Dear All
We are sure you are aware of the sad news one of our families experienced
before half-term. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ezekiel and his family.
Dad has been into school and would like us to extend his thanks to everyone
for being so supportive at this difficult time.
The ‘Wake Keeping’ will be held Monday 6th March at 6pm at KICC, 1
Darnley Road, E9 6HQ. The church service (also at KICC) will be held on
Tuesday 7th March at 11am with the burial taking place at 2pm at Islington
& Camden Cemetery. All are welcome to attend.
A number of parents have also asked about making donations to the family.
For more information please contact the school office.
Headteacher Tours The next batch of potential candidates visited school
yesterday and were shown around our school by the chair and vice-chair of
governors. The deadline for applications is next week.
‘Look-at-Me’ Workshop This takes place for Reception Parents from 9-
10am next Tuesday.
Reading and Homework This week we did a quick check on the numbers
of children reading at home and completing their homework. We are
concerned some children are not keeping up with their homework and
reading. Therefore, we are reminding the children to spend a little more
time completing their homework and reading tasks on a regular basis.
Reading, and sharing books is an excellent way of supporting your child and
helping them become more literate. If you are worried about how to best
support your child at home, please do speak to one of the members of the
staff, who are more than willing to give ideas about this. We will also be
introducing the homework badge, to encourage children more.
Behaviour The children have responded well to the new procedures at
playtimes and before school and very few children have been found in the
corridors. We respectfully ask parents to wait outside at the end of the day
to help the children to leave the building safely and with the minimum of
disruption. We are also reviewing all of our behaviour processes in school
with the staff and with the children. This week our collective worship has
focussed on rules, choices and a ‘personal rule of life’. The children have
come up with some amazingly thoughtful responses including: love God, love
your neighbour and love yourself. Quite right too.
We hope you have a lovely weekend.
Kind regards

Highbury Grove
Year 5 & 6 Parents/Carers We would like to extend an
invitation to all prospective parents to come to Highbury
Grove to meet some of our students, parents and the
Headteacher, Aimee Lyall. We know that choosing the best
school for children is of paramount importance to families, and
we would like to give parents the opportunity to ask any
questions that they may have when considering their options.
You may be aware, Highbury Grove School has had a difficult
time over the last few months. However, Aimee Lyall, our new
Headteacher, has made some rapid improvements. There is so
much to celebrate at our school; we have a well-considered
curriculum, excellent musicianship, a vast array of
extracurricular activities, a comprehensive transition
programme and nurture provision for students who need
additional support. Crucially, staff remain committed to
providing the very best education for students.
I would be very grateful if you could let Year 6 parents know
about this important meeting to be held at:
Highbury Grove, 6th March 2017, 6.15-7.30pm
Evidently this is very good and free. It
would especially appeal to those who are
artistic as well as Harry Potter fans.
Year 6 Grammar tests have been completed this week and the children are showing progress. The
class has shown a keen interest on the subject of air pollution in London and have written letters to
Sadiq Khan using persuasive language and emotive vocabulary. In maths we have been converting frac-
tions, decimals and percentages and using them to solve problems. Thank you for all the parents who
have helped their children with their tests over the half-term.
Year 5 This week we went on a very important and emotive trip to the Ben Kinsella exhibition at
Finsbury Library. There we learned all about Ben, who was sadly murdered in 2008, and how we can
help to stop knife crime in London. We watched a film where Ben's family and friends talked about
him and the impact losing him has had on their lives. We also met an actor playing a prisoner in a cell
who told us all about life in prison and why we really would not want to go there. We also learned
about the effects on the body and lives if someone is stabbed. We learned how to make correct
choices to avoid knife crime. It was very moving for both the children and the adults and we all came
away having signed a pledge to help each other to stay safe. We would all urge you to visit the exhibi-
tion yourselves if you can.
Year 4 This week Year 4 went to see ‘Song of the Sea’ at the Rio Cinema. We have been looking at
and writing film reviews. In Numeracy we have been learning fractions. As you will be aware, Miss
Green has been off work this week as she has had flu. We hope that she will be back on Monday.
Year 3 This week in Year 3 we have read The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. We started by making pre-
dictions about where he came from and why his headlight eyes change colour? Then we wrote amaz-
ing diary entries about the coming of The Iron Man and some of us included onomatopoeia and simi-
les to make our writing really descriptive and interesting. In Maths we learned to multiply and divide
3-digit numbers by 10 and 100. Finally, in RE we read the story of Jesus in the wilderness who had to
resist temptation from the Devil. We then talked about modern day temptations and things that are
hard to resist… like being mean to our siblings.
Year 2 This week we have been exploring the fantastic language that Julia Donaldson uses in her
book 'The Whale and the Snail.' We have been describing the different settings in the book. We have
included expanded noun phrases in our writing. In maths we have been adding different amounts of
coins together using a blank number line. We have also been practising how to find 1/2 and 1/4 of
different amounts of objects.
Year 1 This week in year 1 we have been working on understanding what each digit in a two-digit
number represents, ordering and comparing numbers to 100 and identifying a number between any
given neighbouring pairs of multiples of ten. In Literacy we wrote questions to find out more about
the mysterious egg in the story, planned what we would do if we could spend the day with a dinosaur
and wrote thought bubbles to show what particular characters are thinking. As a part of our topic
we will be looking at mythical sea creatures for the next few weeks which the children are very excit-
ed about!
Reception We had a fantastic start to our travel and transport topic with a trip to the London
Transport Museum on Monday. In literacy, we have been sharing our thoughts about the trip and
preparing to do some writing about our experiences. In maths, we have been practising adding and
taking away and writing the sums to show what we are doing; please challenge your child at home
with some simple sums, adding or taking away 1 or 2 from numbers up to 20. Please remember our
look@me workshop on Tuesday morning, this will be an opportunity to log in and have a look at
your child's learning journey.
