The Banquet Celebrates Ten Years in Current Location at 8th St. and Indiana Avenue It was 2006 when the last meal was served downtown and guests walked through a newly remodeled heavy equipment building that transformed from warehouse garage to gourmet galley. It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since The Banquet moved from its downtown location on Main Avenue to its current home at 900 E. 8th St. In the past decade The Banquet has seen significant changes. The Banquet meal numbers have increased by 40%. The Banquet has expanded from three breakfasts each week to five, and added two meals each week at a second location serving those most in need in the northwest part of Sioux Falls. These expanded services have led to a 45% increase in operating costs between 2007 and projected costs for 2017, in addition to the added costs of meals and milk. Your very generous gifts to our general fund help us maintain this facility and continue to help the hundreds of guests who turn to The Banquet for nourishment each day. The Banquet relies solely on individual and business donations to meet our budget needs; we receive no city, county, state, federal, or United Way funds. Your generosity does not go unnoticed. It is because of your gifts that we are able to serve those most in need in the Sioux Falls community. Check out our new website. The Banquet is now accepting online donations. It’s easy, convenient and making a world of difference to struggling people in your community. Summer Is Great, But The Need Is Greater During most of the year kids are at school from 8am-3pm. That is seven hours that parents don’t have to find childcare or provide lunch because the school is meeting their needs. During the summer months however parents must find a way to provide the extra childcare and the extra food. Many parents will rely on their parents to provide childcare for their children because daycare is just too expensive. Debbie, a grandmother of six takes care of her grandchildren during the summer months and brings them to The Banquet to help supplement their meals. Because of The Banquet Debbie can provide her grandchildren with a hot meal which is something they might not receive otherwise. You can help hungry children by helping to serve a meal. Whether you contribute your time to serve or a donation toward the cost of the meal, your contributions will ensure that all meals served are fully paid for so that The Banquet can continue to provide this ministry to our community. Tours & Talks Do you want to know more about the Banquet? Are you in need of a speaker for your club, class or work event? The Banquet staff is more than happy to fulfill that need for you. We can present a program that educates your audience about volunteerism and the rewards of helping those in need. We can give you a personal perspective of our guests’ daily lives and the positive impact that ordinary, everyday people have on the lives of those living in poverty. If you want to take your show on the road, The Banquet staff gives tours Monday-Friday. We give tours to social clubs, service clubs, school students and office “field trips.” To find out more about scheduling a tour or serving a meal go to our website www.thebanquetsf.org or call us at 605-335-7066.

The Banquet relies solely on individual and business donations to meet our budget needs; we receive no city, county, state, federal, or United Way funds.

Your generosity does not go unnoticed. It is because of your gifts that we are able to serve those most in need in the Sioux Falls community.

Wild Water West Waterpark Supports Project: SOS

Throughout the summer months, you can stay cool while supporting The Banquet’s Project: SOS! On “Terrific Tuesdays” from 4:00 to 8:00 pm anyone who brings in an acceptable school supply gets admission to the park for just $5.00. On “Free Friend Friday” from 4:00 to 8:00 pm season pass holders who bring an acceptable school supply can also bring unlimited friends to join them at the park. It’s a refreshing way to help!

Save the Date!Festival of Men’s Voices Concert Early This Year – Sunday, October 30, 2016 This year we welcome back the Minnehaha Mandskor, Singing Legionnaires, Norse Glee Club, Reformed Church Men’s Chorus, Sioux Emperians, and the Maplewood Men. We are also looking forward to having The El Riad Shrine Chanters rejoin us this year. This is a free-will offering concert that benefit’s The Banquet’s Project: SOS, providing school supplies for students living in poverty.

Serving Isn’t just for Church Groups, Service Clubs and Business GroupsAre you planning a special event this year? A milestone birthday or anniversary; class reunion; work retreat or family reunion? Please consider serving a meal at The Banquet as part of your festivities.

Recently the South Dakota Bar Association served three breakfast meals at The Banquet as part of its agenda for the Bar Association Convention.

Classmates back in town for a reunion have found it very rewarding to serve their hometown community.

Two couples, Val and Arch and Rog and Carol chose to celebrate their wedding anniversaries while serving a meal at The Banquet. Val joked that it was the only way she could get Arch to take her out to dinner. We loved to celebrate with these fun and loving couples while they served The Banquet guests. Can you think of a greater way to celebrate love by not only sharing time with each other but sharing it with those in need?

How you can get involved: Get a group of co-workers, friends or family together and book a meal at www.thebanquetsf.org The Banquet is a place where everyone is welcome. Although 20-40 people are needed to fully staff a meal, no group is too small to serve. Individuals and families are welcome to serve. Groups are expected to contribute toward the funding of a meal; average costs are between $350 and $1,000 depending on which meal is served.

The Banquet opened its doors to people living in poverty 31 years ago. Unfortunately, that need still exists today. More than 20% of The Banquet guests are children under twelve years old. Our guests are mainly comprised of working parents with children who are having difficulty making ends meet. They turn to The Banquet for meals to supplement their household food budget. After paying rent, utilities and car expenses there isn’t much left for the grocery store.

Come celebrate at the Banquet! Grab your friends to come serve and ask them to sponsor a meal instead of giving gifts. We want to celebrate with you so schedule your day to serve today!

Come to Serve, Come to Eat, Come To Offer Hope. Everyone is Welcome!

Advance America Staff Volunteer in the Children’s RoomPeggy Grode and Shannon Driscoll spent a couple of hours volunteering in the children’s room at The Banquet. The pair brought in books, coloring books, sidewalk chalk, puzzles, activity books and playing cards to share with our young guests.

Peggy and Shannon love spending time with the kids. If you’d like to volunteer in the children’s room contact us to schedule a time. Call 605.335.7066 for more information.

Celebrating and Serving

Gardeners, do you have more produce than you know what to do with? Is your garden bursting at the seams? If so, we would love to take it off of your hands. All fresh produce donations that we receive go directly into the hands of Banquet guests. For people who don’t have the opportunity to grow their own food, having access to home grown vegetables can provide another healthy meal to supplement their nutritional needs.

Salty and sugary foods contribute to weight gain and multiple health risks; however this food is generally what is cheapest at the grocery store. When a family is struggling to stretch their grocery dollars, it is difficult to purchase good, nutritious, but more expensive, items like fresh fruits and vegetables. This is the struggle that many of our guests have when they are buying foodfor their families. When you donate your fresh produce you are providing an opportunity for families to keep themselves and their children healthy and happy.

Fresh produce and other donations can be brought in Monday-Friday, preferably between the hours of 9am-4pm. It is important that NONE OF THE PRODUCE IS HOME-PROCESSED. It must all be in its “natural state” due to health codes. The Banquet cannot accept apples, homemade jams, jellies and pickles.

Please consider sharing your garden’s abundance with our guests. Investing in someone else’s health lasts longer than it takes to eat a tomato, it lasts a lifetime.

We Take Fresh Produce!

The Banquet continues to make a difference in countless lives every day because of the generosity of our volunteers. Generosity of time, treasure and talent sustains us year after year. The Banquet strives to make it easy for our contributors to support us by offering online giving through our website and Facebook. We also offer an ACH option. Print, fill out, sign and mail in the form for ACH contributions found on our website. This form authorizes The Banquet to electronically debit your account on a weekly or monthly basis in the amount of your choosing.

In order to ensure that your gifts support The Banquet in the way you desire, be sure to indicate “general,” “food,” “milk,” or “SOS” on any donations you mail in. If you are paying for a meal, please note the date you served as well. Any unmarked donations support the general fund of The Banquet.

As a reminder, gifts to The Banquet are a great way to honor or memorialize a loved one. By including proper contact information with your gift, each honoree or their family will be notified of your thoughtfulness. All gifts are tax deductible.

Thank you for your continued generosity!

Online Giving and ACH Donations - Your Monthly Commitment Sustains The Banquet Mission

By Eric DeHaan, CPAThe Woltman Group

As you consider your 2016 support of local charities we hope you consider The Banquet! Many taxpayers are able to deduct for tax purposes donations to charitable organizations. This makes the net cost of your donation much less than the amount of the check you are writing!

Good news! You can also donate to The Banquet via a direct distribution from your IRA. Last year, the “Protecting Americans From Tax Hikes Act of 2015” made permanent the provision that allows taxpayers who are at least 70 ½ years old to make up to $100,000 in qualified charitable distributions from individual retirement plans without including the distributions in income. It’s important to note the amount that is excluded from income isn’t also deductible as an itemized donation. Rather, you take the deduction right of the top of your income in that your distribution is not taxed. This is more advantageous for a number of reasons; one being it can reduce the amount of your social security that is taxable. This donation also satisfies any IRA required minimum distributions for the year.

You can also utilize donor advised funds through organizations like the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation to support The Banquet. This allows you to donate a large amount in one year, but stagger your donations to a charitable organization over several years. As an advisor to the fund you make recommendations as to where your funds are disbursed (grants). It’s important to note that your recommendations are advisory. Federal tax law does not permit a donor to retain control over assets previously given to charity.

Everyone’s situation is different. We recommend you consult your tax advisor to maximize the impact of your charitable giving dollars.

Eric DeHaan is a Certified Public Accountant at the Woltman Group.

Strike A Pose When your group serves The Banquet be sure to take a photo and share it on social media. We’d love to have you tag The Banquet in your photos on Facebook and Twitter. Every time you share a post, you’re encouraging another opportunity for a volunteer.

The Banquet has enjoyed great help from some awesome volunteer youth groups including these from First Christian Church in Des Moines, Central Baptist Middle School, and Wesley United Methodist Church. They’ve helped us move backpacks from Kmart to The Banquet, clean and prepare the dining room, clean up around the building, sort school supplies, and more! Thank you!

We Appreciate Our Young Volunteers!

Banquet West “Rocks a Good Vibe” Volunteers are serving more families at Banquet West. June saw record numbers of guests. In a perfect world there wouldn’t be a need for Banquet West, but it’s doing exactly what this ministry intended—feed hungry people, in the northwest part of the city, who are in need of supplemental food for their families.

“I bring my boys here because they can get full. I can’t afford to feed them enough in the summer. Here they can get a good meal and they don’t go home hungry.”—Valerie, mom of 3 children.

Volunteers love working at Banquet West and the staff works incredibly well together, creating a positive experience for the volunteers. One volunteer even told Barb, the site coordinator, “This place rocks a good vibe!”

We think so too. Go to www.thebanquetsf.org to sign up your group.

The Banquet Makes Staffing Changes to Accommodate Growing Need Erika Lapour joined our staff as the new Special Events Coordinator on June 6. She grew up in Vermillion and graduated from the University of South Dakota with a degree in Mass Communications. She has a background in journalism and experience in broadcast production, advertising and graphic design, along with non-profit community relations and special events coordination.

About 15 years ago, she took time off from her career to raise her two sons, Cash and Jack, and assist her husband, Keith, with his freelance graphic design and photography business as a copywriter. Also, for the past couple of years Erika was the part-time office manager for a church. She first served at The Banquet twenty years ago and has served several times since. “I feel blessed to be able to serve as a staff member and I’m looking forward to being part of an organization that does so much to care for our community and our kids.”

Dakotah Jordan joined our staff May 23rd as the Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator. She recently graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City, IA with a degree in Social Work. During a four month internship at Denver’s Largest Hunger Relief center, Metro Caring, Dakotah realized that she would mix her passions of serving people and food together and look for jobs at nonprofits involved in hunger relief. When she found the opening at The Banquet it was a perfect fit.

Dakotah has an interest in all things related to food from growing it to eating it and everything in between. “Food is universal, we all eat it and we all love it. Sharing a meal or talking about food can help people see past their differences and really connect with each other, it’s a beautiful thing”. Aside from her love of people and food Dakotah also loves dogs and being active. “If I am not working you can probably find me watching dog videos, working out or finding new recipes to cook.”

Madeline Shields, former Special Events Director, has accepted a newly created position at The Banquet as the Development and Marketing Director. Madeline’s new role is to actively seek out volunteers and donors through education and communication. Before joining The Banquet in 2005 Madeline worked as a journalist in radio and television. “I’m looking forward to expanding The Banquet ministry to serve those most in need in our community. This is a rewarding position that directly impacts the lives of Sioux Falls families. I could not be more blessed.”

Lucas Spielmann has joined The Banquet as Assistant Site Coordinator and Security for Banquet West.

A Sioux Falls native and graduate of Washington High School, Lucas enjoys working at The Banquet because of its mission to serve hungry people. “I like that there are so many nice volunteers that come here. It’s about being a good person and wanting to do something for others. I like all the blessed people who come here. “

When he’s not working, Lucas is learning to play the guitar and has a passion for music. He also enjoys skateboarding and snowboarding in his spare time. His future goals include going back to school.

Tim Saxhaug, a native of Walnut Grove, Minnesota who has lived in Sioux Falls for the last dozen years is now working as evening Security at our main location. ”I like to help people. Just being a part of something is really nice. And it’s a growing ministry that’s very worthwhile to be a part of. “

When Tim isn’t working during the meals he’s volunteering in the kitchen.” I like to cook and I like to learn about what’s going on in the kitchen. I’ve learned a lot and it’s nice to be able to help out wherever I can. “
