Dogs!We had a report recently of a dog out of control on the recreation ground. The owner was unable to recall the dog after it had run off to the other side of the rec to ‘investigate’ another smaller dog with its owner. It took a while for the owner to retrieve their dog, whilst the animal continued jumping up, barking and intimidating the other owner and their puppy. We would like to remind owners to ensure that their dogs are under control at all times whilst on the rec and if they are likely to run off they should be on a lead.

There have also been increase in the number of dog fouling incidents on the rec and surrounding areas, and particularly a worrying number in the children’s play area, by the equipment. This is extremely irresponsible, and we strongly remind owners that it is their responsibility to clean up after their dog. And also to remind their children to do this if they are the ones taking the family pet for a walk whilst they play!

[On behalf to the Parish Council]

WEAPlease join us for a taster week to hear about the media and in particular BlockbusterMovies. Promises to be very interesting and entertaining. We meet at the hall 10am onJanuary 17th and who knows we may even have popcorn at the interval.

The Ceilidh: How about trying something a bit different?

If you read the Great Bradley Bugle from cover to cover (of course you do!) You willhave noticed an item on the calendar for the end of January. We thought we would trysomething a bit different and that enlivened those darkest winter days of January.

This time of year coincides with ‘Burns Night’, a celebration of the life of ‘the Baird’,Robert Burns, author of many Scots poems, on or near the anniversary of his birth –25th January. You may know that this traditionally involves the consumption of copiousamounts of haggis and not a little drinking. However, we have decided that this maynot appeal to everyone.

Therefore, we are going to have a Ceilidh instead, to give a nod to the Baird’s birthday and warm up a chillyJanuary evening. This is a traditional dance, party, or social gathering, very common in Scotland, and somethingthat we hope will make for a fun evening. There will be Gaelic folk music to accompany our Scottish CountryDancing, which are similar to many English traditional dances that you may already be familiar with. Couplesdances are performed in a ring with either fixed couples or a progression, with ladies moving to the next partnerin the ring at the end of each repetition of the steps. Sound complicated?

Not really. Absolutely no dance experience is necessary and you can be as sedate or as energetic as you like.We have our in-house Scottish dancing expert Ella Hollins on hand to tell us all what to do and it really doesn’tmatter if you go the wrong way or get out of step – that’s all part of the fun. We will be inviting everyone to bringsome food along with them - finger foods please - and then we will all join together part way through the eveningand have a delicious feast. There will be a cash bar of course, including soft drinks. This is a family-friendlyevent, though perhaps not suited to very small children and toddlers.

So go on! Book your place now and get ready to move those feet a little.

We hope to see you there.

Exhibition - Great Bradley Archive Group - 24th/25th February 2017There will to be an exhibition at the Village Hall of our work so far on this archive, from 6-9pm on Friday 24th

February, with a cash bar, and snacks. The exhibition will also be open the following morning, Saturday 25 th,from 9.30 to 12.30am, offering bacon rolls and coffee. This will have something for all the family, whether it’sbrowsing through the hundreds of fascinating papers and pictures, (some of which we would like your help inidentifying please), finding out about the long history of your village, helping your children with a fun activity, learning about the most unusual cause of a traffic jam, or simply popping in for a pint or a bacon roll!! Entry tothe exhibition is free.

The Great Bradley archive group consists of 5 people who meet weekly in the autumn and winter months to sortvarious papers, maps and photographs relating to the people, groups, church, village hall and other propertiesand events that have formed Great Bradley over the years.

We are painstakingly collating them into various categories, to enable fellow villagers and members of the publicto trace ancestors or browse through the papers and pictures out of interest. We cross referencedocuments/photos to an individual where there is a significant input to create a separate record of individuals, and are working to put these in alphabetical and year order. A schedule of the various categories is available. We are always interested to obtain more historical papers and photographs and past copies of theBugle, so if you think you might have anything of interest please let us know. We appreciate that somepapers are very precious and need to be kept within the family but a copy would be invaluable in providing apicture of how the village has developed over the years and we can arrange to copy precious items if necessary.

We are working with the support of Charles Ryder, who has kindly provided an office for us to work in and tostore all our archive papers, pictures and sound recordings in our own lockable cabinets (kindly supplied by theParish Council), together with a great amount of his own personal family files that relate to the history of GreatBradley Hall and developments in farming and the village. Mike Brophy is also advising us on the next stage -to make all these different archives available to everyone on the internet.

Working on the archive has proven very worthwhile and we hope this flavour of your village’s past, togetherwith the developing internet record, will create awareness and interest. There will be further information in thenext Bugle edition.

Anyone interested in forming a Local History Society should speak to one of us on the day or get in touch.

Maureen Barnett, Gill Rodwell, Pat Spires, John Barnett and Peter Smith.

Whilst archiving one of the team came across this entry from a PC meeting in 1984. A perennial problem itseems...

DOGS - Howling, Prowling and growling variety — to which could be added —“fouling”.

Mr. Clark introduced a brief discussion on this subject following an unpleasant encounter with one of the prowling/growling species whilst attending a village function recently. Mrs. Beavis had a similar experience and other Council members added comments of like nature. Reference also made to fouling of Clarendale Green to the discomfort and annoyance of residents — and children. Clerk to include suitable comment in Council Notes in Parish Magazine.

Suffolk Philharmonic To Give Remembrance Day ConcertA Tribute To The Fallen – A Celebration Of FreedomSuffolk Philharmonic Orchestra will be playing a special programme of much-loved classics at Ipswich CornExchange on Remembrance Sunday. The concert, entitled “A Tribute to the Fallen – A Celebration ofFreedom” has been organised with the help of the Royal British Legion and will be attended by the Mayor ofIpswich and leading figures from the County.

Leslie Olive, conductor of the Suffolk Philharmonic, said “The concert pays tribute to the fallen and looks tocelebrate our continued freedom which their sacrifice achieved.”

Music includes two short pieces often associated with acts of remembrance – Barber’s “Adagio for Strings”,voted “the saddest piece of classical music” by BBC Radio 4 listeners, and the concert opens with “Fanfare ForThe Common Man” by Aaron Copland.

Violinist Benjamin Baker makes a welcome return to play with the Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra the everpopular Violin Concerto by Max Bruch. Ben’s performance is guaranteed to ‘wow’ the audience, as it did lastyear when he played with the Suffolk Philharmonic at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds.

After the interval, the Suffolk Philharmonic will play the famous “New World” Symphony by Dvorak, a piece fullof excitement and hope for a bright future – and familiar to many listeners nationwide for a famous Hovistelevision advert.

There will be a retiring collection in aid of the Royal British Legion.

Companies and individuals who are interested in supporting the concert, for example by sponsoring players orby paying the ticket price for (ex) military service personnel, can contact Mrs Wietske Hendriksen, Head ofProjects of the Suffolk Philharmonic, for further information on [email protected].
