoffrey Hughes & Sean Magee

When Peter died at the age of ninety-seven,in July of last year, there ended the life ofan extraordinary man who was, to so manyof us, a legend; universally known as "TheVoice of Racing".

Soon after I set up the Osborne StudioGallery in 1986 I had a visit, quite out of theblue, frommy boyhood hero. Ahead of thegame, as ever, he had heard that ourgallery was to specialise in racing andequestrian art. From day one he offeredenormous encouragement and support andI was, of course, over the moon that a man I

idolised should take such an interest in thisnew enterprise.

Over the subsequent years we developed astrong friendship. In 1998, soon after hisfinal commentary and retirement onHennessy Gold Cup day the previousNovember that I, on a whim, and assistedby plentiful Dutch courage, asked Peterwhether he would consider becoming ourChairman. He did not give me animmediate answer but, to my amazement,he rang the next day to say he would bedelighted to do so.

Over the next eighteen years OSG hadtremendous support from Peter. With hisever discerning eye, he loved coming to theprivate views, and his presence andinfectious sense of humour always ensuredlively interaction- and the possibility of alittle bit of innocent gossip! As the yearswent by, his love of art, becameincreasingly apparent to me and I alwayskept a chilled bottle close at hand for hisfrequent visits! His inquisitive andintelligent nature observed hidden depthsin the paintings that others, includingmyself, often missed.

Racing art was his great love but, beyondthat, he collected works from his travels, particularly from North Africa, seeking outartists in remote places. Interestingly, subjects incorporating Pierrot are wellrepresented in his collection. I did once askhim, after a memorably convivial evening,

why clowns were so close to his heart. Aswas so often the case with Peter, after anevening of bonhomie, when it comes toreporting his answer, my memory fails!Perhaps another may know the answer tothis? His beloved wife, Pat, could well havebeen a possible influence.

All his life Peter was intrigued by artistsand as early as the late 1930s he becamefriends with many prominent painters andsculptors. John Skeaping became a life-long comrade in arms. They shared amuch loved greyhound called Slim, whomthey raced at White City just after theWar,providing many memorable jaunts. SirAlfred Munnings and Edward Seago alsobecame friends and, in recent years, leading international equestrian artistswere willingly cajoled into using theirtalents to benefit his highly successfulannual charitable trust lunch and auction.

These acclaimed artists are too numerousto mention, but Peter was enormouslyrespectful of their creativity. Unusuallyacknowledgement was always made in hiscommentaries to any trophy or work of artpresented; a further legacy of the greatman.

In this retrospective, we have borrowed anumber of bequeathed works for which weare sincerely thankful. Many others are forsale, of which The Peter O'SullevanCharitable Trust will be a beneficiary.Additionally we have borrowedphotographs and ephemera in an attemptto open a window on both his private andpublic life, on and off the turf.

His natural modesty forbade it but everyindication I had from our conversations inthe latter part of his life, suggested hewould love others to share some of thesememories. I also think that he would haveappreciated how appropriate it is that the

period of the exhibition includes the fourdays of the Cheltenham Festival. It is nosecret that this was his favourite time of theyear.

I hope you will take as much pleasure outof this exhibition as we have in putting ittogether. I would particularly like to thankSeanMagee, a close friend of Peter's, forhis in-depth archival work, which hashelped enable this commemoration of anextraordinary life. GH

The Peter O’Sullevan Archive

One evening about five years ago, Peteropened the second bottle of rosé andbroached a matter which had beenexercising him. When the time came, whatwas to be done with all the documentarymaterial which he had accumulated, andwhich was now occupying so many nooksand crannies in Cranmer Court? Would Icare to take custody of it?

53

Page 54: The Arabian Racehorse Issue 12

Of course I would. He had already givenme the fifty-one scrapbooks into which hehad pasted cuttings of everything he hadwritten during his long career as ajournalist, and although the sheer mass ofother material in the flat was daunting, togo through it was the racing historian’sequivalent of Howard Carter openingTutankhamun’s tomb.

A self-acknowledged hoarder, Peter hadkept a huge amount of material whichrecorded his life, from those extraordinarycommentary charts which he had sodiligently annotated with facts and figuresabout the race in prospect, to extensivecorrespondence with a wide circle offriends and fans on a huge variety of racingand non-racing subjects, plus a host ofbetting vouchers (most of them showing aprofit) and all manner of other ephemera. Here was a treasure trove, spilling out of

every cupboard and drawer.

After Peter died I started working throughthe cornucopia he had left behind, andwhat made perusal of this material soriveting was the unexpected.

There is the leaflet which he planned tosmuggle into Germany in July 1939,exhorting workers to resist the Nazis – ascheme foiled when travel restrictionscame into force. There is the script, tweaked with the perfectionist O’Sullevanpen, for his appearance on TheMorecambe andWise Show. There is amusical greeting from Andrew LloydWebber to mark his retirement, and theletter from Albert Roux declaring Peter’sbeloved miniature poodle Topolina ‘awelcome visitor of Le Gavroche and allother Roux enterprises where she isrenowned for her impeccable conduct.’

And there are sheaves of old bettingvouchers, notably one fromWilliamWoodTurf Accountants closing Peter’s account:‘After three years during which you havewon consistently, we shall have to give youbest and ask you to bet elsewhere. You aretoo good for us!’

We have tried to reflect that variety in theitems on display in this exhibition, but themost evocative reminders of ‘The Voice’ athis greatest remain those extraordinarycommentary charts which so graphicallybear witness to his fastidious preparationbefore a big race.

Look at the chart for Nijinsky’s Derby, orGrundy and Bustino’s King George, or oneof Red Rum’s Grand Nationals, and youhear Peter’s commentary in your mind’sear.

Since his death we have unearthed moreand more material in the flat – his chart forSir Ivor’s Derby, a precious relic, wasfound in a kitchen drawer! – and over thenext few months the whole archive will beorganised to form a resource not only forracing historians but for those studying thewider canvas of twentieth-century socialhistory. Some items will be bequeathedand a few will be sold, and the remainingcollection will enjoy a safe haven in TheCox Library of racing books(www.thecoxlibrary.com) – a happyarrangement which will meet Peter’s desirethat his papers should be available inperpetuity.

Future researchers have a real treat instore.SM
