Commodore Madden [email protected] Fun, Friends, Family I want to wish everyone a healthy and happy 2013. Mary and I are looking forward to a terrific 2013, with several personal milestones for us: our first grandson (Niklas Madden Brown – born Jan. 9), reaching age 60 and sharing this wonderful year with all of you. Our focus this year will be on our BCYC members. We have an outstanding membership, a great clubhouse, marina and grounds, and a wonderful group of tireless, dedicated volunteers. And we have a fantastic calendar of fun in front of us comprising activities, events, cruises, sailboat races, fine dining, generous pours and much, much more. As for specific goals and objectives for 2013, the ones I have set are straightforward and easy to remember: FUN, FRIENDSHIP AND FAMILY, our BCYC family. If you are wondering where I got these lofty goals, I only had to reflect on all of you. Thank you for all the FUN we have had together. Mary and I have totally enjoyed our membership at BCYC. Thank you for your FRIENDSHIP – Mary and I value that above all else. And thank you for allowing Mary and me into your BCYC FAMILY. Several major club improvements are planned this year, including a remodel of our downstairs restrooms, replacing doors and windows in the multipurpose and junior rooms, and better banquet chairs. We also plan an evaluation of enhancements to the patio area outside the multipurpose room, and the steps, and related area off the back of the banquet room. A major event for BCYC in 2013 is hosting the US Sailing Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship. This prestigious national event will bring benefits to the club in keeping with our long-term strategic plan, and are vital to our standing among West Coast yacht clubs. Many thanks to Staff Commodore Mary Bacon for chairing this important occasion. I want to acknowledge and thank our committee chairs, board of directors and officers. Without the dedication of these tireless volunteers, we would not have the great club we have. Likewise, I want to thank General Manager, Scott Jones, and our BCYC staff. We are fortunate to have Scott’s outstanding leadership and his wonderful team. As we look out on the horizon of the year in front of us, “Ask not what your club can to do for you,” because it’s not about me or you; that is not why we have come together. It is about fun, friends and family, our BCYC family – that is the wonderful reason we have all come together. Dr. Robert (Bob) Foresman was born in 1925 in Pasadena, raised in San Marino and died at home in San Juan Capistrano on Dec. 30, 2012, due to cancer. He is survived by his wife, Juin, and children: Scott Foresman, Guy Foresman and Gayl Foresman Beller, as well as eight grandchildren. His youngest son, Mark, passed away several years ago, also of cancer. Bob was a recreational sailor from the time he was a pre-teen, progressing from a 10-foot sailboat that he made himself to ocean-going vessels. He served in the Navy’s “V-12” program and as an officer in the Navy’s dental corps. Orthodontics was Bob’s profession for over 30 years. His interest in sailing led him to develop many innovations for his own sailboat. In 1965, Bob established Forespar Products Corporation, where he designed and produced numerous products for the marine industry. He was known for his dry sense of humor, creativity and dependability. Bob’s ingenuity and work ethic benefited BCYC, where he served as commodore in 1994, in numerous ways. Probably the most impactful was his solution to the seawall problem. He came up with an inexpensive, well-engineered system that insured the seawalls would remain in good condition. That was the last hurdle in BCYC’s effort to purchase the marina from the Irvine Company. The system he designed in 1993 is still in place today. Donations in Bob’s memory may be made to the Bahia Sail Racing Association, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, which assures support for the next generation of amateur sailors. Fun, Friends, FamilyI want to wish everyone a healthy and happy 2013. Mary and I are looking forward to a terrific 2013, with several personal milestones for us: our first

grandson (Niklas Madden Brown – born Jan.

Thank you for your

FRIENDSHIP – Mary and I value that above all else.

Bob is greatly missed, but is celebrated in our memory and lives.

Paint, Hammer and Nails

As we welcome in the New Year, members have many reasons to be proud of last year’s improvements to our facilities. The December Masthead detailed these accomplishments, so I won’t repeat them here, but thanks are due 2012 House Committee Chair, Vance DiMaria, and all the others who contributed to the successful projects.

A new year brings new opportunities for enhancements to our club. The committee has presented an aggressive budget for projects, large and small, particularly for the lower restrooms and the junior patio area. We have a busy and exciting year ahead. Please consider coming to a committee meeting – you won’t be handed a project, unless you volunteer. But with many decisions to make, as much member input as possible insures a better result. The committee typically meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., but check the calendar for changes. The February meeting will be on the 20th.

Happy New Year to all and a warm welcome to our new commodore, Tom Madden. As incoming Membership Committee chair, and assistant chair, Cynthia Childs, we feel very fortunate to be a part of such a fun and dynamic club — the “friendliest yacht club on the bay.” We are honored and excited to serve in this role. Thanks to Joe and Jeanne Bekas for their outstanding job over the past three years. Our plan is to continue what they started, building on the momentum of what they and the committee have accomplished.

To do this, we plan to reach out to existing members and new recruits alike, seeking suggestions, ideas, participation and referrals. A vibrant and active membership enhances everyone’s experience. So help us help you, with ideas to get current members more active and to attract new members.

We are currently forming the Membership Committee and welcome all who would like to participate. Meetings take place the third Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. Join us if you can, stop by and say hello at the club or contact us at [email protected] or [email protected].

We look forward to getting to know you!

A Note from our Chaplain...“Eat less, move more. Buy less, make more. Stress less, laugh more.Feel blessed, love more. Find a quiet spot every day. And breathe.”

BCYC’s Activities Committee is looking forward to “lucky 13” and the events planned, including the upcoming Super Bowl party, two lounge nights, Provence on the Patio, the member Art Show, Halloween and New Year’s Eve.

We kicked off the year with a New Year’s Eve party that was spectacular, with great food, music and most of all, friends. Kudos to Chef Georges Rapicault and his staff for preparing such a delicious meal and to the Exclusives, who provided wonderful entertainment. Our next big event is the annual Super Bowl Party Feb. 3, chaired by Nancy Isbell and Michael Bryant. They know how to throw a great party and it is sure to be a great time!

Each of this year’s seven events is being chaired by individual club members who will use the general committee and other club members as resources and helpers. So, if you are asked to help with an event, pitch in! It is a great way to become involved and get to know other club members.

Our committee would like to thank Nancy and Jerry Valuch for their tireless work over the last three years. Though still involved, they are taking a well-deserved (and overdue) rest from the chairmanship duties. Our hats are off to you, Nancy and Jerry.

Let’s Go Fishing

What has become an annual fishing trip to The Lodge at Englefield Bay, located in Haida Gwai on British Columbia’s Queen Charlotte Island, is filling rapidly. With 12 anglers already reserved, we still have four slots available for this adventure, Aug. 3-8. This is a fishing experience of a lifetime.

Last year ended with me catching my first blue marlin of 2012, on Dec. 4. Five of us chartered a boat in one of my favorite fishing grounds, Los Suenos, Costa Rica. Trolling with frozen ballyhoos (popular big game fishing bait) and 50-pound test lines, the first bite was an 85-pound sailfish, an easy catch. The second was a real challenge, a 350-pound blue marlin – it took almost 50 minutes to reel in this beauty and get it on board. After getting pictures, we put that awesome fish back in the water, saying goodbye until we meet again. The second part of the 2013 Los Suenos Billfish tournament runs March 13-16. Let me know if you are interested in participating in this great event.

I hope the New Year brings happiness, health and peace to all. Have a great 2013.

With a new title come different responsibilities. As vice commodore, I look forward to working with our 2013 water-based volunteer committee chairs, including Abbott Ayloush, angling; Director EB Barden, cruise; Staff Commodore Mary Bacon, JWDC; Sarah Pickell, junior board advisor; Rob Pickell, junior sailing; Scott McKinlay, measurer; Mark Silvey, port captain; Staff Commodore Gary Tolar, power fleet; Secretary Sandy Mills, racing member advisor; Paul DeCapua, sail fleet; and Andy and Lori Everson, trophies. Speak to any of these committee chairs about becoming a member of their team.

For those who missed Awards Night, please applaud Paul Secard, named the 2012 recipient of the Jerry Foltz Perpetual Trophy for Outstanding Contribution as Officer of the Deck (OD), for both volunteering and covering no shows at that post on 12 separate days.

All member volunteers work at the same pay grade – however, volunteering as OD is actually on the fun side of painless, with semi-casual attire okay, a ‘big-dog’ name tag for the day, and a free lunch during, and libation at the end of your shift. Please sign up on the calendar outside the front office to serve as OD at least one day during 2013.

To quote Elizabeth Andrew, “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”

The 2013 Cruise Committee welcomes all members to join in the planning – we typically meet at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month. We are looking for members with great ideas, good imaginations and a desire to create fun on the water and land.

With an inspired and enjoyable cruise schedule, members without boats are encouraged to participate as well via vehicle, ferry, or as a stow-away on a friend’s yacht, because all of our cruise venues have nearby land lodging.

March boasts a Newport Harbor raft-up, so we expect a huge turnout. If it’s April, it must be Avalon with lots of activities, lots of relaxation, you pick. May….ahh, STAYCATION! What’s easier than playing and staying on our own docks? July will find us at the Isthmus, and August is Clambake – ‘nuff said. In September we will journey to Seal Beach Yacht Club, an easy trip by land or sea. An adventure to Catalina Island Yacht Club in October provides the best end to the cruising season.

There is a detailed cruise schedule on the BCYC website. Please join us and be part of the stories; don’t just listen to them.

A New Beginning

Commit

As 2013 begins, we all look forward to upcoming events. Aside from exciting final exams and other school-related stuff, I am personally eager for the start of the biggest regatta for junior women sailors around the country – the 2013 Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship, June 22-27 at BCYC.

I have competed in this national regatta for four years. My favorite aspect, other than the sailing, is the opportunity to become a part of a host family for a week. It’s like being on vacation in a way, away and on your own. This year will be no different even though I live five minutes from the club, as the US Sailing rules mandate that I stay with a host family. Given over 20 girls from Southern California raced last year, many local sailors are expected to race this year in their home waters. They all need a host family.

This year is doubly exciting for me, not only as a racer for this event, but as a contributor. The BCYC Junior Board of Directors will also be quite involved in this event, helping with off-water activities and, most importantly, helping with finding host families to help house the racers.

Since there will be 80 girls plus coaches and other officials who need to be housed, your help is much appreciated! If you have any questions for the organizers, please contact Staff Commodore Mary Bacon, event chair, at 949-836-7227, or [email protected]. For housing information, contact S/C Ginney Eaton at 949-793-2777, or [email protected].

This is going to be a fun and memorable event for the racers from around the country, BCYC, all involved members, including the junior board, and most especially, our local community. Be committed, get involved.

First and foremost, I would like to take say thank you to the many warm welcomes I’ve received since becoming your new junior sailing director. Over the last eight years, I’ve had the privilege of being part of a very special club. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to use my knowledge and experience to enhance a program that not only develops young sailors, but also showcases the talents of our amazing racers. At the top of my priority list will be to recruit an elite coaching staff, including a new CFJ and head racing coach. Both positions are

It’s 2013, the year of our host obligations for the U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship (JWDC). This is a national junior sailing event governed by US Sailing and raced in Club 420s (a trapeze boat) by 40 teams of 13-18–year-old female racers. BCYC will be a busy place from June 22-27, and we want our members and community to be aware of this prestigious event. The committee has been hard at work for many months in preparation for this awesome undertaking.

Got house? We need to provide housing for 40 teams of two girls, plus coaches and various officials. We have commitments for half of this number, and solicit your help to complete our housing requirement. Please contact S/C Ginney Eaton to obtain specific information at [email protected].

Got sponsor? We have arranged for some fabulous sponsorship opportunities. If you know someone, who knows someone, be among the first to take advantage of these opportunities. Contact Director EB Barden at [email protected] for more details.

Want to party? The second launch/awareness reception will be held on Sunday, Feb. 17, 4-5:30 p.m. FREE wine, beer and snacks will be provided.

The countdown is on and we want you to be part of BCYC’s special role in this national sailing event.

crucial in order for our program to move to the next level.

In other important news, December was a very good month for two up-and- coming BCYC racing classes. First, Sage High School finished at the very top of the CFJ silver fleet during the Anteater Regatta, Dec. 8-9, at Newport Harbor Yacht Club. Conner Chung and Madison Nadelman both turned in amazing performances to propel their school to the top of the podium. Next, I would like to congratulate Max and Jake Mayol for representing our club some 3,000 miles away. The boys competed in the Optimus (Opti) class during the Orange Bowl International Regatta, Dec. 26-30, hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami. They produced outstanding individual performances against some of the best young sailors in the world. Keep up the great work!

2013 started off with a fantastic New Year’s Eve Party. Great food, excellent entertainment and fabulous company made for a terrific kickoff to the New Year. Kari and Vice Commodore Paul Konapelsky and Mary and Commodore Tom Madden did a great job of decorating the club for the event.

We recently completed the 2013 BCYC budget. As part of the process, the Board of Directors allocated a significant amount of funds for capital improvements in 2013. We are fortunate that a portion of our club revenues can be allocated to major club improvements. Most of the planned projects will be managed under the leadership of House Chair, Director Bob Emmett. I look forward to working with Bob and the committee in overseeing these projects that will enhance the club

infrastructure.

The holiday season provided an opportunity for getting together with club members, reconnecting with friends and relatives and, of course, making resolutions for the New Year. I’d like to suggest three resolutions to consider for adoption in 2013 to further enhance your BCYC experience:

• Wear your name tag – this gives new members and the staff an easier way to get to know us all.

• Get involved – we are very fortunate to have a wide array of land- and water-based activities and committees to choose from; participating provides an opportunity for you to impact selecting events and is a great way to get to know other members.

• Attend club events – your club calendar is packed with a variety of not-to-be-missed events.

And speaking of NOT-TO-BE-missed events - 2013 Showboat dates are March 20-23. The theme is “The Marvelous Boob Tube” featuring your favorite television shows from the 50s and beyond. It is shaping up to be a great show – fabulous entertainment and no commercials! Tickets go on sale Feb. 20 – contact the front office to reserve your seat. Don’t be a stooge like Larry, Moe or Curly and wait too long to make your reservations.

Looking Forward

Every woman who is a member of BCYC is automatically a member of Las Commodoras. Look for our monthly activities in the calendar section of The Masthead and on the BCYC website. Most events are on the third Thursday of the month and typically include a luncheon and program. Men are also welcome to attend!

“Hats Off To You, For All You Do” was the theme of the January recognition luncheon, chaired by Junior Staff Commodore Karen Winnett. Many BCYC members were honored for their time and hard work in helping make BCYC a successful and fun club. Thank you, Karen, for an excellent program.

Saturday, Feb. 16, will be our very popular annual cooking class with Chef Georges Rapicault. The focus will be

appetizers. Sign up early to get a good seat! Many men have attended this event in the past and enjoyed it very much.

The 2013 Las C o m m o d o r a s Board of Directors will work very hard to bring you quality, interesting and fun events this year. If you have not attended in the past, think about doing so this year. With the variety of programs being offered, there will surely be one of interest to you. We hope to see all of you at an event!

Double Dare

Most of my articles start with “many years ago” when I was a young guy in this race or that race, and some of the misadventures I would get into. This article concerns the 2013 BCYC racing calendar and possible new adventures! Lickity Split is still out there racing and I’m wondering where you are. There is nothing more exciting than the thrills and spills of racing, either in the harbor or open ocean, thinking of the stories you could embellish at the trophy party after the race. You don’t need to be an experienced racer to come out and see what you are missing. There is always someone around the club who would be more than happy to show you the ropes, or to be more exact, the lines.

ropes, or to be more exact, the lines.

The Ocean Racing Series began Jan. 19, with a race to Oil Island Esther. Feb. 9-10 is the infamous overnight race to Avalon, where many stories are waiting to be told and songs to be sung. Yep, at the party at El Galleon on Avalon, there are always one or two guys who find the karaoke machine. They sound pretty good too, but of course everybody sounds good after a couple of beverages. The race on March 2 is around Oil Island Chafee. Then things change up a little. The next four races, March 23, April 13, June 8 and July 13 are buoy races with three races each day. If you have never competed in a buoy race you don’t know what you are missing – fast, exciting racing with never a dull moment.

The Year End Regatta Around the Island Race, Oct. 18-20, is three days of racing starting from off the coastline near Huntington Beach, to the Isthmus, to Avalon and then back to Newport Beach, with parties at all the stops. This is the perfect opportunity to get wild and crazy with no worries, because what happens on Catalina stays on Catalina, unless it gets into one of my articles. So if you have a boat, come on out, and if you don’t, sign up to crew. I double dare you!

As Marty McFly did in the movie, let’s travel back in time 30 years to 1983. Southern California sailboat racing

was either hard-core windward/leeward racing or long

distance endurance runs to exotic destinations like Hawaii, Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada.

Over the years, racing here took a detour and the “random leg” course was introduced, with fewer sail changes and crew needed. But the unintended consequence was that fewer people got involved in the sport. Crews often bought their own boat, but fewer crew meant fewer new skippers…fewer new boats joined the fleet.

To help reverse this trend, BCYC’s 2013 Ocean Racing Series adds more windward/leeward racing, while retaining courses with longer runs. Of course, we’ll still visit our local exotic location, Catalina. If you haven’t entered the series, do it today.

In-the-harbor racing will still be a mix of windward/leeward and random leg, but without the barges. Yippee!

Did you know BCYC has 86 members with sailboats? Frequently, I see the 10 members with Harbor 20s out racing and I periodically see another 10 members racing their large boats inside and outside the harbor. That leaves 66 boats that are missing out on a great sport. C’mon folks, we need more BCYC trophy winners.

Not sure how to race? It’s easy: 1. Enter the race online; 2. Start sailing when the horn sounds; 3. Finish sailing in a few hours; 4. Celebrate!

We are kicking off an exciting new year in the Ship’s Store. General Manager, Scott Jones, has already ordered great new items and we are looking to add several more. Some things being considered are custom pieces that would include the name of your boat, specialty Opening Day gear, pet accessories and online ordering. We welcome and encourage your suggestions – email me at [email protected], or reach out to Bryce Arciero, Sally Rapp and Xandra Laskowski, committee members.

By popular demand, Ship’s Store will be continuing the Pet Member of the Month Club. If you want your favorite four-legged friend featured, send me a picture and we will show them off. This month we would like to welcome three-month old Bella Rose.

Please come join our fun committee! We meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m.
