THE BOOK THIEF Inspired by the book of Markus Zusak. The Book Thief is a story told by an unconventional narrator: Death. This narrator presents us here the history of a girl placed in a host family in a town near Munich during the Second World War. We discover the tragic fate of Liesel Meminger endowed with a black and cynical humour. Liesel is a 9-year-old girl and the involuntary heroine of the narrative whom the Death tells us. Sent to a modest host family, she discovers the pleasure of the reading, the family links and the friendship, and becomes at the same time an actress and a spectator of the human solidarity in adversity. Hans Hubermann is the foster father of Liesel. Hans is a discreet and honest man who refuses to encourage the injustice, what will become over time a big defect in the eyes of the partisans of the Nazi Party of Molching, until it takes its membership card of the Party to have the peace for him and his family. Every night, he will use his thin knowledge to teach Liesel to read, and is going to encourage her to discover the power of the words. “The book thief celebrates love of the reading, the family links, the human solidarity. It can move the Death itself.”Johanna Luyssen “It’s a very moving story”Arthur Coll Characterisation
