ARO SEASON OFF TO A FLYING STARTSUPPORTED BY DIARChelmsford, April 17

The UK Arabian racing season, administered by the Arabian RacingOrganisation (ARO), got off to a flyingstart at Chelmsford City Racecourse onSunday 17 April in front of well over athousand racegoers, many of whomwere families experiencing Arabianracing for the first time.

The six Purebred Arabian contestswere sponsored by Dubai InternationalArabian Races, whose flagship eventtakes place at Newbury on July 24 thisyear.

It was a day that reflected last yearssuccess as 2015 ARO Champion

Jockey, Simon Walker put his stamp onthe 2016 season riding a treble onCallymay, Jaldi Karo and Yeskan DuCayrou. Last years Champion NoviceJockey, Will Pettis, also got off themark, riding Alhaader to victory in thefirst race. This years Novice title couldwell go to ARO debutant Charlie Price, who caught the eye finishing third onhis first ride, before following up tworaces later with a win on Noble Athlete.

The Best Small Trainer Award winnerlast season, Georgina Ward, recordedan impressive victory with Jaldi Karo inthe conditions event, who will now goto the ARO Cup (Gr.3 PA) at Newbury .

Speaking at the end of the day

Amanda Smith ARO Racing Manager, commented:It was a fantastic way tostart the season, particularly in front ofsuch a large audience.

She continued The racecourse and itsstaff could not have been more helpfuland we are extremely grateful to themfor all their assistance in making thisday so successful. The atmosphere oncourse throughout the day was reallyrelaxed and friendly, and we arelooking forward to returning toChelmsford City on 1 July.

This sentiment was echoed byRacecourse Manager, Fraser Garrity."We were delighted to welcome anARO fixture to Chelmsford CityRacecourse for the first time and reallyenjoyed a cracking day of Arabianracing. With two further fixtures herelater in the year, we hope this is thestart of great relationship with ARO."

The meeting turned out to be a greatsuccess for local trainer Delyth Thomas, winning three of the six purebredArabian races.

She opened her account with Kiraa, who had won here last season, riddenby young jockey Charlie Price, winningthe Wathba Stallions (0-75) HandicapStakes in a desperately close three-wayphoto. Price then partnered theveteran Noble Athlete to his secondvictory in as many meetings, whenwinning the Wathba Stallions (0-65)Handicap Stakes, giving the youngclaimer a double in the process.

Thomass final victory came in WathbaStud Farm Cup (0-45) Handicap Stakeswith Kiraas daughter Kayclaire, riddenby multiple champion amateur, SimonWalker, who has also made a fantasicstart to the season.

Commenting afterwards a thrilledThomas said. Theyre going well atthe moment. Kayclaire has been sobabyish, shes starting to grow up nowand to have her mother win earlier wasfantastic, they were first and secondhere last year in the same race too. Asfor Noble Athlete, he's just a legend,he just keeps getting better with age.

Fittingly it wasthrough riding in the HH SheikhaFatima bint Mubarak Ladies WorldChampionship Series that Mason wasintroduced to Arabians. She cameagonisingly close to winning on her firstride in the series in Houston, when shewas beaten a neck into second placeearlier this year.

Speaking of her experience Masoncommented. Texas was close, so itsnice to get a winner today. The filly

tried her heart out, she wasnt reallyfiring last month at Chelmsford, so Isuggested we try her in cheekpiecesand she did it nicely. Hopefully I willget more rides with ARO this season, Ilove riding and I love winning!

Amanda Smith, Racing Manager for theArabian Racing Organisation, wasdelighted with the way the day hadgone saying. We had a good turnoutfor our opening HH Sheikh MansoorFestival meeting at Hereford and thelovely weather has really helped too.Charlie Price riding a double just showshow important it is to support thegrass roots of the sport, as this willhelp him gain the necessary experienceto help him progress towards his aimof becoming a professional jockey."

At the end of the 2015 season, Gill Duffield,HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid AlMaktoums principal UK Arabian trainerretired. Her then Assistant, PhilipColllington, moved a fewmiles down theroad with some of the His Highness'shorses to Marsh Stables in Exning to starthis career as a trainer. The facilitiesencompass 25 boxes, a covered horsewalker, small indoor ride and threepaddocks, plus access to all of Newmarketsfamous training grounds. He has 18Arabians in training, principally for SheikhHamdan, however owners also include

Athbah Stud and John Elliot and PaulBeard, plus a few thoroughbred pre-trainers as well.

Your yard is essentially full already, how areyou finding it in your first year training?

Im really happy with the numbers, asobviously with it being my first season itgives me the chance to feel my way. Its acomfortable amount of horses. Some ofGills staff have come with me too, which isquite nice because they really love theArabians and they know them so well.

Was it always your ambition to train?

I always thought about training. It wasobviously a little bit uncertain what wouldhappen with His Highnesss horses whenGill decided to retire, so I didnt pin all myhopes on it. It was something that hadalways interested me, with the love of theArabian horse that I got from riding themfor so long. So for the last few seasons I wasAssistant to Gill and I had been taking onmore responsibility within the role, regarding entries and race planning and soon.

You have made a great start by winning theGroup 3 ARO Cup on Saturday, what plansare there for Aghsaan now?

Aghsaan is just amazing, that she couldcome out first time and be able to win arace like that. All credit to Gill with whatshe did with her last year, Ive just beenlucky that she came to me and Ive beenable to bring her along. Shes shown shewas capable of improvement to win that

    race.

She needs to step up to a mile and aquarter now, so she can contest the betterraces. Obviously the Hatta International(Gr1 PA) on Dubai Day would be a possibletarget for her.

    And of the other horses?

Azizi was another one of Gills good horses, hell stick to staying races. There wont bemany races for him , but it would be greatto see him do well again this season.

The No Risk Al Maury three-year-old,Almareekh, is a lovely scopey horse, whether hell be ready to run this year, were not quite sure yet, but hes reallyexciting. Im really looking forward torunning Alrazeen, hes by Madjani out ofQosheeyya, so is a half brother to Salaamaand Rasaasy, who both won the EmiratesEquestrian Federation InternationalStakes, the Group 2 for three-year-olds onDubai Day. I expect him to go to the DIAR

    juvenile prep race at Newbury.

Do you think you will have any internationalrunners this year?

Hopefully we will have some overseasrunners this season, well have to have alook for some of the horses whove alreadygot ratings. If we could find some racesabroad for some of the better ones it wouldbe great. With Duindigt for example, youhave to be lucky with the weatherconditions as the ground can be lightningquick. Ive ridden round there, its a sharptrack and pays to be quite close to the paceas it is difficult to come from behind.

Do you think your experience having riddenArabians, and on most of the courses, will giveyou an advantage starting out as a trainer?

Id like to think so, theres definitely certaintracks which you know wont suit a certainhorse, where it would be less likely tohandle that track or conditions.

Did you come from a racing background?

My father used to work for Dr TomConnors outside MeltonMowbray, he hadhunters and used to bring horses over fromIreland to break in for the Quorn. He alsohad a few pointers and then my fathertrained pointers, but never actually rodehimself. I didnt start riding until I was 14or 15. The family had gone down toDartmoor on holiday and they all wantedto go out pony trekking. I was the only onewho hadnt ridden before - they threwmeon a pony and that was it. When we gothome, Dad bought me horse and it wentfrom there. I was lucky I missed out on allthose bad ponies and went straight on to ahorse!

So where did racing come in?

After I left school I went to agriculturalcollege thinking I would go into aneventing yard, but on my gap year, I wentto Paul Felgates, a small dual purposetrainer, just outside MeltonMowbray. I gotthe bug for racing, having taken horses tothe races and leading a winner up, so thatwas it.

Did you want to be a professional jockey?

No, always amateur, I was too heavy to bean apprentice. My first winner was on theflat was a horse called Acquittal atCatterick in 2001 and in the same race youhad Tom Scudamore, Andrew Tinkler anda few others that are still riding now, butobviously theyve gone jumping. I rodeover hurdles and I had three hurdlewinners, but I never rode over fences or inpoints.

    39

Debut third, Hesamiah Athbah (GB)and Collington at Hereford

  • T H E A R A B I A N R A C E H O R S E

When did you start riding Arabians?

It was around the same time, my firstwinner was for GeorginaWard. I then metthe Bruntons and moved down toWiltshire, so I started to get much moreinvolved. Whilst I was still there, aroundthe middle of 2003, Gill Duffield rang up tooffer me two rides at Lingfield for HHSheikh Hamdan. They both won,Abusamra a maiden and Dambak DuMonteil a conditions.

So then I went out to Dubai with her forthe winter, which was brilliant, an amazingexperience and I was able to learn adifferent way of training. So the firstseason out there I rode Kaolino all throughthe winter and he just progressed so well, ending up winning the Kahyala Classic.

Nad Al Sheeba as it was then, with all theother carnival meetings had an amazingatmosphere, with it all leading up toWorldCup night. When I came back to EnglandRichard Lancaster asked me to be firstjockey to His Highness, so from 2004 I rodefor Gill.

Youve been ARO Champion Jockey five timesand initially said you would be giving up raceriding now youre training, but obviously thathasnt quite happened...

It was hard to consider not riding at all, so Ican still I ride a little bit. The problem inmymind was the logistics of riding andhaving runners, even if we had enoughstaff, it seemed like it would be a little bit ofa conflict of interest to ride as well.

However I still really enjoy it, I ride outevery day and when the opportunity isthere I will still ride in races. I still have mycategory B licence and rode in an amateurrace under rules earlier this year, thatdoesnt pose any problems and obviously itkeeps me in tune with race riding.

The main part of the job doesnt feel anydifferent for me, being on my own, as whenI was still with Gill, but the biggest andhardest bit is once the horses have left thepaddock and gone to post. Its beyond mycontrol then and its so hard to watch themrunning. When Im riding, even when I

    40

    Second lot on the gallops

  • T H E A R A B I A N R A C E H O R S E

rode the little filly at Hereford, HesamiahAthbah, I feel none of that because Im outthere on the track. Im in control andcompletely relaxed, watching the horsesrunning is a harder transition, its muchmore difficult.

How did it feel when Hau Kola won atHereford?

It was great to get that first winner, you justwant it done and out of the way. I was overthe moon for John and Paul because Johnwas one of the first people to give me a rideon an Arab. Having my first winner for himmeant a lot for that reason and then tohave my first group winner with Aghsaanfor Shadwell was equally important. Its an honour to be training horses forSheikh Hamdan and to be training winnersof better class races too, it repays the faiththats been shown in me. Were

comfortable in the yard were in, weve gotenough facilities, access to the Heath andnice horses to look forward to. Its a greatstart.

How did you become involved with Arabianracing?

My parents have always been involvedwith horses. Originally when I was young, they trained point-to-pointers, Mum rodeand was very successful at that. Then theystarted to get involved in Arab racing, Isuppose as she got a bit older, and she rodeand trained Arabians until the French-bred horses came on the scene and thenthey struggled to afford those lines.

I rode in Arabian races when I was 16 andreally enjoyed it actually, its a goodgrounding for kids. Its a bit slower and

theres not much pressure and some ofthem take a bit of riding too.

I progressed to pointing as I loved jumpingand rode under rules as well. I think I rodejust under 250 winners in total and wasnine times East Anglian Point-to-PointChampion. I rode mainly for Joe Turnerwho owned and trained nearly 1500winners, hes passed away now, but thatwas what brought me to East Anglia. Thesponsorship with Baileys horse feedsstarted when I was pointing, they werewith me for three years and I'm luckythey're still backing me now.

  • T H E A R A B I A N R A C E H O R S E

How did the connection with HH SheikhHamdan come about?

I had started riding John Fergusonspointers and then when he got his licence Iworked for him for three years until twoyears ago when I started my own pre-training yard in Exning with three horsesin a 15 box barn. That soon filled up.Originally I had two Arabians to pre-trainfor HH Sheikh Hamdan and I was allowedto give them a couple of runs before theyprogressed to Gill Duffield. I think its goodthat he has two trainers in the UK now, itmakes it more competitive and is good forthe sport here.

How long have you been at Green RidgeStables?Wemoved here in September, there wereforty boxes, but weve added a fewmoresince we moved as theyre queuing to comein the door. We have twelve Arabians forHis Highness, three for Rob Sedgely and

also two for my parents who have decidedto come back into it. One of theirs is aHeritage Arabian Racing Club approvedhorse by Concorde, hes quite nice.

The rest are in pre-training for Newmarkettrainers. We have some for Hugo Palmer, hes a good guy, Ive learnt a lot from him.We have some for Godolphin, throughJohn Ferguson, also James Fanshawe whois an absolute gentleman and some forWilliam Haggas as well. Theyre all reallynice clients, plus we have a few separateones for individual owners like CheveleyPark.

Weve got a horse walker, indoor ride andturnout paddocks, we built a lunge pit andwe have a Zamar machine and some scaleson the way. We live on site and wed makemore room for Arabians if they weregood ones!

Finding good staff can be difficult in racingthese days, how has it been for you?

I think the Arabian racing has helped, as Ican let them ride in races. Ash (AshtonElliot) has worked in racing for five or sixyears and been promised rides whereverhes gone and then not got them. He didwell the other day, finishing second onMunbaher at Hereford. Antonia (Peck)who won on Supa Seeker in the OpenThoroughbred race, shell ride theArabians. In the Open Thoroughbred racesthey can make their mistakes as its onlyme whose is going to get upset, no one else!

Weve twelve full-time and quite a fewpart-timers who come in a few times aweek, plus those that come into ride outlike Max Kendrick andMike Palmer whocome in every Thursday. Max andMike, theyre part of the team too, they know the

horses, they help Ash and the other ladsand the kids arent jealous when they comein, they all get on and theyre learningtogether.

I taught Antonia to ride when she wasyounger, so it was like my own childssuccess when she won at Hereford. Ivebeen friends with her father Graham sinceIve been in Newmarket. He works with menow and gets as stressed about it as I do,hes that older pair of eyes that I need inthe yard when Im away. I trust him andthe kids look up to him.Wed struggle tohave this team without the pre-trainershowever, as they keep the work levelconstant. Ive a lad starting with meshortly, hes leaving a good job to come tome and hell have rides. I think thats whythey come to me because they know Ill letthem race ride if theyre good enough.

The Jockey Club Training Grounds inNewmarket are excellent, but it can still getbusy with the volume of horses, how do youcope?

The facilities here in Newmarket are great. This side of town is very quiet, especially ifyou pick the right times. First lot is busierout here, but then after that its ok. Werelucky as we back on to the gallops, theaccess makes it so easy and we can be outso quickly. When we were at Exning itused to take us all day to do four lots, because of walking there and walking back, which of course is great for them, but as abusiness model for me this is better. Itsdifferent with the Arabians as they go offfor a canter and go out and about, but withthe pre-trainers I can nearly have two lotsdone in an hour and theyre doing enough.

How do you find training the two differentbreeds?I think the Arabians slot in quite well withthe pre-trainers. A lot of my clients dontwant me to do a massive amount withthem, so they do routine exercise together, theyll canter, though obviously they dontwork together.

We broke most of the Arabians here, including some of Sheikh Hamdans whichwent to Phil (Collington). We havent beenactively looking at the sales, I go throughthe overseas form with Rob sometimes andhave been a bit more involved with thatside of things this year. We learnt a lot withthose Russian horses last season, the formis not so strong. I think they have quite ahard life over there and its a long trip forthem to get to the UK too.

You had overseas runners last season andYeskan Du Cayrou was entered in Belgiumtoday, though ran instead in the ARO Cup, aremore trips abroad likely?

Wewould definitely run abroad again, wewent to Belgium last year and they ranreally well, the two that went out there, wewere just a bit unlucky with the jockeys. Ithink the HH Sheikha Fatima series is agreat idea though, the prize money is goodand its a great experience for the jockeystoo.

You're currently joint leader in the AROTrainers Championship, how are you findingyour second season?

I loved Chelmsford, it was great, theyrelovely people there too. There was a greatcrowd, its a good catchment area, therewas always a good crowd when we used to

go pointing. We took our horses for acanter round at the track about two weeksbefore we raced and everyone there wasreally helpful, asking about the Arabianracing. I like Hereford as well, I know its along way away, but its a great course and Ithink it was in great nick too, it might havebeen a bit holey on the outside from wherethe pointers had been, but youre notriding there. I ran two horses there thathad had problems and they came backfine, I wouldnt have run them if I thoughtthere was a risk.

The atmosphere definitely seems better atthe races this year. Weve had two goodmeetings and although obviously wevehad more winners, it does feel muchfriendlier this season. Im competitive andlike to win, but were having fun too andits great to give the kids an opportunity toride, we have a really good young teamhere and were looking forward to the restof the season.

James Gillick is a painter of remarkablevirtuosity, with a devotion tocraftsmanship. Since he was young he hasbeen aiming to achieve permanence andluminosity. To quote his admirer, Directorof the National Gallery, London, GabrieleFinaldi, such infinite care belongs to avenerable tradition.

James is obsessed with the making of hispieces, writes Gerry Farrell of Sladmore, handcrafting all the materials in hisstudio, from oil paints, waxes and glues, tothe varnishes, canvases and stretchers. Hedeliberately uses a limited palette, havingprepared the oils from the purestpigments.

James Gillicks own words express hispassionate commitment to The Horse: Theirmovement is hypnotising because it is sobeautiful, their lack of guile, theirwillingness, their courageousness at times.

This exhibition of his new horse paintings atSladmore Contemporary (with JonathanCooper Gallery, Chelsea) will express thearistocratic aloofness of the thoroughbred, the power of the polo pony, the sheereffervescence of the Arabian.
