the art of salvage: mining the modern with remades
DESCRIPTION
ReMades was an exhibition of work by regional artists, using materials salvaged from The LUX project: the renovation of a defunct office building into a ground-breaking residential living environment in downtown Wichita. In an effort to create an aesthetically-informed product as sustainable and ecologically sensitive as possible, the design and construction team for The LUX (formerly the KG&E building, 120 East 1st St.), invited local design firm, Splice Corp., to propose a series of possible reuses for the vast amount of material that was removed from the building throughout the renovation process. This unconventional approach generated several projects, one of which was an exhibition of artwork created from some of these repurposed materials. ReMades, in a nod to Marcel Duchamp's 'Ready-Mades', featured work by a selected group of artists, each of whom customarily integrates salvaged materials into their own practice, manifest in a variety of different forms.TRANSCRIPT
