Blockbuster putting itself up for auctionBy initiating a sale process at this

time, we intend to accelerate our Chap-ter 11 proceedings and move the com-pany forward, said Blockbuster

chairman and CEO Jim Keyes, in astatement. An auction will allow thecompany to invite competing bids fromboth strategic and financial investors. This will also allow for the consolidationof ownership of the company to thosewith a clear and focused vision forBlockbusters future.

Blockbuster will need approval from thebankruptcy court in the southern districtof New York before it can carry out theauction; the court will have to be satis-fied that the auction represents a

prudent move likely to return the largestpossible value to creditors. The com-pany hopes to be sold to the highestbidder by late April.

Blockbuster has been struggling foryears to maintain a high-cost base ofretail stores in the face of competitionfrom the like of Netflixs DVD-by-mailand online streaming operations. Al-though Blockbuster has launchedstreaming services of its own, the com-pany was forced to close 1,000 retaillocations back in 2009, although thecompany has managed to keep its re-maining retail operations running dur-ing bankruptcy, both in the United

    States and internationally.

Video rental company Blockbuster hasannounced it will be carrying out a spe-cial auction to sell off its U.S. and in-ternational subsidies after a bidder,

Cobalt Video Holdco, offered the com-pany $290 million. Blockbuster plans touse the bid as a stalking horse offer, meaning the $290 million is a minimumbid it will acceptbut if anyone comesalong and offers more money, Block-buster is interested.

The once-mighty Blockbuster declaredbankruptcy back in September 2010,and has been looking for ways to shoreup its bottom line and restructure thecompany has an ongoing enterprise.

Part of that strategy appears to involvegetting some new owners.
