The Big Game
Little Dinosaur was excited.
Today was the big game between
his baseball team, the Jungle Warriors,
and Bully Dinosaur’s team,
the Thunder Bangers.
When Little Dinosaur got to the dugout,
he looked around and saw a lot of
sad and worried faces.

“What’s wrong?” he asked Monkey.
“Why is everyone looking so worried?”
“Betty Badger and her brother
Billy Badger are sick,” said Monkey.
“And Walter Walrus is on vacation
with his family. We don’t have
enough of a team to play.
We are going to have to forfeit
the game!”
“This is a bummer,” said Harry the Hippo.
“We worked so hard to get
to the playoffs!”

Just then Baby Stegosaurus
and Baby Tiger walked into
the dugout. “Hi,” said Baby Tiger.
“We just came by to wish you good luck.
We know you are going to be great.”
“Well, thanks, but it looks like there
isn’t going to be a game,”
said Little Dinosaur.

The Bird Rescue
“I’m going to catch a whole basket
of fish today,” bragged Little Penguin.
“I bet I can catch more than you!”
said Baby Seal, and he wiggled
his fishing pole.
Little Penguin and Baby Seal put
worms on their hooks and dropped their
lines in the water.

“Let the contest begin,”
said Little Penguin.
Suddenly, Little Penguin put down his
fishing pole. “There’s something strange
on that rock,” said Little Penguin.
He pointed to a rock out in the sea.
Baby Seal squinted his eyes. “I think
it’s a bird,” he said.
“A bird?” asked Little Penguin.
“It doesn’t look like any bird
I’ve ever seen before.”
“Let’s swim out and see what it is,”
said Baby Seal.

Little Penguin and Baby Seal
jumped into the water
and paddled out to the rock.
They climbed up and looked
at the animal lying on the rock.
“Are you a bird?” asked Little Penguin.

Sleeping Beauty
Once there was a king and a queen,
who were very sad because they had
no children. One day while the queen
was sitting by a pond, a frog hopped
out of the water.
The frog said, “Your wish will soon
come true, and you will have
a lovely daughter.”

The frog’s promise came true,
and the king and queen had a beautiful
little girl. They were happy and held
a great celebration. They invited
the fairies that lived in their kingdom.
There were thirteen fairies in all,
but because the king and queen had
only twelve golden plates, one fairy
was not invited.
The twelve fairies came
to the celebration. Each one
brought a magical present
for the princess.

Just as the twelfth fairy was about
to give the princess her present,
the thirteenth fairy stormed in.
She was very angry that she had not
been invited. “On your daughter’s
fifteenth birthday, she will prick
her finger on a spindle and fall
over dead,” the thirteenth fairy told
the king and queen.

The Camping Trip
Little Penguin and Baby Seal
were excited. They were getting ready
for a camping trip.
“This is going to be so much fun,”
Little Penguin told Baby Seal.
“Did you remember to pack
your flashlight?” asked Baby Seal.

“I sure did, and I’ve packed something
yummy to cook over the campfire,”
replied Little Penguin.
“What is it?” asked Baby Seal.
“You’ll have to wait and see,”
said Little Penguin with a grin.
“But I think you’ll like my surprise!”
Little Penguin and Baby Seal
loaded their tent, sleeping bags,
and the rest of their camping gear
onto their sled. Little Penguin carried
their fishing poles, and Baby Seal pulled
the sled behind him.

“How far do you think we should go?”
asked Baby Seal.
“Far enough that my mother
won’t keep checking up on us
all night long,” answered Little Penguin.
“Remember our last camping trip?”
“Yeah,” chuckled Baby Seal.
“She must have checked on us
at least five times!”

The Halloween Caper
“What are you guys going to be
for Halloween?” Galaxy Girl asked
Spaceboy and Space Monster.
“I’m going to be a cowboy,”
said Spaceboy. “Grandpa has
a cool cowboy hat I can wear.”

Space Monster shrugged.
“We can help you think
of something,” said Galaxy Girl.
“I’m going to be a dog. I’m making a hat
with doggy ears and a suit with a
long tail.”
“You could be a cowboy like me,”
said Spaceboy to Space Monster.
“Or, how about a pumpkin?
I could paint you orange!”

“That would be a little messy,”
said Galaxy Girl.
“I have a ghost costume I wore
last year. You’d make a good ghost,
Space Monster.”
Space Monster nodded happily.
He jumped in a puddle and then made
small monster footprints on the sidewalk.

“I can’t wait to get to the zoo,”
said Galaxy Girl.
“Me neither,” said Spaceboy.
Space Monster nodded.

“Play something on your recorder,”
said Galaxy Girl. “That will help make
the trip go faster.”
Space Monster began to play.
It was a strange but sweet tune.
When they finally arrived at the zoo,
the teacher reminded her students to
stay with their group leaders.
Spaceboy’s grandfather was in charge
of Galaxy Girl, Spaceboy,
and Space Monster.
“Come on, let’s go!” said Spaceboy.

and then from there
go to the spacemonkey trail.”

Pete Penguin and the Bullies
One winter day, Little Penguin
was fishing in the sea when a small,
brown penguin with big eyes waddled
up to him.
“Hello,” said the little brown penguin.
“I’m Pete. My mom and I just moved here.”
“Hi, I’m Little Penguin,”
said Little Penguin.

Pete stood and watched Little Penguin
cast out his fishing line for a few minutes.
Then he asked, “Can I fish with you?”
Little Penguin looked at the shiny, silver
fishing pole Pete was carrying. It was
much nicer than the old, wooden
fishing pole he was using.
Little Penguin felt jealous.
He worried that Pete would catch
more fish than he would.
“All right,” he said finally.
“But be careful not to get
your line tangled with mine.”

The two penguins fished for a long time.
Little Penguin caught two fish and Pete
caught only one. Little Penguin
was happy because, even though
his fishing pole was not as nice
as Pete’s, he caught more fish.

The Emperor’s New Clothes
Many years ago, there lived an emperor
who loved new clothes. He spent all of his money
buying beautiful new suits and robes.
The emperor’s only ambition was to be
well dressed. Each day, he would parade
through the city to show off his newest clothes.

One day, two swindlers came
to the emperor’s city. They told the townspeople
that they could weave a cloth with the most
beautiful colors and patterns in the world.
“This is a special cloth that is only fit for
an emperor,” they said. “But be warned! Our fine
cloth is invisible to anyone who is unfit for his
or her office. It is so fine that only clever
and honest people can see it.”
The emperor soon heard about the weavers.
“If I had a suit made of this wonderful cloth, I
could discover which of my advisors are unfit for
their offices,” thought the emperor. “I will know
the clever folks from the not-so-clever folks.
I must have this cloth woven for me.”
