The BI Survey 19 is based on findings from the world‘s largest and most comprehensive survey of business intelligence end users, conducted from March to June 2019. In total, 3,021 people responded to the survey with 2,477 answering a series of detailed questions about their use of a named product. Altogether, 36 products (or groups of products) are analyzed in detail.
The BI Survey 19 examines user feedback on BI product selection and usage across 34 criteria (KPIs) including business benefits, project success, business value, recommendation, customer satisfaction, customer experience, innovation and competitiveness.
This document contains just a selection of the headline findings for Jedox. It does not show all the KPI results and focuses mainly on the positive findings.
For more information on the survey, visit The BI Survey website.
Established in 2002, Jedox has grown into a team of more than 150 employees. The vendor serves 2,500 clients in 140 countries worldwide through its headquarters in Freiburg, Germany, its seven international offices, and a network of 250 part-ners.
The company’s flagship product is Jedox, a flexible BI and CPM product with planning, reporting and analysis capabilities. The solution, which offers both an Excel client and web interface as front ends, was first launched in 2004. The underlying philosophy of Jedox is to extend the familiar Excel environment with specific BI functionality. The Excel add-in is a classic spreadsheet inter-face combining well-known Excel functions with additional Jedox features. The web client has a browser-based spreadsheet interface – a type of Excel on the web – with additional functions. The software can be run on-premises, in the cloud and also in hybrid scenarios (development on-premi-ses and production in the cloud for instance).
The product is aimed at business power users who create individual planning, reporting and
analysis applications. With the company’s own in-memory database, users have the advantage of a flexible multidimensional experience while staying in their familiar spreadsheet environment. However, tasks such as integrating data into Jedox OLAP Server using the vendor’s web-based Jedox Integrator product may require IT sup-port. Trained business users can later take on responsibility for the administration and further development of Jedox applications. These appli-cations can be published to large groups of users through Jedox Web and Jedox Mobile. Centralized top-down and decentralized bottom-up planning scenarios can be implemented with Jedox. Jedox now provides approximately 50 predefined mo-dels created itself or by partners (e.g., for balance sheet, P&L, cost center, sales planning, HR plan-ning and financial consolidation) via its own mar-ketplace, which is integrated in the product.
Jedox offers good ad hoc reporting and OLAP analysis functionality for end users. Reporting generally takes place in Excel using Excel’s own functionality, or in Jedox Web, which offers additi-onal capabilities for dynamic reporting and report distribution. Users can create reports, analyses and dashboards on the web from a spreadsheet interface closely resembling the functionality, look and feel of Excel.

Customers mainly use Jedox for standard/enterprise reporting (88 percent), ad hoc query (84 percent) and budgeting/planning (74 percent). 49 percent of respondents plan to use it for advanced analysis in the future. Jedox targets companies of all sizes across all industries. 56 percent of our sample of Jedox customers come from mid-sized companies (100-2,500 emplo-yees) with a median of 12 users. However, the mean of 65 users indicates there are also some significantly larger implementa-tions. Jedox provides a flexible BI and CPM product with planning, reporting and ana-lysis capabilities geared to business power users with broad functionality for various BI and CPM tasks. Typical tasks carried out with Jedox by business power users inclu-de viewing, navigating and exploring data. Even tasks such as modeling/enriching data are frequently performed by custo-mers in business departments, with little help from IT.

Peer Groups and KPIs The BI Survey 19 features a range of different types of BI tools so we use peer groups to help identify competing products. The groups are es-sential to allow fair and useful comparisons of products that are likely to compete.
The peer groups have been defined by BARC analysts using their experience and judgment, with segmentation based on two key factors:
1. Usage scenario - functional peer groups are mainly data-driven and based on how customers say they use the product.
2. Regional focus - is the vendor a lar-ge international vendor with a truly global presence or does it focus on a particular region? We also take into account the location of BI Survey re-spondents.
Jedox features in the following peer groups:
• Ad hoc reporting-focused products
• OLAP analysis-focused products
• Integrated performance manage-ment products
• EMEA-focused vendors
• Americas-focused vendors
Large global enterprise BI platformsIncludes products equipped with functionality for enterprise deployments that focus on a broad range of BI use cases.Dashboarding-focused productsIncludes products that focus on creating advan-ced and highly sophisticated dashboards.Ad hoc reporting-focused productsIncludes products that focus on self-service repor-ting and ad hoc analysis.OLAP analysis-focused productsIncludes products that focus on analysis in dimen-sional and hierarchical data models.Data discovery-focused productsIncludes products that focus on visual data disco-very and advanced data visualization.Integrated performance management productsIncludes products that provide integrated functio-nality for BI and performance management, espe-cially planning and budgeting.Large international BI vendorsIncludes products from companies with annual re-venues of $200m+ and a truly international reach.EMEA-focused vendorsIncludes products from vendors that have a sig-nificant presence in - and focus on - the EMEA re-gion.Americas-focused vendorsIncludes products from vendors that have a sig-nificant presence in - and focus on - the Americas region.Embedded analytics-focused products Includes reporting and analytics products that can be embedded in other business applications.
The BI Survey 19 provides the reader with well-designed KPI dashboards packed with con-cise information, which can be absorbed at a glance. The KPIs all follow these simple rules:
• Only measures that have a clear good/bad trend are used as the ba-sis for KPIs.
• KPIs may be based on one or more measures from The BI Survey.
• Only products with samples of at least 20 - 30 (depending on the KPI) for each of the questions that feed into the KPI are included.
• For quantitative data, KPIs are con-verted to a scale of 1 to 10 (worst to best).
• A linear min-max transformation is applied, which preserves the order of, and the relative distance bet-ween, products‘ scores.
The terms ‘top-ranked’ and ‘leader’ are used in the following KPI chart titles. ‘Top-ranked’ indi-cates first position. ‘Leader’ usually denotes a position in the top 25-30% of products listed in the chart.

Jedox implementation projects are usually quite short. Most customers are satisfied with the length of their implementations. However, they are typically rather small with a median of just 12 users in this year’s BI Survey. The product is regularly used in departmental or small-scale scenarios with relatively small data volumes and few concurrent users. Nevertheless the level of implementation satisfaction as well as the frequency of projects completed on time and on budget are high. Project goals defined at the outset are often reached. Survey feedback shows that Jedox creates real busi-ness value for customers, and is a CPM product customers can benefit from using. Product satisfaction
Jedox in ©2019 BARC - Business Application Research Center 14
The majority of customers are satisfied with Jedox as a product and consequently the vendor is named a leader for ‘Product satisfaction’ in three of its peer groups. Essentially, Jedox is a flexible BI and CPM platform. The product is aimed at business power users who create individual planning, reporting and analysis applications with the vendor’s own flexible multidimensional in-memory data-base in a familiar, programming-free spreadsheet environment. Users have the advantage of a fle-xible multidimensional experience while staying in their familiar spreadsheet environment in Excel. The product does not focus on any one particular topic (e.g., financials, sales, HR etc.) or industry. However, predefined industry content is available from Jedox itself and partners via the vendor’s own marketplace, which is integrated in Jedox.

Query performance
Jedox in ©2019 BARC - Business Application Research Center 16
Jedox is clearly capable of performing with the data volumes and user numbers its customers typically work with and delivers fast query performance (relative to the typical data volume queried). Complaints about Jedox’s query performance are quite seldom (11 percent of respondents com-pared to the survey average of 17 percent). Indeed performance speed has been one of the product’s main strengths for years now. Its multidimensional database has always run in-memory so has a head start over more traditional ROLAP systems. Furthermore, the vendor’s OLAP accelera-tor technology, using graphics processing units (GPU) instead of CPU memory, is an interesting option for speeding up perfor-mance in large-scale scenarios if required. Jedox is ranked top for ‘Query performance’ in the ‘Integrated performance manage-ment products’ peer group and achieves four additional leading ranks in this KPI.

Many sites currently use Jedox for data preparation in business departments. The vendor’s multidi-mensional modeling concept is suitable for trained business users. Tasks such as modeling/enri-ching data are frequently performed by customers in business departments, with little help from IT. However, tasks such as integrating data into Jedox OLAP Server using the vendor’s web-based Jedox Integrator product may require IT support. Performance satisfaction with Jedox’s multidimensional OLAP technology is high. Jedox is conse-quently named as a leader in the ‘Integrated performance management products’ peer group. The BI Survey results show that Jedox is clearly capable of performing with the data volumes and user numbers its customers typically work with and delivers fast query performance. The ven-dor’s own multidimensional database has always run in-memory so it inevitably delivers good performance. Furthermore, the vendor’s OLAP accelerator technology, using graphics processing units (GPU) instead of CPU memory, is an interesting option for speeding up performance in large-scale scenarios if required.

Standard/enterprise reporting and ad hoc query are the main use cases for Jedox besides plan-ning and budgeting. Reporting generally takes place in Excel using Excel’s own functionality, or in Jedox Web, which offers additional capabilities for dynamic reporting and report distribution. Users can create reports, analyses and dashboards on the web from a spreadsheet interface closely resembling the functionality, look and feel of Excel. The platform allows for exporting re-ports to, for example, PDF and scheduling briefing books (i.e., batch PDF reports) with the Report Manager feature. Jedox is primarily designed for screen-based reporting.
